heart of america, the 90, 95% of americans right now who are struggling. >> jon: mitt romney on cnn the day after winning the florida republican primary, the media focused on the very first part of his phrase there, jim, where he said i'm not concerned about the the very poor. everybody jumped on that and said, a-ha, here is a multi-million dollar nair out of touch. >> they have to weigh the safety net a trillion dollars in the federal budget. ignore that. whenever the media are confronted by the quotes, they can apply the dan quayle rule or the barack obama rule. the barack obama rule you ignore 57 states, you ignore clinging to their guns in religion or the dan quayle rule, you focus and pound away forever on murphy brown or spelling of potato. and something tells me, and i'm trying to think the kwarable. maybe because quail and mitt romney are republicans and romney gets the quail rule and not obama. >> jon: what about the
2:33 pm
fairness they used. >> i think it's unfair the conservatives immediately beat up on him. for saying he intended to repair the safety net. i thought the statement was, forgive me fair and balanced and managed to allow conservative pundits and the liberals. it was kind of an astonishing display. >> some pundits thought it was out of touch. were they wrote? >> no, they weren't out of touch. what he should have said, look, the war on poverty has been going on 40-some years and just as many poor people as when we started maybe we ought to try something else. there's a template here. the media believes that big government is good and can fix everything, and giving people who are poor checks, and if they can portray republicans as something on the opposite. they're going to do it. >> and the media, it's the immediate kra this, the media that and a poor little victim of the media. >> we'll talk about what he said. if we back up the tape a few
2:34 pm
notches, he said i believe in americans or i care about americans, i don't care about the poor. and that out of context as if they're not americans. this is part of an ongoing issue he's got saying i like firing people and this kind of cavalier attitude and next door trump endorsing him one of the most notorious billionaires in the room and pete weiner, a well-known conservative who says, this is ridiculous that he even said this, because, what conservatives ought to be saying is, we want to lift all boats, riding tide lifts all boats and conservative theories will continue the poor not continue the net for the poor. >> jon: we're going to take that phrase, conservatives, what did he just say? >> conservative theories will help the poor and we're going to take that-- we're going to go to romney. >> i know that, noi that alan hates to say that he's part of the liberal media conservative. >> oh, i am the liberal media. >> here we go, okay, in case
2:35 pm
anybody wouldn't want to take alan's word for it, he proved it with the fire people line. romney was talking about firing your health insurance company. >> you know he's had a tin ear to this. >> this is how the game is played. take a text, pretext, take it out of context and use it in politics. >> remember when the commercial when romney took obama out of context and romney bragged about the fact that he was lying about obama. >> jon: speaking of which we can expect to see that line from mitt romney in a democratic campaign ad, assuming mitt romney gets the nomination, don't you suppose? >> i think it's pretty safe to assume he's going to get the nomination, though politics is unpredictable. yes, of course. what struck me about this race this week, how extraordinarily negative it was. and that's driving mitt romney's popularity down. >> it wasn't negative to president obama. it was negative to candidate-- >> he's not running, jim.
2:36 pm
>> yes, it probably will be romney versus obama and oddly enough, romney is the one getting clobbered to the point that rolen martin and soledat o'brien, happy the way that they nailed romney. >> romney nailed himself by saying it. >> talk about media treatment of the republican candidates. take a look at the cover of news room shows mitt, romney and newt gingrich have gladiators in the arena, who will reveil, interested. i guess, i will prevail is the topic. but the media seemed to enjoy watching these two republicans go the at each other. >> it's a good thing the country and world don't have any problems other than this race which was kind of a foregone conclusion and now nevada and go through this et whole piem r time. it's ridiculous. >> along comes donald trump and makes the secretary spectacle bigger. >> i like what rich gail and his mullings blog said,
2:37 pm
compared it to a grand opera. nobody cares who donald trump is endorse. were you alan. >> donald trump is a lot more popular among television producers and bookers than the ordinary american people and fox had a poll that showed his endorsement was a net negative for those who get it. >> so mitt romney has to overcome that. >> the glat yaert spectacle, bring it on. >> his aides were out there, saying he's going to endorse-- it didn't look good. >> he was playing the immediate. >>yeah, he played it well. they fell for it and all of the attention is on him which is what he loves. >> endorses barber for sure. >> we give him what he wants and-- >> match his hair. >> nicely done.
