statement basically saying that the president, maybe his policies are outside of the christian value system and the obama administration didn't waste any time in firing back against that. they say that the latest low in the republican primary campaign that's been fueled by distortions, ugliness and searing pessimism and negativity. going after someone's faith. i don't know if few politicians tread in that area, if they believe or don't believe something. >> he's made-- santorum made some lightning rod statements, income inequality. >> clayton: he didn't qualify. >> dave: these were misinterpreted by some. rick santorum was later asked, are you saying that the president is not a christian, rick santorum says if he says he's a christian, he's a christian. >> he need to clarify what he said. >> clayton: what santorum--

he's going to be on sunday shows, but he's saying that his policies are out of the christian value system talking about the green energy jobs and bailout money, outside of the christian value system. didn't necessarily come across in the first statements and later clarified that. >> dave: and also taking aim at mitt romney and for romney, it's not the first time that he's had a very successful path questioned by a fellow republican. this time, we haven't heard a lick of this from a republican, rick santorum criticizing mitt romney's time turning around the 1992 salt lake city winter olympics. here is what he said. one of mitt romney's greatest accomplishments, one of the things he talks about the most how he heroically showed up on the scene and bailed out and resolved the problems of the salt lake city olympic games.

of north florida and southeastern georgia and south carolina and continue to track the thunderstorms as they fire up early today and otherwise two other systems rolling through parts of the intermountain west. let's take a look where they are, one across the southeast and split into two batches of rain, the first batch out of georgia and parts of the carolinas and you can see the second air of unsettled weather bringing in rainfall across mississippi and also, tennessee and some of that moisture starting to hit some of the colder air off to the north and starting to see the white up on the maps in northern kentucky and west virginia and more white stuff popping up as it continues to hit the colder air and temperatures dropping as we get some sunshine. otherwise out west, snow across portions of utah into the cascades and along the intermountain west where we're looking at some of the higher snowfall accumulations through tomorrow. generally 6 to 12 inches of

snow along the areas above 8,000 feet. that's pretty high up rng nonetheless be careful driving through there. virginia, west virginia and kentucky and expect today see three to six inches, higher accumulations along the higher elevations where we could be looking at accumulations of up to eight to 12 inches of snow, along some of the higher spots and current temperatures across the mid atlantic, above freezing so it's going to take time for the temperatures to drop. they're generally at about the mid 40's right now. 49 in raleigh, 48 in atlanta, and new york city, not too bad for this time of the year, 36 degrees there and highs, or current temperatures a little colder off to the west and minneapolis 21 right now, guys. >> dave: thank you, maria. the most buzzed about story of the week has to be linsanity happening here in new york and the new york knicks star jeremy lin, burst in with

decent system. in the short-term, this could be an epic disaster. >> juliet: yeah, basically what it does, kind of wipes the slate clean. so, here is is the numbers here. 7,000 teachers basically are off the hook, now, for problems that they've caused. 2600 plus teachers, with one poor rating, not fired. so, basically, you've grandfathered in. >> clayton: the issue is this won't take effect until 2014. and we've got two years for the stuff you're seeing on the clean. wiping the slate clean so two years, in the meantime, 7,000 teachers off the hook and even includes those-- this even includes, sorry. >> dave: a party going on in the studio. >> clayton: and this even includes those rubber rooms. if you saw in "waiting for superman" the famous documentary of teachers basically this trouble and basing union violations and get to sit in the so-called rubber rooms for a long time

conservative, is a conservative party and rick santorum sings the music of social conservatives. so, he's-- he can certainly win, can certainly win the nomination. i would think though romney is not necessarily going off santorum the way that the obama people would. because romney is not going to attack him on social conservative issues because that's going to offend the base. that's one area they can go. but, and i think, there were other areas where they're going to start looking at his background, like there was a mini scandal in his last turn in the senate when it turned out that, he was basically living in virginia, even though he was getting like a sort of credit-- >> this is what they're going to do. there's no smoking gun on rick santorum, but the sound bite yesterday that inequality is good, we need inequality, also dealing with the contraception issue, the fact that he's pro-life. so what liberals are going to

winter, but it's been a mild winter and heating oil. the numbers up 91.5% from 2009 to 2012. from january of '09 to right now. >> right, when i'm looking at that the first thing i think of is something we got from our senior editor over at the fox business network, he was noting that during the first 37 months of the bush administration, versus the first 37 months of the obama administration, so, bush had a rise of 12%. obama, 95%. so, gasoline prices are soaring, and all the networks should be covering this, something that americans if, you don't have-- if you're paying at the pump you don't have money for groceries, for clothing or whatever else you want to buy. >> clayton: you know good journalism as you're digging through the numbers. who, what, where of the story is so important. so why, why is this happening? why are they going through the roof? >> why are the numbers happening? >> rocketing at the pump. >> we don't have an energy

policy and this is what the administration campaigned on. you have sound bites showing hillary clinton and nancy pelosi campaigning on idea there was going to be great policies, but where are the policies and domestic drilling and the permits waiting in the gulf of mexico? so, this, where, it's about nat gas. we have so much in reserves for nat gas we could switch to that when i talk to experts and i talk to a lot of them, they talk about a lack of an energy policy in the states and demand abroad and basically our hands are tied and you start to see oil rising. >> clayton: what about talking unrest in the middle east, concerns over iran cutting off the straits of hormuz. >> that's a huge issue and seeing the rise in prices which you noted the top of the segment, so early in the year is bad news. we've never been seen the rise this early in the calendar year, the it's a seasonal thing and every expert knows, buthushing--

