same way he will regret the idea about the private sector doing okay. if it is offensive, the idea that it would have been leaked when we know that in the report itself it quoted white house officials, then let him prove it by having a special counsel appointed. the key here is dianne feinstein, if she demands it, it will be done. >> so the other statement that charles alluded to was earlier in the day when president obama said in remarks that he hoped would move the conversation forward on how to fix the economy, did anything but. when he said essentially the private sector is doing fine. >> the truth of the matter is that as i said, we created 4.3 million jobs over the last 27 months. over 800,000 just this year alone. the private sector is doing fine. where we are seeing weakness is in our economy had to do with state and local

government. >> see, government romney want to seize on that opportunity? >> i would bet that he did. in fact, a few hours later he did just that he was speaking at a campaign stop and he just said that he was flabbergasted by that comment. >> is he really that out of touch? >> yes. >> i think he is defining what it means to be detached and out of touch with the american people. has there ever been an american president who is so far from reality as to believe in an american where 23 million americans are out of work or stopped looking for work can only find part-time jobs and need full-time jobs for the president of the jaghts to stand up and say the private sector is doing fine? is going to go down in history. it's an extraordinary miscalculation and misunderstanding by a president who is out of touch. >> that was a present for mitt romney who has largely been labeled out of touch rich guy with six houses.

delivering a president right to him. he has been criticized for making comments to fire people which may be out of context. did the president slip up and forget the word not in there or did he literally think that the private sector was okay? >> does he just not grasp what the private sector is? because clearly no one makes that statement if they have a concept of what the private sector is. >> at a white house press conference perhaps. did he he forget the word not or mentally shift those things around somehow. he had to walk that back later in the day and completely retailer that whole thing. take a listen. >> listen, it is absolutely clear that the economy is not doing fine, that's the reason i had the press conference. that's why i spent yesterday, the day before yesterday, this past week, this past month and this past year talking about how we can make the economy stronger. the economy is not doing fine. there are too many people out

to your definition and you have got a lot of them. >> so, employees at a bicycle shop considered green jobs. >> and somebody who drives a bus is a green job. you could be driving a toxic bus but if you -- i mean, you get vague and ambiguous. first of all you are not doing the whole purpose of going green. taking the social consciousness part of it out of it and this second of all. >> you are cheapening it. that's my gut reaction. >> not cost effectively using our money wisely. hired one person and let five go. pigeon hole all the rules and regulations that the green. that's stifling the work place right now is all these rules and regulations and green brought more rules and regulations than any of the other demographics. >> let me flip the other side and take the other position on this maybe this is great for small business. opportunity to get some money to get my business started to kick off something. can i get a little bit of money. a little bit of a grant from the government and actually get things going.

40% of the respondents want him to be the vice president. chris christie was number two but much further behind. interesting to me were the people not -- got like 2% of the vote. rob portman whose name has been thrown around. he is not on the list. people like bobby jindal who spoke at the conference, actually there, rand paul 8% of the vote. rob portman and virginia governor got 2%. interesting t. is interesting that they got 2%. they are often named as a safe choice. if mitt romney is going to stay in character and do the safe choice. somebody who won't upstage him but who he gets along with who he likes that's not hot audience wanted. they wanted a more bold choice. >> interesting name trickling out senator in new hampshire very solid background. some compare to sarah palin. they haven't done their homework enough yet on kelly

what's happening in the news. we now know police found a yellow matchbox car, a pair of boys underwear and boys blue shorts hidden in the new jersey home of pedro hernandez. he, of course, is the man who claims that he strangled 6-year-old patz in the basement of a new york city bodega in 197. the toy and clothing do appear to be from that era. they note that patz was wearing pants, not shorts on the day he disappeared. right now the only evidence against hernandez is his own confession and prosecutors fear that might not be enough considering his history of mental illness. well, talk about bad luck orlando man getting getting stuck with george zimmerman's old cell phone number. zimmerman, neighborhood watchman charged in the shooting death of trayvon martin. his phone number was featured in news reports 911 calls were

good news, at least on the outside it appears some good news regarding alzheimers and a possible treatment. you say not so fast. >> dave, we're always saying alzheimer's, we're so worried about it more than 5 million people have it in the u.s. we want a cure so badly that we jump. the media jumps and says here it is. this is very preliminary. what this is and it is exciting news is that they took skin cells and manipulated them into becoming cells that build brain tissue. almost like a sci-fi movie. in mice they were able to get these mice that had more brain tissue in the memory centers than they had before. i think that's astounding but that's far from saying we can now put it into people's brains and prevent alzheimer's. by the time we diagnosed alzheimer's it's pretty far along and a protein in there we can't get rid of. we have to diagnose it very early. which we're getting better at but against this is years and years away. >> meanwhile something exciting last weekend about a new cancer treatment they call

