responsibilities . nurses have responsibilities. nurses have been driven this by the government and a badge of shame for the never taken strike action before. and for patients this is going to be devastating to news. nurses don't want to on strike . a government adviser on strike. a government adviser on immigration has warned against proposals to reduce the number of international students coming to the uk warning . it could to the uk warning. it could bankrupt universities . the prime bankrupt universities. the prime minister is considering rejecting foreign student admission to top universities and cracking down on the number dependents they can bring with them . it's after net migration . them. it's after net migration. the uk reached a record a million in the past year. the uk reached a record a million in the past year . the million in the past year. the foreign secretary has announced a new support package for ukraine as the country is still blackouts after the latest round of russian airstrikes . during of russian airstrikes. during his first official trip to kyiv
8:06 pm
james cleverly pledged 35 more emergent c vehicles , a further emergent c vehicles, a further £3 million to help rebuild the country . similarly, i it's country. similarly, i it's incredibly important that the uk demonstrate rates to the ukrainian people who are bearing the brunt of this brutality from russia that we are standing shoulder to shoulder with them through our military , through through our military, through our humanitarian support , our humanitarian support, through our economic support , through our economic support, but also through the visible support and to the world. now, the second half is underway at the second half is underway at the elbe to stadium in qatar, where england is facing the usa in second round of the group stages . but that kind of figure stages. but that kind of figure , a lot used . the school is , a lot used. the school is currently nil before the match. they were jubilant scenes with england fans confident they'd win and get through to the knockouts . we're going to win knockouts. we're going to win two one but we are going to win
8:07 pm
anyway three no three one. we played many teams smaller us and struggled and have got a lots about them but really with family quality we've we should be getting out of the group we win this game quite confident i can't lie i think optimistic yeahi can't lie i think optimistic yeah i think i've met quite a few american fans are feeling quite confident too. i'm not quite confident too. i'm not quite a tournament overall quite sure a tournament overall if we can make out the group. who knows what can happen and we'll update you on that score . we'll update you on that score. you're up to date on tv, online and db plus radio. this is gb news. it's back to the friday night feast and. patrick let's get stuck straight in, shall we, people? it's difficult enough to get adults the appointment at the best of times, it might get times, but it might about to get a worse because gp's a whole lot worse because gp's have to change working have voted to change working hours from 9 am. to 5 pm,
8:08 pm
reducing the time that surgeries are open by up to two and a half hours a day. the vote comes in a week when it emerged that just one in eight gp appointments are carried in—person at some practises in england. we now need to wait and see whether the nhs will agree to change the opening or should it be really closing hours . to discuss this, closing hours. to discuss this, i'm joined now by dr. rachel ward and dr. gary bartlett will go head to head here. doctor versus doctor like to pit them against each other. dr. gary, i'll start with you. many people think that, frankly gp should be working harder, not hours, at this particular national health crisis . yeah mean. hi, kate. crisis. yeah mean. hi, kate. good evening, crisis. yeah mean. hi, kate. good evening , everyone. i crisis. yeah mean. hi, kate. good evening, everyone. i mean , good evening, everyone. i mean, we are already working absolutely flat out at the moment their demand on the is absolutely huge . there's big absolutely huge. there's big pressure at the moment and my typical my working day starts about usually around 830 and i normally don't finish about half
8:09 pm
six, 7:00 in the evening . and six, 7:00 in the evening. and although reducing of surgery hours an idea would be great, but the demand , the service is but the demand, the service is just absolutely huge the moment. there's already a shortage of gp's, so yeah, i don't really i'm not sure how to do that onto that. some people would say you should just work out and fight till all of six. is this area work a lot longer than that for a lot less money? dr. ward, i'll throw some people throw over to you some people saying me out on this. saying and hear me out on this. dr. , is fault of dr. rachel, it is the fault of female gp is because well, according to various different sources, all they want, they want a family want if want more of a family life some that's unfair. life is that some that's unfair. so first of all, i need to find out the details where gary's working, because if he's doing 36, 30, i'd love job there. my day is 12 to 14 hours now. let's let's first of all, get facts right. this is not about reducing you know, we're not talking a 9 to 5 job. general
