6:02 am
keep it coming going to share as much we can throughout the much as we can throughout the program you morning. program with you this morning. but all, let's go but first of all, let's go to our top story, shall we, and get ready for more travel chaos with families driving for the families driving home for the festive told to festive period being told to brace for disruptions brace themselves for disruptions as kick in from as federal strikes kick in from pm while network rail advising passengers to travel today only if absolutely necessary , saying if absolutely necessary, saying that most people should try to complete their journeys by 3 pm. while in the latest strikes p.m. while in the latest strikes in the run up to christmas border force staff, well as border force staff, as well as postal workers, also out postal workers, are also out over and working . the prime over pay and working. the prime minister has for the christmas travel disruption, but insists the public sector pay must be controlled . well, joining us now controlled. well, joining us now is will hollis , east midlands is will hollis, east midlands reporter at nottingham railway station. good morning to you . station. good morning to you. how's it looking there .7 good how's it looking there? good morning. well, for a saturday for christmas eve at this time, 6 am. in the morning. you are expecting it to be generally quite quiet, but it is actually quite quiet, but it is actually quite eerie how seemingly quiet it is around . nottingham train
6:03 am
it is around. nottingham train station. i've just been for a little bit of a look and had a look on the board. there are no east midlands railway trains operating today. so except for a very small service , luton and st very small service, luton and st pancras and corby. but inside of nottingham station there were only a few crosscountry trains that appear to be coming . this that appear to be coming. this is every 30 minutes or so, usually on normal day there would every few minutes, but of course, on christmas eve, despite this early time, usually lots of trains would be coming in and taking people out and it's going to get quite busy. usually christmas eve, of course there no trains running an hour in out of nottingham today. the one is of course thousands of union members of rmt as well as some of the unions depending on where you are in the country are on strike really does feel on strike it really does feel like the culmination of this year of strikes that we've been having mentioned border force having as mentioned border force postal workers . i think real postal workers. i think the real big has really been the big one has really been the railways for how people railways putting for how people have been affected. of course, it is mainly pay the rmt and
6:04 am
other the unions would say that they want something that's little bit more in line with inflation and they're not getting near that% getting anywhere near that% number moment. it isn't number at the moment. it isn't just pay, though, of just about pay, though, of course, it's about working conditions as well, particularly course, it's about working con ideals as well, particularly course, it's about working con idea ofas well, particularly course, it's about working con idea of having particularly course, it's about working con idea of having driverlessly the idea of having driverless trains, no offices . so trains, no ticket offices. so there won't necessarily be somebody in a little box that you can go and talk to about which train. you need to get you might have to do a little bit more searching for yourself it's really about protecting those conditions unions like conditions from the unions like the rmt as well as as i say about pay the man who's become a bit of a famous for face rightly or wrongly reasons depending on which way you might look at, is, of course, mick lynch from the rmt he is general secretary. he said that the union remains available for talks resolve this dispute. but until government gives the rail industry a mandate to come to a negotiated settlement on job security and conditions of work , our conditions of work, our industrial campaign will continue into the new year if
6:05 am
necessary. as you said at the there, the advice really is to only travel if absolutely necessary. the few trains that are running tracks today will probably very busy . and you're probably very busy. and you're being advised to, if you are to get a train, do it as early as possible because most trains will be stopped in about 3 pm. ahead of the strike. so officially starting at 6 pm. so, well, that's the picture in nottingham. how's it looking nationally as people make their way up and down across the country, the going to be country, the are going to be busy only the. yes, the air is estimated in that 17 million people are going to be on the roads. most of the roads going to be busy at this time of the year driving home for christmas is the famous in the famous saying most people would say that it's quite nice to drive home for christmas. i can't imagine of the main imagine on any of the main motorways the main motorways or, any of the main roads in and out big cities roads in and out of big cities or even overall are going to be very pleasant for. many people today, national and over coach services , have put on extra services, have put on extra services, have put on extra services over last days. so services over the last days. so
6:06 am
many that would have to many people that would have to get a train today because the working commitments or for whatever reason they be looking to get on coach services instead and this really isn't something that you could have missed, whether it's because you mainly stay on social media or because you watch the news , there is no you watch the news, there is no way that you could have missed these strikes were coming. but if by some miracle you have missed that this is happening today and you're sitting in a hotel a night out and you're watching on television, the watching this on television, the advice is to get moving advice really is to get moving right now because there is very little as the day goes on. i'm around midday. those roads are going to be very busy and very congested. yeah, good luck with people. if they indeed just waking up at 6:06 on christmas, even a hotel room getting up and getting moving right now. well, i've got to ask you, is something we're going to be asking our viewers know, listeners throughout course listeners throughout the course of as and emails of the day as email and emails already by way already coming in by way gbviews@gbnews.uk well, what's your song? oh
