new evidence that gas prices are getting to be a big issue in this presidential election for both the gop and the white house. welcome to "america live," everyone, i'm megyn kelly. look at this. exit l polls from six super tuesday states show concerns over gas prices are getting more significant. in massachusetts a whopping 70% say the price of gas is important to them. that goes all the way up to 83% in georgia where voters overwhelmingly chose newt gingrich as their preferred republican nominee. and here's a key part of his speech last night. >> the president said we have to be practical, drilling won't solve it. and then he offered his practical solution. does anybody here remember what it was? algae. [laughter] algae. i mean, i think this summer as gas prices keep going up one of our campaign techniques should
1:01 pm
be have people go to gas stations with a jar of algae. [laughter] and say to people would you rather have the gingrich solution of drilling and having more oil, or would you like to try to put this in your gas tank? [laughter] megyn: matt mccall is president of penn financial group and chris stirewalt is host of power play on foxnews.com. let me start with you on what we saw last night, chris, in terms of the exit polls. it seems clear that like it or not this is an issue for voters, and this could drive the polls come november. >> oh, my gosh, yes. look, it's the most real, it's the most tangible experience that people have when you have inflation, when you have the economy struggling and you have high gas prices, they feel it. the difference between filling up your tank for $50 or $60 is something every voter can feel. and look at where the president is today. he's down in north carolina campaign anything a state that -- campaigning in a state that he wants to win again.
1:02 pm
if i look at these exit l polls in southern states, i'm not liking where that's going, and i'm not liking having newt gingrich make fun of my algae. megyn: it was no accident, matt, that newt gingrich got out there when the cameras were on him. you've got millions of people watching, that's your opportunity to get your message across unlike any other besides the debates, that he chose to focus on gas prices and going after the president on that. the question is how the president can respond and what can he do, matt? he keeps telling us there's no silver bullet. >> well, the thing is between now and election, megyn, there's nothing the president can do in my mind. gas prices are on a one-way trip here, higher, and i think they're going to keep going especially into the summer season as the election heats up. i think the only thing the president can do to save himself right now is keep going after the drill, say he's going to start drilling here in the united states, start relying on fossil fuel coming out of our country.
1:03 pm
the problem is then he has the green party on the other side, basically, pushing him back. so i don't think he has any shot to save himself when it comes to high gas. and i think chris makes a fantastic point. when it comes to gas prices, it's real. it's something that everybody can feel. even if it only cost you $30 extra a month to fill your tank, you can feel that. you don't care about any of the numbers, you care about the fact that gas prices are going higher almost every single day. megyn: chris, whether it's republican or democrat in the white house, the american voters hold it against the president when the gas prices go up like that. it seems to be in this administration folks have started the narrative that president obama wants gas prices to go up in part because of who he appointed as his energy secretary, steven chu, who suggested that he wanted that because it would help get people off of foreign oil. ed henry asked president obama about that yesterday at the press conference, and the president said what kind of sane president in a re-election year would want gas prices to go up?
1:04 pm
newt gingrich took a shot at that last night as well. listen here. >> now, i want you to imagine the debate this fall. the president was right the other day. he's so nervous about gasoline prices and energy that he's done two major speeches. and i thought today in one of the most shallow and self-serving comments by a president that i've heard in a long time he was candid in his press conference. he said, you know, i'm really worried about higher gas prices because it will make it harder for me to get reelected. i did not make this up. it was just nice to know that the president once again has managed to take the pain of the american people and turn it into his own o personal problem. [laughter] megyn: effective? >> yes. and also, you know, you mentioned steven chu, you mentioned ed's question. steven chu's going to be a bellwether for where obama is on
1:05 pm
requests -- gas prices. if he is still the energy secretary he of even more expensive gasoline fame, if steven chu's still the energy secretary on election day, they're probably feeling pretty confident about it. but i would not be picking out any new draperies or decorations for my office. megyn: matt, last question to you. anything that can be done short term, president obama brings you in and says, matt, i've got a few months until november, what would you recommend i do to drive the prices down? immediately? >> unfortunately, there's nothing. you have the tensions in the middle east. you can't put the moratorium in the gulf of hex coe, you can't -- mexico, you can't bring that back online and start drilling. the only thing he can try to do is get confidence back into the american people by saying, listen, it's okay, we can survive with $4 a gallon gasoline. i'm actually kind of happy,
1:06 pm