8:10 pm
practise is not going to be a 9 to 5 job. it's about availability appointments during those times because at the moment, what we're seeing is that we are delivering gp appointments than . in october we appointments than. in october we delivered . 32 million appointed delivered. 32 million appointed in some general practise which is the record number. so this is not about access general practise. we have the best practise. we have the best practise by heart. it's about capacity . we do not have the capacity. we do not have the capacity. we do not have the capacity 0. dr. gary, it looks like i'm stuck with you for a little. dr. gary bartlett, the did you really go into medicine into being a gp let's be honest, was it, was it a bit more for the money or was it to look after patients . oh i think it's after patients. oh i think it's tough age to look after the patients. of course . i think patients. of course. i think when your time to medical school , when you're sort of 17, 18 years old, you the last thing you think about is, is the money that that you're going to be earning you go in there, you certainly go into profession certainly go into the profession for care. i think
8:11 pm
for patient care. and i think the of hours i do it if the amount of hours i do it if you broke it down i think actually i've worked a lot of hours hours how many days how many days a week is gary typically general general practise is a seven day, seven day. for so personally , me day. for so personally, me personally, i will work anywhere between sort of five, five days, six days sometimes. i've been out of work seven days a week, sometimes , and that's about as sometimes, and that's about as general practise areas that it's no it's not a 9 to 5 service. a half service isn't 9 to 5 service that just occur to me that demand for appointments is actually determined. okay. dr. rachel, do you think that patients have right, though, to be angry because the optics of this are terrible we've got record numbers of people waiting for routine treatment. so i appreciate not all of that is to do with gp's at all but is the health system as whole. and i think a lot of people are shouting at tv screens going shouting at the tv screens going come get to work . i
8:12 pm
shouting at the tv screens going come get to work. i think come on, get to work. i think people have an absolute right to be angry . don't be angry at the be angry. don't be angry at the people who are harder than we've ever to be. angry at the ever worked to be. angry at the government who have run down the nhs the last 12 years. we have 7000 fewer gps than when the conservative government left manifesto. why is that? that why is that ? why is that? because is that? why is that? because then i've got to just out dr. rachel by saying not of that can be in terms of the conservative government just purely because i mean we had net migration figures yesterday 504,000. i mean growth is growing much more rapidly than we can stock up our pubuc rapidly than we can stock up our public services non—stop, something do with it don't do thatis something do with it don't do that is falling. the number of gps is falling because the job is unsustainable and so people are leaving the profession they're leaving the nhs, they're stopping doctors because government i think that cut out before . but what we're facing is before. but what we're facing is a situation i will do 50 appointments in a day to
8:13 pm
recommended 1125 by taking risks every day. i'm not going to keep doing that. i'm just going to ask you both the same question. i've literally seconds with i've got literally seconds with each you, but it's of each of you, but it's kind of a yes dr. gary if they yes or no. dr. gary if they reduce the tax bracket for the higher earners meant that you didn't lose an absolute shadow of your income. if you worked overtime, would you be inclined to work more overtime ? yeah to work more overtime? yeah perhaps i would be, yeah . to be perhaps i would be, yeah. to be a yeah . as you say, we've got a yeah. as you say, we've got medical indemnity fees. hmrc fees to pay. we do pay a of money just to be doctors as well. dr. rachel asked same thing for you. i mean this is one of the things about gp's overtime before jeremy corbyn even more as well. to be fair. realistically, if that tax bracket was i want to know what would you say shrunk because there was less tax for overtime. would you be inclined to do a bit more. i presume you're talking 45% tax bracket. the answer is no because i'm nowhere near paying that. so it affect me. okay, enough . all
8:14 pm