6:07 am
your favourite song? oh favourite christmas song, probably white christmas . i probably white christmas. i won't sing it. i mean, i sing it if you really want me to. but i think michael buble does much better option, much better the rendition than i mean, we were going to ask you. well and then you just said dive. i think now you're going to do it. i'll tell i'll tell you what, mate. it may be as the hours progressed and i become a little more delirious , become a little more delirious, maybe because . well, let's thank maybe because. well, let's thank you very much. has asia for to us from outside nottingham railway good luck getting home everybody getting to wherever you've got to go so i really do feel for good luck. good luck if you're trying to get on the roads today and he might need a coffee maybe a baileys coffee something. yeah exactly. maybe maybe just keep will, perhaps. yeah so look forward to that. well, sing a song will look at later on in the programme perhaps the words that fantastic stuff. right. look stuff. all right. well, look thank you very much. everybody's
6:08 am
already touch. already been getting in touch. just e—mails just keep those e—mails coming in. to hear from you in. we do want to hear from you all this together, but it's all in this together, but it's another and even postal another days. and even postal workers across, the as they workers across, the uk, as they argue better pay terms and argue for better pay terms and condition it's 10th day condition yes, it's the 10th day they've out in the up they've walked out in the run up to festive part of to the festive season part of the has been going the which has been going on since the summer and it's caused disruption for businesses and customers looking to receive letters and parcels this month royal mail say there will be no stand to . meanwhile, they'll stand to. meanwhile, they'll deliver many special deliver as many special deliveries and trucks. parcels possible today. well our national reporter theo chikomba has this story. it's yet national reporter theo chikomba has this story . it's yet another has this story. it's yet another day where those expecting deliveries may have to wait a little longer as of the communication workers union, walk out for the second day after rejecting a deal this week within hours of receiving it, we asked that the company return was to get round the table , was to get round the table, proper negotiations, not introduce an agreed change while those talks were taking and to
6:09 am
give us the assurance that they're not going to introduce a new resourcing model to bring in self—employed workers who have to pay for their own finds their own . i didn't get hold of if own. i didn't get hold of if i don't get sick pay agency workers and workers on 20% less terms and conditions bearing the brunt this business west london manufactures beauty products for people with sensitive skin . good people with sensitive skin. good morning guys. have a good thing on today this of the year is their peak period christmas time and also the time before black friday. it's the most busiest time during the year. so sometimes we need to call like extra help from either agency or even from different departments. so are like a family. so we usually help each otherjust to usually help each other just to make sure that the product is made on time, but also with the higher quality standard . so higher quality standard. so that's our aim . postal workers
6:10 am
that's our aim. postal workers have been a 9% pay increase over 18 months. described by royal mail as , the company's best and mail as, the company's best and final offer. but what does this mean for millions of customers across uk who rely on service ? across uk who rely on service? it is that time of year again when many people will be coming to their local high streets to get last minute christmas presents . but get last minute christmas presents. but this year, get last minute christmas presents . but this year, with presents. but this year, with the royal mail strikes , some are the royal mail strikes, some are experiencing delays , especially experiencing delays, especially if they haven't had the opportunity to come get the opportunity to come and get the person . the strikes have caused person. the strikes have caused disruption the days leading up to christmas for pye skin care, as they say royal mail is the glue connects to their glue that connects to their onune . glue that connects to their online . it's often not online customers. it's often not just people desperate, you know, panic buying gift often for us because we are a beauty brand. many of our customers be realising they're going away and thinking , my realising they're going away and thinking, my gosh, i'm going to run out of my skincare. so they're doing a lot of panic, replenishing, too. so there's a bit of that. but yeah. know bit of that. but oh yeah. know that this last week and those

6:19 am
this ever changing world, an ever increasing modern world people wonder whether or not there's still a place for religion in. christmas often is all about presents for kids and things, but there is a much deeper meaning behind it. how important is it that people remember those religious reasons reasons ? well, we need we to reasons? well, we need we to recognise that religion is isn't is an integral part of our world whether like it or not and it's not because religion as any stitution is dead, but is because of the message that the christian religion provide for the world. and this is very and we need to recognise that our faith is what keeps us going in life, especially for those who continue to be afflicted . many continue to be afflicted. many different reasons, whether that is comfort or, you know or

6:22 am
