♪ (applaus (applause) >> thank you. thank you very much. and welcome to huckabee from the fox news studios in new york city. you know, if i say anything nice about barack obama on this show, some of you get angry and you send me some very nasty e-mails. and because you think we ought to never say a kind word about the man. i better warn you now, you might not like what i'm about to say because i want to publicly thank president obama. he's singlehandedly done more to energize, and unite the republican candidate than any of the presidential candidates combined. because his decision a little over a week ago to force catholics hospitals and universities to provide couldn't sen tiff and abortion pills in direct conflict with the position of their faith. went over about as well as michael moore at an n.r.a.

(laughter) >> even loyal democrats and bona fide liberals were running from that just to get away from him before he self-combusted from the heat that he got and i'm not just talking from the catholics. while this issue was a direct threat to religious liberty within the catholic church, here is an issue that's much bigger. it threatens the very essence of liberty by allowing governments to dictates matters of discretion. even if there wasn't a direct and unholy constitutional assault on the direction of catholics and other christians, it's simply not the government's right to demand that i, as an employer, provide something i don't want to give or my employees don't want to have. now, if the president can demand that i provide contraceptives or even abortion today, then next, he might demand unlimited mental health coverage or some other form of health coverage. he insisted that employees be covered for dental work, even

cosmetic surgery, maybe a face lift for this old mug, might need some improvement, but i'm not sure that it's a necessary function of the president to demand it. and the president's lame and laughable attempt to make things better by playing the shell game of moving from the cost of holy cross to blue cross is unacceptable. and it's not just about adding forced insured benefits for people it's been taking away the rights of self-determination from people. no president has been granted that level of authority or power from the constitution and simply fails to meet the convent of the governed. and i'm not even a catholic, but i'm unmovebly pro-life, but i, too, object to the notion that i would be required by the dictates of one branch of government without constitution or legislative process to surrender the terms of my faith and freedom to satisfy left wing robbing life

ask you about the catholic church's response to this so-called accommodation that the president mentioned yesterday. >> well, i think we're not completely satisfied on everything we want to see more and hear more and it's important to say, governor, for a long, long time it's been supportive of national health insurance and making sure that the people that are protected. and we don't happen to think that the drugs and birth control and sterilization and health care, and when they say what the president said on the clip there that we'll have the insurance companies pay for it. free isn't free. who is going to pay the premiums, we are. >> one number catholics or christian or any person of faith is asking someone for something that's morally repugnant to us. >> your important is important to make. there's a difference between consideration for what we would call health care be, and first is contraception, pregnancy is not a disease, and people, i understand, may

want to practice contraception and i think that's their right as an individual, as an american and i'm fine with that unless it's aborted and i'm the not fine to be honest with you, i'm opposed because i think that's destructive. let's take it in the general sense. and the the question is, whether, as a catholic institution, you should be be forced to provide something that goes against a religious, spiritual and frankly, common sense doctrine, for not only catholics, but evangelicals and others who are pro-life. >> it's interesting as a catholic priest, i'm aware as in history hospitals came into being because the churches thought of them. universities came into being because the church thought of them and now the thought that president obama should use those as places for contraception, sterilization, seems ridiculously contradictory. it's a lack of respect for our religious principles and as you said in your introduction, governor, it not just about catholics, it's like the old protestant theologian, they

came from one group and i did nothing and finally came to me and did nothing to mep me stand. >> mike: at cpac, i never thought was a young baptist boy in the south i would say this, we're all catholics now. and people who are of faith and pro-life must stand together. you have, however, had some significant blowback, even to the public provision you have taken. and i want to describe some of the things coming at you as a result of taking the stand that you have taken. >> well, it goes through, i think, our whole policy now is very, very much now divided and i think we have a respectable position saying we're not going to participate in giving out the drugs, to patients. not going to say that and saying it on fox news of course the calls came in, e-mails, you people don't like obama. it not about the president, not liking or liking him. i think's he a fine guy, intelligent guy, articulate guy, but i think on policy he's all wrong.