because he's stuck. i think there's nothing he can do to fix it at this point. megyn: well, i think you may be the only one who's happy. >> so the energy policy changes, that's why i'm happy. megyn: matt and chris, thank you both so much. >> you bet. megyn: well, rick santorum's supporters have a message for newt gingrich: get out! they're pressuring the former speaker to quit the presidential race arguing he's preventing a fair fight between rick santorum and mitt romney. you may recall gingrich had a similar message for santorum right before the south carolina primary. he's been telling him to get out for a while. but after a big win in georgia, it looks like gingrich is in it for the long haul. you can find out more on that by going to foxnews.com. well, we're also keeping a close eye on the united nations today. the united states is working with five other world powers to set the stage for new nuclear talks with iran. the diplomats hoping to take a unified stance on the iranian nuclear program. in a joint statement to the
1:07 pm
international atomic energy agency tomorrow. the group includes russia and china which both blocked a previous attempt at a resolution addressing fears of iran building nuclear weapons. of course, things have changed since then with israel significantly ramping up its rhetoric about what it's going to do in response to iran's program. what does all of this mean for israel, these new talks? coming up this hour i will speak with dory gold, a former israeli ambassador to the u.n. and former foreign policy adviser to prime minister benjamin netanyahu. and speaking of iran, just a couple of hours ago the white house press secretary echoed the president's attack on what president obama called those people who are beating the drums of war. mr. obama yesterday called out gop candidates for criticizing his iran policy suggesting they were being far too casual about the matter. so we put those questions today to a bipart saab group -- bipartisan group of voters just moments before the show began. as a gop voter, your reaction to
1:08 pm
hearing the president -- >> this is bizarre. this man unilaterally decided to send our troops and nato into libya without a worth of assent from anybody in the united states congress including members of his own party, and he now stands there and lectures gop candidates about war? this is the same man who on sunday said to netanyahu, i have your back, who is now a day later walking back everything he said to aipac over the weekend. i don't get it. megyn: well, trust me, that response was just the start of a fierce debate. this particular focus group got a little bit more heated than we have seen in if recent weeks, and you will see it all in our next hour. well, america's top brass warning syria the u.s. military is ready and able to end the assad regime's massacre of its own citizens. but the chairman of the joint chiefs, martin dempsey, warned the senate armed services committee about the dangers of
1:09 pm
outside extremists and the possibility of syrian forces using chemical and biological weapons. the united nations estimates that more than 7500 syrians have died in the government's crackdown this past year. panetta left open the possibility of u.s. military involvement but argued that the u.s. should keep its focus on isolating the syrian government diplomatically. fox news alert now on a big, new twist to a story we've been following here for weeks. some of the american democracy workers who were virtually held hostage in egypt for weeks are now meeting with i -- lawmakers on capitol hill as we get new reports on why they were taken and now the possible fallout for egypt. trace gallagher's here with more. >> reporter: these american ngos or nongovernmental organizations are meeting with lawmakers because they're concerned about what's going on inside egypt despite the arab spring pushing out hosni mubarak. they're saying egypt is a long way from democracy, and an
1:10 pm
anti-american sentiment is rising. the american ngos were released last week after a $5 million bail was paid. the ngos paid it, but the money came from the u.s. government. there is still, they believe, one american in egypt, and they're very concerned about the safety of their egyptian colleagues who worked with them who cannot leave the country. and one of the ngos tells our chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge that while the americans in egypt were demonstrating, they were actually calling for their heads, and they wanted to swap the americans for one of the most notorious terrorists held in u.s. custody, otherwise known as the blind sheikh. he was convicted in 1993 of bombing the world trade center that killed six people. keep in mind the united states still gives egypt more than a billion dollars a year in aid as part of a peace treaty that egypt signed with israel. and now there is word that some of those lawmakers who are meeting with these ngos today
1:11 pm
would like to withhold that aid until relations improve. the ngos, we should note, are still facing charges. they are supposed to go back to egypt. they say they are still plotting their next move, megyn. megyn: wow. trace, thank you. well, the family research council has uncovered some new federal rules that mean some illegal immigrants in federal custody are getting medical services even some americans cannot get on the taxpayers' time. tony perkins joins us next on what is being given to these folks and why. plus, democrats launching a petition to stop a so-called republican war on women. now the winner of a very famous battle of the sexes is weighing in on this. we'll show you who it is and what side this person is on. and it tugged at the heartstrings of so many of our viewers, a dad fighting back tears as he talked about his son's struggle for veterans' benefits after a devastating injury in afghanistan. now a can't-miss follow up to

