we begin first with an extreme weather alert. lots of people around the east coast especially talking about this. tropical storm beryl making landfall overnight. this storm is bearing down right now is jacksonville beach, florida. that happened and hit landfall just after midnight. hurricane-strength winds of 70 miles per hour. the weather system continues to dump rain over parts of florida, georgia and the southern part of south carolina today. the storm making a mess out of memorial day plans for many. and the rip tide creating dangerous surf off the coast of florida and georgia. but still, some are braving the weathers despite all those warnings. the governor of florida urging residents to be on alert and aware. for some beach goers, a rude awakening. >> really got out of control. we couldn't control it. we finally came back in but still way off our course. >> not stopping those kids in the background, right, from having a good time. a new advisory is issued at the top of the hour.

maria molina is standing by live in the weather center with us. >> good morning, guys. good to see you. happy memorial day. we're talking about tropical storm beryl that's bringing a lot of rain across parts of the southeast. up to a foot of rain is expected across parts of florida and north georgia. not good to deal with the tropical system here for the weekend. believe it or not, it's not officially the atlantic hurricane season just yet. that starts on june 1st and we're already down for a second snamd system for the reason. really active right you now. we have this system right now, sustained winds at 50 miles per hour so it has weakened a little bit, made landfall after midnight across parts of north florida near jacksonville. it's producing wind gusts at times of 50 miles an hour. most of them are lower than that. by 2:00 a.m. tuesday, we expect the storm system to continue to weaken and just be a tropical depression. that's what we're look at here. it's going to be slow to turn

northward. we'll continue to see that system making more of a northeastern turn and because it's going to be moving so slowly, it's going to continue to dump a lot of heavy rains but we are in a drought out here. we need the moisture. when you get that much rain in such a short amount of time, you're talking about flash flooding concerns. >> thanks, maria. they've rebuilt some of the beaches down there from daytona down. they don't need this on memorial day of all days. thanks a lot. >> certainly do not. thank you. meanwhile, memorial day is a time to thank as we pay tribute to the brave men and women who have protected our country through the decades. both president obama and mitt romney set to honor those americans at special ceremonies throughout the day. >> yeah, kelly wright live in washington with the details on what the president and the governor are doing this morning and also what john mccain is doing. nice to see you. >> good to see you as well. dave and ainsley as well. president obama and first lady michelle obama will attend memorial day ceremony at arlington national cemetery to lead the nation in remembering the brave men and women who made

the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the military. the commander in chief will lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown to pay a solemn tribute to unknown heroes who served and died in defense of this country. afterwards, the president along with vice president joe biden will visit the vietnam war memorial. the president there will deliver the keynote address during a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the start of the vietnam war. now, over the weekend, president obama in his weekly address called on all americans to help veterans and their families. >> we have to serve them and their families as well as they've served us. by making sure they get the health care and the benefits they need, by caring for our wounded warriors and supporting our military families. and by giving veterans the chance to go to clevenlg, find a good job and enjoy the freedom that they risked everything to protect. >> later today, the man who wants to become president, governor mitt romney will join senator john mccain, a former

p.o.w. and war hero of the vietnam war, the two will present a memorial day tribute of the veterans museum and memorial center in san diego. you know, president obama says memorial day is more than just a three-day weekend. yet, in the coming weeks, we will see it means a lot to him as well as to governor mitt romney because in these coming weeks of the presidential campaign, both men will be vying for, competing for the military vote. dave, clayton, ainsley, back to you? >> thanks so much. >> thanks a lot, kelly. it should be interesting, mccain won that by 10 points. eight point gap right now for mitt romney. see where it goes. >> right. for the rest of your headlines, defense secretary leon panetta says the pentagon has a plan ready for military action to prevent iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon but the u.s. remains focused on reaching a diplomatic solution. >> we begin with the fundamental premise here and the fundamental premise is that neither the united states nor the international community is going to allow iran to develop a nuclear weapon.

we will do everything we can to prevent them from developing a weapon. >> panetta's comments come as iran's nuclear chief declared there is no reason for his country to halt production of uranium enrichment to 20%. a key demand of world leaders. and now the latest on the etan patz case. pedro rodriguez is charged with second-degree murder and some grisly new details are emerging. this morning's "new york post" reporting that hernandez reportedly stashed the boy's body in a refrigerator before discarding it into the trash. it's unclear how long hernandez who was then 19 years old kept patz' body hidden in that corner bodega. meanwhile, police say they are trying to confirm that his descriptions of the basement matches the architectural drawings from 33 years ago originally saying he put that body in a bag. all right, rolling thunder rolled through our nation's capital yesterday.

hundreds of thousands of people showing up at the annual motorcycle rally which makes sure our war heroes are never forgotten. they were able to finish the ride before the bad weather rolled in. no pun intended. forcing the national memorial day concert to close down. about half way through the event, host gary sinese told concert goers they should go and seek shelter. >> ladies and gentlemen, you heard the capital police. we have a severe weather warning and we ask that everybody leave in an orderly fashion. >> that's not fun! the broadcast then transitioned into last year's concert after a reported message apologized for being unable to air the rest of that event. and country music star tim mcgraw doing his part to give back to veterans this memorial day. he's launching a nationwide project called homefront to help wounded warriors and service members in need. as part of the effort 25 families will be awarded with

finish. >> emotional day. my father-in-law was there yesterday and i couldn't imagine being in that crowd at that track with that amount of heat, 130 degrees. some say 140 on the track. at some capacity. i don't know how they dealt with that. >> one driver, marco andretti said he felt his shoe melting to the pedal at one point. they always deal with heat. dario says he has a 200-mile-an-hour air conditioner to keep cool. i don't know if we have the crash. a japanese driver was going to pass franchitti on the final lap, looked i can he might win it. he wiped out. said franchitti didn't give him enough room. >> this is the race where you drink the milk at the end. >> what is one beverage you think you want to cool down with? i don't think a milk. >> that's not true. put a little ice in it. have you had ice with your milk?

