sick. they are on top of each other. 80 percent of the antibiotics we prescribe goes to animals. we get resist tant bacteria. e coli is the name of the bacteria we are talking about here. urinary tract infections urinary finkses 90 percent are from the e coli. studies have looked at the kinds of bacteria we are seeing on farms and the kind we are seeing with women 8 million of them getting urinary infections five times more resistant to antibiotics. we think it's because we are giving out too many antibiotics. >> it is strong resistant to antibiotics. they can't get rid of this. >> we have had these infections since the time of the ancient greece. it's only since the 20th century we had the antibiotics to treat them with. you can get rid of the things now. used to be you didn't know what

to do ointment or water and cranberry juice. now we have these antibiotics. they are becoming less and less effective because we are using them too much. 8 million women have urinary infections have a problem because 29 percent of them are resistant to the kind of antibiotics we use. >> we are pumping them up with hormones and pumping them up with antibiotics. should we cook it longer other buy organic meat? >> i think the key here is hygiene. you have to wash a lot take a lotter showers be careful of what kind of hygiene we use. especially if you are a woman. this is really important. we need to know these bugs are out there and becoming more permanent. we have to use antibiotics less. it's not just animals. if we take too many antibiotics growing bacteria are millions of colonies. they want to be resistant they want to live like anybody else. >> when you have a urinary tract

infection it is painful you want an antibiotic. >> take them early, too. if you are having the bernie urinary frequency go and see your physician get the antibiotic early but don't take it if you don't need it. >> the food industry is disagreeing with the researchers because they want to sell more chicken. they don't want us to say no more poultry. what do you think? >> um going to say we are using too many antibiotics with chicken period. they are right there is no roof. look at this this way. here is the bacteria saying ones we have. what do you think the reason is? we may not have proven this but there is a strong association here. >> one doctor disagrees with the study. this is what he says. these stewed des have nothing to do with antibiotics and poultry products and further changes to antibiotics used in poultry will not change the potential human health risks associated with these foodborne e coli.

>> my personal opinion is i disagree with that. not only that but i want the conditions to improve on the farms. we need to improve the chickens so there's less and less bacteria. our chickens raised on farms 80-90 percent of them are raised with bacteria. i think the bacteria can come over to humans. >> staggering. those numbers are high. >> what are you going to do with your family. you eat poultry? >> cooking poultry properly is key. the other thing you can do in summer is keep your food separate. the same place that you wash the chicken on isn't the plate you should serve it on. >> use common sense, people, right? >> wash, use separate utensils and plates use lie ysol to clea surface areas and be careful about contaminating yourself before and after you wash. good advice for us this morning. 25 after the hour.