>> welcome back, if i remember the u.s. supreme court justice and now the new york time says the u.s. constitution is outdated and reporter writes, the constitution is out of step with the rest of the world in failing to protect our right to travel, presumption of innocence and entitlement to food, education and health care. so is the constitution too old to be useful? joining us right now for a fair and balanced debate is chief council and policy director, carrie and washington university at law and co-author declining influence of the u.s. constitution, david, we know where you stand on that. the new york times piece, read you another quote. says, but the constitution is out of step with rest of the world. explain why you think that's the case. >> well, our constitution is not just out of step, the the world is out of step with our own reality.

at this point we really, the constitution and document so old that it no longer affects what we do in the constitution. we have two, the large c constitution, and a small c constitution, political parties nor where in the constitutional document. they're a part of our government and the agencies that people deal with and the things in the constitution that don't really govern the reality, for example, the electoral college, that's not how we choose our president. so it's not surprising that other countries wouldn't copy the u.s. constitution given it doesn't describe our own system. >> justice ruth ginsburg of the supreme court said i would not look to the united states constitution if i was drafting a constitution in 2012. she recommends the south africa constitution, canadian charter of rights. other countries are not copying our constitution as it were, but i don't think it should be treat today a popularity contest.

whether it produces a stable government that protects basically religious freedoms and our basic fundamental civil rights, those should be the grounds to test and i think on those grounds the american constitution fares well. a government that stands the test of time and oldest continuing in use constitution and i think that's all favor about constitution. >> sherry, do you think that david does have any point? >> i actually think that justice gyps burg and some of t of-- ginsburg, and the points that he made, our liberty, we have structural procedures and we give limits to the government and all the rights are retained by the people. >> juliet: and david, the last word. the constitution may be part of a general decline in american power and prestige.

an interesting back and forth there. in utah, romney's favorability through the roof and polls show he's more favorable than john huntsman the former governor of utah. >> it seems like that's more his home state than michigan, michigan is where he was born and trailing santorum. and to your point doing well in the state and arizona as well. >> juliet: newt gingrich's home state was georgia and he was visiting the atlanta and shaking hands and kissing baby-- well, popular guy down there, not as popular as i cording to the straw poll, santorum coming outen 0 top with 40. gingrich 27, paul and romney. >> clayton: much is made of the straw polls and attacking mitt romney over the cpac, saying i don't stack straw polls or the fact that romney bussed in a lot of individuals. the straw polls you pay to go

into. how much weight you put between the few hundred people inside one of the straw polls, but in newt's back yard, 40% is a sizable number. >> dave: i'm sure he'll tell you atlanta area snot much representative of the staut of georgia. much like in florida. newt did well in northern florida. an interesting breakdown, but newt gingrich clearly betting on the south on super tuesday, in particular his home state. here is the strategy. >> a georgia conservative has a certain advantage across tennessee, kentucky, alabama, you know, arkansas, mississippi. louisiana. in the long run, we survived tim pawlenty, who was the establishment's first choice and then we survived congresswoman bachmann and then came back survived herman cain, had a great surge for a while and came back and

did you think anything like this could have been happening behind his wall? >> oh, yes, well, unfortunately the profile, he fit the profile of what the media was presenting at that time. of people engaged in those type of activities, so, i-- i just thought he would be that type of person and-- >> and you also said that he would receive packages and say they're books. >> right. >> and you felt like maybe not? >> well, they-- initially when he first moved in, and in several days he received a lot of books and so, i assumed he planned ahead of time with his girlfriend to move in, knowing that he wouldn't be approved for any lease and that he, i think he used his girlfriend. and this is my conjecture at this point. >> clayton: he name wasn't on the lease. what happened when you told police? this was two years ago, what

did they? did they take it up or-- >> they have to do a job and treat all in fairness not doing anything. >> and i accused him of making bombs, fit that profile, i don't know for sure, but suspect he's doing something illegally. and so the police went in to investigate. and well, there are several not very important details, but-- >> the best detail of all, they spent a lot of time tracking him, watching him. monitoring him and then now we know how it ended up, with a fake bomb, watched at every step and arrested at the very end ap perhaps thanks to your eagle eye on all of this, frank. >> well, i was-- i worked for many years to have, to have to have a security awareness. >> clayton: yeah. >> and i worked at the, patent