have job creation unless you have profit making. i don't care whether you open a lemonade stand or you're running staples. if you don't turn a profit, you don't add jobs and it's pretty hypocritical given this administration doesn't have one net job and piling on $1.5 trillion in debt with no plan to pay it down. keep doubling down on bain. >> is it hypocritical? the president holding fundraisers with private equity firms and on the other hand criticizing bain capital oochltite not hypocritical at all. that's what this election is going to be about. i think the president is absolutely right to make sure that people understand what exactly happened at bain capital or what the tenure of mitt romney's term was. and that was it was a wealth creator. for him to go out and say he created 100,000 jobs is blatantly false. at this time when you not only

define yourself but define your opponent, they call this record on the carpet. that's what the president is doing with these ads and other folks. >> republicans try to paint the president not having to do much of a diffilt job with that is calling him the debt president and according to cbs, the debt increase of 87% or $9.34 trillion and the president's amount of debt up to upwards of $15 trillion a lot of that on his watch. >> and the president has laid out a plan to get rid of that budget. he's put out a thoughtful plan to reduce that budget by $4 trillion. he's put out a plan in there. he inherited an absolute mess, we talked about before. he had to put in some stimulus measures and he had to put in some measures. >> ford, i'll give the final word. >> if mitt romney wants to win this bain argument, he will paint himself as a turn around artist adebt at cleaning up messes. president obama inherited a bad situation but bottom line is

and we wanted to do the book in a forum that the military families could journal so they could share their memories and leave their legacy. >> it's for the family as a whole, not just the spouses. >> that's deceiving. there's four of us that wrote it and we're all military spouses but it's for everyone. >> we can't get through 1,001 this morning. we encourage people to read this but we did pull a few. we have five of our top favorites. our first one, let's pull these up. here's the first one. memorial day, learn about it. educate others about it. tell us about those. >> absolutely. we want individuals to educate themselves and their children and to take the time this morning to reflect on what memorial day really means. >> all right. our second one, let's pull this one up. this is feeling grateful when you see someone in the military. tara, that's so important. >> you know, there's so many ways to do this and we were talking about this this morning and i said, you know, you can write a letter through -- through different organizations that star will tell you some about and you can go out and thank a service member by buying dinner.

what's most important to our service members after all the talk we've done is you take care of our families. our families is the backbone. our army and all of our services, we're army, sorry about that, but our families and if you take care of me and my family, my husband is even stronger and can do what he needs to do when he's on the battlefield. >> that's great. we're all one big family in this country, aren't we? what about memorials? you encourage people to go visit memorials. >> there's so many military -- so many civilians that don't understand the true sacrifice that military families and gold star families, those who have lost loved ones to a war or service, they don't understand or connect with how we feel. and visiting a memorial and seeing that impact and that loss that is there forever would be really helpful. >> you'll never forget. the next one that we have, number four, we pulled this one, attitude of support our troops. unifying attitude of support our troops. explain this one. >> it's definitely something that we all need to embrace, i think we forget sometimes we are

kids who have lost somebody in ir iraq. >> carson, your father brent was killed in afghanistan in action during a helicopter crash in operation enduring freedom. on this day, we honor his memory and all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to this country. what does this day mean for you and what does this tournament mean for you and your family? >> this day means to me a day that we remember to honor my dad and this tournament and everything just helps me know like everyone -- more people out there care more about other people when there's loss and sacrifice. >> vanessa, you and brent were high school sweethearts. tell us a little about brent and about what this tournament means to you. >> well, this -- this tournament means everything to me. i am so grateful to major rooney and to the folds of honor

foundation. giving carson this educational scholarship is a huge weight lifted off of me and brent and i did grow up in the same hometown. we were high school sweethearts and we went to college together. so we were married for 17 years. and he was -- he was truly my best friend, not just my husband. and to be a part of this, this tournament and to have the opportunity to share this day and to know how many people really care and support the military, it's an amazing -- and i'm just so grateful. >> you know, we look at your family and you're doing a wonderful job. you should be very proud of that. your husband was such a fine looking man and served all of our country and all of us. your son just spoke. i'm sure all of america felt the way we did when we heard him speak and thought, what an outstanding young man. he seems so educated and well spoken and you're doing a wonderful job. what does this mean? you were telling us what this means to you, this tournament, what was your dad like? help us to know him.

they suffered head injuries and back injuries. so far, it's still unclear what caused that cessna to go down and new york senator chuck schumer is fighting back against extra airline fees for families who want to sit together. >> your children can wind up being seated in different rows next to strangers and people they don't even know and out of sight of their own parents. that's absurd. >> schumer is asking transportation officials for new rules that would prevent this all from happening. former british prime minister tony blair testifying today in london about his relationship with the press and rupert murdoch as part of the phone hacking investigation involving the news of the world paper. earlier, blair insisted it was essential that top journalists and politicians have close relations. but added that he was aware this country -- or this could be unhealthy because of the power of the press. rupert murdoch is the c.e.o. of news corporation, the parent company of fox newschannel. and don't underestimate this little dog, she is already -- she's run 1100 miles across