crisis this christmas christmas . good morning. i'm alex deakin and this is your latest weather forecast from. the met office christmas eve like christmas day will be pretty mild and windy. it's going to be some rain around as well. but colder conditions are on the way for boxing day . the big picture, low boxing day. the big picture, low pressure in control. it's wafting in mild air and with that milder air comes plenty of showers . well, in fact, this showers. well, in fact, this morning we do have some snow falling over northern scotland, mostly over hills, but some for a time getting down to lower levels should tend to fizzle out through the day. and actually, for places , it's dry and for most places, it's a dry and a bright christmas eve. there'll for most places, it's a dry and a tsomechristmas eve. there'll for most places, it's a dry and a tsome decentas eve. there'll for most places, it's a dry and a tsome decent spells there'll for most places, it's a dry and a tsome decent spells of|ere'll for most places, it's a dry and a tsome decent spells of .*re'll be some decent spells of. sunshine. the winds will strengthen later. and certainly this showers . this afternoon some showers. wales northern ireland, it wales and northern ireland, it well on the heavy side . it is well be on the heavy side. it is going to be mild temperatures reaching across reaching double figures across the south, even further north coast, scotland, little warmer than yesterday, still than it was yesterday, still fairly though, in the far fairly cold, though, in the far north with wet and windy north with the wet and windy weather getting, blustery weather here getting, blustery everywhere this afternoon and through heavy through this evening, some heavy showers into wales across
6:23 am
showers moving into wales across scotland, northern england to eventually into the midlands. so it's a showery , blustery start it's a showery, blustery start to christmas day. it be a cold start to these showers will be of rain. so you're going to wake up to anything deep and, crisp. and even with these kind of temperatures 5 to 8 degrees as we start christmas day, it is going to be a day of showers then some bright or sunny spells in between, it is going to be fairly windy as well, which means the showers will move through cloud through quite a lot of cloud across east anglia in the southeast with some more rain perhaps showers perhaps here, four time showers elsewhere , but not everywhere. elsewhere, but not everywhere. seeing the showers some places, northern england, northern scotland may actually have a largely dry day. is going to largely dry day. it is going to be mild temperatures be mild with temperatures getting to double figures getting up to double figures almost across the eight almost across the board, eight or across scotland and or nine across scotland and northern in the day, northern late in the day, northerly setting bring northerly winds setting bring some to northwest some snow showers to northwest scotland christmas day night scotland on christmas day night . that cold arrives for all . that cold air arrives for all of on boxing when there of us on boxing day when there could be some more snow showers in scotland . merry in western scotland. a merry

the winter comes the mould comes back again and so even with the heating , the mould was there . so heating, the mould was there. so with without heating , it's just with without heating, it's just going to get very, very bad. and she went in and i that's not right. so you two have always voted . yeah, i've always new voted. yeah, i've always new two, basically not always. not just for good. most of the time. i figure if you fall, somebody was fighting for you and if it would a difference to your life, you would vote. yeah, yeah, yeah, of course people feel disenfranchised by food disillusioned it's understandable that people are just like what's the point what if he's not going to make a difference and what is the point the point you know i mean i could swear now, but i'm not going. you know i've i've had conversations with a couple of friends and say they can't organise the government can't organise the government can't organise a an a brewery you know they can't we'd be better off
6:33 am
people like us, we'd be better off . yeah. people you know like off. yeah. people you know like you with your life experience . you with your life experience. exactly. able to have a voice in decision unlike some else you what decisions are made to help people who are struggling. well so many people struggling with the cost of living. i just want to hopefully be here to watch my son grow up and leave you because he wants you in in a couple of years. does that make feel that your son's going to prize for of crossover is very academic well. i'm pretty academic as well. i'm pretty proud him. he's proud of him. so because he's got no dad i want to hope that being to see him do that, that's one thing i want to do that's really reflect . thank you . really reflect. thank you. thank. but thank you so much . thank. but thank you so much. well, that's the reality . it well, that's the reality. it people are going to find it very this year. many people i mean a very different looking christmas

6:36 am
6:37 am
6:38 am
welcome back, everybody. you are watching and listening to breakfast with patrick and ali. yes. and christmas may look a little different for you this year with energy bills racking up amid the cost of living crisis. we've all had to make unwanted cutbacks on expenses this christmas . but how can you this christmas. but how can you cut down on waste this year and ensure that you have a wonderful christmas without breaking the bank or joining us have the consumer champion as well hodson from how to save it a campaign that focuses on bringing down britain's energy bills permanently. look thank you very much we all need a bit of help with this at moment. i mean, there's enough lights in the studio. like blackpool studio. there's like blackpool illuminations mum would say. illuminations as mum would say. but save a little but how can people save a little bit of money? well the first thing is you look at the bills
6:39 am
