22 deaths. the cdc is expecting new numbers about the number of flu cases school wide. >> a shooting in california. a 16-year-old student walked into the high school with a shot gun and opened fire. one student was critically wounded. a teacher is being hailed as a hero for helpling get students out of the door and for getting the shooter to stop. >> young man living in the state of minnesota actually was using a social security number. what was really interesting is doing further checking on his life he had the state date of birth as a boy who was missing back in 1994. the accused gunman was targeting two classmates he claims had been bullying him. he is now in custody. a judge ruled there's enough evidence to hold james holmes on 66 counts of murder and tame presidented murde -- attempted

murder. holmes is accused of opening fire in aurora, colorado last july killing 12 people and injuring others. more problems for boeing dreamliner. a japanese airline while an engine oil leak was found on another jet. they will reportedly hold a press conference today to address electrical issues with the new 2011 plane. president obama nominating jack lew to be the next secretary of the treasury. the president said it almost didn't happen when he saw what would be the new signature on the dollar of the wallet. i considered rescinding my offer to appoint him. jack assures me he is going to

an agenda to attack the second amendment while claiming no policy's proposals would be prejudice. they spent time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners honest tax paying hard-working americans. the nra won't have to wait long to find out what the group's recommendations are. because he's promising to have them out by the beginning of next week. oo eye promised to have it to him by tuesday. doesn't mean it's the end of the discussion. the public wants us to act. >> president obama could use an executive order to restrict weapons in the country. intense arguments lies heyed. >> we still live in a democracy in this country. after next tuesday the fight will move from the white house over to capitol hill.

points yesterday. futures indicating we mrv another strong day in washington -- i mean new york. never have a strong day in washington. we will have opening day until 9:30 this morning. 401 k is doing pretty well. today you can thank the chinese. don't always thank the chinese. >> things are lacking good on the other side huge rounds of layoffs on top of morgan stanley announcing layoffs and there are big issues with the economy when the finance hal companies start saying we have to scale back. >> one reason the banks aren't making the kind of money the way they used to make money. they used to charge you and me a lot on credit cards venl they are cutting back. more than stanley laid off 1600 people. morgan stanley said they would layoff 1500 people. changes in the way credit card companies as well as banks can make money. wells far -- wells fargo talked

gallon of gas. if it's accurate that's going to put $205 back in the pocket of most americans. >> always love having you here. patti ann, what do you have going on over there? >> it is time for the first degree weather update with janice dean. >> good morning patti ann and heather. we are looking forward to the weekend. in some cases we are going to see record setting temperatures across the eastern half of the country pushing 60 degrees. that is pushing over the ohio valley and the great lakes. we have several reports of tornadoes yesterday around this time. we have a storm brewing here that will be 6 to 12, even 18 inches of new snow. great news for this year. you can see a real divergence

between the much cooler air across the rockies and warmer air across the south and eventually pushing across the eastern coast. we will continue to watch that and bring you the lathes. winter storm advisory for many states as this new storm system pushes through. we have freezing rain watches and warnings over these areas of minnesota wisconsin, u.p. travel could be close as possible if you take the wrong road. it will be a real problem for the folks in the upper midwest. we could see on order 1 to 2 to 3 inches of rainfall as the next storm system moves in. as i mentioned ladies you could see 6 to 12 even 24 inches of new snow across the northern rockies and plains. i know you are here you are out in montana you are like where is the snow? >> i was just saying that janice. >> keeping an eye on this snow for you. 2 feet that's a lot. it is time to brew on this.

>> we are in the middle of a flu blown flu epidemic the worst season in five years. they are stopping short of declaring a public health emergency as we have seen in cities like boston. hospitals are seeing 5 percent increase in cases where people are experiencing flu like symptoms. we don't normally see this many patients this early in the season. it usually hit mid winter. here is the health commission. >> hn 3 which means severe cases. >> the state is reportling 19,000 confirmed cases of the flu. we are told by the state health commissioner two resulted in pediatric deaths.