like the folks near jacksonville beach where the storm came ashore 12:10 overnight while most folks were sleeping. you can see the flags are whipping up here. a good 50 miles an hour sustained winds with those tropical storm force gusts. up to 40 miles an hour from overnight. those winds should calm down throughout the day. we will see some rain bands coming through here. right now, most of the heavy rain is off shore and again to the north of here but that red flag is flying as well. you look down here in the waves, it's all churned up and you have 3 to 4 foot waves right there. once we get to high tide later this afternoon, this storm could wash out most of the beach activity this memorial day weekend up and down the east coast here of florida and they're going to close this beach off. too dangerous to get in the water. a lot of rip currents out there. they made 150 beach rescues over the weekend in daytona beach, just to the south of here. they're telling not to get in the water and by high tide this afternoon, most of the sand will be covered. good thing, though, on the southern end here, this is the good side of the storm where the wind is blowing from the south and blowing on shore to off shore unlike the folks up near

corporate sponsorships from companies like g.m. and comcast, they provide challenge grants. one went to the family of lance corporal shane harris who was killed in 2006 for a project in guatemala. >> they build a house for a homeless family in like five days. and the only thing that is, you know, that shows it was for shane harris is this tiny little plaque above the door. and it says in memory of shane harris. >> but in 2010, they faced another tragedy. when navy seal brendan looney, travis' best friend and roommate at the naval academy was killed in afghanistan. the two families decided to bury their boys together at arlington national cemetery. >> there's nothing more beautiful than knowing they laid together with these warriors and heroes and they're side by side like they were at the academy. >> last memorial day, president obama visit their graves and talked about their devotion to duty. >> brotherhood, sacrifice, love

of country. >> but the story doesn't end there. last september, janet was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. she fought for nine months while continuing to run the foundation before she finally succumbed in april just days before the fifth anniversary of travis' death. in her will, there was one special directive. >> that the travis foundation continues on through family and friends. >> inspires me, the reason why i'm standing before all of you is my brother. >> ryan manion took over from her mom to continue to find ways to carry on her brother's legacy. >> i don't know how many times i've had said to me in the last three weeks since my mom died, wow, you've got some big shoes to fill. and i do. and i couldn't be more proud of the family that i have. >> and so ryan and the rest of her family will spend this memorial day at arlington.

>> one of the refreshing changes when the president was elected, he talked about hope and change. whatever happened to hope and change? now it seems like he's coming out of the box where these old-fashioned negative ads. >> interesting. >> doesn't give their opinions, right? whatever happened to home and change? and now he's using the word forward, you know, we saw the banners, saw the banners change four years ago and now we're seeing, apparently we're going to see forward. >> stick with us, right? we're coming out of this recovery slowly is what the obama administration -- the obama administration is saying. we're going forward, we're leaning forward. it sounds very similar to another network's slogan as well. >> then robert gibbs said yeah, we are not stopping the bain attacks. this is what the campaign is going to be about. an interesting article in "the washington post" says democrats are on board now with the message after what we saw with cory booker, ed rendell, steven radner.

it's not officially hurricane season in the atlantic and we're down to storm number two or named storm system number two for us. right now, the system has the sustained winds of 50 miles an hour. that's basically -- we could see some gusts that are stronger than 50 miles per hour. that's something to keep in mind for everyone that lives across portions of northern florida. the storm system did make landfall late last night around jacksonville and expected to continue to weaken. once the storm system or the tropical system makes landfall and gets separated from the warm ocean water. that's what starts to weaken it. the warm ocean water is what fuels the storm system. by tuesday 2:00 a.m. sustained winds expected to be at 30 miles an hour. no longer a tropical storm but a tropical depression. it will be a very slow mover. start to take a curve towards the northeast as we head into wednesday. that's something that we're going to continue to track here and because it's such a slow mover, it will dump a lot of heavy rain generally between 4 to 8 inches across parts of northern florida and southeastern georgia locally up

to a foot is possible. that's welcome news across this part of the country because we're currently in a drought. exceptional across parts of northern florida and across parts of georgia. >> thanks so much, maria. >> the jazz festival was canceled in jacksonville, florida and you had all those campers, they had to evacuate as well with the weather. your travel plans might be affected. >> and the big concert there last night in d.c., kelly wright there in the d.c. area to tell us maybe more about that. but president obama, mitt romney both paying their respects by honoring america's veterans in different ways this memorial day. kelly wright is live in washington with a preview of their plans today. did you get a chance to go down there? the concert was, what, last night canceled by thunder. >> i did not get a chance to go down there. it was canceled because of the extreme weather that came through the area. i experienced that having some problems at my own house as a matter of fact, because of that storm. but anyway, the more important matter at hand is what's going on today and that's the fact that president obama is saying memorial day is more than just a

three day weekend. it's something much more in terms of men and women who have served so ironically in years past and current wars. he's participating in several events that honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting america's freedom much at arlington national cemetery where so many of america's military heroes are buried, president obama will attend a traditional but solemn wreath laying ceremony today. the commander in chief will lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns to pay a solemn tribute to unknown heroes who served and died at war. afterwards, the president along with the vice president joe biden will then visit vietnam, the vietnam war memorial, the president will deliver the keynote address during a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the start of the vietnam war. over the weekend, president obama in his weekly address called on all americans to help veterans and their families. >> we have to serve them and their families as well as

they've served us. by making sure that they get the health care and benefits they need, by caring for our wounded warriors and supporting our military families and by giving veterans the chance to go to college, find a good job and enjoy the freedom that they risked everything to protect. >> later today, the man who wants to become president, governor mitt romney will join senator john mccain, a former p.o.w. and war hero to the vietnam war. the two will present a memorial day tribute at the veterans museum and memorial day center in san diego. you got to picture this. in the coming weeks of the presidential campaign, president obama and governor romney will be competing for the military vote. the president continues to work on bringing the war in afghanistan to an end. touting his efforts as well, to bring us the u.s. combat troops home from iraq and then accrediting the u.s. military for killing usama bin laden. meantime, governor romney claims president obama's economic policies are making it hard for

veterans returning home to find good jobs. so even on this good veterans day, good memorial day, i should say, there's still room for politics. back to you. >> always. >> always. >> never takes a rest. not in an election year. thank you, kelly. >> he reportedly confessed to his grisly crime more than 30 years ago but no one alerted authorities. pedro hernandez's sister revealing today her brother told his church prayer group in the 1 1980's that he strangled little etan patz. he might have stashed the little boy's dead body in a refrigerator before discarding it in the trash. the 51-year-old is charged with second-degree murder. three family members are in stable condition after being rescued from this snow-covered mount i be -- mountainside in idaho. they waited there for 15 hours after surviving that nighttime plane crash. fortunately, one of the three was able to use a cell phone to call 911 to say they had survived that crash. they suffered head injuries and back injuries.