really matter the most and. those are the big ones. we all know that energy bills have gone through the roof. so this time of year , especially when you've of year, especially when you've got lots of people in your house, i think it's worth thinking can save thinking about how you can save money on those bills and truth is, it's not rocket science. we can all do it. it just goes back to principles of being efficient and avoiding. to principles of being efficient and avoiding . so it helps a lot and avoiding. so it helps a lot if you've had the money to invest over the year in your energy efficiency , things like energy efficiency, things like insulation, if you had attic insulated, that would have made a massive difference but don't worry if you have, there are things you can do at home, things you can do at home, things that go down to how you even your christmas dinner. i absolutely yes so i mean how can we save money when it comes to cooking the christmas dinner apart from potentially i was going to say get a takeaway but isuppose going to say get a takeaway but i suppose money as i suppose that costs money as well say how what would you do? i've heard i've heard air fryers are the these days. but are all the rage these days. but yeah, we save money when yeah, how can we save money when
6:40 am
it actual christmas it comes to our actual christmas dinner? well, again, it goes to this principle about efficiency. so just stuff to think so it's just stuff to think about. the principle of boiling water for a for a cup of tea if you feel your entire a kettle to make a small cup of tea that's inefficient and like if you're using a vast oven to bake a few or put a small bird in there that can be inefficient is why you've got a lot of people making a lot of hype around . the making a lot of hype around. the air fryer it's the new thing everyone's talking about. but those are things like a microwave can be a lot efficient. you've got a small device doing just the job needed rather than using a vast oven. but if you are using that vast oven, there are a few tips that we can still. so i don't think we're going to convert to be making their christmas dinners in an oven for 30 or 40 years. it is certainly saying i'm going to be the gordon ramsay of the of the of the air fryer . so if of the of the air fryer. so if you are using the oven, bear in mind it's going to making mind it's going to be making your and eating that your kitchen and eating that
6:41 am
much . so it might be an much warmer. so it might be an idea you spend bit more time in that part of the house that that goes to the heating bill. again i think all of us at this time of year, if you've got family around who , are used to around who, are used to different temperatures in the house are looking at how you can keep everyone warm . i'm going to keep everyone warm. i'm going to give one tip which is the purely practical or social tip i have for my family. is this no whingeing without wool or people knocking around the house wearing their hawaiian shirts and shorts this time here, they've got no right at all to complain you saying we're complain about you saying we're trying the temperature trying to keep the temperature down so i've ever put on the jumpers that jackets and jumpers and that jackets and that's decent keep that's a decent start to keep affordable temperature or well i'm very guilty for that very very bad just walk around the t shirt and complaining about the cold. it's been a really tough few months people, it? few months people, hasn't it? but in the last few but especially in the last few weeks, had that cold snap weeks, we've had that cold snap , in lots of , lots of snow in lots of different parts the country, different parts of the country, meaning have had to ramp meaning people have had to ramp up maybe the up their heating maybe for the first this year and also in
6:42 am
first time this year and also in the run up to christmas buying presents. difficult for presents. really difficult for people who are struggling . the people who are struggling. the cost of living is there, a concern about people entering 2023in concern about people entering 2023 in debt, trying to keep up with with heating bills, energy bills , also a spending of bills, also a spending of christmas usually would . there christmas usually would. there is a concern. i mean, there's no doubt about i think that, you know, for many of us this was clear months when you could see that people to slip into debt, when they were faced with that, the government knew were unpayable. i think you had look down the line and say how is that debt going to be collected ? i nervous . you've got some ? i am nervous. you've got some kind of slightly more aggressive that could come into use over yeah that could come into use over year. i think it's imperative the government and energy companies ensure that that does not happen. but for most of us, i think there's the government schemes in place. for example , schemes in place. for example, in terms of the energy bill, support and also other kind of forms of support that people should make sure that they're in
6:43 am
touch with the energy company as well as their local council to make sure they've got all the support that can have. support that they can have. that's vital to help you get through the winter . well, through the winter. well, hodgson, really good to have you on the show as always. and merry christmas to you. have a lovely day tomorrow . yes. merry day tomorrow. yes. merry christmas to you , obviously. christmas to you, obviously. right. okay we've basically been you long. we do heavy lifting for us on this show. you long. we do heavy lifting for us on this show . we love a for us on this show. we love a bit of audience interaction today is no in fact especially today. we wanted your christmas decs up and are not disappointed ehhen decs up and are not disappointed either. no actually they put us to shame. was quite proud of to shame. i was quite proud of this before these photos started coming start with coming through. let's start with this show. this is heather this one show. this is heather christmas for nice so christmas tree gone for nice so the theme if you're listening on the theme if you're listening on the i don't want to this the radio i don't want to this is a family okay i don't want to call you've done one call out have you've done one does but that not does that but that is not a christmas tree that is that's christmas tree that is that's christmas plant a christmas potted plant that's a christmas potted plant that's a christmas a christmas christmas bush it's a christmas bush and. she's absolutely as festive as is though as festive as gary's been all apparently.