do and i'm going to complain until the end of time. that's what he wants and frankly due to his own rhetorical skill. pretty good at getting away with it and in addition to the media bias plays a part as well, but he does tend to have it both ways on a lot of issues and i think he'll continue on. >> and the republicans are in a tough spot there. if they opposed payroll tax cut extension, they're hammered as the party against the middle class. >> and if you have to off set it or won't and democrats wouldn't go for it with fairly easy thing like freezing frl pay, i think a good solution and democrats wouldn't go for it, but the president is hunky-dory with that being unpaid for. >> we'll see this, the tension of the bush tax cuts the end of the year, the president in 2010 pushing for the extension is going along with it, even when he was campaigning against letting it roll back. is that where the hipocracy

comes from, is that why the right is right on this one? >> it's sort of transparent that he ended up going along with it and nows' back to bashing them as much as ever and there's a philosophy, you do not have to offset the bush tax cuts, because if you say it's pay for every tax cut. you're presuming, your money is the government money. that's not a loss of revenue, it's your money you're getting back. i'm not sure they have to be paid for, but him paying on both sides is hypocritical. >> let's talk about the boeing plant, a major political issue a couple of months ago, boeing wanted to move a major plant for the dream liner down to south carolina where they weren't required to have unions. nlrp, supposed to be independent and has direct obama appoint east was challenging the building of that plant and was going to shut it down and suddenly the president is talking up this very plant. listen to what he said this week. >> the dream liner is the

plane of the future. and by building it here, boeing is taking advantage of a huge opportunity that exists right now to bring more jobs and manufacturing back to the united states of america. [applaus [applause]. >> your thoughts? >> this one cracks me up. you don't get credit, if you have your boot on someone's neck, you don't get credit for lifting it right before they choke out. that's basically what happened. the nlrb says this isn't america anymore, you can't move factories lily nilly to any states. the and they force add deal with the machinists union and now we'll remove complaint and freely building in south carolina and the president bragging about this i think is a new step. he's first gotten credit for saving creative jobs, and jobs likely existed and mythical now credit for the jobs that

be seeing snow further off to the south from us. and seeing snow across central virginia and western into eastern kentucky and the state of west virginia, we could be talking about up to half a foot of snow or higher amounts, locally. especially in the higher amounts for them and tracking the risk for severe storms across portions of northern florida and earlier in the day and that will continue to push eastward and otherwise across the west, very unsettled, there's two storm systems moving through portions of the inner mountain west and impacting areas as far north and west as the cascades of snow. we've been talking about snowfall accumulations eight feet in the inner mountain west. and the snow, good news for them. taking a look at the regions, northeast, not too bad this time of the year. 48 your high in philadelphia. 38 in pittsburgh and 30 over in buffalo, you're still going to have snow showers out across portions of upstate new

people think of it as the sort of the pressure of the decision, a premier decision in the history of the presidency. >> clayton: perhaps shaped the history of all time and of course saved american lives at the end of that. fdr is third on your list here. entering world war ii. >> right, franklin roosevelt len lease. he is remembered for getting us out of the war. and i would argue him getting us into the war before pearl harbor. in 1940, england was close to suing for peace with germany, and needed munitions and supplies and appropriate to lend them money free, even though there was an isolationist congress and country wanted to remain neutral and i would argue the most momentous to get us into the war at the time he did and turned out to be pressient. >> and the panama canal.

tr thought we would be a super power before anybody else and knew that we need add two ocean navy and in order to do at that we needed to create the panama canal. he essentially helped foment in revolution in colombia which owned panama and panama was a break away country and had a deal with us he had a famous quote, i'll act now and let congress debate it later and changed the nature of this country. >> and sort of what abraham lincoln, act now and let the people deal with it, signing the emancipation proclamation. >> lincoln wrestled with it, he did not believe some of the mission of the civil war was eradicate slavery. he needed to do something do change the trajectory of the war and went by himself in the summer and wrote emancipation and told his cabinet, i'm not asking for your point of view, we're going to do this.

it's like google broke into the house and looked at my underwear drawer and book shelf. they say they do it to get me better ads. clearly, sure, they could snd me better ads for bras and books that i like, but he they would be invading my privacy and worse yet in this instance, google left the door open. when they put the tracking mechanisms on your computer through safari, they didn't limit it to our own, but opened the door for all third party trackers and they say that was inadvertent, but lots of information was collected about people without their consent. >> dave: what types of things are they gathering about us? >> well, it's not just iphone users because by their very nature, google has access to the operating system of the droid and what google ganers in all sorts of settings is texts of our e-mails, what our google searches are and what we watch on youtube and

theology. >> a lightning rod. >> yeah, that didn't sit too well with the obama administration, not a theology based on the bible, a different theology. and the obama white house firing back and says this about what santorum said the latest low in an ugliness, searing pessimism and negativity, though senator santorum walked the comments back and clarified them later seeing if the president says he's a christian, i believe's he a christian and he says he was referring to the policies of president obama not keeping with the christian faith. >> the president wasn't the only target though, he went after mitt romney regarding the olympics, listen to what he had to say about this. >> he bailed out the salt lake city olympic games, by heroically going to congress and asking them for tens of millions of dollars to bail out the salt lake olympic games.