so far, still unclear what caused that cessna to go down. and two vietnam veterans separated by 500 miles and 42 years. look at that, shaking hands. they reconnect. thanks to a chance sighting in a magazine. jim daley decided to place an ad announcing a reunion for the second brigade eighth infantry. barry adams stumbled across it and realized daley was the man who saved his life during the war. >> what do you tell a man that saved your life 42 years ago? i said it took me 42 years to find you and he come over to me and hugged me and said we're like brothers. i said boy, you got that right. >> it blowed my mind. it just blew me out of the water! >> the two men say that they will never forget this weekend. and those are your headlines. >> thanks, ainsley. let's turn our attention to wisconsin, the state of wisconsin shaping up to be quite a bellwether in this upcoming election because what happens in wisconsin usually a blue state,

president obama won it by a landslide in the last election though has changed in 2010. things were different there and now to 2012. that's going on in that recall election with the new one coming out there. governor walker looks like with a few short weeks away, 50% in a new poll compared to the milwaukee mayor tom barrett. >> we've seen all these polls trending from either five points up to about nine or 10 points lead for governor scott walker. what's happened largely is scott walker really hasn't moved in terms of favorabilities but his opponent has gone down significantly in the last couple of weeks. and it's interesting because they haven't been talking a lot about the stripping of collective bargaining rights for public union members. that's what the recall is all about and now it's not necessarily about that because some feel they've worked. what does this mean nationally? is it a dry run as d.n.c. chair debbie wasserman-schultz said on

sunday. listen. >> what i think the implications will be is that -- that ultimately, i think tom barrett will pull this out but regardless, it's given the obama for america operation an opportunity to do the dry run that we need of our massive, significant dynamic campaign which can't really be matched. >> so this is fascinating in she's talking about the ground game there basically saying this is a practice run for us. it's a practice run for the obama campaign because they're putting the full weight and power of the obama for america re-election campaign behind getting the vote out there trying to get people to send in these ballots, trying to get them out and actually to vote on recall election day. >> wouldn't you have thought she would say the opposite because of what the polls are showing. >> this is a dry run and you're putting all your resources up there and then you lose. >> do you want her to say she doesn't think she can pull it out. she has to say that. >> she came back on twitter a little bit later and said i want to clarify, tom barrett is going

to win. >> he's well positioned to win on twitter. >> she has to say that. he's going to win. >> but the president is saying we put all our resources into this election. so if you did that and then you lose that election, what is it it mean nationally? maybe it means that collective bargaining rights needs to be stripped in other states and maybe it means that wisconsin is definitely -- >> maybe you're reading into it. maybe you're reading into it. maybe she's saying this is a dry run for our organizational skills and if we fail, then you know what? we need to redo some things going forward. >> up for interpretation. june 5th is the recall election and no governor has survived a recall election. it would be the first ever. >> it's interesting, you expect that in the south and some of the states that are more red states but from a blue state, you're right. it's interesting to see how this is going to play out. >> the last governor to win on a recall election, governor schwarzenegger in california. coming up on the show, a real war hero general mark dempsey chairman of the joint chiefs of

>> welcome back. violence in syria continues, president obama is calling on russia in a bid to help out assad but is the u.s. taking the appropriate steps in dealing with the syria unrest and the assad regime? >> joining us to weigh in on this is general martin dempsey. nice to see you on this memorial day, sir. thank you for wake up and getting up early with us on this day. thank you. >> it's actually a late morning for me. >> i was going to say in the military you're well before

anybody. >> no problem. >> let's play you some sound from senator john mccain who has been critical of the united states' actions against syria. take a listen. >> it's really an abdication of everything that america stands for and believes in. and on memorial day, we should be especially moved by this incredible inaction and failure to assert american leadership. >> it seems like, general, there's a lot of talk going on there. this weekend, we saw the atrocities against children by the syrian forces. is it time to take action and enough talking already? >> you know my job as the senior military leader in america is to provide the president options when political decision is taken. and i think that the events over the weekend are absolutely atrocious and i think the international community. i think the pressure has to be mounting on assad and should

continue to mount on assad and if asked for those options at some point, i'll be prepared to provide them. >> is a military option one of those? >> of course, the military, there's always a military option. but that military option should always be wielded carefully because one thing we've learned about war, i have learned personally about war is that it has a dynamic all its own. it takes on a life all its own and so you'll always find military leaders to be somewhat cautious about the use of force because we're never entirely sure what comes out on the other side. but that said, it may -- it may come to a point with syria because of the atrocities. >> general, when you look at that, talking about this military option, do you look to libya as a marker for success there and being able to say, worked in libya. do the two go hand in hand or do you have different ideas on the table? >> well, i think that it's always very risky to apply a template to any particular

conflict. as we've learned, again, lessons throughout history. i'm sure there are some things that we did in libya that could be applicable in a syria environment or syria scenario but i'm very cautious about templates. >> all right. moving now to afghanistan, leon panetta, the defense secretary on sunday criticizing what mitt romney has been saying on the campaign trail regarding our withdrawal. listen. >> the only way to get this accomplished in terms of the transition that we have to go through is to be able to set the kind of timelines that have been set here in order to ensure that we fulfill the mission of an afghanistan that governs and secures itself. >> the secretary of defense says this withdrawal is working. will it work long term? >> well, i think that a couple of things in reaction to that. i mean, the objectives of lisbon, the lisbon summit that establishes full transition at the end of 2014 remain in effect.

