how did she do? >> on the panel this week, writer and fox news contributor, judy miller, monica crowley. jim pinkerton and political commentator, sally combes. i'm jon scott. fox news watch is on right now. ♪ >> this congressional republican budget is something different altogether. it is a trojan horse. disguised as deficit reduction plan is really an attempt to impose a radical vision on our country. it is thinly veiled social darwin chg. what an interesting week it was at the white house.

how did the media cover it? >> president obama in full-fledged campaign mode. he wasted no time on tuesday ripping into the republican budget proposal as written by congressman paul ryan. president paints it as a series of cruel spending cuts. the question, jim, how did the media portray it? >> they completely agreed with the president on this. the "new york times" editorial page and news pages were synonymous, this is terrible. the president is clearly on the offensive on this. some are in favor and romney is kind of curious but economists wrote a sympathetic to romney line, actually embracing the ryan budget would be a good hill for romney to die on, unquote. they are being noble. >> jon: doesn't some intellectual honesty require a

politician to admit that medicare is in trouble and we need to do something? >> that is what the campaign is going to come down. whether you junk it as the obama people says republicans want to two or whether you wanted to shift it. look the campaign is it. we saw a full frontal campaign and we're off to the races. >> jon: what about that radical vision line. ryan budget is a radical vision? >> you can tell what the left is up to. they project on to the right what they themselves are doing. is most radical president in recent memory maybe in the entire history of the united states. for him to go out and accusing the republicans to put out a budget, and five and a half trillion in debt is outrageous.

it's outrageous the press has not really taken the time to take a look at what obama has actually achieving, ryan and the republicans here. president obama made a series of accusations which then inspired paul ryan to come out. this is the house budget chairman. he accused the president of lying about what he was presenting. he actually used that word lying. i think the "washington post" did a fact check, politico fact check did a fact check on the allegations and they found routinely she lying. he is distorting the truth about what the republicans are presenting. i want to see more media outlets take him to task and question his tear yeah of what it really is. >> paul ryan didn't come out and say the president misrepresented the fact of the budget plan at all. i think what is striking here, i would like to see more discussion in the media about

facts as opposed to just the spin and the facts. >> that paul ryan wants to to cut spending and help middle-class poor and seniors and give that money to millionaires and billionaires. that is actually -- the point is what is frustrating about the media coverage of all of this increasingly to the election we're going to keep spinning different opinions. let's put the numbers on the table. credible people have done this. let's talk about those numbers. >> then let's talk about the president's challenge to the supreme court. here is what he had to say about the possibility that the supreme court might overturn his beloved obamacare. >> ultimately i'm confident that this the supreme court will not take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority,

a democratically elected congress. >> jon: there were a number of statements in that little line that could be challenged, a strong majority of the congress? [ laughter ] >> as i remember, it squeaked through. >> this is a case where the media demonstrated they are more institutional than ideological. they slammed the president for this. the supreme court does have a right to review things. some wise guys in the sixth circuit, why don't you explain to me whether attorney general holder agrees with madison. they have to say they did. >> i found, jim, at least one "washington post" columnist that did not agree. he found the president's attack as timid stuff. to say they are unelected. that is true and attack on the

court and he is confident that they are going to do the right thing. that, too, is not an assault on the court. i think it's just what historian who covered fdr and we know how that ended when he tried to sack the court called it a nudge. >> hats off to bill plant who took on jay carney over what the president had to say. let me play that. >> obviously, he talked about the courts not being in a position to overturn -- >> he made a mistake and you can't admit it. >> he is acknowledging. you are sharing in the right out indignation here. >> jon: the president made a

mistake. is that possible? >> yes, it is. this is a guy that doesn't mince words. that the larger point. i think the media coverage, it's like the drama of all this. again we miss the fact. the fact and constitutional law professor, he understand marbury versus madison and the media hasn't done a good job that republicans who now have their hair on fire about this have made the exact same comments about judicial activism. yes, they have. >> you are misinterpreting what judicial ago virtually really is. >> this is an existing narrative remember 2010 state of the union address we have unreal spectacle egging on the legislative branch to the judicial branch as they sat right there.

