3:00 am
bret? >> bret: tweets out there, thought there were more blue signs. it's about split down the middle. let's go to syndicated columnist charles krauthamm in washington. your thoughts on tonight's debate? >> at one point i thought they would use their mikes as weapons, and it would turn into the taiwanese parliament where you get fantastic fistfights. look, this was a tough fight. i think romney did about as well as he did last time around. he made his point. obama clearly had a good night, a much better night than the first night.
3:01 am
you know, woody allen said showing up is 80% of life. he was at the 80%. i think on points, if you were scoring it's on points, obama wins on points. and he made a lot of counter punches. a lot of accusations. he managed to get under romney's skin a little bit by referring to his wealth. he made $20 million a year trying to make $1 million by taxes but it's a way to say you're a rich guy. how will you understand the ordinary guy? i thought there is a point where romney did really well. and all of us agree that was on the issue on the failure of this administration. when romney went large, it did well. when he went small, i think obama got the better of him. there is one critical issue in this debate. the libya question. obama was at sea. he was asked about the
3:02 am
security in libya, and benghazi. he didn't try to answer because he had no answer. instead he went on about how we're going to catch these guys. romney, i think had a huge opening. obama ended by saying i'm offended by implication we'd mislead. the rhetoric was mislead? you sent out your un ambassador to mislead america on five television shows in one morning. implying it's about a video talking about a riot. there was none. there wasn't a video in this issue in benghazi. and then, there was one tactical error romney made which was he kept asking the president questions every lawyer knows you never ask a question for which you don't already have the answer in already have the answer in hand. that gave obama a chance to counterpunch. we've got candy crowley's intervention, which is essentially incorrect,
3:03 am
supportings obama on the transcript. he did not call it's a terror incident. there was a big opening that was missed. i think it was contaminated by the actions of the moderator. but again, on the big issue, on the big issue, i think romney could have scored he missed an opportunity that. is probably why, i think on points, obama came out ahead. >> charles, we've talked about libya quite a bit on special report. the president said tonight as soon as he heard that the benghazi consulate was attacked he was on the phone with his national security team telling them that-to-find out how it happened, and make sure that security was tight. and to get to the bottom of it. now, we hear intelligence, weeks later, they're saying was wrong. and that they blamed this anti-islam video the president saying it six times at the united nations. does that answer square and will the fallout from that be a problem for this white house? >> i think it will be a problem for the white house.
3:04 am
they've told untruths, fiction. the president perpetrated them on letterman. he spoke about libya in the libya in the context of the video when everybody knew it was not an issue at the time. so i think on the facts, on explaining libya, yes, it's going do be a huge problem, but it will be a huge problem in a few days. few days. right now in the context of the debate i think he got away with it because there was no actual response at the time on the stage. when you had moderator meeting in behalf of obama that, i think swung it in a way that was incorrect and unfair. >> bret: charles, thank you. >> pleasure. >> fox news teamed up with good folks at twitter to find out what you had to say about the debate. keeping tax on when the discussion on teenage triggered a big discussion on line. tonight's debate generated lots of conversation over the last 90 minutes. here are the three moments that peaked tonight.
3:05 am
first at 9:57 p.m., a question on immigration got the most tweets of the night, reaching nearly 110,000 in one minute. second getting tough on china pulled in 108,000 tweets. third, early on in the night, governor romney responding to a question about his tax plan generated 107,000 tweets. some of the hottest topics trending tonight, on the left the total volume of tweets throughout the entire debate, that number reaching 7.2 million tweets. of those four topics jumped first the economy with 29%, taxes was second at 18%, third was foreign policy with 16%, and finally energy and the environment with 12%. overall a big night in the online world. but the first presidential debate than still holds the record for most tweeted political event in history. you can still follow me and bret bret. when we come back, a final thought on the night. on the night. everyone has goals.

3:08 am
3:09 am
3:10 am
>> this was not what we predicted going in. my analysis was way off. so that is it for us here in new york. you can tune in on monday for the next debate between president obama and governor romney. you can go to boca raton, florida. >> much more coming up on the fox newschannel. "hannity" is next fold by" on the record." good night, everyone.