6:44 am
come on, come on. paper wars going on is a positive . thanks going on is a positive. thanks very much. is that very much. is dare i ask . what is that behind. dare i ask. what is that behind. i can't really see the present wrapped up because i think that's the presents under the tree that's christmas present by the tree. okay all right. furtive. and now what's this we've got next here are that section in my 000. that's that starts some of the tarts in my flats. what's that then last bit is they from the traditional family of christmas owls . a and family of christmas owls. a and the tree that way presents . the tree that way presents. those presents got opened last night. i did i did it i opened the process last night and what looks like an to old we've got that's a tablecloth should have ironed the christmas stag some nice forest setting you weren't joking right i am not joking . oh joking right i am not joking. oh you can see a wreath in the middle of my table, says the ladies and gentlemen, that is the absolute hovel that i live in. and it does look like a
6:45 am
grotto. doesn't? yeah there we go. did you have theme or? was go. did you have a theme or? was no. eclectic mix? no never no. an eclectic mix? no never let me loose at the shops. basically, i decided i was going to go to three different shops, just bought assortment just bought around of assortment of none of . it goes of christmas. none of. it goes together honestly, together and honestly, most of us now but there we us in the bin now but there we go keep your christmas decorations coming and is decorations coming in. and is this in the lounge this just located in the lounge or throughout just in or throughout the flats? just in the. there's a little bit . the. no, there's a little bit. well, in the bedroom, as is said, it's not it's not said, look, it's not it's not tasteful. none of it's tasteful like a winter wonderland. yeah tasteful. none of it's tasteful like like nter wonderland. yeah tasteful. none of it's tasteful like like a:er wonderland. yeah tasteful. none of it's tasteful like like a reallyiderland. yeah tasteful. none of it's tasteful like like a really bad and. yeah tasteful. none of it's tasteful like like a really bad one, yeah tasteful. none of it's tasteful like like a really bad one, you1 but like a really bad one, you know, really bad one. the know, just really bad one. the why don't you don't say anything? you want your money back you've paid you back after you've paid for, you know? go. right. know? but there we go. right. okay moving on then. okay we're moving on then. coming to keep on coming. caitlin people. there's caitlin coming people. there's loads in the loads of good ones in the involves. going to that involves. keep going to that right now let's take a at today's front pages. yes the times with rishi sunak's times leads with rishi sunak's plans early retirees plans to launch early retirees back . the headline over back to work. the headline over fifties encouraged to end early retirement . yeah we're going to retirement. yeah we're going to see how on earth going to manage to do that but the telegraph
6:46 am
leads with the rise in defence spending , an estimate spending, an estimated £1 billion needed the billion extra needed for the ministry defence avoid real ministry defence to avoid real term cuts the two years. term cuts the next two years. the stays on the topic of strikes , how unions are strikes, how unions are reportedly ministers of causing festive travel chaos in the daily mail take a different angle on the strikes, claiming that the nhs are wasting millions on wogan known jobs as frontline workers strike for better pay . and finally, the better pay. and finally, the mirror leads with what we can expect from charles's first christmas speech as king with the headline always close to lamentable. yes, there we go . lamentable. yes, there we go. well, it's time to go through those papers, isn't it? and joining us this morning is the editor of spice , tom slater, and editor of spice, tom slater, and journalist and playwright emma burnell . fantastic. right. well, burnell. fantastic. right. well, where start? why, it's the stars . we go over a touch of love to you, tom. yes, we're starting with the daily telegraph, which is the latest development in, the discussion around gender so far off forecast in scotland . so far off forecast in scotland. so i'm sure people many people have following this, these kind of
6:47 am
loosening up of the rules around genden loosening up of the rules around gender, making it much more straightforward , no need for straightforward, no need for diagnosis, cutting the time down to just a couple of months or a couple years. a lot of concerns about the impact this would have on sex based rights as well as child two of child protection. two thirds of the scottish people in suggest that against and that they're against it. and keir his know, ever keir starmer his you know, ever reliable instinct thinks we will have that well . his comments have that as well. his comments previously about wanting to again reform the uk wide gender recognition laws have kind of resurfaced and even kind of internal sources suggesting . internal sources suggesting. thatis internal sources suggesting. that is what he wants to do. but given that he's been given the fact that he's been kind it's seems at this point kind of it's seems at this point he's handed the next he's been handed the next election these are election to play out. these are the sort of things that he could potentially get away with, despite they are despite how unpopular they are with yeah indeed. with the rest. yeah indeed. i mean, is an incredibly mean, it is an incredibly controversial topic. mean, it controversial topic. i mean, it really broke time yesterday, the day people day before. well, as people were discussing scottish discussing it in the scottish parliament, protest, parliament, massive protest, very two sides to this and very much two sides to this and quite to get your views on quite keen to get your views on on mean, what do you on that. i mean, what do you think it? i think think about it? well, i think there are two things in this
