>> julie: new polls showing a tight race between president obama and mitt romney in some battle ground states. >> eric: it's fascinating. one of the states, florida. the latest polling from rasmussen reports shows president obama and mitt romney run neck in neck in that state. last month when rick santorum was still in the race, the president had a slight lead over romney by three points. and the real clear politics average has the president only a few ticks ahead of mitt romney there. joining us now is scott rasmussen. scott, great to see you. what does this say when the president is basically neck in neck with mr. romney in florida? >> there is two things here. first, since rick santorum and newt gingrich have effectively conceded the race, a lot of their supporters who said they would never vote for mitt romney are saying something to the effect of, well, i'm not happy about it, but i still want to
5:53 pm
vote against president obama. so they're beginning to give a little bit of their support to governor romney. the other story in florida is there is a question of how much the president's health care law is going to hurt there. this is a state the president won by three points the last time around. seniors are more unhappy with the health care law than any other demographic. they're also obviously very influenced by the health care situation. it's a big part of their voting decision. this is a state that right now is it too close it call and as the health care issue becomes big news again in june, could have a huge swing. >> julie: let's look at virginia, it's similar there. romney is ahead of the president by only one point. so pretty much a tie. this is a significant turn around from a month ago. president obama actually once held a nine-point lead over romney in virginia. what is going on there? >> part of it, again, the consolidation and president obama's approval in the state down just a little bit over the past month. what we're seeing -- this is a

state that president obama won last time, first democrat to win since 1964. florida and virginia are two of what we're calling core four states. the others ohio examine north carolina. mitt romney needs to win all of the core four states if he wants to win the white house and right now, they're all in toss-up status. >> eric: that's pretty astounding. there is a poll on vice presidential pick. guess who is in the lead. condoleeza rice? >> we asked in terms of a favorability of all the candidates, a lot of names have been mentioned. dr. rice said she's not interested in the job. 66% of voters have a positive opinion of her. that includes 32% with a very favorable opinion of republicans. these numbers are off the charts. but again, she said she's not interested in the vp job. >> julie: then now let's take a look at potential running mates. >> eric: student loans. >> julie: yeah, student loan, i'm sorry. this week president obama and mitt romney actually have been out courting the youth vote.
5:55 pm
that is one that has kind of sort of gone up and down for both of these. students loans drive college tuition up. let's look at your poll. 48% say they agree. >> that's right. the american people want to help poor people and middle income students go to college. they believe it's important. but there are concerns. as you point out in this poll, about half say this is one of the reasons, the cost of college is get so long high. voters think there is another option. seven out of ten say it's better if students would work their way through college, take six or eight years to graduate rather than doing it in four and end up with no college debt. that's a prescription that most americans feel pretty good about. >> julie: all right. it's sort of sad to see that they are spending all their money on college tuition and then they can't get jobs once they get out. that is incredibly frustrating and both presidential candidate also have to tackle that issue, of course. scott rasmussen, thank you very much. good to see you. >> eric: good to see you. >> good to see you.