3:11 am
>> i am at the great theater the wynn hotel. and we had something remarkable happen. let's get a wide shot of this group. they have nef has seen more campaign ads than anybody in the state of america. how many are for barack obama, raise your hands? a lot of people. how many are staying with barack obama in 2012? how many of you switched and now supporting mitt romney in 2012? raise your hands if you are romney people. sean, we had a remarkable change. i want to know what changed the performance. >> forceful, and presidential. >> realistic. >> presidential and enthusiastic. >> our next president. >> dynamo winner. >> steady and articulate.
3:12 am
>> you vetted for owe obama. >> yes, i did. >> what is it? >> he seems on the defensive, and he is already ready to get a debate issue. >> you voted for obama? >> yes. >> he didn't deliver. he didn't explain anything. i can't take four more years the same. >> did you think obama performed well, yes or no? >> no. >> what's the issue? >> i think rather than defend his own record he attacked, attacked, attacked, and that's no way to win the presidency. >> it is meed yolker. what i said earlier, undecided. i was not undecided between obama and romney. i was undecided and quite a number of people i no i are in that category of the i was extremely favor whree -- favorably impressed. >> with mitt romney? >> yes i heard what i wanted
3:13 am
to hear. i heard you are going to take away taxes. >> i want to know one thing. how did ruth gator beginsburg get into the room? >> we as americans don't have to settle for what we have been going through. >> >> he missed it. he didn't answer the question. >> he was on the defense all nightlong. >> and we only got one question on libya of the he was on the defense about that. >> he lied about everything. he lied to get elected in 2008. that's why i voted for him. i bought it. and he lied about everything. he has continue come through on anything. >> i want to defend barack obama. >> he supports women's rights. i am concerned about them being stripped away. we fought so hard to get them and i don't want to go
3:14 am
backwards. barack obama supports women's rights. >> women are a huge part of this country. we are the bread winners in a lot of homes. we can't have a slick guy coming into office who based on his beliefs doesn't even believe women should work. >> is romney slick? >> no. >> is romney anti-woman this. >> you can have the final comment right there. >> i can't think of anytime or any place i have seen mitt romney say we are going back to the stone ages and we will make abortion illegal. i don't know where this came from. >> was romney -- did romney win your vote today? >> he did. >> this is as significant as we had in denver 10 days ago. this group really swung. we will find out late other in your show exactly what moved them. back to you. >> we will check in with
3:15 am
frk. frank another great job. we will check in with focus for this insight. and joining me now in the spin room, romney campaign senior advisor. >> sean, good to be with you. >> we will get to benghazi. we have videotape that proves the president lied and got that wrong. i would say this is a single -- mitt romney went through a single prosecution of how bad the last four years was. he talked about the cost of health care, middle class he said crushed under this president. we don't have to live this way. one in six americas are in poverty. the economy is slower this year than last year and the year before. the president's policies we tried them and they did not work. the last four years have not been good. he didn't reform social security or keep his promise on medicare. immigration, he didn't cut the deficit in half. he went point, by point, by
3:16 am
point and stayed on debate. >> it is how they are crushing. as he said the middle class in this country, falling wages. it is hard to find work. rising gas prices and rising food prices and they are caught in that as a result of the president's policies. but governor romney laid out his plan for changing that and a positive vision for moving them forward for 12 million new jobs to get us to a balanced budget to unleash energy in this country to expand trade. >> that was one of the points. the president said the increased production since he was president only on private lands. our own chris wallace fact checked it. >> he reduced it on federal land and stopped us from drilling on virginia. the more moratorium and he has not improved the pipeline. >> there was a couple other moments when he said $5 trillion in deficit.