in an earmark. in an earmark for the salt lake olympic games. >> dave: interesting because this is the second time now that the things mitt romney uses to describe why he should be president, why his private sector experience is an asset, it's the second time republicans have attacked him for just that. and i'm sure mitt romney's camp would say, every olympics gets government money and here is in fact their direct quote. sometimes he when you shoot from the the hip, you end up shooting yourself in the foot. there is a pretty wide gulf between seeking money for post 9/11 security at the olympics and seeking ear marks for poe har bear exhibits at the pittsburgh zoo. and you know that santorum is taking heat and romney did rise millions from the private sector for the games. >> and some calling him quote, the king of ear marks with his time in the senate, and

further, the romney campaign says that he voted for these ear marks during the salt lake city games, that senator santorum voted along with that ear mark to go to the olympic games. >> juliet: what do you think of mr. santorum's remarks, getting a heated? >> yeah, we'll ask chris wallace about that. one thing you're all feeling every time you pull up to the gas station is the pain at the pump in california. no, you can't just say that. >> dave: gas prices north of four bucks a gallon. the highest ever at this time of year. you can see the average, 3.53 a gallon. up 21 cents since january 1st. will this become a political issue? one would imagine if you looked at our past, it usually is. >> clayton: yeah, looking at the past, you look over the past few years during the push administration, nancy pelosi was repeatedly going after president george w. bush on the high gas prices. fake a listen.

>> democrat in november, if you don't like the outrageous gas prices, if you feel that the oil companies have been given a free ride by the president and the vice-president, vote for democrats who will vote for changes in our energy poly. we've got a democratic alternative. give us a chance. >> and george bush got his hands around the problem, prices wouldn't be, $3 a gallon. it would be 1.80 a gallon, 1.50 a gallon. >> and the administration poy for big oil have resulted in record dependence on foreign oil, leaving american families and businesses to pay even higher businesses. >> juliet: he was on the show yesterday and talking, we had asked him about this and he says the media-- this is what he had to say. >> we won't hear much about it from the media, the other thing we should touch on here, remember, bush was pounded because the media was making an issue and pounded about

please, dear god, don't let them fall on me, don't mauck me-- and i remember seeing the play and come out to the audience, keep those cats away from me. >> dave: you're right. he did a nice job and perfectly uncomfortable with what was happening there. the politics now, rick santorum at or near the lead nationally in the polls. leading in michigan, a problem for mitt romney, as you know, his home state and some are whispering now that if santorum wins michigan, some could call for a new g.o.p. candidate. is there any possibility of this happening in leading to this, disputed contended convention? >> well, yes, there's certainly a possibility of it and it's absolutely the case that some top believes are talking about it. this is an if, if romney were to lose. michigan is his home state, his father was the governor

there for three terms, it's an important swing state. if romney couldn't be beat santorum in a republican primary, how would he have any chance of beating barack obama in a general election contest in michigan? and there are some people who are saying, one, romney would be very damaged, two, santorum and gingrich would have a very hard time, maybe not any chance of beating obama and that there would be, certainly, there's be a call. whether it would happen or not for one of the party elders, one of the people we were all talking about a year ago, for instance, jeb bush, the governor governor of florida, to get into the race and i will tell you the thinking is advanced enough that they have looked and there are a bunch of big states, like california, like new jersey, and in several other smaller states, where the filing deadline has not been get yet. a candidate could be on the ballots and might get enough delegates to throw it to an

open convention in tampa in august and we'll have karl rove on the show and he thinks it's a crazy idea and i'll ask it again. >> clayton: might be a sliver of a chance. i know promos work. i caught a promo for fox news sunday your interview with former speaker of the house, newt gingrich, i've got to watch that, interestingly when georgia, the polling, straw poll showing that rick santorum is ahead in newt gingrich's back yard. what do you think he'll make of that? >> well, we'll ask him about it. that would be devastating were that to happen. gingrich has, you know, this is the darnedest campaign i've been seen and i've been covering national politics since 1976. gingrich less than a month ago was the front runner for the nomination and now hanging on by his fingernails, he's been up and down twice, and the question is, does he have a third act? we'll be talking to him at the top of the hour about that, if