sister kathleen mo heads up our hospitals, as a matter of policy it's a bad policy. as a matter of moralitmorality, bad. and the needs to change and i think the president chose to have that press conference and say we're backing off, but you still leave us responsible for helping to pay those insurance companies that in turn are going to take our money to pay for things we object to morally and by the way, this is not new, as you know having been through state government. i'm paying for abortions through medicaid, i object to that as i object to a federal policy trying to be mandated by president obama. i think the only thing the bishops are going to embrace, there as no compromise on this. >> mike: that's the important point. and you mentioned that catholics don't like obama, but actually catholics voted for obama by a 9 point margin in the last election. in ten of the last elections the way at that catholics voted tended to tip the election one way or the other. and five times they voted

overwhelmingly for democrats and five times for republicans, but in every case, it was a turning point for the election. and will this have a big political impact on the president, by november? >> i think what you saw yesterday was the president recognizing that he has opened up a wound. you know, for the past couple of weeks, we're loud in church to speak about moral issues, we're not suppose today endorse particular candidates and that's what we've been doing, wait a second, you need to know our government is trying to make us pay for service we object to. some people say, yeah, lots of catholics use birth control. that's not the point. as i said once before. many of my jewish friends are mixed on israel unless they're on taxes and then they're on board. the churches have to say, if you take the away rights for catholics to have respect for their faith and religious liberty you're going to hurt everyone ultimately. so i think we have to stand together. and i think it does hurt president obama and he knows we've been talking about church about this and doesn't want to lose any votes and new

york times today the front page says, well, katherine sebelius secretary of health and education, there's catholic and catholic and indicates that her faith is very important to her. >> monsignor, it's a pleasure to have you here. thank you. [applause]. and it's one thing if an individual catholic is at odds with his or her church, but there's a significant issue if the government is at odds with the church in direct violation of not the third, fourth, sixth or tenth amendment. it's that important to establish that the government can neither prohibit more prefer a religious practice and that's why it's important. several states threatened to sue the obama administration on the the president's earlier policy that would have forced catholic hospitals and universities to violate their church doctrine. will they still take the legal action? you're going to find out because i'm going to ask attorney general john bruney

♪ >> mike: this week the attorne >> earlier there week, attorney general john bruney from nebraska, and from texas and south carolina, sent a letter to human services secretary. kathleen sebelius threatening to take legal action from the contraceptive mandate. and joining me now from nebraska, mr. attorney general, great to have you here. i want to ask you, why have you and your colleagues threatened to sue the obama administration? what is the legal basis for the potential lawsuit? >> well, it's a war on religion, this is a violation of the first amendment. freedom of religion is what the country was based upon. you had people that came over on boats all the way from england to worship freely and now you have a federal government that is trying to tell people that they're violating their conscious when they provide insurance. this is problematic and we'll

sue. nothing has changed in this so-called compromise. >> mike: i think that's my next follow-up. the president sort of walked a little of this back yesterday. although i'm not sure that he did, but he appeared to be pushing it now off on insurance companies, you still think the legal issue remains, so, the basis of the lawsuit, how will you approach this. >> well, think about, for example, a catholic dioces that's self-insured, so he they put their money in a pool and whoever might be administered the pool and it's still their money and when you shift it from the employer to the insurance companies, it's still their money and they're fot going to use their money for something that they believe is immoral. nor should they have to. that's the basis of the first moment. what about an insurance companies like catholic mutual, a the catholic based insurance companies, under this new rule they're suppose today just shut down. it's very troubling when you think about it, i met with the bishops in nebraska and we talked about the issue and they have so many services for the poor that they will be

forced to shut down because they will not violate their conscience and all of those poor people have be to be taken care of and they will object the rolls. and this is a morras that the president didn't know about, but if he did, it's unconscionable. >> mike: and you've written a letter, along with texas and others have joined you. how many attorneys general are already part of your action? >> well, just a couple of days, governor, we're at 12 states and i think this will be similar to our obamacare lawsuit which you know will be heard in the supreme court next month. we started that lawsuit in 2010, with 13 states, we're now at 26. this lawsuit, which is, which is similar, a group of states pushing back against the federal government's overreaching, we're starting with 12 now, but i think it could be, by the time we file the lawsuit here in a week or two, it could be, i'm guessing