3:17 am
this is after president obama was trying to lecture governor romney on the economics. five trillion in deficits that don't add up. balanced budgets when he went through balancing budgets and he was running the olympics and business. i thought it was devastating for the president. you can see it on the president's face. >> you can see it and the american people can see it. governor romney inherited a debt of $3 million. and when he left office there was a $2 million rainy day fund, a surplus. he herded 5.6% unemployment and reduced that to the people of massachusetts. household income went up $5,000 when he was governor. >> it was the first time governor romney said we have fewer americans working along with pointing out 23 million unemployed americans. he also said something was interesting. if we had the same labor
3:18 am
participation rate, real unemployment is 10.7%. we count those people we don't count anymore. >> for every new job being created under president obama during his time in office, six people have left the workforce entirely. that's not how you should bring down the unemployment rate. but that attributes, that and part-time jobs count. >> let me go to the time line here. very quick on benghazi. the president did mention terror in the rose garden. >> yes. >> the president did not say this was a terror attack. when he was asked on september 20th "i don't want to speak on something until we have all of the information." our intelligence knew that night it was a terrorist attack. on september 25th -- this happened on september 11th. he said "we are still doing an investigation." he would not admit it was a terrorist attack. >> so that same night he spoke in the well of the united nations that same day. he mentioned the youtube video
3:19 am
six times. he didn't call it an act of terror. he didn't say it was a terrorist attack. that was two weeks after the attack. his u.n ambassadors went on the shows and said it was a result of a mob reacting to the youtube video and his press secretary said we don't have the information to determine whether or not this was a terrorist attack. >> if we fact check this tomorrow night we will show you some of these cuts. it is going to become very clear that the president was wrong on so many pieces of information he threw out there tonight. thanks for being with us. >> thanks for having me. >> and coming up tonight we will go back to las vegas and check in with the focus group of swing state voters. live from the spin room, romney advisor, governor john sinunu is next. we will check in with ron williams and powers as this edition of hannity continues and the spin room. >> mr. president, the day after that happened flies to
3:20 am
las vegas for a political fundraiser and then to colorado for another event, another political event. i think these actions taken by a president and a leader have symbolic significance.
3:21 am
3:22 am
3:23 am
3:24 am
you said the day in the rose garden the day after the attack it was an act of terror. it was not a spontaneous demonstration. >> please proceed. >> i want to make sure we get that for the record. it took the president 14 days before he called the attack in benghazi an act of terror. >> welcome back to this special edition of "hannity" in long island, the site of the presidential debate. joining me from the romney campaign is the former new hampshire governor. fact check this tonight. in the rose garden, he was talking about september 11th, 2001. he doesn't talk about benghazi being an act of terror. we have the tape and then we will show the time line of other things. watch this. >> no act of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation. alter that character and clips in light of the value we stand for. today we mourn for more americans who represent the very best of the united states
3:25 am
of america. we will not waiver. make no mistake. justice will be done. >> the president was asked nine days later, he stated we will continuest to investigate this. and then he wentes on "the view" and if you watch in each case he was asked directly by joy behar on the" the view" if this was an act of terrorism. that was 14 days later. but watch this sequence as the refused totill tell the american people the truth. >> we don't know yet. we will continue to investigate this. >> hillary clinton said it was of terrorism. what do you say? >> well, we are still doing an investigation. >> the crude and disgusting video sparked outrage throughout the muslim world. >> he said that six times at the united nations. he did not say it, so the president got caught. >> he got caught. and she had no business doing
3:26 am
a realtime, if you will, trying to fact check because she was dead wrong. this president got caught tonight with a bunch of statements that weren't correct. he was wrong on the statement about the permit for oil. he was wrong on the statement about the permit for shale. he was wrong on coal of the he was absolutely deliberate in his dishonesty on this issue of when he acknowledged it was terrorism. how can you go to the u.n two weeks later and still be claiming six times it is the video, and then show up tonight and claim that you said it was an act of terrorism. >> sbt this an on go -- sbt this an on going pattern? fort hood you have people shooting up innocent people after they are screaming and they said it was workplace violence. the president early in his administration could not say thste words war on terror. they were man-caused disasters,e overseas contingency operations. what is the problem with this? >> the problem is this president lives in his own world.