megyn: fox news alert on a story we have been working to confirm this morning. it turns out that there are new federal rules on health care in place right now at the immigration and customs enforcement agency, i.c.e. as you may know it, rules that mean people arrested for entering this country illegally may soon be entitled to free abortions and transgender hormone treatments with u.s. taxpayers picking up the tab. tony perkins is the president of the family research council. his organization was one of the first to stumble on to this and, tony, it appears that you have stumbled on to an actual issue because the immigration and customs enforcement department
1:16 pm
just provided us with a statement confirming, this essence, the nature of your report but offering a justification for why they do this. exactly what are they paying or for and why? >> well, i.c.e., immigrations and customs enforcement, has said when they're holding a detainee that is here illegally, that they're afforded pregnancy care which would include abortions which, obviously, is something taxpayers would have to fund. it's outside the hyde amendment, so there's no restrictions on it. and then they would also provide hormone treatment for those undergoing gender transformation. and so, i mean, what this is really, i mean, this is a bad, radical social policy, you know, cross-dressing as health care because this is really a trial balloon, megyn. if they can get by with this under i.c.e. for illegal immigrants, t going to be a part of the -- it's going to be a part of the obamacare. as we saw the mandate that just came down on contraception, this
1:17 pm
will be another mandate that will be included in obamacare because hhs can write the rules, and they're going to see how far they can push this. megyn: we did a story last week about how military veterans are having their benefits cut to save money, they're going to have their health care costs go up, but if you are an illegal immigrant and you need an abortion at least in the case of rape, incest or in order to save the life of the mother they say, the taxpayers are going to fund that. even though you're not an american citizen, and you've broken our laws to get into the country. >> exactly. i used to work in law enforcement, my first assignment was a prison, and you have to provide basic health care. that's only the humane thing to do. medicines for blood pressure and making sure people are not dying from diseases. you give them basic treatment while they're there. this is elective treatment. this goes beyond what's essential to keep someone healthy and alive. again, remember, these are folks who came into this country illegally. they're being held into they're
1:18 pm
deported, and we're giving them services, as you mentioned, that veterans are not even being given the basics in health care treatment. we're giving that money into radical social policy like this which is not, shouldn't be surprising from this administration. megyn: but in defense of the administration, what are they supposed to do? if they have an illegal immigrant in custody and she, she is, she needs an abortion to save her life -- >> well, if that's the case -- it's the terminology here. you never need an abortion to save the life of a mother. megyn: never? >> the mother is the primary patient. megyn: right. >> if you're working to save the life of the mother and the child dies, that's not ab aworse. so -- abortion. so we're not talking about -- megyn: what about cases of rape, that they're saying that's a justifiable time when they would use taxpayer dollars. they say elective abortions they can get, but they're not going to pay for those with taxpayer dough, but rape, incest --
1:19 pm
>> you talk about the issue of rape, that's such a small percentage of pregnancies. plus, how do you verify that that, in fact, is the case? that it's a case of rape? again, this comes down to government funds being used to advance radical social policy that is masquerading as health care. megyn: they say on the transgender issue i.c.e., like the bureau of prisons, allows detainees who are already receiving hormone therapy to continue that therapy. there is, apparently, a medical belief that if you are undergoing the hormone therapy to transition from male to female, they stop it right in the middle, that that could be potentially dangerous and then i.c.e. would get, would be forced to pay for the, you know, medical bills that are associated with this reaction. >> it's about a $20,000 process to undergo that. but here's the question, megyn. the taxpayers want to be funding that? you could list any number of areas of your life that are going to be impacted if you're taken into custody for being
1:20 pm
someplace illegally. your children are going to be impacted, your job. are we responsible for that as the citizens of this country, to pay to mitigate the damages that people have because they make bad decisions? i don't think so. megyn: i.c.e. seems to be saying yes because they say our policy on these issues is in line with the policy of the department of justice and the bureau of prisons which applies to criminals serving their federal sentences. this is what you do when you take somebody into custody, illegal or american citizen. >> two points. one, these are rules adopted without congressional authority, these are internal rules by the entity itself. i. c.e. has adopted these. we're talking about nonamericans, people who have entered into this country illegally. and in many cases being afforded more costly health care than the basic health care that's been given to americans who have served their country honorably. there's a problem with that, and i think voters have a right to know, and i think congress should be looking into why these rules have been adopted and can changing them. we need to protect americans.
