there was drama. proceedings happening at camp justice at the prison in cuba. inside the courtroom observers saying ksn refused to answer the judges questions. short time later all of the defendants appear to take some sort of a silent

protest against the proceedings then one of the men breaking the silence shouting at the defense table in a mix of arabic and broken english. we are told he said quote maybe they are going to kill us and say that we are committing suicide end quote. all 5 men facing nearly 3000 counts of murder for their alleged role in 97. >> 9/11. >> family washing the proceedings on television at army base ins new jersey. maryland. massachusetts sets. new york city. one man is angry it took so long for the trial to get under way, he lost his son. >> everybody was touched. everybody knew somebody throughout all new york. 1 million new yorkers or two million new yorkers. everybody was touched. everybody was hurt. we knew somebody that died that day. my son died that day. i miss him terribly. i won't get him back but this gives me satisfaction that the master mind has been brought to justice. >> we are here for the long-term. it's been a long long time and we want justice

for our family. >> many family echo the sentiment but as one gitmo attorney put it this is only the beginning of process that will in fact take years. >> chief intelligence correspondent harris live at guantanamo bay this evening. what is happening now inside the courtroom. >> we have seen some real movement in the last few minutes. the 9/11 suspects and simply has the affect of setting the wheels in motion for a trial. the government has said they want to go august 1st of this year. the defense attorneys have asked for a delay until may of 2013. that issue is unsettled. i was in the courtroom with 5, 9/11 suspects and they came in court with a strategy to us from straight and delay the process. they refused to cooperate with the june. they refused to answer questions. they refused to wear ear phones to hear the air bic translation and we just had another bizarre episode in the last few minutes. the

judge said to one of the detainee, stop. stop. put your shirt back on or you will be escorted from the courtroom. from our vantage point we could not see which detainee it was but it seems to fit a pattern today of frustrating and also delaying the process here. >> all that going on. then you had witnesses there. some of the 9/11 families themselves in court. >> well that's right. there were 6, 9/11 family whose traveled down to guantanamo ba bay, cuba earlier this week. they were in the courtroom with us but there is a long blue curtain that separates the families from the reporters so we can't see them directly but through most of the hearing there was this virtual silence. i could see upped the curtain at times. some of the family tapping their feet. and it was also clear in court today that this was a decision by the 9/11 suspects not to answer the questions because when they were on their recess you could see the men talking to each other and passing messages to each other and even laughing in

the courtroom and that must have been very tough for the 9/11 family tots take. >> so i know the court dealt with pretty serious legal issues in the case. >>reporter: well, there are a couple really that stand out. some of the defense attorneys including commander has said they haven't had adequate resources to prepare for the hearing. he hasn't had a dedicated translator for a year and he doesn't speak arabic. there are accusing the military of keeping things secret because it's embarrassing for the government but the chief pros cawtor here sees it differently. >> there really are sources and methods about future attacks and future dangers. begin understand the skepticism. it is not a justification to not disclose information because it is embarrassing or because it violates a law. >>reporter: just for some