3:27 am
he really does not in my opinion have a sense of how important some of these issues are. we lost an ambassador for the first time since 1979. and he is trying to say the only reason americans are concerned about it is because it is a political season? that's ridiculous of the the death of an ambassador is a criticalti item -- a critical issue.a policies that caused that are really to be condemned. failure to provide security is an act of negligence that is unconscionable. because hillary clinton tried to save him today by saying the buck stopped there, it doesn't stop there. the buck stops at his desk as harry truman told us. >> why did ambassador rice five days later go on five shows and say this was spontaneous, this had to do with the movie. this had nothing to do with a movie trailer released in july. to this day they are not telling us the truth about benghazi. >> no u.n ambassador goes on
3:28 am
five sunday shows without coordinating what they are going to say with the white house. she was out there at the white house's instruction to trys and really distract america from understanding that this president has not as he said a few days before that stopped terrorism. terrorism is rampant. particularly in north africa and parts of the arab world. he got caught. >> the other interesting thing tonight, and i thought -- it wasomney almost likeho a prosecuting attorney. he laid out the single greatestt concise indictment of the economic failures. one in six americans in poverty and 17 million more americans on food stamps. it was devastating. the president doesn't have a plan for the next four years. >> well, let me go back to the benghazi thing. >> do what you want, governor. i watched you with andrea mitchell. i am not going to argue. >> an interesting thing happened.
3:29 am
lyndsay graham sent a letter with john mccain pointing out that on june 6th a hole was blown. a huge hole was blown in the theraining wall of compound. that's the kind of act that doesn't go unreported to a white house. the white house has to hear that their embassy has had a breech in theee security. i don't know if it was a separate report to the president. i don't know if it was just in his president's daily brief, but i cannot imagine that was not sent to the president. >> governor, they were watching this according to testimony from the state department in realtime. >> on i the video link. >> yes. >> so they knew -- intelligence knew that night. the libyan president told us the next day. >> and the state department acknowledged that they never considered this to be tied to the video. they always because of the nature of the attack t treated it as an act of terrorism. >> peach now see the president was caught flat footed and lied and lied about the oil
3:30 am
drilling on the federal land issue. what is the fallout in the days following this debate? >> well, the romney administration has to do a good job in dealing with this. >> romney administration? >> well, i am anticipating november 6th. the romney campaign has to do a good job in dealing with this. they can't let the president and his campaign blurry that narrative. >> they are all out there spinning like a top. the word terrorism was in there, but they are not talking about benghazi. >> not even terrorism. good point. you are going to correct the record. i need to be careful with you.ot coming up next, we head back toxt las vegas where the focus group of undecided voters are standing by. they dialed some of the key moments of the debate and the results are very interesting. one of the best lines was governor romney saying we don't have to live like this. and then we are joined in this
3:31 am
special edition of "hannity." >> i spent my life in the private sector. i know why jobs come and why they go. they are going now because of the policies of this administration.
3:32 am
3:33 am
3:34 am
3:35 am
mr. president, have you looked at your pension? >> have i to say -- >> mr. president, have you looked at your pension? >> i don't look at my pension. it is not as big as yours so it doesn't take as long. >> let me give you some advice. >> i don't check it that often. >> look at your pension. you have investments in chinese companies investments outside the united states. >> wow. checkmate again. welcome back>> to this special edition of "hannity." we are live where the second presidential debate concluded a short time ago. by the way, a cbs instant poll came out on the che and it shows romney won tonight
3:36 am
65-35. for more instant analysis, we head back to las vegas to check in with our very own frank and his group of undeciderod swing state voters. they are at one of my favorite places, the wynn, las vegas. and frank you are being very nice tonight to everybody there. i am very proud of you. >> shu, sean. by the -- thank you, sean. if anybody wants to participate in these groups go to lnz global.com and they can. you heard he had it 2-1. how many thought barack obama won the debate raise your hands? how many thought mitt romney won the debate? they are using these dials to react on a second by second basis. the red line is swing republicans and the green line swing democrats. taxes, barackf obama performed particularly well. let's take a look, and then i will ask this group why romney had the advantage on tax policy.