15 or 20 states and who knows how many by the end. >> will you describe for our audience, the difference between this lawsuit and the original lawsuit against obamacare, some will say i thought you were already suing the obama administration, so what's unique? >> right. well, the obamacare lawsuit is based on congressional power under the commerce clause. how much power does congress have. can they force you, mandate the purchase of insurance. that's the obamacare lawsuit. the heart of it. it's not just about health insurance, it's about the breadth of congressional power. can they make us eat broccoli for breakfast rather than the donut i'd have. and that's the lawsuit. this is congressional power, but focused on the first amendment and freedom of religion. you said it, governor. there's reason that freedom of religion is in the first amendment not the 10th or 12th or 20th. there's nothing more important than to worship as you see fit and not be forced by the

government to violate your conscious. this is not about-- that's part of it. it's bigger than that. it's about government intervention in religion. and the government needs to leave us alone and allow us to worship as we see fit and not to force people to violate their consciouses and that's what this lawsuit is about. >> i appreciate you being with us, attorney general john bruney from nebraska, i wish you'd promise to keep us posted on the promise of the lawsuit. we want to be following it, it's of great interest, i think to every american, even if they disagree with my point of view, i think that it's the point at that they've got to be interested in. thank you for joining us to describe it today. (applause) >> politics is simple. you want to win an election, you've got to get voters motivate today vote for you. and last week we spoke with andrew romano on the reorganization to reelect president obama. and is the republican party ready to do that kind of battle? let's ask rnc chairman. great to have you with us today. >> great to be here. >> mike: last week when we talked to andrew romano, he'd gone inside the belly of the beast and gone inside the obama operation to he see some things that are pretty enlightening.

here is one of the things he said, i'm going to have to react to it. >> they're really, really focused on technology as a way to turn out voters and get votes on election day. we saw some of this in 2008. i think what you're going to see this year, this is a quote from the campaign will make 2008 look pre historic and now you log into facebook and instead of sending a message to all of your friends, they say send it to your five friends in the swing district in pennsylvania who are really concerned about taxes. >> mike: and it's obvious that there is a very sophisticated technological approach to this election from the obama campaign. and are the republicans ready to match this sort of effort? >> yeah, absolutely. and you know, besides the money site, i know you're asking about the technology, but you've got to have the money and technology to put together that type of massive operation, whether it be

social media or microtargeting through the use of social media, but we've got the money to be able to do that this time around, but more than that, i think you know this, governor, it's about two things, one, you've got to have the right message and the infrastructure. the and the international committee is focusing on both things. especially the infrastructure when it comes to the digital reach that we could compete. i think our message this time around, the message of liberty and freedom and the big issues that are facing america, those are going to be the issues that are going to drive the electoral rat and if you don't have the message, these guys can talk all day long, they'll make 2008 look miniature in comparison. if you're on the wrong side of the message, you can have all the infrastructure in the world, but it's not going to get you over the finish line. the key is to be able to do both and we've got the money, the people in place, and the infrastructure to be able to do it, but on top of it, the most important thing, in politics and in winning, is being right on the message, and that's where we're going to be and why we're going to

win. >> i think it goes back to the old story you may have heard it in wisconsin growing up. the company developed a wonderful dog food and had great technology and scientifically advanced and marketed successfully and effectively, but the company went out of business because the dogs wouldn't eat the stuff so it ultimately comes down to, will the american people eat the stuff they're going to be served up by the obama machine? let's take a look at another comment that andrew romano made and we'll get you to respond to it as well. >> it's behemoth. there are about 50,000 square feet of office space. at the time they had more than 200 staffers in the headquarters, for comparison at the time romney's campaign the biggest republican campaign had about 98. you go back to bill clinton in 96 or george h.w. bush, 40, george h.w. bush 10 or fewer at this point so they are ramped up early so the scope of it is really impressive. >> mike: you know, ryan, when republicans hear this sort of

