one thing i know for sure this election has a larger racial component than any election in recent times. famed pollster frank luntz knows more than i did about this and joins us tonight from milwaukee. welcome aboard, mate. glad to see you. >> thank you. >> before i get into race politics, frank gallup has romney over obama. did he get a bump with ryan or is the race as tight as it has ever been? >> three things have happened in the past 8 days. i have been to ohio, here in wisconsin, colorado and what i'm seeing is a newfound energy and passion behind the romney campaign. the crowds are larger. romney is a better candidate. he has captured some of paul ryan's optimism. second is that the republicans want to focus on economic issues but the democrats have been trying to pull it over to

medicare which you noted before. that is good for obama because the third point is that the american people we are only in august but the american people decided that barack obama cannot solve the economic challenges facing the country so romney and ryan want to talk about the economy. they rant to talk about budgets. and they would rather not be talking about medicare. two out of the three attributes it has been a good week for mitt romney and paul ryan. >> geraldo: the last time you were on program, frank, we talked and you said something that i found very startling that romney leads among white voters and every other racial and ethnic group president obama has the lead. is this really is it so stark this division between the republicans and democrats? >> well, it has always been that division. is white voters tend to vote republican. african americans latinos tend to vote democrat. no change between 2004 and 2008 and 2012.

the key vote has been the latinos because they are willing to change their vote. george w. bush did well among them. in some states got 40% of the hispanic and latino votes. right now, mitt romney is getting in the low 20s. and yet you look over the last 8 days and it is almost like every group has moved in unison three or four points but in an election this close three or four points matter and they moved away from obama and towards mitt romney. >> geraldo: is that because of paul ryan, frank. in. >> it is -- ryan is part of it. he is the catalyst. but when you look at it ryan only causes people to take a second look. i don't because i'm watching the advertising and i do think that obama has a slight advantage in terms of the messaging right now. i will tell you this. a slight advantage is not good enough when you have an economy of 25 million people unemployed. when you have got a feeling like things are getting worse in this country not better after four years of 8% or above unemployment. and so it is not that they are necessarily embracing mitt

fair to say getting out that all important latino vote that frank just mentioned especially in the sunshine state. what do you think? >> marquise rubio is a superstar. look, i first ha v. to admit i'm a little biased in the area. i'm a good friend of his and i think he is a spectacular member of the u.s. senate. paul ryan is another superstar. let me put a little secret your way. four years ago i was pushing hard for paul ryan to be considered for vp then. he wasn't as well known. he was much younger. i think paul ryan is the kind of person that you want in leadership positions. he would be a great vice president. he would be great. he would make the american people proud of h him. he would be a big contrast with what we have now. administration that doesn't know how to deal with the economy. paul ryan knows how the economy works. he is smart. he is sharp. he is serious. yet with a good sense of humor.