3:37 am
>> i want to bring the rates down. i want to simplify the tax code. i want to -- get middle income taxpayers to have lower taxes. the reason i want middle income taxpayers to have lower taxes is because middle income taxpayers have been buried years.e past four you have b seen as middle income people in this country incomes go down $4,300 a family. even if gasoline prices go up $2,000, health insurance premiums up $2,500. food prices are up. utility prices are up. the middle income family in america have been crushed over the last four years. so i want to get relief to middle income families. >> what was it? what was it about that. it was one of the rare moments when republicans and democrats agreed. why? >> i am convinced people understand mitt romney wants to help and not hurt job creators. that may be one of the most important issues in this election. >> she talking aboutto tax policy and for you it is an
3:38 am
economic issue? >> it is. i am not a job creator, but for me to have our country move forward and get back to the good times we need our job creator and create jobs. >> a middle income american will not benefit one nickel if mitt romney pays half of the taxes or double the taxes. the issue is leaving funds in the hands of the job creators and obama is in fantasy land in that regard. >> bi-looring the taxes for -- by lowering the taxes for everybody it allows the money to go back into the economy and it stimulates growth across the line. >> i want to compare this to what barack obama said on tax policy.x you didn't feel as favorable to that. let's look at the dow scores for president oba on taxes. >> my philosophy on taxes has been simple, and that is i want to give middle class families and folks who are striving to get into the middle class some relief. they have been hit hard over the last decade. over the last 15, over the
3:39 am
last 20 years. four years ago i stood on a stage like this one and i said i would cut ks tays for middle class -- cut taxes for middle classt families by $3600. i said i would cut tacks for small businesses who are the drivers and engines of growth and we cut them 18 times. >> you know, frank, i want to add to this because this is the fundamental question. governor romney tonight said a couple things that really i thought were devastating to the president. it is an indictment of policies. we don't have to live like this, $5 trillion in debt it doesn't add up, $16 trillion national debt. obama said about george bush's $4 trillion that it was irresponsible, unpatriotic and that was over eight years. he said we are on the road to greece, romney said. i balance budgets my whole life. he went on to say that you got your chance. he talked about the middle class being crushed under obama. one in six in poverty and 17
3:40 am
million more americans on food stamps and 47 in total -- 47 million. and the economy is slower this year than last year and the year before. i thought it was a devastating indictment. i want to know what thehe focus group thinks. >> and i want to add one more. how many w were unemployed or had an immediate family member unemployed over the last four years. raise your hands? >> this is significant. which one connected to you on the points that sean just mentioned in terms of the chick chick -- the economic difference? which of those two e this. >> i think romney because of his position on helping small businesses primarily and seeing that he is really strong about creating jobs. >> i agree. romney sounds intelligent when he talks about business. he understands what a businessman needs. >> he is a businessman. he has proved that he is one. he hasve done very, very well jie. obama talked about giving a tax cut to 95% of americans. i did not get one penny tax
3:41 am
cut. but when romney talked about eliminating dividends and interest income tax, that will benefit me. it will give me more money to spend. >> you can have the last word. >> they are both y talking about the economy for middle class and everything. i am concerned about the quan day tiffm easing where the fed is pom -- pumping $40 billion a month into the economy and it can cause hyper inflation that will kill your savings account, everybody here. >> remember, sean, that this is one of the highest unemployment states, if not the highest in america. more ads have aired in the las vegas area than any other city in america. and these are electric for rail votes -- electoral votes. if any state mattered in terms of this debate it is this one. tell america, shout i at out who won this debate. >> romney. >> big night tonight for governort romney. i believe in the days ahead with all of the fact checking that will take place on benghazi and on drilling and
3:42 am
on federal lands, it will be probably bigger as people get more informed. we will have a special fact checking edition at 9:00 eastern. coming up tonight as we continue from the spin room, reaction from the left. we will check in with williams and powers. they will join me from here. when we come back, the louisiana dworcher is here -- governor is here as the debate continues. >> we are going to bring the pipeline in from canada. how in the erld president said no to that pipeline i will never know. this is about bringing good jobs back for the middle class of america. that's what i'm going to do.