seven months is not only romney out of touch but he is hiding his assets. >> are the media helping that narrative that the president is trying to paint? >> i think that those in the media who favor barack obama would clearly like to have rick santorum stick around a little bit longer so we can broaden the gender gap of who is favor of barack obama versus those to mitt romney. 18 points. goodbye rick, it's time to go. people feel that whether or not they are republican or conservative. that is what you are hearing in the press. >> jon: here is sample of the "washington post." every day that romney has to deal with santorum is another day that -- everything he needs to do to raising money and raising his positives is complicated by santorum math

like irritation. >> get off. this primary has gone on this long for two reasons, super pac and gone on because of the media. the media has loved this. they have something interesting to talk about. so the reality they are going to move on and talk the next couple weeks about the vice presidency. in the meanwhile, it's entirely appropriate for the media to scrutinize, romney is unpopularity with women and middle-class voters and fact he hasn't released the details of financial holding in companies that ship jobs overseas. that is the role. >> i'm going to vetting candidates. think i he should be investigated but they didn't do it four years ago and they are not going to do it again. >> they set them up this way to mirror what happened on the democratic side. in hillary clinton they liked the attention given to that.

is the press covering the same way they covered that? >> no. obama negatives have gone up steadily. and positive and negatives stayed above water. headline would hillary and obama had a great day. romney is rich guy that they don't like much. >> i think the reason the negatives, it's different. the democratic base, they were genuinely excited by barack obama and hillary clinton. reason that romney's negatives has been going down this is ugly primary because so many of the republican base don't like it. they don't like him. that is why they are looking for anybody but him. >> there is more news watch. sarah palin guests hosts the today show? how did she do.

>> big difference. >> so big that nbc launched an internal investigation but only after airing it. they did apologize for airing it on the today show and other places but only after critics slammed their coverage of martin and the accused shooter zimmerman. judy you have spent most of your career in print but what do you say about that selective editing. you say you need more than the apology that nbc gave after fox news broke that story, by the way, of actually comparing these two excerpts. you need a specific apology to mr. zimmerman who is more than just a viewer. who was a little put out by this. but you need to know more how it happened. whether or not it was deliberate who did it and what are the necessary steps that nbc says it's going to putting in place to make sure it doesn't happen again. >> i worked at nbc news back in the early '90s when he failed to

disclose ignitors we had put in a gmc pickup truck actually caused the truck seemed to explode. that that scandal only embarrass add major advertiser, general motors but it cost the head of the news division his job and couple executives at date line nbc their jobs. >> internal investigation in appropriate clause here. it's obvious they are not investigating anything. there is no mystery how it happened. ignite did it on purpose. you don't take snippet out of the middle in quotes. and not only do they owe an apology to mr. zimmerman. they ought to do it on television. >> it was a print statement where this apology came out. >> jon: considering where racial tensions of been on this story. is in any of this defensible?

>> this is horrible. it is a huge, awful mistake. i think there should be an investigation. we have no idea what was in the mind of the person that made those edits. it should be taken but at the same time, let me say this: in terms of what is in whose mind, one of frustrating things is media's focus on what was in zimmerman's mind as though that is only proxy to determine race played a role in this case. the media in general should have a broader conversation how racial bias may be a factor in crimes like this even if he wasn't an overt racist as nbc was trying to show. >> it should be a external investigation, not internal investigation. like they did with dan rather. >> and nbc made the original outrage and "new york times" repeated the outrage and then when fox news blew this wide open, msnbc ran the original cut and tape without acknowledging

the error. that compounds the outrage. >> jon: we have to move on. sarah palin holds her own against the mainstream media. d disappoint, receiving generally positive reviews, and news, a slam-dunk, she was relaxed and poised. palin how knew how to play the game and personable, escaping without any major gaffes, i guess that's a compliment. from christian science monitor, she was a perfectly competent performer poked fun at herself while handling tough questions without wilting, judy, your review. >> well, i think my review is less important than that of the audience, which is she won in the rating and she beat america's sweetheart, katie couric, the woman who tormented her four years ago, asking her tough questions, that she couldn't answer.