and what you've seen the leaders of the -- of nato do in chicago is decide that they needed a milestone in 2013 to pull them toward lisbon and so the milestone in 2013 involves us transitioning security responsibility to the afghans. which, by the way, is the only way this issue is ever resolved is the point at which the afghan security forces can take responsibility. john allen, the commander in the international security for afghanistan forces is responsible for doing periodic reviews about how that progress is going and one other point, the other point is that we've got now a strategic partnership agreement with afghanistan that commits ourselves to a longer term presence beyond 2014, the framework of which will be established over the last year. >> and one of the sticking points, of course, we had some guests on the show yesterday pointing out that pakistan perhaps the biggest international concern, perhaps

more so than iran with 100 nuclear warheads trained on that region and of course, everything that unfolded as it related to this doctor whom is now being held by pakistan for upwards of 33 years and his working with the united states in the international community to try to bring usama bin laden to justice. here is secretary panetta on that issue and we'll get you to sponld. -- respond. >> it is so difficult to understand and it's so disturbing. yet they would sentence this doctor to 33 years for helping in the search for the most notice -- notorious terrorist in our times. this doctor working against pakistan but against al-qaida. >> your thoughts on that? >> incredible. i can't imagine what they did. it's probably some tribal court. i certainly hope that's an appellate level court that would deal with it and reverse it. >> and your message today, chairman, on memorial day?

>> well, my message is that few families in america thankfully have had the experience -- the tragic experience of being handed a folded flag because of the loss of a loved one who has been killed or died in combat. and so, i want to make sure that i remind myself and that we remind ourselves that today is really about memorializing those who have died in the service of their country and made us who we are. saying that you -- the service men and women sacrifice lives and limbs and i thought about you when he said that. you went on to write a book "no turning back" why that title? >> because you can't go back and it was off of one of my friends that lost their lives in iraq, there was a picture that we kind of utilized for his memorial and it was him standing there kind of half -cocked backwards and half cocked forwards and that was kind of my tribute to him and also, there is no turning back. always moving forward. at least i am. >> got lesson for all of us to learn in the military or not, you have to move forward and remember -- take what was in the past but move forward. right. and move on. and i'm really proud of you for doing that. laura, what is your connection here? what's happening today in washington? why are you there? >> well, i am here in support

>> live look this morning outside near 48th street here in midtown manhattan as we have our incredible navy band playing for us here. >> on the streets of new york, isn't that great? >> so many people stopping by and taking photos and getting a chance to see this. it's still fleet week here in midtown manhattan as we memorialize those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country today. >> and later today, defense secretary leon panetta will lead the ceremony to thank our vietnam veterans. fox news shannon bream recently spent time with a special veteran, our fox news contributor lieutenant oliver north. and he told about the man he credits with saving his life decades ago. >> we are looking at 50 years since the vietnam war, joined by two of our distinguished veterans who have served our country and saved a lot of lives along the way. tell us what it was like coming back from vietnam and how the country felt at that point, how

you felt that you and your fellow soldiers were treated. >> coming back from vietnam was a great relief. i must say that. many of us who came off the back of the c-141 came down and kind of kissed the ground. we were glad to be home. when you get back from war like that, you kind of look back and you say that was tough. that was tough. but now i'm home. i have a sense of home, heart, this type of thing. and it was a wonderful feeling. now, we hear so much about the way the vietnam vets were treated when they got back from war either ignored and actually despised at times. that to me never really bothered me because what i figured, sometimes the greatest compliment is to be rejected by certain people and that gets you over that pretty quickly. did that work for you? >> same thing, jack. and of course, i stayed in the military. jack came back in the military. had he not been next to me several big battles when i got hurt, i wouldn't be here today. and i get to see jack regularly

now treating patients from this war, more than four decades later. and i see the kind of commitment that was built on the battlefields of vietnam where guys like those on this wall behind us were hit and hurt and died as a consequence. and i see a remarkable commitment that was made by this man and others like him to continue service to our country. it's powerful. >> 2.7 million people served in vietnam. men and women, many, as you remarked, more than 58,000 names on the wall didn't make it back. finally, there will be some recognition on monday for the secretary of defense leon panetta is going to honor those and their families from vietnam on this wall. what does that mean to see that finally happening? >> it certainly means a lot to me not so much for myself but those men and still who are up and around, we're getting kind of old now. >> you look fabulous! very spry and fit. >> but i think it's very

important. i think coming back from vietnam and treated the way we were was the beginning of a growth. and we have grown and grown and grown so that our combatants who were coming home today aren't faced with the types of things we were faced with back then. i think it's amounted to a lot of growth. >> you know, there's a reason why this is the most visited memorial in all of washington, d.c. part of it is a guilt trip. part of it is because the american people know how poorly the veterans of this war were treated. and part of it is because it has those names. the connections that existed. >> so personal. >> very personal. it's very difficult for me to stand there and i know which panels the guys that i and i -- he and i served with, in that rifle company, i lose it about every time we come here and

we've been here probably 100 times since it was built. whose services and ceremonies and reunions. and guys don't come to these reunions just to be modelin about it. they come because they remember the heroic sacrifices of those who were here. they come because to many of them, the defining moment of the war was a defining moment for them. and most of us, jack is a perfect example, have moved on. he was an enlisted medical corpsman and now he's a retired navy commander and still treating patients from this war. and all those that i know, my radio operator who you know well, official surgeon. not potheaded dropouts like

