10:00 pm
and days. and finishing with a win for governor walker. now the battle began when governor walker proposed a law, stripping public unions, but not police and firefighters of their collective barg ang rights. you cannot forget the protests in the capitol of madison. now it's here, live in waukesha at governor walker's campaign headquarters and live at mayor barrett's headquarters. we have a jam-packed show for you. don't go away. reince priebus, and louisiana governor, bobby jindal, and minority leader, peter barca. but first, former alaska governor, sarah palin. good evening, governor. >> hey, greta. how are you, there? >> greta: i am very well. it's been a cliff hanger all day. nobody knew if it would be mayor barrett or governor walker retaining his seat. your thoughts on the news that governor walker is the winner?
10:01 pm
>> it is such good and encouraging news, gret a. it is good for the country because people are going to recognize through governor walker's efforts that austerity measures, responsible, austerit measures of reigning in government growth will help our nation with the economic woes that we face. this is positive news. i think wisconsin is living up to its state motto that providential motto of forward, moving forward. they will help to lead the charge for the country. reigning in government growth, allowing the private sector to be the ones to create the jobs. >> greta: tonight, governor walker celebrates. but tomorrow, he goes back to celebrating all the people, including the union members and the democrats who campaigned fiercely against him. so you have been in the chair. tell me, what does governor walker do tomorrow to begin reconcile or heal the people. they are very deep in this state? >> he keeps on coming on.
10:02 pm
he keeps showing through facts, through stats, through the numbers that they don't lie, that removing deficit spending and allowing the deficit to turn into a surplus, allowing the government to reign itself in, via legislative legislative andy measures so the private sector can grow, those numbers don't lie. he needs to remind the public of that. maybe not him, but somebody could curj the good union brothers and sisters there in wisconsin,s a say that a former wib sister. maybe it's it is union leadership there, those thug who is wanted to deceive their members into believing that growing government was the answer. well, perhaps it's the union leaders that need to be recalled and replaced with those who understand what perhaps a union role could be in state government. not a selfish role. not a role that allows government to continue to grow and create an insolvent
10:03 pm
situation for a state. >> greta: you know, it's interesting, we have spoken to him before the last year, during the protests, we have spoken to the governor a number of times since. we asked him, you know, what he would have done differently. he doesn't back off the policies, but he wished he had been a better communicator so there wouldn't be this divide. do you agree he could have delivered the message better so perhaps, he could have avoided maybe this recall vote? >> i think that everything that wisconsin has gone true in the last couple of years, greta, with the lawmakers skipping town, not doing their job and hiding out in another state, the democrats because they didn't want to face what governor walker was proposing. the supreme court proposed to change with processer's election there. and now with the recall election, i think wisconsin voters are sick and tired of the division that has been caused by the radical left again, saying
10:04 pm
it's big government growth that will be the answer to economic challenges. i think that the people will come together and continue now to lead the country in these measures that are just common sense. it is combs 101. live within your mean, you are fiscally responsible and that's how you will become success envelope a state, in a business, in a nation. this unity will happen under this good governor and lieutenant governor's watch. >> greta: i can hear the crowd roaring and i can see it on the screen did and i can hear it, we are right outside the headquarters, very happy governor walker supporters here in waquiche a. in 2008, president obama won by 14 points in the state. a very decisive victory, which you know better than anybody else. i am curious, though, whether or not the democrats here are bitter that president obama didn't help mayor barrett here?
10:05 pm
he had a chance last week when he was in minneapolis doing 3 fund-raisers and he flew over wisconsin. there were many months until now, he was a no-show. he has shown very little interest the race or perhaps he thought it was such a hot potato, he didn't want to be connected to t. i am curious what you think the democrats are thinking about the president's no-show. >> i think the democrats there understand that the president's no-show represents the fact that obama's goose is cooked as more and more americans realize that what wisconsin has manifested via this vote, embracing austerity and fiscal responsibility, is the opposite what have president ork 'bama and the white house represents today. they want to grow government. they want to take more away from the private sector and quash the entrepreneurial spirit and resource development opportunities from america, so that a centralized, growing government will take the private sector's place.
