guantanamo bay, cuba. the obama administration hopes to shut gitmo down and hoping to move cases like this to civilian courts and congress blocked the efforts and catherine herridge is monitoring the proceedings and joins us live outside the compound. >> reporter: well, thank you, uma, good morning, before the hearing began today, a one-time military contact of mine said we could expect the unexpected and we could expect fireworks and that is exactly what unfolded in the courthouse over my shoulder, when i was here for the first arraignment of the 9/11 suspects in 2008 under the bush administration, the five men tried to take control of the proceedings by acting as their own attorneys, and today they tried to take control of the proceedings, by refusing to cooperate, by refusing to answer questions and refugue to wear the ear phones, through which they can hear the arabic translation and they said they would not wear the headphones because it is too similar to the torture they sustain at the hands of the u.s. government and
12:01 pm
also in court there were antics by the 9/11 suspects, and ramsey binalshibh and momegot up and s praying and it is clear they chose not to talk and we went to a recess, they began to joke openly and talk to each other and, one point khalid sheikh mohammed, the self-described architect of 9/11 passed the message down the chain from one detainee to the other and six of the 9/11 families, we could not see them, there is a curtain that separates them from the journalists and we spoke with eddie bracken, before he came down to began bay and he said he had to be there today. >> and for me, as a family member, to know that if that was me, my sister would go there for me, my sister would face that guy. i have no problem of facing them. >> to give you a little bit of the layout for the afternoon, we

getting the campaign underway against a back drop of discouraging news, yesterday on unemployment, though it is lower, the improvement is entirely due to the fact so many people have given up trying to find a job. doesn't it curb the president's re-election momentum? >> no, i don't think it does at all, because when you look the a, compared to years ago, though it is a small gain, over 100,000 jobs gained, not over 700,000 jobs lost, firstly and secondly, you know, in november, it is not going to be for most voters about numbers, democrats will vote for the president and republicans will vote for mitt romney and we're looking at 15% of the independents and centrists and where will they vote and they'll vote with their feelings, how they feel about the economy and unemployment as opposed to numbers and about the candidates, relatable and if they are likable and though i think it will be a tight n fail-biting race i'm confident
12:04 pm
the president will be reelected . >> the discouragement of job seekers is growing. what makes you sure mitt romney can do any better than president obama? >> well, i think, leslie has a good point, it is not about the minutiae of the numbers, it will be more organic, how we feel about the economy in general, the first tuesday in november and along those lines it will be mitt romney's jobs and every republican's job to have a strategy if the job numbers are actually, heaven forbid looking better and the way to approach that is to say we have enormous, crazy spending and obamacare, a dragon that must be slain and assaults on your liberties coming from this president, economically and socially, and, i want the job numbers to get better but i want governor mitt romney and, have the message they can use to win, nonetheless. >> in a move to win over female voters, the white house unveiled the julia campaign, show casing the fictional julia and how the president's policies helped women from the moment they are

born, and call that for a moment, she's at three years old, for example, and, it says, because of the steps president obama has taken to improve programs like this, she joined thousands of students, across the country who will start kindergarten ready to learn and succeed. and under mitt romney saying he will cut head start programs, like this, by 20%, and the other side, people who are conservative and who don't agree with this, are saying, like people -- they say under the current pro grief policies, julia's mom is forced to work outside the homes and will spend two years in overcrowded rooms with minimal standards of learning and will enter kindergarten at a severe disadvantage than children whose parents had more options. mitt romney never said he'd cut head start 20% and the campaign is a bit misleading, isn't it? >> both sides of taken leeway
12:06 pm
and that is unfortunate when you have an election year and not just presidential elections, proof is in the pudding and historically and statistically over the past decade, mud slinging and taking things out of context, sound bites, worked and i don't like them but they are effective and that is why politicians do use them on the right and left and what is not inaccurate of the platform mitt romney will be standing on, the g.o.p. that is wrapped in the color red as opposed to the blue, when you look historically, on a state or federal level, democrats are always this ones fighting. i love in california and we hear in california, democrats, fighting to keep education and one reason julia's class is overcrowded is because republicans are constantly cutting. to me, whatever they get -- when they get into a room and say we need cuts, one of the first things is education and if julia suffers from education or not be able to have a federal pell grant or borrow more money for secondary education, i'm sorry. but i put that on mark's guy.
12:07 pm
>> mark, opponents say... >> give me a second. listen, if i can... >> but i want to jump in here, for a second -- >> i love -- >> let me jump in, doesn't it show the president's vision, wants people to understand it is about the government directing people's lives? >> yes, thank you. thanks for that, here we go, it is an opportunity for republicans to say, julia get out of the governor's trough and live your own life. the thing that makes her ready for the first day of kindergarten is the quality of her family, not per capita spending in her classroom and there is no connection between per capita spending and the quality of education, and i envision president julia, at age 30 unhooks from the government teet and becomes an entrepreneur and becomes the governor of a red state and is elected the first republican woman president and her life can go a lot of ways and we want liberty and less taxation and more freedom for her and i'll take that to the bank any time. >> what is your response. >> first of all, i have to say,

mark, the last word here. >> the bottom line is, i know it is easy to paint, only the government thinking that can save women in dire circumstances, i would say those women that your kids and mine, i have hey 20-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old son and their lives in better in schools that are well run and managed and the notion funding is cut automatically you must have larger class sizes, not if the school is well run and not overspending, it is better for all women, all girls and boys and men to have responsible taxation and responsible spending and let julia and jerry and whatever counterpart, let the boys and girls grow up to be men and women in an america where there is reasonable spending and fiscal responsibility and fair taxation. >> always great to have you on board. thanks for your insights today. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> he's not even the official republican nominee but the vetting process for mitt romney is underway and, these are just four of the names out there.