they've been depicted in the press and you'll see them all gathered on memorial day recognized for what they really did, not the way they were depicted by hollywood and by the media. >> what do you think it will mean to folks who are vietnam veterans and the families of those who didn't make it to have this recognition on memorial day? from the defense secretary? >> i think it will be absolutely wonderful for those who remain with us today and their families, i think it's absolutely wonderful. >> ask you about your work at walter reed with the young men and women coming back now, what are you seeing? what could we as the american people be doing better to welcome you home? >> i think what's being done now is very well done by many people and i think our combatants coming home today feel very welcome. the injuries of war are all kind of specific to the war. we had our very bad injuries as you recall from the vietnam war but there's a different type of injury today with these high level explosives, these i.e.d.'s and we're literally working with people with one, two, three,

four limbs and more blown off at a time and it never ceases to amaze me the spirit that these guys have in coming back and it's our job to put them together, both body, mind and soul to get them moving forward in life again. but one thing we don't want to see them do is to sit back and reminisce and gloat over the war and feel bad about the war. we want to return them to life just as quickly as possible so that they don't waste their next 20, 30 or 40 years. >> well, they are heroes as are both of you. thank you for your service and your continued service to the country. >> all right. well said. and an extreme weather alert now as we continue to track tropical storm beryl. it made landfall in jacksonville last night. we go to wosl steve gelbach live in florida. good morning to you. >> we're on the southern edge of where that tropical storm

warning extends. we're on the good side of the storm, if you want to call it that. a little about the of rain starting to fall here in the last 30 seconds or so. you can see the winds as well, whipping up there and the red flags are flying out today as well. that means the beach is closed to swimmers although i do see a couple of surfers on the other side of the pier on the north side taking advantage of some of these waves. look out at the pier and you can see the waves breaking maybe three or four feet now. a lot smaller than we saw overnight last night when the storm was turning to the north of here coming ashore just after midnight but the surf is dying down. still like a washing machine like, though. not a good time to be in the water. rip current is still a threat here. the winds have died down since the storm came ashore and the rains, watching the bands come through but not as severe to flagler beach is where most of the storm is feeling its impact right now. we're live in florida, back to you. >> thanks, steve, live for us in flagler beach. we'll check in with maria in a

backyard. cole slaw. >> great black eyed pea salad. really, really tasty. >> at the end, you caught our attention this morning. you said you were going to be showing off this which was a -- it looks like a mojito. it's not. >> this is a new drink. it's a smoke-jito. we smoke it over oak and hickory woods from our good friends in colorado, they provide us the greatest woods and we use similar to any standard mojito but we grill off and smoke off the limes as you can kind of see here. that's really add that little smokey flavor. >> crush it up with some sugar. >> you want to put your -- about eight or so wedges of lime in there. six or seven mint leaves and 2 tablespoons of sugar. muddle that in there and then you're going to pour in some rum. however much you like. >> help me! >> then a little bit of club soda or sprite, whatever your favorite lemon-lime soda is. and then the rub. rim the glass with everything. >> here's what i'm going to do because, you know, i want to get

little bit with vince gill, country music superstar. >> if you want to contribute to that, and we have very generous viewers, folds of honor.org is the web site so you can go and contribute. >> all right. and we also want to tell you about an extreme weather alert this morning. you've heard us talk about tropical storm beryl making landfall overnight. the storm bearing down on jacksonville beach, florida. just after midnight. with hurricane-strength winds of 70 miles an hour creating dangerous riptides along the coast. weather system continues to dump rain over parts of florida, georgia as well as the southern part of south carolina today. maria molina standing by in the live fox weather center with the latest for us. hey, maria. >> hey, ainsley. we got a brand new advisory from the national hurricane center basically stating that tropical storm beryl is continuing to weaken so earlier this morning, it has sustained winds at 50 miles per hour. now, just barely a tropical storm with sustained winds at 40 miles per hour so again, the

storm system continuing to weaken. and the center of it is actually 50 miles to the west of the city of jacksonville. it did make landfall a little bit after midnight. early this morning across parts of northern florida. and the storm system is expected to be generally slow moving. right now, towards the west at about 8 miles an hour. it will take more of a northerly turn as you head into tuesday and wednesday before turning to the northeast and accelerating into open waters. by wednesday, 2:00 a.m. we expect it to have sustained winds of 35 miles an hour. just a tropical depression but the big story with this system is not just the wind but how much rain it will be producing across southern parts of south carolina, georgia and florida. we're talking about rainfall accumulations between 4 to 8 inches of rain. locally up to a foot of it. we need the moisture out here, though. it's somewhat of good news. exceptional drought going on across northern parts of florida and the state of georgia under a drought right now and southern parts of south carolina so again, much needed moisture out here.