1:21 pm
at a time when we have a $15 trillion debt, do we need to be paying for people to undergo hormone therapy or paying for abortions from illegal aliens? megyn: some in congress are already raising questions, lamar smith of texas, republican, has said the administration's new detention manual is more like a hospitality guideline for illegal immigrants. we'll see whether they do more with that. tony perkins, thank you, sir. >> good to be with you, megyn. megyn: it takes a lot to shock new yorkers, but this came close. a soccer mom with four kids accused of running a call girl ring that was charging up to $25,000 to score a date for the weekend. trace is on the story of who was possibly protecting this woman. and up next, the story of a mom who sets the bar so high, she's an example for all of us. stephanie decker tells us about how she nearly lost her life trying to protect her children when the twister hit. >> i saw a brick coming at my daughter's direction, so i would maneuver my back left and

that almost cost her her life as she was trying to protect her children from a tornado last week. and in her first interview, she says she has no regrets. none. trace is here with more about this incredible woman. trace? >> reporter: this is a great story. 30-year-old stephanie decker actually went to pick up her kids early fro school, they're 8 and 5 years old, because she knew the storm was coming, and she went right home. they went right to the basement. a window broke out, and the entire house started shifting. she then made a split second decision, she wrapped her kids in a blanket and put herself on top of them. listen. >> the pillars, the steel beams, the bricks, everything from the house was hitting me in the back. i remember having a steel beam fall right on my leg. dominic would say, mommy, i need you to save me. >> reporter: she knew at that
1:27 pm
point that her legs were bleeding very badly, but she was still trying to stop the bricks and the debris from hitting her kids. she says she kept praying and kept telling herself to keep fighting. listen. >> i sat there and talked to myself out loud and say, all right, we can do this. we can do this, you know, we can make it. you know, i've got to live for my kids. the next moment i was, i can't do this anymore, i can't stay awake, i'm tired, you know? i just want to close my eyes. >> reporter: she said she couldn't do it anymore, she even took out a cell phone and started videotaping for her husband and her kids. that's when a neighbor walked in, found her, ran down, grabbed a police who used a tourniquet to stop the bleeding on her legs. she lost one leg below the knee, the other one just above the ankle. her children, megyn, not a scratch on either one of them. and you saw the house and the debris which is in itself an amazing part of the story. megyn: it's unbelievable. you know, it's like you see
1:28 pm
people like that, and it just restores your faith in humanity. you know? i think most parents would die to protect their children, but it's one thing to say it, and it's another thing to see a woman actually willing to do it and to lose her legs to protect her young ones. oh, god bless her and the entire family. trace, thank you. >> reporter: yeah, okay. megyn: right? i mean, it's a sad story, but it's an inspirational story just about the resolve and the bond between a parent and a child and the courage. well, democrats have now raised more than a million dollars on a web site recruiting donors to, quote, fight the gop war on women. but is there really a war, or is this just fund raising on women? we'll survey the so-called battlefield and debate it next. plus, six world leaders now joining forces to tackle the growing nuclear threat out of iran. but just yesterday ambassador bolton pointed out a new warning from the secretary of defense saying that stalled talks only give iran extra time to cross

the nuclear finish line. coming up, we will ask a former israeli ambassador to the united nations what he thinks about this latest move from washington. plus, a hockey dad decides to use a lazier is pointer -- laser pointer to distract the opposing goalie at his daughter's game. okay. what he did was definitely wrong, but does that mean he should go to jail? kelly's court takes up that case. >> i saw this on the news last night, that it happened, and i said it's just, it's not right. it's way out of line. towards the end of the game my goalie complained there was some light being shined in her eyes. megyn: welcome back. 1:33 here in the east. mitt romney officially declared the winner of the alaska caucuses. that may have happened after you went to bed. bringing that candidate's number of super tuesday victories to six. governor romney racked up the majority of delegates yesterday, but critics say he's still struggling to win over the very conservative voters. the indiana colts giving long-time star quarterback peyton manning his walking papers, making the 35-year-old now a free agent. the team says they decided to cut manning loose rather than pay him a $28 million bonus. and lawmakers in utah approving a bill requiring all public school students to recite the pledge of allegiance daily. the new bill expands an earlier law requiring elementary students to recite the pledge every day and high school students once a week. it now heads to the governor's office for approval.

well, it's been almost 40 years since billie jean king famously won the battle of the sexes, defeating male tennis player bobby riggs in a nationally-televised match back in 1973. but now the tennis legend is part of a new fight against republicans. king is lending her star power to a democratic campaign that accuses republicans of waging a war on women's rights. in an e-mail she's encouraging people to go online and stop the republican war on women. that's how she puts it, to sign that petition. but is there really a war on women, or is this a case of fundraising on women? monica crowley, sally cohn are fox news contributors. you're a relin and a woman, are you waging war on yourself? [laughter] >> i am not, nor is the republican party -- megyn: do republicans hate women? >> this is the theme now coming out of the left.