>> welcome back, 23 minutes past the hour. a drug can help cure leukemia in kids and many are told they may have to go without it because of a massive shortage. doctors and parents are concerned even though the f.d.a. stepped in and supplies won't be sold as quickly as needed. joining us is owen mcmasters diagnosed with leukemia is here, and his dad, dr. kelly mcmasters, a cancer surgeon and we appreciate you both being here from louisville, kentucky right now. doctor, start with you, the drug is called methotrexate and it's fairly inexpensive and that's a part of the problem. >> that's a big part of the problem. i have a vile of it it here. i don't know if you can see that. >> juliet: we can. >> this doeses $1.50 it's a

generic drug no longer on patent, it's been around for 50 years and there's little incentive for pharmaceutical companies to manufacture the drug because they don't make any profit on it. and this is part of the problem for shortages of the not only this drug, but 283 other drugs, many of which are absolutely critical for treatment of cancer patients and other patients with critical illnesses. >> juliet: owens, you've been going through chemotherapy and dealing with this now, how are you feeling? how are you to go? >> i'm doing all right. >> juliet: you're doing all right. >> and like stick through it. >> juliet: and you really want this drug to be back into your system because it's helping you? >> yes. >> juliet: all right. doctor, the thing about this drug is that it is very effective in these patients, is it not? >> yes, and all is a type of leukemia in children, the most common kind of cancer in

children and mettotrexate, even though it's a 50-year-old drug, it's critical. with it 80 to 90% of the children will be cured of cancer, without it, it won't. >> juliet: from a personal perspective, the government is jumping in on so many things. you would think this would be something, you know, cure kids of cancer. at least helping to cure most kids of cancer if they get this medicine you would think there would be something to do to up this process. here is a statement from the f.d.a. it says the issue of met mettotrexate has been with f.d.a. hoping to ramp up. doctor, your concern it's not enough in time. >> f.d.a. has known more than six months and aggressively talking about it and not fixing the problem. >> juliet: talking about it. >> it's an absolute national disgrace, when the united states cannot produce a cheap,

♪ >> hey, welcome back to "fox & friends" everybody, dave briggs, juliet huddy, clayton morris, an interesting deal done here in new york city, wiping the slate clean. we thought it was a good news to evaluate teachers instead of keeping bad teachers on the books, finally a way to evaluate whether they were actually teaching kids. long-term pretty good, short-term, maybe not. >> yeah, the deal just penned recently and the ink is drying on this thing, waving it in the era little bit between governor cuomo, mayor bloomberg and the new york teachers union. it's interesting because what it does, it basically wipes the slate clean currently and any of these teachers for the next two years can't be fired. down the line, they can be fired, but currently, take a look what this does. it takes 7,000 teachers off the hook for any bad behavior

and wipes the slate clean. >> juliet: let's talk about some of the things the teachers have done and still be employed. one guy posted on facebook, a teacher who posted on facebook, referred to some kids as the devil's spawn. and wiped clean. they're making an effort to do something about it, but again, not employed, and he so, from june of 2014, no matter what you've done, yeah, that was the concession from the union, no matter what you've done, even the teachers sitening a quote, rubber room, not teaching, getting paid to not teach, you're still stuck with them and paying for them for at least another two years, until you can begin this evaluation process. and this is a problem because basically, every state in this country is facing this question. how do we evaluate teachers barely, are they actually getting through to our kids and you think, this is a good thing, what they did in new york and major cuts going to cost taxpayers millions of

has great basketball instincts unique competitive drive, and those things you may not see on a first test run. >> dave: describe for me the moment when you saw this kid and said, yeah, something special about him. i want him on my team. what was it about him? >> it's kind of a unique situation the first time i saw him he didn't overly impressed, but i got lucky because i happened to see a game two days later, he was in another gym and happened to pop in gym to see what the commotion was about and played at a high level, elevated against better competition and really rose to the challenge and you could see, one thing about jeremy, he has these things that basketball coaches, you can't teach. he really has had an instinct to play the game, got a good feel for the game, a good read on the game. and it's as if someone i know would be highly coachable. >> dave: i'm interested in what you said, he elevated playing against better competition. played in ivy league, suddenly

in the first eight games almost 25 points a game and almost 9 assists per game and how do you explain that performance against the best players in the world when he wasn't doing that in the ivy league? >> well, it's interesting because he's actually been doing this since high school. a senior with palo alto, led a small school team to win the state title in california and then when he got to harvard, major games where he played terrific at u-conn, dropped 30 points at u-conn in a losing effort and had some huge games at boston college right in harvard's back yard, and to be a significant player and now getting into the nba and lucky. and put in a situation where, there was opportunity, there was a necessity for some scoring, and he's just, really continued to rise, to the occasion when the game is on the line. >> dave: how about the person behind jeremy lin? we know he talks a lot about his faith. tell us about the type of man he is that allowed him to get

through these tough times, not being drafted, being passed-- or not played by golden state, not played by houston, sitting on the bench in new york, what type of person allowed him to get through that. >> i think it goes back to his family. a great family, great support system in place, and obviously, a highly intelligent, highly intelligent kid and great faith and not something he pushes on people. he's a very private kind of person, very easy going, easy to get along with, very respectful of others and what you're seeing in the other videos and interviews he's doing, that's really who he is. he's very unselfish, very humble, everything he's talking about, teamwork it's about the knicks and not about jeremy, that's who he is. >> dave: absolutely. all right, bill holden was the coach at harvard when jeremy lin came to play there and now the coach at middlesex school. >> thank you. >> dave: jeremy plays on national tv against the dallas

