7:01 pm
the largest conventionial bomb in its arsenal is large enough. fresh concerns. it lacks the strength to destroy underground nuclear bunkers in places like iran. in moments, the pentagon's mission to make one of the most powerful weapons on earth even more destructive. also, no one nos exactly when or where they will touch down. but there is no doubt tornadoes like this one take lives and livelihoods in seconds. tonight fox reports how states are preparing for the worst. and bull lets fly at a convenience store but police say this is no robbery. who the gunmen were really after. fox news is america's election
7:02 pm
head quarters. we begin in florida and the polls now closed for early voting. while we are waiting for the exact numbers of people who stepped up to vote ahead of the primary we know thousands have cast ballots at this point and florida also a state where people requested at least a half million absentee ballots. all of this activity among voters and the florida primary is still three days away. early and absentee voting could be important parts what have happens in the state for the four men running to take on president obama. tonight, just two of them campaigning in florida. former house speaker newt gingrich and former massachusetts governor mitt romney. romney talking to supporters at a rally earlier about how we could get our country back in business. >> if i'm president of the united states i will cut federal spending. i will cap spending as a percent of the economy and i will finally, finally balance themen budget. >> harris: his rival attending a rally in port is th st. luci.
7:03 pm
>> i think the only way to defeat barack obama is to run a solid conservative who can make the case for our values, our beliefs, our programs. >> harris: chief political correspondent campaign carl cameron live in florida. looks like newt gingrich is attacking romney's experience and qualifications and even his character today. >> reporter: all the artillery muster.ossibly must ever on mr. gingrich speaking to the orange county republican dinner, the lincoln day dinner. he hasn't been getting the kind of response in the polls that he got in south carolina. and for that reason, gingrich is running behind. he has only three days to catch up. not a lot of time over the weekend to do so and he is throwing everything he can possibly can at romney. here is one of the various different attacks he uncorked
7:04 pm
today. >> you need somebody who actually knows how to run a team campaign on a large-scale and knows how to get things done in washington and we tried an amateur for the last three years. and the truth is while he may be good at business, governor romney has never had one day of experience trying to get something done in washington on a big scale. >> reporter: it is an interesting contrast. now, you have newt gingrich who has been casting himself as an outsider ready to go back to washington and reform it running in essence on his experience in washington and running against it with his years of sort of going against the grain, his time as speaker often angering republicans because of his occasional deviation from gop conservative orthodoxy. he is saying he wants to go into washington and disrupt it and mitt romney simply doesn't have the experience to do so. >> harris: i have been reading and watching your reporting today and it would seem that
7:05 pm
the mitt romney response from all of this is getting very, very heated in this state. >> gingrich has accused romney of lying in the ads and lying on the debate stage. misrepresenting the facts and rewriting history. today, romney responded to it time and again eceptionly with his own version of history particularly where it comes to newt gingrich being the only speaker in the house ever reprimanded for ethics violations. listen. >> well, he was fined for ethics violations. he ultimately had to resign in disgrace. he can't rewrite history. we have to go back and look at history and he may be a great guy with a lot of the great ideas but he is not the leader we need at a critical time. >> reporter: at one point, romney was talking about what he would do as president and caught himself and said look, i'm talking about what i will do if i'm the nominee. i'm not yet and then said about trying to get out the vote.