6:48 am
story . this very, very odd story. this is a very, very odd because entirely based on because it's entirely based on an interview that is over a year old fact, keir starmer old and in fact, keir starmer has said other more nuanced since look i'm gender critical feminist. i'm a second wave feminist. i'm a second wave feminist. i'm a second wave feminist. i believe in protecting sex based rights. i'm very disappointed both in this and in the party's lack of standing up on this. so i'm not here to say that the labour party have got this absolutely right. in no way am i saying that.in right. in no way am i saying that. in fact i've spent quite a lot of time campaigning to try and get them to listen to women's groups on this issue, understand that there are real nuances , important conflicts of nuances, important conflicts of rights that need, a proper discussion rather than just a shutting down of debate. but to put a front page story and when you read it and get to about the fourth paragraph and it says this is based an interview keir starmer gave to pinkney over a year ago and you're like, then why is it on the front page of your newspaper? labour did vote for in hollyrood and went to
6:49 am
vote it so you can vote for it so you can understand absolute mean understand absolute not i mean there are between there are tensions between whether scottish labour whether the scottish labour party's autonomous or is it's part of the uk labour and again i'm not here to defend the labour party's position on this at all. i have tried very hard , at all. i have tried very hard, campaigned internally within the labour party to and change labour party to try and change their position to try move their position to try to move them to more nuanced central them to a more nuanced central on this. but i do think it's an odd story to say that keir starmer is going all guns blazing based on a year old interview. yeah it's controversial, isn't it? but both how quickly it was pushed through as well, i think very quickly through hollyrood. i think you were talking about that on your show really controversial. a lot of people have opinions that as well. have opinions on that as well. so keep coming as so you keep that coming in as well. that gb news dot uk well. gives that gb news dot uk emma we're going to look at something completely different now. horrific scenes now. this is the horrific scenes in paris. three people killed in a gun attack there. it's just horrendous and i mean, i you just can't imagine , you know, just can't imagine, you know, you're your your cultural centre
6:50 am
place that you feel safe a place that you're spending time with your community and your wider community of paris. paris is a lovely, beautiful city, very multicoloured shell. and for this to mean we don't i don't want assume anything but we do know that the person who is has been arrested does have an arrest history of racially crimes . and you just think you crimes. and you just think you know this is so heartbreaking and i these are kurdish people. they may not be christian, but this is a time of year that the is celebrating generally and just think how heartbreaking for them to be going through this at this time tom, i'll throw it your way as we're actually seeing various different images on at the moment. if on our screens at the moment. if you're listening on radio were full blown really yesterday taking place in the wake of this i was on air at the time and we ended up spending the vast majority the show with these ended up spending the vast majorstartlinge show with these ended up spending the vast majorstartling live w with these ended up spending the vast majorstartling live images. 1ese quite startling live images. your reaction to that side of it
6:51 am
so? well, i think it just shows the kind of sense that communities don't feel like they're being looked after both a general sense this sort of instability in the country. i mean it's worth remembering over the of the or the course of the past six or seven years that france, but particularly just particularly paris it's just been kind of one been rocked by kind of one horrendous after horrendous atrocity after another islamist, another primarily islamist, of course, see course, but still, we do see things this and you do get things like this and you do get that kind of sense of insecurity that kind of sense of insecurity that must be felt by not just the kurdish part population, but the kurdish part population, but the is the population in general is going quite significant. going to be quite significant. so one of those things so it's just one of those things we particularly we think is just particularly given past , we think is just particularly given past, as i say, six, seven, eight. yeah, that particular experience. yeah, that's the first time the that's what the first time the kurds been attacked in it kurds have been attacked in it was something similar in 2010 where women were killed. where three women were killed. yeah something yeah so it's certainly something that's been rumbling for that's been been rumbling on for a time but lost attention a long time but lost attention in at the moment. tom let's have a look at the daily mail. we obviously we know about the strikes, the and the nurses and in the two weeks they've got a completely different take on this. and the nhs wasting