>> welcome back, general motors raking in record profits. the earned 7.6 billion dollars last year, a lot of money for the taxpayer owned company. but instead of paying back the taxpayers, gm is giving workers bonus checks. $7,000 each. michelle fields for the daily caller joins us now to explain this, good morning, michelle. >> good morning, yeah, so, gm did very well this year in north america, they didn't do so well in europe where they lost 2 billion dollars and over 100 million dollars in south america, but the only reason they did well this year is because of the tsunami in japan that disrupted the global supply chain for toyota and honda and made us competitive this year and won't be so exit tiff this year with toyota and honda recovering. because they earned a profit in north america, providing $7,000 checks to their union members which is crazy because i want to know where my profit share check is it for bailing out these guys. >> clayton: let's be clear on

some record breaking profit numbers, throw it up on the screen. strong sales in the u.s. and china of course, because what you talked about there, lack of cars coming out of japan with the tsunami and effects there. in 2012, a big positive outlook and based on that. but i have to ask you, you bring up the point about the $7,000 check handed out to workers, we put restrictions on this for the executive paychecks, didn't we? so the top executives wouldn't see a big bump in pay and that's something that we americans were saying, look, don't want the big bonuses going to the phis if taxpayers are footing the bill. why are the taxpayers footing bills for the workers then? >> because thr he' allies of obama. huge unions are obama's friends. it's crazy, it's as if we're finishing those who work in the private sector, right? but then we're rewarding those who work for the state. why is it that people work in the private sector must face realities of recession with you yet, the people who work in unions are getting $7,000 checks? what about the taxpayers who

helped bail out these people? it's not as if gm is doing great. like i said, they're doing terrible around the world. in china they're slowing down and the only they did well was because of the tsunami in japan. if you look at january, their profits are down 6%, whereas honda and toyota are back up again. they're not going to be that competitive this year and not doing that well, they shouldn't be handing out $7,000 checks for union members. >> the stock price is significantly down, u.s. got a bad deal. would still need to get back up for the u.s. to recoup investment. >> that's right, right now stocks are $25, $30 less than what it needs to sell in order for taxpayers to get their money out of the company and obama likes to say that the bailout was in great success because apparently, general motors paid off their loan, but that's actually not true. they paid off the loan that we

he talked about policies not being in line in terms of the jobs and stimulus and they don't perfectly line up and perhaps will shed more light to your point on that debate. coming up, on wednesday. >> clayton: i imagine he'll get question about that. >> he's getting attention from the media. a guy, when it first started happening, everybody declared the candidacy, and it was like crickets when you talked about them and now, he talked about in equality and got a lot of attention for that. >> clayton: and a lot of attention for the poll numbers, a bunch of polls came out on valentine's day, and it was sweet for him. also, yesterday, he got new information out from the straw poll out of georgia, newt gingrich's backyard where he's surging. 47% and 27% in newt gingrich's own backyard in georgia. >> dave: and a new attack on mitt romney. a couple months ago, republicans went after his time at a bain

capital and rick perry calling it vulture capitalism and attacking the private equity experience, mitt romney has, well, now, rick santorum turning his attention on mitt romney's job with the 1992 salt lake city olympic games, and they celebrated ten years of the job romney did, one he touts often on these stumps and here's what he says, though, is the untold truth about those gains. >> he bailed out the salt lake city olympic games by heroically going to congress and asking them for tens of millions of dollars to bail out the salt lake olympic games. [applause]. >> well, here's what his camp said, they issued a statement, and they said, sometimes when you shoot from the hip you end up shooting yourself in the foot. there is a wide gulf between seeking money for post 9/11 security at the olympics and seeking earmarks for polar bear exhibits at the pittsburgh zoo. >> clayton: santorum hit on the

earmarks issue, saying they, the federal government came in and bailed it out and you called upon the federal government to do that, and it is interesting, the romney campaign has not backed off saying there were federal dollars used but also were quick to point out rick santorum while senator voted for the earmark, he's now criticizing, the back and forth -- people forget their voting records? i don't know, don't dive into it well enough to know what is in there. >> dave: and the turnaround of the salt lake games was mostly about private money raising money from the private sector and, meanwhile, newt gingrich has one strategy, clearly this: he'll wait until super tuesday and he needs to win big, in the straw poll, trailing santorum. here's what newt gingrich says. >> a georgia conservative has advantage, across tennessee, alabama, arkansas, kentucky,

founder of citizens for affordable energy, john hofmeister. nice see you. year after year we hear about the prognostication, it will hit $5 a gallon, do you think it could happen this time? >> well i think we're at the cross-hairs of an unusual situation, that is probably -- probably can only get worse and here's why. we're the world's largest consuming nation but we now have a rival, called china. china's growth and demand for gasoline is in the millions and millions-plus barrel per day every day, going from 9 to 15 million barrels a day by 2015 because of the all of the uses of oil they have now adopted as a consumer society and we also face some of the most unpredictable, volatile, geopolitical situations, whether it is iran, iraq, sudan, you name it and there is no end in

sight to the geopolitics, which worries people about oil and the united states of america, the largest consumer to adopt government policies to enable domestic production to increase and meet these conditions has been nil, nada, nothing and that is unfortunate for american consumers. >> dave: are there actions the obama administration could take to start lowering the price? >> yes. but it is almost too late. even if the president gets a second term. i said to senator obama, in the summer of 2007 as he's running for president, senator, you need a robust drilling program in your first term. if you do not have a robust drilling program you will face gasoline prices when you run for re-election if you win in 2012 that will not help you one iota.