me. okay, fair enough. all right, both of you, thank you both. very much. shares. both. thank very much. shares. that was dr. rachel dr. that was dr. rachel ward and dr. gary bartlett to toe. gary bartlett going toe to toe. well i say well not really. i say i was going to toe toe with them going toe to toe toe with them over not should, over whether not gp should, you know, work little bit hard. i'm delighted say that joining delighted to say that joining me in between in the studio between now and olympia impressionist francine lewis and comedian charmaine davis. thank you very much . davis. thank you very much. right, francine, i could see you shaking your throughout the course. was your take on course. that was your take on the fact that doctors want to work oh i could go on work 9 to 5. oh i could go on ages, but i won't. but seriously i can't even get speak so a i can't even get to speak so a doctor, alone see a doctor . doctor, let alone see a doctor. i the reception of i mean, the reception of ruthless , they say, is serious . ruthless, they say, is serious. you know, go to a&e or , call you know, go to a&e or, call one, one, one, and when you do get to speak to a doctor over, obviously zoom, they won't they won't speak to any other way it's always video call . it's it's always video call. it's always a different doctor. i mean , ago we got to see the mean, ago we got to see the doctor . we knew they knew your doctor. we knew they knew your medical history. it's impossible. these and i think it's absolutely so follicle
8:15 pm
what's happening because scary if you're ill what do you do you cannot get see a doctor these days and a really tough one charmaine isn't it because i've never saved a life i'd be terrible in a life death situation. i would imagine. and i'll take your hats off to and nurses, of course. but do they know of a duty in a national health crisis? if your job is as health crisis? if yourjob is as a medical profession . oh, do you a medical profession. oh, do you not just have to, you know , bite not just have to, you know, bite down a little bit and crack on? well, they are humans, after all, as humans move and all, as humans they move me and they obviously health problems mental health problems as well so and the more work that they do , more pressure they'll be do, more pressure they'll be underi do, more pressure they'll be under i mean my doctor has just retired . i have no idea who my retired. i have no idea who my doctor anymore. so that's a slight concern for me. hopefully nothing catastrophic happens in the next 20 minutes or so. but we trained well, by the way. i mean, i used to swim and i can save you. you're fine . i mean, save you. you're fine. i mean, our on nearest access. all right . so, hey, is down front . . so, hey, dave is down front. louis, that'll be joining me throughout the course of, the

8:34 pm
nicely onto this. yes it's time for challenge christie's in the last months i've done some incredible things. i've landed an aeroplane, i've milked a cow, and memorably i've conquered fear of spiders. i that all of those challenges were completely sprung upon me completely out of place i had no idea what i was doing or where i was going. but this week i must admit, i didn't in advance going do. in advance what i was going do. and chance to show and i had the chance to show just how flippin brilliant i am at darts and this ball has changed a lot down the years in the eighties . players used to the eighties. players used to smoke during game and hey cliff loves the renko lit jockey cigarette for him it's my kind of sport it should be the olympics and of course many players used to have a beer or two on stage, didn't they? quite famously. but we, george was a top player in that era . so when top player in that era. so when i got the chance to meet him , i i got the chance to meet him, i thought i'd roll back the years and do darts as darts was meant , be played, check how often .
8:35 pm
, be played, check how often. okay. i say this place is pretty moody , not exactly sure where moody, not exactly sure where i am, but the darts is. moody, not exactly sure where i am, but the darts is . so let's am, but the darts is. so let's have a go, shall we? oh flip and see this . place can guess. see this. place can guess. royalty isn't it. alright for that country. oh, above still here still our fantastic stuff is right . here still our fantastic stuff is right. okay if anyone's a bit fake, some of you are my brother george , they call me bobby george, they call me bobby george. sometimes call me late for dinner, but oh so presumably you're going to teach me or try to teach me as played down the most important when you throw, you have to put your hand up when the door. okay, when you throw the door. okay, you snatch got you can't snatch all you got to follow through the door. i'm quite bobby right. quite concerned bobby right. because i've not had a proper warm up right. so i think it's pretty time isn't . well you have pretty time isn't. well you have to have you ever have a set of you have to get warmed up for like your off by . the everyone