1:35 pm
and, look, it's understandable because the left has really, the democrat party has hemorrhaged a lot of women since 2008. the 2010 election cycle we saw a lot of women leaf the democrats -- leave the democrats, vote for the republican party, so this is their attempt to try to get women back, and this is why the whole contraception issue came up, team obama dropped this like a grenade into the middle of the election campaign. remember, megyn, they had a year and a half, obamacare was passed a year and a half ago, to figure out how they were going to deal with these kinds of issues. so the reason they dropped it into the race at this particular moment was to get everybody, all the republican presidential candidates, all of the hearn people, all the media chasing after the story or like lemmings off a cliff, and we all fell for it, and here we are talking about it once again. birth control, contraception, nobody cares about. megyn: i don't know about that one. go ahead. >> look, i completely and totally disagree with you as a woman. you know, look the issue in 28
1:36 pm
states they'd already had a mandate like this that was stronger, and republicans didn't make a whisper of a problem about it until, ooh, all of a sudden it's election year, all -- [inaudible conversations] but the point, monica, it's an election year, and republicans keep wanting to hammer it not because of the issue itself -- excuse me, it was republicans who introduced the blunt amendment saying that any employer of any kind who has any religious objection to any kind of health issue, including women's health issues, can raise a finger -- [inaudible conversations] megyn: sally, you know, president obama he's going to bring us all together, hope and change, unifying force. there's a war on women! the republicans hate women! >> we hate them. >> first of all, it is really hard to unite when you're working with a party that says no to absolutely everything including tax increases they once favored. but that aside, there's no question here this is an election year, and all the polls say that, you know, 25% of the voters which is the republican base think there's not a war on
1:37 pm
women, and the 25% which is the democratic base thinks there is. it's clearly part of firing up your base, i get it. when you have republicans and conservatives call women who want to exercise their first amendment rights sluts, i think -- megyn: do we have to go there? >> i'm just saying. megyn: ed schultz? >> i'm not talking about them -- megyn: it's not just republicans. >> i think what we really should be focusing on is the middle of the country, that 50% of independent seaters. overwhelmingly -- voters. overwhelmingly they think the republicans are in a war with everyone. actively sabotaging the u.s. chi. >> oh, come on. megyn: you disagree. i want to ask you this because you talked about how you think women have been turning on the democrats since 2008. we have a poll looking at president obama's approval rating with men. not with women. since the start of the year through march 4, 2012, barack
1:38 pm
obama's overall approval rating has averaged 45%. trust me on this, this is according to our brain room, the gallup weekly tracker. his approval among men has averaged 41.7, so he is tracking lower with the men than he is with the women. does that suggest to you that democrats understand he needs to get women on the democratic side motivated and out to the polls? >> absolutely. look, he's had for a while, he's had a pretty serious problem with the base and, yes, that does include women. this whole thing was orchestrated to get everybody off of the main subject of this election which is unemployment and the state of the u.s. economy. so while everybody is over here talking about contraception which nobody cares about, we're not talking about the issues that, yes, do affect men, do affect women -- >> wow. >> and that's exactly -- megyn: before you respond, and i'm going to give you the floor, ann romney suggested something like this last night. she didn't quite make the comparison -- do we have that
1:39 pm
sound bite, you guys? no. we don't have ann romney. [laughter] okay. i'm going to introduce anyone, and i don't want anyone to interrupt me. [laughter] okay, no, ann romney went out there last night, and she said this it was the first time we heard about what women want, and she said what women care about is the economy, they care about the debt, the entitlements, that's what she said. go ahead, sally. >> i'm going to flatly reject the idea that this is what democrats want to be talking about. the truth is the economy is getting better, talk to any republican strategist off camera, obama's approval ratings are getting better, they're still highly likable and, oh, yeah, you can't beat somebody with nobody, and the republicans have yet to find a nominee that they all can agree that they like. so santorum ran on -- this is, the democrats didn't invent this war on women, and republicans like santorum have been drumming up this social conservativism, and so they're the ones who wanted -- [inaudible conversations]
1:40 pm
megyn: gotta go. >> nobody was talking about this until team obama dropped the hhs mandate on catholic universities, and they did that quite deliberately so that everybody would be talking about that. megyn: do you feel like we should have done this segment with little pink combat helmets? [laughter] >> next week. megyn: all right. thank you both so much. a pleasure as always. well, president obama making some bold claims in his first formal news conference of the year about syria, taxes, drilling for oil. it was the first big time he went before the press corps. as i say, in a year. now our fact checkers are telling us whether all those claims add up. and serious new warnings that iran is on the verge of building a nuclear bomb. yesterday on this program you heard there the former u.s. ambassador to the u.n., and now we get reaction from the former israeli ambassador to that world body. >> the prospect of returning to the negotiation table gives iran the opportunity, which it has utilized to great advantage before, to drag out negotiations, to give it that