7:06 pm
that is what the last 72 hours will be about. who rented the most vans and made the organizational moves to get people to the voting on tuesday. the early balloting is over. the absentee ballots continue to come in. romney does have a cushion because he had been working those votes aggressively. that could give him an edge. the poll suggests romney heads into tuesday between five and ten points ahead in the polls. >> harris: campaign carl, thank you very much. there are two other gop candidates but they have finished campaigning for florida's winner take all primary now focusing elsewhere. texas congressman ron paul is in maine on a quest to pick up delegates there. caucuses there begin on saturday of next week. we talked with voters today or he did rather about cutting the size of government. >> government is supposed to be open. but we have the wrong way now. the government is secret and our privacy is gone. we need to turn that back. we need our privacy back and we need a lot more open
7:07 pm
government. >> harris: and from ron paul to former pennsylvania senator rick santorum also moving on, he is attending a fundraiser in northern virginia tonight. don't forget, fox will have special coverage of the florida primary tuesday night. bret baier, megyn kelly and our entire team getting started at 6:00 p.m. eastern and we will bring you all of the results throughout the evening. don't miss it. moving on now to the middle east. new information coming to us about the plan to put a massive floating u.s. navy base there. officials confirming to fox news they plan to convert an old navy transport ship into some sort of a mothership for elite seal teams. thit will head to the persian gulf. a staging point for special forces which will support antimininging operations in the area. this comes after iran threatened to shut down a vital oil shipping route which connects the gulf to the arabian sea. it handles roughly one sixth of
7:08 pm
the world's oil. iran held war games near the strait earlier this month to show off its military might. and now the regime saying more drills to expect in february. the u.s. navy's plan for a floating base in the region also highlights the pentagon shift in priorities. president obama has said the military will become leaner and more agile. fox news correspondent doug mcelway live with the news in washington. is this in direct response to any new provokation by iran? >> reporter: it does not appear to be so. seems to be another indication that thes is taking seriously iran's threat to block kade the straight of hormuz. the pentagon told fox news while the work is being done in an ex-pa dishouse fashion it is not accurate to a sur vice that isals a rush. highly unusual a ship slated for demixing now suddenly put
7:09 pm
on a fast track for a retrofit. it was an amphibious assault ship that will be converted into a float forward staging base. a kind of mother ship from which maul spa trol small patrd operate without long refueling distances. it would be situated in the strait to act as deterrent to a potential iranian block kade and respond quickly if such a belligerent action were to be taken. >> harris: like a small city. something else that might draw iran's attention is the latest step now to make bunker bombs more powerful. >> the pentagon according to a report in the "wall street journal" has secretly asked congress for funding to upgrade its most powerful bunker busting bomb. the 30,000-pound massive ordinance penetrator. tests have cast doubt on whether the bomb as presently
7:10 pm
constructed is, indeed, powerful enough to penetrate iran's most hardened bunkers where nuclear weapons development is believed to be undertaken. whether the two acts combined are simple defensive prudence, an act of provirginia techation relations message from theblic pentagon you can bet iran is paying close attention, indeed. >> as is the rest of the world. new details tonight about the u.s. raid in pakistan that took out osama bin laden. an elite team of navy seals as you know killed the terror leader in may of last year and now the secretary of defense is revealing who provided some key information about where bin laden was hiding. in an interview with cbs "60 minutes" secretary panetta says a doctor inside pack tan ran a vaccination. that doctor collected a dna sample from bin laden to be told it is really him.
7:11 pm
the same doctor is now in custody facing charges of tree son. the secretary says he is very concerned. as for what top officials in pakistan knew, panetta says there is no proof they were aware bin laden was hiding in their country but they must have had some sense that a person of interest was in that compound. in washington now, our nation's leaders talking about the gridlock on capitol hill. president obama discussing the blueprint he laid out for america in his weekly address today saying he took his plan to the people he met on his recent three day trip and they are optimistic but worried. >> what i saw was people who work hard and believe in each other. they believe in the america that is within our reach but they are not sure that the right thing will get done in washington this year or next year or the year after that. >> harris: mr. obama calling for government reforms to ease gridlock and bar members of congress from profiting from their position. the republican response given by florida senator marco rubio today.
7:12 pm
he says president obama's leadership is to blame for a lack of action in d.c. >> you feel the failure of his leadership every single day of your life. the bottom line is he inherited a country with problems. he asked for stimulus and obama care to fix it. the democrats in congress gave it to him. not only didn't it work, it made everything worse. >> harris: rubio saying free enterprise is the way to close the gap between the rich and the poor. the son of a u.s. cabinet member held against his will in egypt and sam lahood, son of transportation secretary ray lahood is not the only american not allowed to leave that country tonight. fresh concerns that their plight could get a whole lot worse. and turning out for our heros whose service has ended in iraq. our country's first big welcome home parade for the servicemen and women who put their lives on the line for us. this is not the only place