3:43 am
3:44 am
3:45 am
3:46 am
i think you no know these last four years were not good as the president described, and yound don't feel you are confident the next four years will be much better either. i can tell you that if you were to elect president obama you know what you will get.
3:47 am
you will get a repeat of the last four years. we just can't afford four more years like the last four years. he said that by now we would have unemployment at 5.4%. the difference between where it is and 5.4% is 9 million americans without work. >> welcome back. joining me in the spin room is romney surrogate, bobbie gindle. i thought this was a prosecutor po nie t by point by point. you made promises promises and said you would cut the deficit in half. devastating. >> absolutely.e the president must have drank all of the red bull and caffeine they could find in the white house, but it doesn't make a difference. you can combine the speaking skills of ronald reagan and 8 abraham lincoln and winston churchill and it is not enough to defend this record. the biggest problem for obama
3:48 am
is making promises. cut the deficit in half, didn't half. said he would cut health care premiums $25 and it didn't happen. gas prices have doubled. he didn't spend one minute talking about new policies for the next four years. four years it was hope and change. now it is destroy, attack, divide, lie about governor romney's record. >> this affects your state of louisiana because the earlier part of the debate they talked about energy. energy production is up in large part thanks to north dakota and private lands, but the president tried to say in my administration they are up and leases are down 50%. >> absolutely. look at offshore leasing activities and thisy can -- i have almost canceled more leases than sales. you look at offshore permitting down by half in many cases. you look at the keystone pipeline. he said look at all of the pipelines we built. they only approved it from oklahoma to texas. somebody needs to buy him a map and show him how many states are between oklahoma and canada.
3:49 am
don't send your oil to the gulf coast. send it to china. he singled out the oil and gas for higher taxes. this is a president where every chance he has he has not embraced it. >> this president is not used to being questioned. he has had a phony media, and i don't think they have served him well. he has a hard time. he did not like it. he. was visibly angry and fighting for time. and then except on benghazi and then let's move to the next question. and thanks for distorting the story. >> he never -- he responded so poorly to criticism. the moderator was wrong on this. the administration has offered three different explanations and in theer days after the attack they said it was about the video. the president himself went to the u.n six times and cited that video. they say it was not a premeditated attack. rice said it was about the video. >> the president himself went
3:50 am
on "the view" 14 days later on the 25th and said he was asked directly was this terror a? we are investigating it. and then they said, maybe it was spontaneous. their third explanation was there was no protest about the video. instead it was a premeditated attack. the reality 1* he owes not only a explanation, but the truth. >> he also owes an explanation hown additional resources were requested and not provided. >> what makes this worse in my opinion is we knew in realtime. we had testimony by charlene, i forget her last name from thete state department. they were watching in realtime. the intelligence community knew in 24 hours. he is saying to the american people he didn't know? i don't know what is worse, not knowing or lying. i suspect he did know. i suspect twos a cover up. i suspect there is probably going to be a revelation at some point down the line. in the next three weeks? i don't know.
3:51 am
>> secretary clinton takes responsibility. president obama tries to catch up with her today. four years ago she made a powerful ad saying will he be ready for that 3:00 a.m. phone call? we may be learning that right now. >> i think glad things are going well. what is the unemployment there? >> we have been below average every month. we are actually one of two states this the south. we have more jobs than before the recession ended. >> and coming up, we will check in with teche liberal side as we check in with kirsten powers as we are live in the spin room for the post debate analysis straight ahead.
3:52 am
3:53 am
3:54 am
3:55 am
in the last four years you cut permits and licenses on federal land and federal waters in half. jay thought true, governor romney. >> how much did you cut?cu >> not true. >> by howal much did you cut then? >> we produced more oil -- >> how much did you cut licenses and permits on federal land and federal waters. >> governor romney, here is what we did, there were oil companies -- >> i had a question and the question was how much did you cut them by? how much did you cut them by? >> i am happy to answer the question. >> the truth is they did cut leases as our own chris wallace fact checked. earlier tonight president
3:56 am