6:52 am
millions. i mean this , has been millions. i mean this, has been a kind of long running scandal. if anyone has been paying a bit of attention because whilst there's been this chronic problem with understaffing , the problem with understaffing, the nhs, with people not being adequately rewarded their adequately rewarded for their work leading to the work and so on, leading to the situation we're at in situation that we're at now in many been this kind of many there has been this kind of long running where you long running issue where you would see job ads up. would see these job ads pop up. yeah director lived yeah diversity director of lived experience, favourite experience, a personal favourite because only kind because it's the only kind experience actually experience you can actually really exactly. i mean, really have. exactly. i mean, surely everyone is qualified. yeah, indeed . and for that yeah, indeed. and for that particular role, what was it, £115,000, which would be what , £115,000, which would be what, three nurses at least point . oh, three nurses at least point. oh, yeah. so of course , getting rid yeah. so of course, getting rid of the diversity of this not going to solve the problem. the nhs funding, nhs structure, funding, inefficiencies, is you inefficiencies, whatever is you concerned about. but does concerned about. but it does show up certainly warped sets of priorities, especially the fact that nhs is incredibly that the nhs is incredibly diverse speaking diverse and broadly speaking harmonious the harmonious work for all the places that needs a diversity officer. it doesn't strike me the would be one of those. the nhs would be one of those. no, as we've been no, i have as we've been relentlessly about relentlessly talking about strikes. i'm sick of it.
6:53 am
strikes. i mean, i'm sick of it. i can only imagine how the british public every single day overheads is the overheads across that is the news. to it news. so we have to do it course. but i can't help but feel there maybe little bit feel as there maybe a little bit more should be paid from the staff the lower end of staff towards the lower end of the nhs. pay structure or where all this money is going. because the nhs apparently has had since 2010 terms 39% funding 2010 a real terms 39% funding increase which gets lost in all of this their wages. of course, nurses, paramedics. then i feel like that wages have equated to a funding increase and there is a funding increase and there is a bit of a black hole, a bottomless pit and maybe they should be directing some anger, not just towards the government, but the overall the but towards the overall of the nhs. maybe do you think? well i would that there are the would say that there are the nurses are not just striking over pay, they're striking over terms conditions that is terms and conditions and that is the of the and the structure of the nhs and they're about, but they're talking about, but i would like to put this story in context now. i do think that any job should have kpis key , job should have kpis key, performance indicators that you have to hit and achieve. we should be checking whether these things are bringing in value for
6:54 am
money but the maximum equation how much these jobs have come to which is put together by i think it is the taxpayers alliance comes . to it is the taxpayers alliance comes. to 0.00 for 4% of the nhs budget . so i really do comes. to 0.00 for 4% of the nhs budget. so i really do think if, if someone were talking to me about how change my spending habhs about how change my spending habits , my life and they focus habits, my life and they focus on something that was nought point nought nought 4% of what i was spending, i would say that they were not providing me value for money or good advice . i do for money or good advice. i do think that we have to have a conversation about how we fund the nhs, how we make sure that it's efficient. i think problem is we will get massively from the conversation we need to have if we focus relentlessly on this stuff. just, just quickly before move on to another one of your stories, tom, he just responds to a little bit because. i think this is that is a fair point. is it more just a matter of principle? think it's a bit principle? you think it's a bit of a token for want of a better phrase, going somewhere? maybe
6:55 am
