number two, right now this president is permitting oil exploration and development of oil shale and natural gas production is at an all in time high. we are at the peak of production for the last 10 years right now. we are consuming less than we have ever consumed because of president obama's insistence we increase the gas mileage and every vehicle produced in this country and used in this country. this is a policy, begin the has taken three years to get over the bush economy and we are just coming out of it. it will take a while to get over the bush energy policies. brad, you want to take credit for this in the problem with that is many of the forces driving these prices up are because of libya and what's going on in iran, and what's going on beyond our borders. megyn: let him respond. >> we'll be energy dependent in 10 years. >> that's nonsense.

this president is a reactionary president. he doesn't lead on energy, he reacted to his base and his base says the pipeline is no good. let me correct you on something. 20 years ago or more we were producing 9 million barrels a day. today we produce 6 million. has our dependency gone down? no, it has increased. this concept that we are better after today than when were a few short years ago is false. this president in pandering to his base has hurt our dependency on foreign oil and that's why we are seeing spikes in oil. you can blame it on iran and the arab spring but in the end it's our own fault. we have the resources necessary, the problem is we don't have a president with the vision and determination to make his rhetoric match. megyn: the keystone oil pipeline

is something americans can understand if they have been following and know that's something the president said no to. in terms of what's happening at the pump right now r. we are seeing record gas prices. prices have never been this high not of february. they ask themselves why. if they see what's happening with iran. then they seat rejection of an oil pipeline thee were told would reduce our dependence and foreign oil. do you think that will come back to haunt the president politically? >> he hasn't said no to key stone, he said no to the route that's been pick. they are look at an alternative route. the reason he said no to the route that was picked because it would go through an area where a water table and drains into the mississippi. if it were to break, the highest for acidic oil product that has ever been produced would dispoil

the water table. why don't people understand you don't run the risk of ruining what is our biggest export, agriculture, and what we can't eat, you can't live, you can't drink, you can't live. why can't we run it a few hundred mile to the the west which is what is being proposed now. megyn: i want to ask you about president obama's take on oil and energy and we put together just a sampling of his position on this. i want to get your reaction. >> for decades washington has failed the american people on energy. and that has led directly to the current crisis. george bush's approach was to let the oil companies write his energy policy. we cannot afford for more years

of an energy policy dictated by the oil companies. megyn: sheer terror for a dozen expert skiers in washington state after an avalanche send them plunging 3,000 feet.

three skiers died, one survived thanks to an emergency airbag. >> at one point after the avalanche they are all buried in snow. necessity managed to disthemselves out of the snow. at that point they realized three of them are in distress. they begin cpr. at the same point they are calling 911 to try to get help to them. megyn: joining me by phone is survival expert ross mcfadden. you are an expert on this type of thing and you know why the fourth of those four skiers survived. what was it? >> that would be -- hi, i'm glad to be on -- the air because what saved her life is what i would say. it created enough space in the snow to enable her to breathe. if i * this is file video of the

airbag we are talking about. it looks like a giant pillow you put around your neckn on an airplane. >> it creates enough space for you to be able to breathe. imagine, it would be like pack your chest full of snow with enough weight to make it so you cannot breathe, plus having all the snow in your face which becomes very compact. people don't realize when the snow is moving it creates friction and the edges of the snow begin to melt. when it comes to a stop, the snow will actually begin to freeze back in place. it's almost like concrete. it's hard and difficult to move in and compressing your chest making it impossible to breathe. megyn: we have video of another incident where they were digging the guy out. an got crushed.

you could see this friend going in a panic. the guy couldn't move. his head was buried by the snow. just the way you are talking about. if you don't have the airbag is there any way of surviving this without a team ready and standing there to dig you out? >> unfortunately the answer is no unless you are just lucky enough to get a little bit of snow on you, not too much snow. other than that your chances are slim. megyn: they say this avalanche was triggered by one of the skiers who died. they say it was 30 feet wide and three feet deep. one of the skiers managed to grab ahold of a tree and avoid being taken by the avalanche. what is the feeling when it's too late for you, you have caught tonight and you are tumbling down the mountain.