his response was, we're going to do biofuels. and, i said, biofuels is not going to make a difference in the gasoline price, not by 2012. you need a robust drilling program and what we have seen is anti-drilling, coming from the administration, highlighted most particularly by the moratorium in the gulf of mexico, following the bp disaster, there has been no action and it takes years to get things rolling and had he had an active program, by his second term he would have been able to point to increases in domestic production that would offset the rise in demand from china, as it relates to u.s. consumption. >> clayton: three things you list as solutions, a plan that would work, getting back, you mentioned earlier, getting back to 10 million barrels of oil per day, producing that and 3-4 million from biofuels and natural gas of which you talked about president obama supporting and drive more fuel efficient cars. when do you see any of this

happening? we saw all the sort of failure, i guess you could say of the chevy volt. does that rise back to buying more suvs again? >> people love suvs, but let's be clear, we used to produce 10 million barrels a day in the country and we're go 7 and i suggest, go back to 10. we know where the oil is but the government has to allow the companies to get the oil and secondly, we can turn natural gas into methyl, flex fuel engines can use coupled with ethanol from biofuel, that combination could be very powerful, offsetting opec imports and the fuel efficient imports are fuel efficient designs of vehicles and the volt is part of that, perhaps, but, more importantly, is the internal combustion engine and design of the vehicle which is already targeted to improve its mileage over the course of the decade and we can continue those practices, the goal is not to

the same time the movie leaves you challenged and leaves you thinking, what would you do and, in most respects, what is really flattering about it is that it leaves you with a premise that, who are these people, we want to get to know them more and our movie and our book came out the same day and what has happened is this movie really lends itself to, for people to want to see the book, and, we have been very blessed. the movie is still number one in the box office, we got word last night that it went out on friday and we'll see what happens. >> i'll be seeing it tomorrow, presidents day. we are showing pictures on the side and pictures of you on the red carpet and also, pictures of you, in the hospital, i mean, the car, the mangled car. this happened ten weeks into your marriage, i mean, you guys were really, seriously newlyweds. what was it that helped you sort of bring things back together? the answer is, your flait.

explain how it happened and how you feel -- your faith and explain how it happened and how you feel about it being left out of the movie. >> what we discovered, i lost a year-and-a-half before the car accident, to four months after and the memory of my husband was completely wiped out and i made a vow before god, good times and bad, sickness and health and i made a promise on my husband on september 18th, 1993 i would stay with him for my life and i was going to be a person of my word and do what i said i would do and i held tightly to my faith, i can do all things through christ, who gives me strength, philippians and i held onto god's word and knew i could get through it with the lord's help and, hollywood does, you know, hollywood movies and we think it is a great movie. we were a little bummed that, you know, the lord got left out of the of our story, because without him we don't have a story. >> is that what made you come

back together to refine the love, rediscover the love? >> i think, it is a big part of it, and, you know, we have two sets of families, that have celebrated, our parents celebrated more than 100 anniversaries together. and, so, that -- accompanying that with our foundation and our faith, it is very important to us and, obviously, our faith plays out in the book and our book debuted as the number one book on the "new york times" best-seller list for nonfiction and number 7, overall, and, the movie, again, really lends itself, for people to want to lead the book and that is the blessing in all of this. >> and you obviously met chanting and the other star of the movie, right? >> yes. we spent quite a bit of time with chanting and rachel. and, they did a great job and studied us and, they really spent a lot of time, watching us on interviews and things like that. they were well prepared. >> they capture you very well.

blatantly disregarding a u.n. resolution to end the crackdown and for president assad to step aside. he's accused of planning a suicide attack at the u.s. capital and we're learning more about the disturbing plot the feds thwarted last week, the feds say the man spent a year plotting the attack and prosecutors say he went to west virginia and detonated a test bomb there and also allegedly went to baltimore to meet with someone he thought was in al qaeda and the person was actually an undercover fbi agent. unlucky for him, his former landlord said he knew something was not right about the guy and told police about him two years ago and we spoke to the landlord this morning. >> i accused him of making bombs, because i thought that he fit the profile. and i said i didn't know but i suspect he's doing something illegally, and so the police went into investigate. >> bail hearing set for wednesday.