10:06 pm
wisconsin wasn't going to put up with that and the nation won't put up with that. so obama did have to distance himself from the solutions that walker and kleefisch and their administration represented. he had to stay away. >> i should notify, we are waiting for governor walker. he is inside the building. obviously, very happy with the news that broke just a short time ago that he has won this election. sewe are going to stand by and -- so we are going to stand by and take his speech. president obama didn't appear, but president bill clinton da big favorite among democrats. he was here, campaigning for the mayor on friday. did his presence here show up president obama? or do you think president obama sent him and the democrats understand this is politics and it wouldn't be good for the president to be part of a losing race? >> i think what a lot of us took
10:07 pm
from this that fiscal responsibility and austerity is solution. president clinton reminded people that he with the help with at the time, speaker gingrich and their efforts to reign in government growth and balance the budgets that that allowed deficit spending to be reined in. so the president couldn't recognize the solutions. he had a diplomatic, crafty, nice way of telling the public that what he and speaker gingrich and the republican majority in congress did in those years he was president is helpful, versus what -- what the recall activists were trying to prove in this wisconsin recall effort. >> greta: you know, it seems when something happens, the message will last forever. but november is 5 or 6 months off. a lot can happen. hard to tell, this is a burst of energy or for the republican party here in this state and
10:08 pm
governor walker, whether it is long standing up until november. lingering between now and november is the supreme court decision on health care. tell go one of two ways. either the president's way or not his way. if you have a reflection, if the president loses health care with the supreme court and has this to deal with, what does that mean? if the president wins health care and yet he loses tonight? >> i believe that the president will lose the health care battle in the supreme court. and obviously, he and his message, his mission, hes has lost here, which is a microcosm of america. so things are not looking good for president obama. i think it's important, not just hard-core republicans, but blue-dog democrat, reagan democrats and independents understand that really othat federal level, whether it comes to the presidential election, we need to apply common sense. not allow partisanship to get in the way of just -- electing
10:09 pm
people who will do what's right for the people and who understand what america's foundation is all about and that is about reward for work ethic and resource development. it is about the private sector's growth and electing someone who represents that. obviously, president obama doesn't represent that. he represents the opposite of that. and the numbers don't lie. his joblessness numbers represent that. people on food stamps, the numbers there represent that. the debt that is growing $4 billion a day, you should obama represents that. so the presidential election just hopefully, being a reflection of the people's acknowledgement that we need to apply common sense and fiscal responsibility, austerity, living within our means will get the economy back on track. president obama does not represent that. >> greta: i think that the trend is important. president had a very bad economy, but what's the trend? it is painful to the obama administration and more toso to the american people that the
10:10 pm
unemployment level ticked up a 10th of a percent last month, only 69,000 jobs created. manufacturing in numbers indicate it is sluggish. new home sales are sluggish. i think that's a problem for the president. and i saw a number tonight that the latino unemployment rate is at 11%. now, that's way above the 8.2% national. latino vote is supposedly an important part of the vote, this november, an influential block. that's the hidden factor in this, is that latino vote that. has to hurt the president politically. >> yeah, but i think, red and yellow, black and white, every american's precious and should be in the president's sight. doesn't matter, race or demographic represented in what these polls are showing. i think the consensus is, president obama has us on the wrong track.