we'll be seeing a lot of that rainfall from beryl. aside from beryl, we also have a lot of other weather going on across the country including severe weather possible today across parts of texas, great lakes and across the interior portions of the northeast. heads up, you will be seeing some showers and some thunderstorms today here and some of those storms could produce large hail and damaging winds and we can't even rule out an isolated tornado or two along some of those areas that could see severe weather. other big story is extreme heat. 90's for chicago, cleveland, kansas city into texas. >> you thought it would be an easy morning on memorial day. not so much. >> no. >> thanks so much. on this memorial day, a time for thanks as we pay tribute to the brave men and women who have protected our country through the decades. both president obama and governor romney set to honor those americans in special ceremonies throughout the day. and kelly wright live at the white house this morning with the details. good morning, kelly. >> clayton, ainsley and dave, good morning to you as well. the president said over the

weekend that memorial day is more than just a three-day weekend, he wanted to talk about the brave men and women who have served in harm's way paying with the ultimate sacrifice. having said that, the president and the first lady will actually be speaking or he will be speaking at the memorial day ceremony at arlington national cemetery to lead the nation in remembering the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the military. arlington national cemetery is where many of the military heroes are buried. president obama attending today's solemn but traditional ceremony. they'll be paying a solemn tribute to unknown heroes who served and died during the war. afterwards, the president along with vice president joe biden will visit the vietnam war memorial. the president will deliver a keynote address during a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the vietnam war. over the weekend, president obama in his weekly address called on all americans to

actually reach out and help veterans and their families. >> we have to serve them and their families to make sure they get the health care benefits they need and by caring our wounded warriors and supporting our military families and giving veterans the chance to go to college, find a good job and enjoy the freedom that they risked everything to protect. >> later today, the man who wants to become president, governor mitt romney will join senator john mccain, a former p.o.w. and war hero to vietnam war, the two will present a memorial day tribute at the veterans museum and memorial center in san diego later today, as i mentioned. also, by the way, president obama and governor mitt romney will be competing, vying for the veterans vote as well as the military vote. it will probably be very crucial as we head into the general election. they'll be trying to get that vote because they know it's so important for them to have it. back for you. >> it is, kelly, because it's

also in some key states. colorado, virginia, north carolina so it's also swing states. appreciate it. >> good to see you this morning and now so other stories making news this morning, he reportedly confessed his grisly crime more than 40 years ago but no one alerted authorities. here's his picture. this is pedro hernandez. his sister revealing today that he told his church prayer group back in the 1980's he strangled 6-year-old etan patz and we're learning new, disturbing details that hernandez might have stashed the boy's dead body in a refrigerator before discarding it in the trash. the 51-year-old is charged with second-degree murder. an emotional and a moving letter read by the top u.s. commander in afghanistan marking this memorial day. general john allen recited the words left behind by marine sergeant william stacy. when he addressed the troops at today's special ceremony in kabul. stacy was killed back in january but right before he died, he wrote a letter to his family. that was to be read in the event of his tet and here's part of

it. "there will be a child who will live because men left the security that they enjoyed in their home to come to his. and if my life brings the safety of a child who will one day change the world, then i know that it was all worth it." stacy was just 23 years old. rolling thunder rolled through our nation's capital yesterday. >> hundreds of thousands of people showed up for the annual motorcycle rally which makes sure our war heroes are never forgotten. they were able to finish the ride before all that bad weather rolled in forcing a national memorial day concert to close down. half way through that event, host gary sinese told concert goers they should go and seek shelter. >> you hear the capital police. we have a severe weather warning and we ask that everybody leave in an orderly fashion. >> the broadcast then transitioned into last year's

concert after a recorded message apologized for being unable to air the rest of that event. and country music star tim mcgraw doing his part to give back to veterans on this memorial day. he is launching a nationwide project called homefront to help wounded warriors and service members in need. as part of the effort, 25 families will be awarded with mortgage-free homes at each of his summer concert stops. he says being able to reward these vets for their dedication is something that he's honored to be able to do. and those are your headlines. >> thanks so much, ainsley. let's talk about the sunday shows because boy, have they been creating quite a bit of news lately. last weekend, we saw cory booker making news about his comments about being nauseated over the bain attack ads. this weekend, it was a couple of things. one of which was bob schieffer on "face the nation" questioning robert gibbs of the obama administration, all of these negative ads and interesting way that he phrased this. take a listen.

>> one of the refreshing changes when the president was elected, he talked about hope and change. whatever happened to hope and change? now it seems he's just coming right out of the box where these old fashioned negative ads. >> i don't think you need polling to understand why people have a visceral reaction to mitt romney's time as head of bain capital. what bain capital never did was focus on job creation. that's not what bain capital does. it loads up companies with debt. it takes money out of those companies and pays those investors. it's not about job creation and that's what mitt romney is running on and look, we've seen this experiment in massachusetts. he did the same thing when he ran in 2002 in massachusetts. and took that state's job creation numbers to 47th in the country. so we've seen this experiment. we've seen it in massachusetts, quite frankly, we saw it in 2007 and 2008 where we turned our

>> this memorial day, we honor the troops who gave their lives to protect our great country. what about honoring the heroes who came home? some iraq veterans feel snubbed by the pentagon, they say, after it refused to host a welcome home parade. so jim roberts, president of the american veterans center is now taking matters into his own hands. good morning, jim! >> good morning, ainsley. good to be with you. >> thank you. so why are the veterans, first of all, outraged? what's going on? >> it's not a case of outrage, i don't think. the pentagon's official view on this is that communities throughout the country should have their own parades. and we're just taking them up on that opportunity here in washington. the national memorial day parade

has been here since -- excuse me, since 2005 and we're learning that as an opportunity to welcome home and salute our iraq war veterans, we're hoping to have hundreds if not thousands of them walking in the parade today. >> am i wrong in saying that they feel snubbed? you're saying that they don't. >> i don't know. we haven't really discussed that much. they see this and we've urged them to see this as an opportunity to march not just for themselves but to march for those buddies of theirs who were killed and they're about -- there are over 4,000 of those who have fallen in iraq. we have taps, an assistance program for survivors, families of the fallen will be marching in the parade carrying placards with photos of their loved ones. we have about 1,000 active duty troops participating which is the most we've ever had. the pentagon has been very supportive there and finally we have several hundred or perhaps a few thousand actual veterans from iraq. >> i remember there was a lot of anger surrounding the new york giants parade.