it is time for a look at whose talking. students at a south carolina high school were stunned as an english teacher stomped on an american flag during class. >> the teacher who stom presidented on it as part af supposed lesson said the flag was just a symbol. a spokesperson for the school says the act was repeated in several classes. last night one of the students in the class went on the record with greta van susteren to describe what happened. listen to this. >> well, he was teaching about symbols and he gave us examples such as a cross symbolizes christianity and then he took the flag and he said that it was just a symbol of america it was a piece of cloth with colors on it and through it on the ground and stomped on it. >> what was the reaction of the students in the classroom? watching or any one say anything to him? >> yeah, we were all very

shocked. he even made a comment afterwards. he said at least we reacted better than his other class. he had a girl scream in his other class. >> no surprise there. the man who was sitting just next to the young lady that was her father. he said that when he heard what happened he immediately sent an e-mail to the school district. he heard back from the school superintendent that said he was unaware of the situation supposedly. as we are learning the teacher has been punished. the spokesman for the lexington richland school district mark bounds is also talking this morning. here is what he told greta last night. >> i can't give you specifics because the superintendent is going to recommend the teacher be terminated. the teacher may have legal recourse. upon hearing this we conducted a full investigation and put him on leave. we wanted to make sure we heard all of the facts. the facts substantiated. he took the flag off of the wall

kidnaped by his grandparents nearly two decades ago has been found in the state of minnesota. he is now 24 years old he has been using a name that his grandparents gave him. cops were finally able to track him down after all of these years by using his social security number that was given to him by his stepfather just last year. >> young man living in the state of minnesota was using the social security number. but what was really interesting is that doing further checking he had the same exact date of birth as the boy who was missing back in 1994. >> thank goodness they hadn't given up on this case. no word yet if landers grandparents will face charges. cops say they took him the grandparents did during a custody battle between his parents so many years ago. >> we are learning more about the reason nfl linebacker junior s saou took his own life.

gun control. >> there has to be common ground to not every problem but diminish the probability that what we see in these mass shootings and occur. >> the white house mhas made no secret of the fact the president wants a new ban on assault style weapons in the wake of last month's school shooting ram tpa in connecticut. after that he may try to clamp down on gun ownership through executive action whether congress agrees or no. pro second amendment group are focusing on mental health issues and role of violence in the media. the nra walked away disappointed and others who attended a closed door session say the white house agenda was pretty clear. >> we have the opportunity to speak. at the end he choose to focus on our differences.

this was the scene of the deadliest attacks where 81 people were killed in bombings. a sunni group claimed responsibility for the attacks. greece the staggering unemployment rate has gotten even worse. it hit a record high of 26.8 percent in october. more than 56 percent of greeks age 16 to 24 are without a job. greece is heading into the 6th year of a recession. england, we don't know if prince and dutches are having a girl or boy yet but we know their bundle of joy will be a prince or princess. queen elizabeth issued a formal decree giving the title to all of the children. >> the massive flu outbreak could lead to shortages of the flu out vaccine.

sherri is live for us at the washington hospital center in dc with the details. we thought there was enough but it turns out that may not be the case. >> that's right, heather. in fact most of the vaccine that is available has already been shipped out. that sort of caused a bit of a panic i think through out the country. here hospitals are swamped with the number of flu cases. dc is reporting more than 300 cases so far. that tripled the number for all of last season. maryland and virginia are also seeing widespread levels. that has caused a run on the flu vaccine. doctors offices clinics and pharmacies are running short. some don't have vaccine at all. cases began showing up in this area back in october. now the flu is spreading fast. people are trying to find the vaccine anywhere they can sometimes going to three or four places before they can find it. some of the cvs pharmacies were out in our area.

the minute clinic inside that store did have some vaccine available for patients. is 20 million doses have been given nationwide. some of the healthcare providers tell us they are expecting more vaccine but perhaps not until monday others aren't sure they will be able to get it at all. those shortages are sporadic than some of the other retarryls. they might get more in the next day or two all they can tell people is keep checking back. that's the latest in dc. back to you. >> we are expecting more information-coming out from the cdc later today. >> image looking out your backyard to see this. it is a mass waive and look at the color of it. it's red. >> that is a bizarre photo. >> a pen that makes any water safe to drink. wait until you see this incredible gadget and the other top travel toys coming up. check in with steve doocy.
