word is going to be twice as long. >> i didn't have your number. you don't give me your number because of problems in the past. cops won't let me have it. >> voters have spoken and they say the true conservative is rick santorum. the presidential hopeful winning big and making sure mitt romney hears him loud and clear. >> for someone who thinks this race is inevitable, he spent a whole lot of money against me for being inevitable. >> the republican race, we're still in it. >> and newt gingrich promises to keep going and has a message for mitt romney! >> if you're the frontrunner and you keep coming in third, you're not much of a frontrunner. >> a whole breakdown of the results just seconds away. brian? >> and he's hung in. he's hung this american flag outside the auto shop for more than 30 years. now, the city says he needs to take it down or go to jail.
6:01 am
>> what? >> "fox & friends" starts right now. >> we should have made that scramble word mississippi combined with alabama. those two big primaries last night and here is a look at the results. could be labelled a stunning victory for rick santorum because he was not ahead in any of the recent polls in either of those states but he walks away the winner in both of them. >> and the one who didn't win probably has the most pressure to drop out. could it be newt gingrich and of course in alabama where many people thought newt was the favorite to win and romney was gaining it was santorum, 35, 29 and 29. ron paul didn't try. >> and we should point out, though, although santorum won both mississippi and alabama, big, that's a big win for him.

we get that. but the delegate count really didn't change that much. mitt romney still has a substantial lead in delegates. >> it's not winner take all. >> no, they're proportional, mississippi and alabama. guys, i don't know what hawaii is. there's 17 delegates that going to be -- i believe that's proportional as well. >> 86% of the votes have been counted and 45% go to mitt and 25% go to rick to 19 to newt. >> of all the delegates counted from last night, mitt romney still won the delegate count. >> it is. is this a mathematical race or is this perception? i mean, come on. if you are in the mitt romney camp this morning, you're not celebrating. i mean, this is about the split in the party. the conservative voice of the party is saying not so fast and they are waiting for their voices to be heard or they waited through last night. and they picked rick santorum. i think this election right now is about perception, not necessarily math.
6:03 am
>> and by the way, the delegate count is essentially 476 mitt. 246 rick. and 131 newt gingrich, ron paul has yet to break into three digits. >> can i point out, by no means am i saying it's a done deal and i'm not in the tank like a lot of people said yesterday for mitt romney. i'm simply saying, yes, there's going to be a lot of talk about rick santorum winning mississippi and alabama but when you do the numbers, mitt romney did very well in races that he probably shouldn't have done that well in. he's not considered the conservative. >> that doesn't matter. >> i think it does. he's going to end up with more delegates. >> back to my original point. it's a question for the viewers. is this about math or about perception? were you -- do you think it's important that your voice was heard if it was a differing voice? there's a lot of questions this morning. i think one of the interesting things coming out of the polls, though, is rick santorum did well with the independents and

the prevailing thought process in this election has been the inevitable nominee who can beat barack obama. >> we both know -- >> we also know all these states and even barack obama are going to any republican who gets the nomination. here is two that he expected to win last night and did walk away with delegates. rick santorum, newt gingrich and then mitt romney. >> people have said you're being outspent and, you know, everybody is talking about all the math and all the things that this race is inevitable. well, for someone who thinks this race is inevitable, he spent a whole lot of money against me for being inevitable. this is a grassroots campaign for president. who would have ever thought in the age of media that we have in this country today that ordinary folks from across this country can defy the odds day in and day out. >> the elite media's effort to
6:05 am
convince the nation that mitt romney is inevitable just collapsed. the fact is in both states, the conservative candidates got nearly 70% of the vote and if you're the frontrunner, if you're the frontrunner and you keep coming in third, you're not much of a frontrunner. >> i think with that statement, newt gingrich has unveiled his new strategy and that is stop mitt romney, among anything else, before anything else, from getting the 1,140 votes. >> that would be the gingrich strategy. santorum's strategy should be convincing more voters that he can beat president obama. romney's strategy should be that he needs to convince the loyal amongst the g.o.p. base. i mean, to me, those are the three things that come out for these three candidates this morning as they look ahead. >> there's plenty of talk of why mitt romney has been unable to deliver a knockout punch to rick santorum in the primaries. exit polls in alabama and mississippi yesterday are giving us a better idea of why santorum
6:06 am
is still running strong with the party and romney is failing to seal the deal although no one expected him to walk away with both states. heather joins us now with more on why people voted the way they did. what have you found out? >> a lot of stuff going on. let's start out with a look in alabama. in alabama, santorum picking up support from a variety of groups. conservatives, evangelicals and a third of all independents able to vote in that primary. according to exit polls, rick santorum's strong ideas helped him come in first in that state. conservatives backed him by 41%. women 38%. evangelicals 35% and independents 33%. shifting gears to mississippi now, evangelicals backed by 35%. very conservative 39%. and married women, 41%. >> i think it's important, too, to point out how many evangelicals were in both states. between 70% and 80% of the voters are evangelicals and mitt

opportunities to clarify his position on that issue. to apologize for that issue and say maybe i wasn't so right about this and he has yet to do that. >> no, he's clarified it. i mean, he had a special speech on it and now there's going to be more emphasis on it because the supreme court is going to be looking at the mandate. >> he's changed in massachusetts after a democratic governor came into office. >> what i mean by that is he has yet to really explain himself on it and explain the fact that, perhaps, it was too liberal of a position for the state of massachusetts. >> actually, i think what he said is at the time, it was the right thing for massachusetts but the states' rights issue is not a federal issue is the way he's explaining it right now. basically, when president obama says we used some of that to craft obamacare, that's going to come up again. if it ends up being mitt romney, the g.o.p. nominee, it's going to come up from the left saying hey, if it's so bad, then why would, you know, why would you use it for your state? >> the state has certainly seen higher health insurance costs as

7:27 am
here it is $8.1 billion for those regulations under bush. $46 billion so it's costing americans that have businesses, privately, who is it costing? >> it's costing all of us. people ultimately pay the cost of all of this. in this country, we pay $1.3 trillion a year. 8 1/2%, 9% of our gdp of regulation. regulation keeps everything clean. most of it, 70% of it is economic regulation, you know, things like sweetheart deals for certain industries and, you know, price protection for certain people and so on. so it's way out of control no matter who does it. >> have to leave it there. charles, goyette, his book is right over his shoulder. good to see you. >> good to see you, too. the president's energy secretary said we should want $5 a gasoline. now he has a different story to tell. plus debbie ryan is walking down

8:06 am
the very conservatives went for rick santorum. 41. women, 38% for rick santorum. evangelicals, 35%. here is the important thing for me if i'm looking in november. 33% of the independents went for rick santorum. >> eric: mississippi, evangelicals 35%. very conservative, 39%. and that one right there, big number, 41%, married women. >> brian: all right. so we have those strength there is for santorum who walks away with a lot of different categories. also it's significant that newt gingrich did very well against mitt romney with seniors and those people who are really rich for the first time. those are two areas in which mitt romney usually locks up. the areas in which mitt romney was hoping for big -- to win big, he did win big. the turnout was low. so the big margin wasn't there for him to catapult himself to the top of alabama and mississippi charts. >> eric: can i point out something that you pointed out earlier? the person or the area that this