the captain of the costa concordia, was he high on cocaine when the ship ran aground last month? a question survivors and others are asking after an anomaly popped up in his drug test results and a hair from him tested positive for cocaine but at the time of the accident there were no drugs actually present in his system. so, now lawyers for some of the passengers are asking italian officials to go ahead and retest those samples, just to make sure. as you recall, 32 people were killed in that disaster, including two americans. they say you cannot hurry love. it turns you -- turns out you can't predict it, either. a new study shows algorithms used by on-line dating sites don't work. that is the study -- what the study says, talking about the list of characteristics they use to determine compatibility and the study says the criteria isn't enough to predict everlasting love. the study also notes, on-line profile photos give people a

now, step out of the shot and you get the full view, that, of course, st. peter's basilica and the basilica of the holy father and is where archbishop dolan became cardinal dolan of new york as well as 21 others. what is amazing, i think, about this experience, over a thousand from new york as well as many others from other parts of the country came to witness who is no doubt a major step for the catholic church, i would say christians and all americans, and that is a man named timothy dolan from st. louis, missouri, from wisconsin and now new york has taken on a position of leadership in the way that has not been seen in recent times. not only taking leadership, and a passionate role among catholics, the ethics for the church of the united states of america, no matter what denomination you are. >> dave: what responsibility comes with being a cardinal? >> that's a great question,

dave, because archbishop, now cardinal dolan said it's not about honor, it's not a triumphant moment, no. this is a -- exactly what you said, dave, responsibilities. he's going back to a local church where he'll be pastor, where schools will have to be closed and churches will have to be closed, people are coming out of a real detachment from the church in a lot of ways even with the sex abuse scandal and he's coming back, saying i'm not going to impose the faith, but am welcoming you home, see what a learned and have found. a challenge, no doubt. >> on the front page of the "new york post" it says, when he was asked, what is the first thing he's going to do? go get a beer! you know, what did the rest of the cardinals, getting a sense of the rest of the church what they think about him, you know, the other cardinals there, look

at him with wide-eyed and curiously? >> that's right. you know, it is a great question, juliett. he said i'll get a beer as you said. and also said, i will have a glass of grapa, a strong drink before talking to the pope and the other cardinals. he was selected, before he was cardinal, the day before he became cardinal to be a spokesman among all the cardinals and giving a talk about what is called the new evangelization, what the pope is calling it, how to bring the same old message of jesus christ in a society with new challenges, but, also, new opportunities. like you said, the other cardinals are probably looking like, this is not the kind of guy we're used to. talking about going to get a beer and is joking around, no doubt, but does it with great intention and that is, he wants to show people, that he is just a guy like everybody else. and, that is who he is, and, so, yes, he jokes around, always has a line for the press and behind

the joking comes very strong ideas. as we saw, recently in the whole debate, for example, with the health and human serviceman date, he is willing to steak on tough issues, we'll see if he's able to do that in a way that is also welcoming to people who have been outside the faith for so long, it's an exciting time. we could call it, perhaps, a new spring for the vatican. a new spring for catholics in the church. we'll see if it turns out to be such a positive thing as it looks to be, right now. >> dave: whether it is he or new cardinal o'brien from baltimore, why is humility so important? he says i don't want this to go to my head, says the cardinal dolan, literally. >> yeah, you know. absolutely. he said before giving a talk he felt like he was walking around with a bowling ball on top of his head. the weight, and he's able to communicate in vivid images but he said i don't want it to go to my head. i want to make sure that, you know, what, whether a cardinal in red, a priest in black or a

posted i asked her, of course. but... >> clayton: so, janice, noah comes to you and says, by the way, i created a web site, when i was 12 years old, i played in the dirt in the backyard, creates a web site and wants to raise money for you. what did you say to him? >> he created the web site two years ago and had done other projects on smaller scale and scheduled he wanted to put it on and i asked if he was sure and talked to his apparently and we had several discussions because we didn't want to make it looks like we're using the child and he insisted on doing it and his parents and myself and his uncle we looked out to make sure that he was not exploited, that things went smooth and that he could handle it. >> clayton: were you shocked, when suddenly the checks started coming in? were you shocked? >> oh, yes, very shocked. and i told him not to be disappointed if he didn't make it. because that was a big job, and he was doing his best.

and he made it! >> clayton: noah, when you put it out there, did you have any idea what was about to happen? >> no, i didn't. i assumed that he would get some donation but never dreamt there were that many wonderful people out there. our family, friends, community, everyone, just pulled together, and he got checks from out of state, even, but, the majority came from our own community. >> clayton: what did you think when the checks started coming in? >> i was -- i knew there was going to be some, but i was shocked that this many came in, how big amounts some of them were. >> clayton: remarkable, $10,000 came in per month and you managed to stave off foreclosure and kept your home, janice, we are grateful for you joining us and, congratulations and having a wonderful grandson, noah, thanks for taking the initiative. you are an incredible american. >> thanks for having us. >> clayton: more "fox & friends" in two minutes. business you are in,