10:11 pm
the numbers don't lie. the trend continues that is putting our economy in the hole. there is no plan to dig us out of the hole, via the obama administration. we still don't have a budget! 3 years later. he is not leading us to even have a federal budget? you know, he is immoaferl, unethical. it violates the constitution. no, i think people are going to say, enough is enough of this hope-y, change-y stuff that was nebulous, fake, hypocrital and we are ready to go in a different direction with a new leader of america. >> greta: i have been around the block and always surprised how things turn out. a lot can happen between now and november. right now tdoesn't look good for the president nterms of the trend. but it's five or six months off from now. i don't know what the trend is going to be. but i think tonight, the republicans have the wind behind their back her in this state. we are going to hear from governor walker. what should governor walker say
10:12 pm
when he comes out tonight? >> it is not just republican who is have the wind to their back. it's america as a whole. and the eyes of america have been on wisconsin. looking to see if governor walker would keep the resolve and the steel spine and recognize as his spine stiffens, the rest of us feel empowered. other governors across the nation are empowered and emboldened to do the right thing. so if governor acknowledges that, that, you know, it is the people who recognize and act on that recognition of the fiscal responsibility that they deserve, taxpayers deserve, he just was one to help administer what the people's will has been. it will be a humble, gracious, very appreciated message. >> greta: in terms of the governor, last night, i asked him, he was on with us here in wisconsin. i had seen an article as his name on the tick with governor romney. he said, no, no, no.
10:13 pm
it's my good friend, paul ryan, the congressman from the state here. he would be a better choice this. win makes him at least for the moment, a bigger influence in the party nationally. do you agree? >> i agree, gret a. i think anybody who is there in the arein aduking out on that platform of ideas and solutions that work and obviously, governor walker's solutions -- they're working. the numbers show he has turned a deficit interest a surplus. the unemployment rate has gone down. the private sector's actually been able to create jobs as he has reined in and cuts in government spending. those are the solutions that would do well on any national ticket. >> greta: any sort of feeling or sadness or empathy for mayor barrett. he campaigned his heart and soul and so did his supporters? it's always disappointing to lose. >> no, not an ounce of sympathy for someone who was trying to
10:14 pm
fool the public into believing that growing government is the answer to any of the economic challenges, in a state, in a state or in our nation. no. the people spoke. this is good news for all of america. >> greta: so tomorrow starts a new day here in wisconsin until the next election. it will be fascinating to see whether or not governor walker can try to unite these two sides. as i noted earlier, boy, these people are divided. this is not just a race for people who are ambivalent. this is a very strong, passionate views on each side. i don't know how he's going to do it? >> well, sure. you know, on wisconsin. forward is their theme. they will move forward and i think that naturally, they will unite when more of the numbers show that walker's austerity measures work for the people, for the taxpayers. what you will see come from this white house, in these ensui days, though, will be a
10:15 pm
diminishment of the election results. you know, the white house, jay carney -- can't wait to see highway he spin this is and president obama himself. they will try to distance themselves, despite the fact that they tleading their lap dogs in the leftist media, made this a front-page story for how many months? all we heard was wisconsin's recall effort and the democrat state lawmakers hiding out in another state and changing the supreme court and all of that. because fiscal conservatives won on all of those issues, this is a culmination of the victory of fiscal conservatives and healthworth, you will see obama and the white house distance themselves. >> greta: governor, one last quick question, i guess, we don't know the numbers are being counted right now. it could be a really close race or a blowout. we don't know, but if this is a close race, does it really mean much? if it's the same thing that got him elected 2 years ago?
10:16 pm
>> no, it does mean much. what you can read into, if it is a close election is that there is power in the special interests, in the tens of millions of dollars of taxpayer money that went into the recall effort of union dues that were wasted. so union brothers and sisters, recall the leadership. get some responsible leadership in there. what it tells you is that money does buy a lot of influence. i think that will be what you can attribute a close race to. i don't think at the end of the night it will be that close. >> greta: votes are still being counted. grvetion thank you very much for joining us. >> right on. thanks, greta. have a good night. >> greta: the entire nation has been and is watching wisconsin. they have watched it like a hawk. and after governor walker's win, what does it mean for 2012 in and what does the rnc think? is it evidence of the waning