why are we having a parade for a football team and not some of these veterans much that's what started all this. we tried to reach out to the pentagon and we haven't gotten back on this issue yet. we want to make sure we mention that so it's fair and balanced. some of the folks i'm understanding are upset about this. it sounds like you're taking matters into your own hands and creating a parade. that's great. tell me about that and what's happening as well. i understand some actors are involved as well. >> that's right. we started the -- we revived, i should say, the national memorial day parade in 2005 that has been dormant since 1942 in world war ii and never started up again for reasons nobody really understands so we -- we decided to give it a try in 2005. it's grown tremendously over the years. we now have typically 350,000, 400,000 spectators. it's televised all over the country. check your local listings. many fox affiliates are carrying it. the pentagon channel is broadcasting it worldwide so our

>> vitamin water! >> i know. this is healthy. good stuff for them. maria, what's going on as far as the -- it's beryl, still a tropical storm, right? >> yeah, still a tropical storm, tropical storm beryl. we're still tracking this storm system and it's actually, you know, not totally unusual but a little bit weird that it's not even hurricane season yet. the first day of the atlantic hurricane season is actually june 1st and we're down to our second named storm system of the season, tropical storm beryl. that did make landfall late last night near jacksonville, florida, currently 50 miles to the west of jacksonville, florida still producing a lot of rain across parts of northern florida, rough surf, rip currents and dangerous stuff for people who may have traveled down to florida and headed outdoors for memorial day weekend. be safe out there across parts of northern florida and southeastern georgia, the storm system is expected to continue to weaken and by late tonight into early tuesday, it should lose its tropical storm status

and become a tropical depression with sustained winds of about 35 miles per hour and really the big concern with beryl is how much moisture it's going to pack because it's going to be a slow mover. we're talking about 4 to 8 inches of rain possible across parts of northern florida and southeastern georgia so we're talking about a flooding concern possible out there and locally up it a foot of rain will also be possible and you can see it there on satellite and radar spinning in that moisture across parts of northern florida and also the coast of georgia so that storm will continue to turn towards the right. otherwise, across the rest of the country, pretty active day with severe weather possible across the great lakes and very hot temperatures. >> thanks so much. busy, busy memorial day in the weather department. thanks so much. >> now for the rest of your headlines, talk about throwing money to the wind. stepping down amid accusations of wrongly giving out nearly $44 million of taxpayer money, investigators say an audit found the agency misappropriated nine contracts. given senate pay for good work.

unemployment. he had a reduction in unemployment of about 8%, 10%, i think it was 15%. i had a reduction of unemployment of 50%. they had a growth of jobs of about 40,000. we had a growth of jobs of about 500,000. so i was comparing what i thought was my far superior record to his otherwise decent record but the numbers weren't as great. that's all part of campaigning. >> a ringing endorsement, right? >> all right, giuliani did go on to say that romney is a far superior choice for the white house than president obama. >> there's the silver lining. >> dave? >> all right. meanwhile, an exciting indy 500 with the leader changing dozens of times throughout a very exciting race. the winner is dario franchitti coming back from the spinout in the first turn that dropped them into last place but he's worked his way up to the lead in the end, takuma sato crashes on the final lap. he's from japan.

that plaque. >> it will be dario, dan wheldon, dario. but scott dixon and tony kanaan, it was all about dan wheldon yesterday, the former indy driver killed in the last year. >> the politics war right now seems to be about the state of wisconsin and some suggesting, including the head of the d.n.c. right now, debbie wasserman-schultz that what goes on in wisconsin is really a dry run for the obama campaign right now, the grassroots organizing because they have poured a lot of resources behind exactly what they're trying to do there. take a listen to her. >> what i think the implications will be is that -- that ultimately i think tom barrett will pull this out. but regardless, it's given the obama for america operation an opportunity to do the dry run that we need of our massive, significant, dynamic grassroots campaign that can't really be matched. >> i guess the question is what are they learning from this dry run? >> right. because they have said, they have pulled out all the stops, all the resources, she is going there herself to wisconsin to

help barrett but all the polls show scott walker with a comfortable lead and the latest shows scott walker up 50% to 42% over the milwaukee mayor. now, the question is what if walker wins there? what does it mean nationally? yes, all elections are local but it has national implications. does it mean wisconsin is in play for mitt romney? that went 14 points to barack obama in 2008. has it changed now? is it up for grabs? >> right, also in this race, too, we keep talking about on a national scale but also at play is the senate race in wisconsin which is the local senate race also being recalled. and all democrats need is one of those four senate seats that are in this recall to flip to the democratic side and everything gets shifted for the democrats in that state. so it's not just about the gubernatorial race in that state. it's also about the state senate. >> you were saying earlier this is traditionally a blue state. it's interesting that walker is getting -- >> but a very competitive one in 2000 and in 2004. just in 2008, it went the other

god bless the country. obviously we all say that and we think that. are we practicing it? >> remember after 9/11, everyone was saying god bless, god bless. i'm praying for you and it's almost taboo to say that nowadays to many people. >> you know what? sooner or later, if you're a christian, everybody will drop to your knees at one time in your life. you can't control everything. >> you're going to be singing for us in just a little bit here. this song, you were joking like my gosh, i recognize this song. so many people recognize the song. it's such an iconic american song now. what does this mean to you to have people come up to you? we saw all the troops here this morning as you were walking through the green room that say thank you. >> i've met a lot of them and talked to the navy band this morning and yes, we sang "god bless the u.s.a." at yankees stadium for the firemen memorial and policemen's memorial at carnegie hall and very moving event. no matter where i sing it, it's kind of uplifting and uniting and that's why i wrote the song and next year makes 30 years since i wrote it. >> when you wrote it, did you realize the impact that it would have? it gives us all chills and we've been listening to it for years.