>> i can't speak to the feeling on that, i'm sure it would be sheer panic because you are getting tumbled around and tossed around like a rag doll. three foot of snow or even more on top of you and instantly causes you to not be able to breathe. if you let all the air out of your body and imagine you cannot breathe in because your chest is compressed and it won't allow your hungs to expand. besides the fact that the snow is in your face and you are in ice. megyn: this is file footage, we don't have video of the incident that happened sunday when these three men were killed. but what they were doing is skiing off the main trail, and there was a warning. we saw the officials say we rated the avalanche danger as high. they knew this was kree curious. they were off trails and they

assumed the risk. they did assume the risk here. >> yes, they did. you are exactly right. when you go off the resort where they are taking care of those problems for you. then you are basically taking your own life in your hand. so everything that you can do to prepare yourself is what i would definitely do and i was telling one of the focus was talking to earlier about the 7 keys that i learned in the military, and i'm sure a lot of folks know what that is. basically proper preparation, prevent piss-poor performance. if you are not properly prepared to do something like that you will have malfunctions. you are taking your life into your own hands. megyn: it's good to remember. these were expert skiers. thank you. the nypd drawing heat for the way it has reportedly been

megyn: there is a growing controversy over reports on the extent to which the nypd has been monitoring muslim college students not just in new york city but for hundreds of miles around. jamie colby live in our newsroom. >> reporter: monitorring students belong to muslim student organizations to schools that did extend beyond new york city limits. the groups are claiming the nypd

violated privacy rights. but the goal was to learn more about what these muslim groups including yale, columbia, university of pennsylvania and city college of new york were doing beyond praying and socializing, including the use of undercover agents, recording the names of student pleased to be suspect, but who fell short of committing immediate wrongdoing. anwar al-awlaki was president of a student organization. the nypd deemed it prudent to get a better handle on what was occurring at msa. plus tim student organizations were tracked by investigators by some of the members including its syracuse.

so it's an ideal political time for them to do it, particularly with the political situation in the united states. megyn: there is more and more talk suggesting that is their plan. question on the minds of americans now is what will we do, will we get actively involved in will we quietly help? bill cowan, how should we be viewing our potential role in an attack by israel on iran? >> first and foremost there is no question whether we play any part or not we'll be blamed for it. so let's step up to the table and make sure our allies in israel don't suffer some disastrous defeat when they do this. there are things we can do that don't require us to engage the iranians directly. refueling, helping get clearance for overflight, helping with the rescue and recovery of down pilots whose aircraft d g down

id warfare, intelligence we can provide. a whole range of things we can do that don't show an active visible presence. megyn: general m iny you, too, believe iran will retaliate against the united states if israel strikes iran but you think they will do it priew proxies and not directly. >> they do not want the united states to be involved. if they close the straits of hormuz the united states has to become involved to keep the shipping lanes open. so their attacks against u.s. forces will come through proxies. and they will try to have no fingerprints back to iran. we should put out a warning right now, any of those that do it covertly. any attacks against u.s. forces we'll assume it's iran. i strongly endorse what colonel cowan said, the kind of support

we should be giving them, but i don't believer we are doing that right now. megyn: would we be repaired, say israel attacks iran, iran starts retaliating against u.s. targets abroad. either directly or through proxies. do you think there is the political will in this country and at the administration level to go after iran over something that is not a clear and direct attack by iran on america? >> i don't think this administration has the political will. i think there are those in the pentagon who don't have the political will to do what needs to be done. in addition to what strike we may see over the region, i think we should expect to see things happening inside this country. hezbollah operatives are in this country waiting to be called upon. law enforcement would do the things they had to do to stop

attacks, i just don't believe this administration is willing to stand up and put out what we need to do in order to retaliate against things done against us. i don't think general mcinerney or anybody in the military wants to go to war. but by the same token are we willing to stand up and be slapped around once more about it iranians as we have so many times in the past. megyn: we all know ahmadinejad appears to be a lunatic. but is he so crazy he would let off a nuclear bomb on israel if he gets the nuke or that he would go after the united states in any way that would essentially force or at least invite an american retaliation against iran? is he that nuts? >> he's not nuts. it's the ideology that he believes in. he firmly believes that the madi
