baier is live in washington with complete coverage of the caucuses and bret, you're bringing viewers a chance to see what's at stake and who their fellow americans in nevada see as the best person to take on president obama. take it away. >> yeah, thank you, harris. welcome to washington, the latest on the nevada caucuses and the next step as you mentioned in the presidential nominating process and many of today's 125 caucus meetings in nevada's 17 counties, that concluded and you're looking at one vote there. we'll you bring you raw vote totals shortly after 10 p.m. when the caucuses conclude. people are still voting and meeting in caucus sites around the state or getting ready to go into caucus site. so we're choosing not to show you vote totals real time, that were tweeted from caucus sites, no matter how reliable those numbers are from people inside those sites. you could potentially influence people's votes at caucus sites that haven't started yet, let alone the

occasional caucus site that might have a tv on inside as people are making their choices. the nevada g.o.p. was hoping that people would wait and we will, but we have been conducting entrance polls all day. and asking nevadaens on their way into the caucuses how do they intend to vote and why. now, voters could change their minds once inside. you see, these are caucuses and an important caveat. they could be persuaded by a speech, by a neighbor or a surrogate based on what happens inside each one of those sites and you have to consider that when you take a look at the polls. keep that in mind. nearly half of nevada caucus voters today said they're very conservative and half of them are going for mitt romney. one in four for newt gingrich and 15% for ron paul and rick santorum 10% of the vote. but look at this, ron paul and newt gingrich do well among the nevada republicans who say
7:04 pm
being a you true conservative is the most important quality and romney comes in dead last in that group. more in four of ten nevada voters say they strongly support the tea party movement, an area a strong suit for newt gingrich and 31%, but second to romney and ron paul and rick santorum at 11% and more entrance polls later in the evening as we go through all of the numbers and also get vote totals as we mentioned after 10 p.m. eastern. let's get the latest from las vegas, the senior national correspondent john roberts is there for us tonight. good evening, good evening to you, bret. we were at a few of the caucuses and looking how the precincts were voting. and mitt romney had a head of steam going into nevada. will he get a majority of the vote above 50% as he did in 2008? the other question, who is going to come second in the nevada caucuses?
7:05 pm
i talked with speaker newt gingrich yesterday and he said he hopes he will come second. >> well, our goal is to try to come in second to romney and recognize, this is a very big mormon population and he did win last time by a majority so we're working here to come in second, and they're all proportional and you get delegates everywhere and we want delegates here and colorado and maine and minnesota. >> now, here is one thing that we're noticing tonight, bret. g.o.p. officials here in the the state had hoped that the enthusiasm for this election was going to bring more people out to the caucuses than they saw in 2008. all indications at least in the two largest counties, clark and turn out is lower than expected. and here is how that could affect the race, mormons turn out about 70 to 75%. so, they could be going out more for mitt romney than they were even in 2008. which could put romney's numbers up and secondly ron paul was hoping for a small caucus turnout because he has a very good ground operation that can get people out to the
7:06 pm
precincts and out to the locations and vote for him. so that could help propel ron paul into second place, and that would actually defy the poll numbers that he had going in here, he was polling in single digits. so we'll see how that turns out. bret. >> reporter: thank you, let's introduce our panel of fox allstars. steve hayes, amy stoddard, associated editor of the hill. and bill kristol and charles kro krauthammer. you look at the poll numbers, going in mitt romney would have a big night. there will be a race for second it appears. >> yes, sound like a race for second. in terms of delegation, it could be proportional, a difference between one or two delegates between second and third place, i think in that way, in the delegates don't matter so much as the percentage and the ability of the candidate as newt begin griff to be able to say, i came in second and for newt gingrich that matters if he
7:07 pm
comes in third after ron paul, as we've said, had people on the ground there for quite a while and has been organizing and does better in caucus states that would be a blow to gingrich. >> i think that pour turnout is bad news for gingrich. i think it's true that mormon turnout is traditionally high and will help romney and gingrich is after a historic upset in south carolina, and a real whooping, 14 point defeat in florida ten days later, he's really blown his window of opportunity. barely campaigned in nevada, nevada, excuse me. and he's not been up on the air there, canceled event and stood up the governor interest, he's made just a wreck of the last week campaigning in nevada. it's a mistake, he's counting on a southern sweep on march 6th, super tuesday and the following tuesday, march 13th, it's a long time between now
7:08 pm
and then, for late breakers who went tonight for mitt romney are going tore mitt romney, to change their minds. he needs money, he needs momentum. he can't finish behind ron paul and he's got to start operating with real campaigns in these states or he's going to lose. >> bill, newt gingrich announced he's going to hold a news conference 11 p.m. eastern and we'll cover it here live on fox. what about the momentum argument that ab makes and the 30,000 foot view? >> well, yeah, mitt romney, if he wins tonight. very good for him. will have won three of five and most of the contests so far and if he can run up more victories in february he'll go with the march, and if he can exceed 51% i think he got in the nevada caucuses in 2008, i think that would be a sign of some strength. and i think turnout being down isn't just a problem for gingrich though, it makes you worry, make one worry if one were a republican about the general mood out there. florida turnout was down, i think, 14% from where it had been in 2008 and now it could turn out again, down here
7:09 pm
again in nevada and that would be worrisome that the race is not energizing the republicans voters. >> nevada is a swing state in the general election, there's no doubt about that. >> and romney has been ahead in the polls and there was another internal number, which is the mormon turnout was about one quarter, which was about what it was in 2008 and as you say, it went nine out of ten for romney and that gives him a huge built in advantage. in terms of number of coming in second, and gingrich had nothing happening on the ground here, absolutely nothing and he barely showed up. he canceled events, he was supposed to have a meeting with the governor, that didn't work out and yet, it looks as if it's going to be a race between him and paul for second. paul a natural constituency here has some organization on the ground and i think it would be kind of interesting result, if gingrich ended up ahead of paul in this, despite having essentially nothing on the ground. >> and santorum, steve, he's
7:10 pm
already in colorado moving on to minnesota, if he has a really low showing here in nevada, does the argument for electability take a hit as he moves on, even though he didn't really spend a lot of time on it. >> i think what you'll hear from santorum, is that they deliberately avoided nevada and it's concluded to mitt romney and knew he was going to do well here. even with the occasion they didn't think they'd be likely to pick up many delegates and they decided to focus on places like minnesota and organizing chuck laudner, one of the keys in iowa went in minnesota to santorum and helping organization there. and they've been focusing there. santorum if he doesn't do well in the low single digits, he can say look, i didn't focus on this, it's not a fatal blow to me. >> no way that newt gingrich drops out tonight. >> if you look at what he's done the past couple of days,'s done fund raising on the side and isn't going to

demographics are who turned out according to the caucus entrance polls going in, it's much like it was four years ago. the key thing that we talked about, at the beginning, was among the very conservatives, even those who strongly support the tea party, mitt romney is getting close to 40%. this is a figure much like he had in new hampshire. so, it's a strong night all across the board for mitt romney going in. the question is, about ron paul and newt gingrich and how this plays out throughout the night. we should point out, harris, we're going to hear from all four candidates in our two hour special tonight starting at 10 p.m. eastern and it's going to be interesting. >> harris: i'm going to point it out in a few seconds, bret. and as you heard bret say. beginning there, the best political coverage januaanywher it's simple, really. >> right now the u.s. government expressing disgust