issues which getting public spending under control. >> when you look at this historically, is this one issue that you think can sway an election? obviously we talked about margaret thatcher but here in the united states as it relates to ronald reagan. just one issue of many or is this the issue that could really turn the tide. >> well, when jobs and the economy are the primary focus, people take -- tend to take a slightly more critical look at unions particularly public unions they have looked at that as unsustainable benefit. right now clearly we know that jobs and the economy are the big issue. the president talked about it yesterday. that's the overwhelming issue. if that's the case, then that sort of subissue of public unions and state and local spending and benefits, that's going to be a big deal. and that issue only works, i think to governor romney's favor. scott walker's victory could be the canary in the coal mine. his victory was larger than even his previous victory two years ago. if that's a bellwether that's an important one that the campaigns are going to look at. >> and talking about bellwethers, this has always been a democratic issue. these are the folks that come

out to vote democratic in the election mostly. and now you see this fracturing within the democratic party having to rely on looks lake other groups that is to say maybe the youth. obviously the youth vote came out very strong in 2008. but also latino vote. the latino vote in this country very now important to the democrats. are you seeing a total shift? almost a sea change away from unions as that ballot box marker? >> yeah. the coalition, the traditional democratic coalition minority voters, unions, other and other constituencies. the union part of it is important. the presidents that to rally that base. maybe the scott walker will rally the unions. it's a smaller base. even though they might be fervent still for the president. it's a much smaller base to work off of. same with the youth vote are they going to come out in the same force? that will be interesting. >> absolutely. see where democrats can get coalition back together. thanks for putting this on historical context. >> congratulations on your

for the economy? absolutely. if you take a step back and look at the bigger picture. there is a lot more employment growth than there is reduction. you see the same thing in the overall economy. we grew our employment 40% in the u.s. since the mid 1980 the. double the productivity rate. they grew at half the productivity rate and still only increase their jobs 15 to 20%. the productivity gains that you see actually accelerate. >> let's put it up on the screen and get to you respond to that. private equity good or bad for the economy. >> we don't have the graphic but can you take my word for it interestingly though to me is that you worked with mitt romney? i. >> yes. you worked with him. you saw him every day in this environment where the democrats argue that he would take these companies and saddle them up with debt. try to run them out of business. did you see something differential? >> that's just laughable. if i had gone into an investment, a credit committee

meeting and said here is what we are going to do is strip cost and sell this company in a matter of years. i would have been laughed out of the room. business is so much more complex than that the steps when we to take a to make a company stronger, more competitive, grow it faster. it took many years to implement that. the idea that it was short-term is almost laughable. can i tell that you mitt was almost exclusively focused on the long term. he always felt if we did what was right in the long run the short run would take care of itself. >> you worked with him 1993 to 2007. i'm interested in that in particular. we hear surrogates all the time. we don't hear people that know mitt. rerarely know people that know the personal side of mitt. when you hear him on the campaign trar i like to fire people taken out of context and i'm not worried about poor people. do you say to yourself this is not the mitt i know as a friend and business leader? >> well, a couple things. mitt wasn't a career politician. is he not as practiced perhaps as some people are in giving speeches and talking to the public. i saw him around the table

let me tell you how tough this guy is. let me tell you what this guy is doing. no other explanation for why the "new york times," for example, would have information that sources white house material and that describes things that happened in very closed meetings. but when you start leaking classified information that is a serious receivous preach. i will tell you why. if you go through the process of having a background check and swearing to get clearance. the process itself is very very thorough. and you know when you signed a documents and you take an oath that you are not to reveal that it's a pretty serious thing. they tell you all about what could happen to you if you reveal it. it's a big deal. as a politician of which you are. you worry about every word probably. >> is that a dirty word. >> i didn't want to call you a politician. >> broadcaster now. >> worse. >> all of the words that you say on a regular basis when you call a press conference, governor. >> yeah.

ability to go forward. this eric holder appointment of these prosecutors, ali, these aren't special prosecutors they report directly to eric holder. as pointed out earlier in the other interviews, regarding fast and furious, you can't to get the truth about that and i don't see the necessity and good. reminds move he casablanca, and they walk into the casino and say, i'm shocked at the gambling and they hand him the winnings. and what it means regarding accountability. >> john mccain and lindsey graham suggested, in a sense agreeing with yourself, that these are not independent special prosecutors, these are two u.s. attorneys and their statements on friday. >> right. >> my question for you, how high do you believe the leaks go? >> dave, this goes, i was on the hill yesterday talking to staffers about this, to congress persons. this goes at least to the national security level. and we're talking about senior

officials and i remember the general from the dni saying we need more polygraphs. these aren't coming from former operatives like me, these are from people leaking this for political benefit. let me be very, very clear here. people have died. they may not be american people, but al-qaeda, once the information was leaked how the underwear bomber was discovered, they purged their ranks. by doing that, dave, we have now left ourselves open in ways we have not been open since before 9/11, so, again, let me be clear, people have died here and this is the severity of this leak, plus, we talked about two weeks ago, the pakistani doctor who helped us get bin laden, we're hurting ourselves by not following good security practice and this is, this damage will go on, this will hurt us for years to come. >> alisyn: you're saying it will hurt us for years to come, but you believe it was done for political benefit. what do you mean by that. >> well, ali, local near term
