but we have a camera. they got a look at what the police chief described as a vexing problem, something he has never seen. a series of trip wires, hooked up to what appears to be incendiary devices, unidentified chemical, jars filled with ammunition rounds and what appear to be mortar rounds. there has been a discussion of sending aren'ts inside that apartment, possibly to conduct controlled detonations of whatever is inside that apartment. but police appear to be in no hurry to get inside that apartment until they really have a good plan for what they have inside and how they are going to defuse all of that. you heard the police chief talk about getting help from the feds to look at the pictures of the video from inside that apartment building and make sure they have a safe plan to go inside. they don't want to injure any personnel and cause further
1:01 am
destruction to property and something they clearly don't want to do is destroy an abundant supply of evidence inside that apartment. so what we are seeing from police, they have secured the perimeter around five apartment buildings in the surrounding real estate. we have seen a few police. but for the most part, they are only securing the perimeter. all the fire crews are gone. the bomb squads are gone. tactical police are all gone. they are keeping people from getting inside that apartment building, greta. >> mike, i read earlier that one of the neighbor who is lived -- or lives below holmes, last night she heard the music playing loudly, over and over and over again and she went upstairs and knocked on the door to tell him to stop playing the music, saw the door was slightly ajar and she almost went in. i wonder, you know, is that -- just think how lucky she is, if that door is booby trapped that she didn't walk in.
1:02 am
>> reporter: that's remarkable. possibly the music was intended to draw something inside the apartment. possibly the music was meant to set up an alibi if people said they heard music from his apartment, that could have been a distraction if he intended to get away at all. it's hard to tell what was going on in his mind and whether the music was on a timer through a computer, so many questions need to be answered, greta. >> mike, tell me a little about the area eye understand that the neuroscience building, the university of colorado is right near there. >> reporter: i don't know about the proximity of the university, but there is a high school nearby. what we have going on at the high school, for all the unfortunate people in the surrounding apartment buildings, that's where they are forced to seek shelt fer they don't have family and friends to go to. some people have been able to go to the high school and contact police and police have been taking them back to the

apartment buildings surrounding the one. the main apartment building, where the suspect lives, no one's allowed to go back to that building. but the surrounding area, some people have come and gone. we see people checking on lights and making sure that nobody's where they shouldn't be. >> have you heard any information from the neighbors? i realize that everybody's evacuated, but anyone who knows him? >> reporter: we are seeing through reports over the internet. you get back to the description of a quiet guy, didn't seem to get along with people, kept to himself. probably spent a lot of time in that apartment, on his computer, planning whatever he intended to execute, or what we know now he executed. >> we don't know why the batman movie, why midnight? why now? that's part of the investigation. but nothing dcialg that we can piece together tonight on that. >> reporter: nothing from here on the scene, close to the apartment building, greta.

>> thank you. more than a dozen victims were rush to the medical center of aurora. many are still being treated there. dr. joseph forester is the intensive care unit director. he joins us. good evening. can you tell me the condition of the patients at your facility? >> good evening, greta. we have a total of 7 patients that are in the hospital. three are on the floor, four near i.c.u., two are critical but they are all stable at this time. >> does that mean, if they are critical but stable, it is your professional opinion, assuming no unforeseen consequences that everyone is going to live who is at your hospital, is going to survive their injuries? >> that's always difficult to predict. but they are doing well. they are being monitored quite closely and we are very optimistic that they will do well. >> can you tell -- how close was
1:05 am
the gunman to the people? can you make any determination about that? >> we don't know exactly how close the gunman was to the individuals. we do know that there were a couple of different types of injuries that the individuals sustained, from a shotgun or from a rifle or pistol. but we don't know exactly how close. >> when did you first hear about the shooting? >> i personally heard about it early this morning. but they first arrived at our hospital about 12:20 this morning. and we had our on-sight trauma surgeon and intensives and the staff there taking care of patients, about 12:20 this morning. >> if the first patients arrived at 12:20, that moved quite quickly. i don't pretend to be a doctor, but i assume that's better in

terms of care and survival, if you have a serious injury and you get to the hospital quickly. >> yes. the police did an extremely good job of recognizing that there was significant injuries and bringing the patients to the hospital promptly and our emergency room staff and physicians who were on site were prepared and did an extremely good job of organizing their care in a very expeditious manner. >> is your i.c.u. filled to capacity? or cough taken more? >> we have a few more beds, but we were quite busy. >> i mean, that's another consideration, with all of these massacres, some of these hospitals are already filled or can accommodate just so many. in many ways, the colorado -- we are lucky there are so many beds and facilities in the immediate area. am i right? >> yes. we are a level 2 trauma center. so we are... we have the

1:08 am
injuries. but they did -- were very irritating. it's interesting, one of the people who you just interviewed made one of those canisters sound like a flash-bang type of device that police sometimes use to startle people they are about to run in and take into custody, which has a loud bang and an explosiveness that can cause a fire. >> well, i suspect -- i don't know -- i suspect whatever he did toss was an effort to further terrorize and disorient people to do greater damage. don't you assume that that was what the use of the chemical weapon was? >> yes. i think the chemicals disoriented and confused the people he was shooting at. >> what do you make of the
1:09 am
booby-trap in the apartment? or the suspected booby-trap? it is something they have seen, it is not confirmed it's an actual weapon, but it's suspicious. >> they are treating it properly with great difference, they have it surrounded, no problem. what's interesting, if holmes had been kill in the course of this shooting, which is a real possibility, he was wear ago that's why he was wearing all the armor and all, then nobody would have known about the booby trap and it would have been more likely the police going to his apartment might have opened up the door in the normal fashion without taking the precautions that they did because what have he told them about there being explosives in his apartment. and that would have created -- a lot more injuries. >> if you heard the interview that i just had with my colleague, mike tobin. there was a woman who lives beneath him who apparently he left music on and it kept repeating and repeating about
1:10 am
midnight. and she went up to tell him to stop doing it, saw the door open or ajar, thought about going in but didn't. and then called the police about the music. the police said, we are busy with a shooting and didn't immediately respond, obviously because they were dealing with the shooting. but she was another potential victim of this, if it's the booby trap like that. >> that's -- mike tobin's information was very important because if she had opened it up, depending on how much explosive material there is, in all the different bottles and canisters there, could have blown the whole building up and the adjacent building. the soda bottles and cans that there was material in could be fertilizer like the murrah
1:11 am
building and a trip wire and that could have an explosion that would -- cause great damage to the surrounding buildings and the people in the surrounding buildings as well as to the neighbor underneath. >> one of the more difficult things for people to understand is this mass murder occurred shortly after midnight and the movie theater behind me, the bodies were left inside until very late this afternoon, 5:00 this afternoon. >> right. >> that's done for an investigative reason, it was not? >> absolutely. it's a crime scene. and you have -- essentially, in that -- in that theater, 10 crime scenes, 10 bodies, they had to be photographed. any kind of surrounding evidence would have to be collected. remember, two or three years from now, should this come to trial, all of that is going to be extremely important in
1:12 am
showing that holmes -- what he did, what he created, that it took time and effort to do it, that he wasn't doing a spur of the moment nsome kind of insanity situation. so that was very proper and takes time. then today, the coroner will identify those bodies and will do toxicology to see what was in the gases that were inhaled by these people and take toxicology from holmes, the police will, the urine and blood, to see if he was on any drugs. >> well, i am anxious to find out. but he did make at this time statement, supposedly to the police, saying the apartment was booby trapped. im curious if he is talking to the police and if he made any statements to the police, but i assume we will hear that later. >> thank you, greta. >> straight ahead, he thought it was a prank -- until the suspect
