one hired guy former president bush. but not good enough. senator, thank you. >> thank you. >> greta: you want a special prosecutor, independent of what the attorney general has done to investigate the leaks. why? >> first of all, it's a special council to be specific. we need an outside investigation , clearly-- the attorney general of the united states is under considerable criticism and scrutiny over in the house, they are talking about citing him for contempt of congress. but more importantly than that, we need someone who is completely independent. we did that in various other occasions which were far more serious than this. the valerie plame investigation and others. when the democrats -- we have letters from then-senator obama
10:01 pm
and statements by then senator obama calling for an independent counsel or special investigation so it's clear that this issue is of transcendent importance. the director of national intelligence said, this is the most egregious breach of security and national security that he has seen in his 30 years as -- in the intelligence community. >> greta: it is bipartisan in the sense that there is horror or shock on both sides of the aisle. senator dianne feinstein, democrat, very concerned about the seriousness of these leaks. i mean, let me ask you, though, two people are appointed by attorney general holder. one was the united states -- with the u.s. attorney appointed by president obama and the other is the u.s. attorney from the district of maryland, appointed by then president bush. does the bipartisan nature relieve any of your thoughts? >> they still have to report to the attorney general of the

united states. they are not independent. it requires an independent look to have the credibility that's necessary. this is the most egregious breach of national security shathat i have ever seen. we are talking about ongoing, highest level covert operations, one on cyber warfare and one on drones. this requires the most objective and credible investigation. someone like bob bennett. he has done other investigations. and he is a democrat, as a matter of fact. but we need someone who is credible and someone who is truly independent. >> greta: how about speed, though? we get -- we get into these huge investigations, they go on for years and years. and become almost a shakespearean play developing here in washington, where people are pointing fingers. one of the things we need a swift decision. does going outside also, though, run the risk of being greater

10:05 pm
secretary of defense was at that time about the raid conducted on osama bin laden. and now we have additional disclosures of the most covert operations. by the way, our relations with the israelis and other nations has been severely damaged by these revelations. >> greta: two issues. one is whether or not it was leaked for political reasons. and the other is the leaks. and how damaging to our national security. in one of the article, david sanger talks about the cyber-worm which was supposed to infiltrate the iranian nuclear computer system for the power plant and disrupt it -- >> and it did. >> greta: and it did. it did. here's what's interesting. in a tense meeting in the white house situation room, within days of the worm's escape, mr. obama, vice-president joe biden jr. and the director of

investigation. but you know, whenever there are leaks in this town. and have you seen this before-- the first question you ask yourself and should be scg asked in the case of leaks -- who benefits? >> greta: or is somebody stupid? there is the stupid factor. did someone go and told somebody else who told somebody else, who doesn't get what national puter and classified means? >> who benefits. but in response to what you just said, in his book, mr. sanger said, several officials said that they wanted to remain anonymous because they would lose their jobs. so i think it's pretty clear here. >> greta: in fact, in the sanger article, it said none would allow his names to be used because the effort remains highly classified and part of it continues to this day. so the source knew it was wrong to be talking about it. >> a highly classified, going on to this day. one of the reasons why this is so egregious is these operations were going on and as far as i know, obviously, they for still going on.
10:08 pm
lives have been compromised. national security has been compromised. what has been the result? an estrangement between ourselves and our allirks compromised our meest highly classified operations and we have told the enemy what we are doing and over time, don't they feel then a license to sppd? >> greta: this computer worm that we developed, we developed it with the israelis -- >> that's the public's information. >> greta: according to the public's information. and the israelis who have been threatened by oi iran, ahmadinejad says he wants to wipe israel off the map. i am thinking for israel, maybe they could have developed it acomplon done it and perhaps feel more secure today. but by partnering with us, unless we are the lead partner, of course, by partnering up, this very important program, to this little country and to the world, has now been jeopardized.
10:09 pm
>> increases the vulnerability of the israelis because it gives the iranians another reason to -- make the declarations they do about israel. but also, if you are an israeli national security person or the prime minister, what about the next time the americans come to you and say, look, we want to partner in some very important and highly classified information. obviously, they are going to think twice. i know for a fact that they and other allies are enrage. >> greta: but it's more important, israel and iran. i have read many articles, if iran wants to go alone millitarily, they have a huge challenge to do the damage, return and refuel the nuclear sites are 30 feet be-- of concrete above t. so it's really a challenge. so they are -- this worm might be been a way to disrail it or inhibit the process for a number of years to come. so i think -- we don't have that

10:11 pm
information is about ongoing operations. it is one thing, as you have read woodward's books and other things that have been conclude. this is about two of our most highly classified, ongoing investigations. >> greta: what should be president obama's response to this? is there any role in president obama speaking out on this? >> i was curious that the president seemed to be more concerned about accusations of where the leaks came from than any concern about the fact that they happened. it's just -- it's almost stupefying that here he is, president of the united states, faced with two massive security breaches and his concern is whether it was leak from the white house or not. his concern should be what the leak was, who leaked it and what are we going to do to stop this kind of thing from happening in the future? by the way, they have gone after low-level operatives for leaks. now they ought to go a little
10:12 pm

10:13 pm
shows saying the only way to get an objective investigation is to have a special counsel. it is almost... well, i think -- it has traced of hypocrisy. >> greta: senator feinstein has not joined you in terms of asking for an outside investigation. do you have any personal confusion with her and asked her -- i know this is a very troubling leak to her? >> i think there is no doubt about senator feinstein's concern on this issue. she said in 11 years that she has been on the intelligence committee, she has never seen anything like this. i respect her wanting to wait and see what happens. but i also think that it is pretty obvious that the president and the attorney general don't want a special counsel. >> greta: that's a huge indictment of their motive. >> they have said they don't want one, that it's not necessary? >> greta: but the undercurrent
10:14 pm
is that it is a political leak and that they consider their political future or livelihood superior to national security, chiam sure they would deny vigorously. >> i upon sure they might and will. i will give them the benefit of the doubt. except the question has to be asked, why wouldn't you want the most objective, credible investigation to be conducted that would have nothing to do with the investigation since there are allegations that it's members of the administration who were responsible for the leaks? >> greta: correct me if i am wrong, this worm from iran, this is part of a program that predated president obama? it started in the president bush administration? >> that's what is in this book. i don't have -- i don't have that information. but i have no reason to doubt that. >> greta: not to give you any more ammunition, but it was never leaked until june of this year. >> there was the valerie plame affair, independent counsel was