thing and see the huge starving that the obama organization has and look at republican candidates and even romney who has the most advanced operation is nowhere near that level of staffing. explain to people how the rnc does provide an infrastructure of staffing, as the republican nominee is eventually chosen? >> you bet. and you know, the first thing i think of when i hear that we've got a president that's just in love with campaigning. i wish he was, you know, 25% as in love with being president and leading this country as he is in campaigning. [applause] >> but besides that, i will tell you-- i will tell you that the republican national committee is very unique under the law. we're the only organization in america that can take the money that we raise and legally combine it and coordinate it with the presidential nominee and we're prepared to do that. some of you might be surprised we actually have more cash in the bank than the democratic national committee, for as much fund raising as the president is doing. rnc is actually doing better

so we're proud of that. but just remember, and i caution people, that get too caught up in this. hillary clinton and barack obama, you remember in '08 nearly gouged each other's eyes out fighting until the end of june, the national convention and splitting the party nearly in half and guess what all of that drama and tough primary helped their side and it helped barack obama and he won pretty easily. so, the idea na barack obama has a 50,000 square foot building and a bunch of employees and our candidates are still in a primary race, history shows that actually, it's an advantage to our party to have this debate. i will tell you, governor, when you were running, and you stayed in the race, it provided excitement on our side. when you got out of the race, guess what? we put everyone to sleep and everyones was talking about hillary clinton and barack obama for the next four monthsment so there's a value to having this serious debate in this country, not about the republican party or the democratic party, but by the very idea of america, and

freedom and what we'll want in life and whether we want a cradle to grave society or whether we want an america that's based on the concepts of individual freedoms and liberty and that's a debate worth having. >> mike: i want to thank you for making that comment because there were a lot of people asking me to get out earlier. i'm going to quote you, ryan, i should have stayed in (applause) >> i remember rally, i remember rallies that you had, governor, and you know, what people don't realize is that these rallies, even though we were neutral in the race, i was the chairman of the state party. everyone that came into the rallies, guess what, we got their e-mail addresses and figured out whether they wanted to help us down the road and helped us recruit people so that in the fall they had different faces in the headquarters and and all of that helps the message and the movement and that's something that can get lost if you don't really follow this stuff. >> well, that's a great point to make and ryan, thank you

lobby area, there was a lockdown, the police were out and separating people from cpac, from the protesters outside, so, nobody could believe there were many young people, like 18 and 19 year olds, that were scared. like what's going on out there and you could hear chants, chants, chants. >> and this is private property, on a driveway, you have to walk up a private property driveway and the people are threatening people who are there, they're there constitutionally and have the right to do and they're threatening and men naysing and attacked this is the occupy movement. do you remember when dissent was patriotic during the anti-war movement, but the tea party has been deemed by the shock forces and they've been deemed an unconstitutional group. you're not allowed to speak, and they shout us down. so, i went out there and i started to confront them, because i'm-- >> 'cause you had-- >> well, i'm mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.

[applause] >> that people have a right to protest, cpac, i get that and i'm okay with that because that's what makes america a wonderful country. but, shouldn't, if the union is going to recruit and pay people to protest, shouldn't they train them what they're protesting so they know what the heck they're upset about? >> of course, but, oh, my goodness, someone got paid $60 and hopefully now he's not going to have to worry where his next meal is come from. and out of work for a year? at the end of the day the fact that they're dirty, the fact that they stink, and don't look like you andrew, does it take away from the fact that ceo's make 300 times more than their employees. when our economy was working, 20 times more. >> and my-- >> inequality. >> and the report card and-- >> and i'll-- got to go to the report card, but the one thing i would want to say, if the unions are going to pay, they ought to pay them a living wage and give them a lot more than $60