they could rid stuff they could get rid of this stuff and show what and it would show intent. what do you think? well, i think it just shows a level of priority, shall say, and there'll shall we say, and there'll be things instance, in things where, for instance, in midst cost of living midst of a cost of living crisis, ps, a pay crisis, if and ps, get a pay rise, or if this happens again, this is stopping something like that happening. it's not that from happening. it's not going problem going to solve the problem for everyone country. we everyone across the country. we all but it just all know that. but it just creates kind of sense of creates that kind of sense of priorities, as i say, where i agree, the problem is much more profound in relation to the nhs but this any but that doesn't make this any more but if it's less more sensible. but if it's less than it's really a than 1,000, it's really a priority. that's point. we priority. that's my point. we may saying it's a priority. may be saying it's a priority. we're about that we're talking about it and that may warping a sense of the may be warping a sense of the priorities. it clearly priorities. but it is clearly not priority. don't think any not priority. i don't think any like talk the mail or like if talk about the mail or telegraph, ones who tend to telegraph, only ones who tend to report on this sort of stuff. it's as if they're to it's not as if they're to discussions about how to radically indeed. radically the nhs. no indeed. but i'm saying i'm saying i would that their of would say that their coverage of these than 0.004% of these jobs is than 0.004% of their they go this their coverage or they go this is life and this is , we want to is life and this is, we want to say people that we get we've got
6:56 am

this is your latest weather forecast office forecast from the met office christmas like christmas christmas eve. like christmas day , be pretty and windy. day, be pretty mild and windy. there's going to some rain there's going to be some rain around well. but colder around as well. but colder conditions are on the way for boxing day. here's the big picture, low pressure in control , wafting mild and with , it's wafting in mild and with that milder air comes plenty of showers . well, in fact, this showers. well, in fact, this morning we do have some snow falling over northern scotland, mostly over hills, but some for time getting down to lower levels that tend to fizzle out through the day. and actually for most places , it's a dry and for most places, it's a dry and a bright christmas eve. be some decent sunshine the decent spells of sunshine the winds will strengthen later and certainly this afternoon some showers wales and northern showers for wales and northern ireland. well on the ireland. it could well on the heavy side, it is going be mild temperatures reaching, double figures the south and figures across the south and even further scotland, even further north of scotland, little warmer than it was yesterday. fairly cold in yesterday. still fairly cold in the far north with the wet and windy weather here getting blustery everywhere afternoon and evening, some and through this evening, some heavy wales heavy showers moving into wales , across scotland, northern england too, and eventually into the midlands. so it's a showery
6:58 am
and blustery start to christmas day. it won't be a cold start , day. it won't be a cold start, so these showers will be of rain . you're not going to wake up to .you're not going to wake up to anything deep, crisp. and even with these kind of temperatures , 5 to 8 degrees as we start christmas it is going to be christmas day, it is going to be a day of showers. then with some bright spells in bright or sunny spells in between. it is going to be fairly as. well, which fairly windy as. well, which means will move means the showers will move through a lot of cloud through quite a lot of cloud across anglia, south—east, across east anglia, south—east, with persistent rain with some more persistent rain perhaps a time . showers perhaps here for a time. showers elsewhere, but not seeing the showers. some places , northern showers. some places, northern england, northern scotland may actually have a largely dry day. it is going to be mild with temperatures getting up to double figures across double figures almost across board or nine, of course, board eight or nine, of course, scotland northern scotland and, northern ireland late northerly set late in the day northerly set in, some snow showers to in, bring some snow showers to northwest scotland on christmas day that arrives for day. that cold air arrives for all us on boxing day when there well be some more snow showers in western scotland. merry christmas .

to set off early warning of christmas eve travel misery as walkouts begin on the railway as well a very good christmas eve morning . is 7:00 it's saturday morning. is 7:00 it's saturday the 24th of december. this is breakfast on gb news me patrick christys on the wonderful ellie costello show. here are your top stories this morning. well, as rail workers on strike again, millions making their way home for christmas , they're being for christmas, they're being warned it could be chaos on britain's roads and there'll be no last minute delivery either. as royal mail strike for a second consecutive two day unions warn , they won't be unions warn, they won't be backing down as they fight for a
7:02 am
better deal. a royal milestone. king charles the third will pay tribute to his late mother in his first christmas message to the nation tomorrow. and christmas phone call, prime minister rishi sunak decides not to do the message, instead calling , public service. thank calling, public service. thank them for . calling, public service. thank them for. that service and some of you have been getting in touch your christmas trees . touch your christmas trees. here's one for you. what is coming up for us now. there a no fly . there we are in the war coming up for us now. there a no fly. there we are in the war and if you will, listening on the radio. it's lovely. i can see baubles and, white ones as well. yes, obviously we love it we love the decks that are coming in thick and fast. thank you very much, everyone keeps sending those in. and i believe actually you can see little actually you can see a little bit of hollis that which is bit of will hollis that which is just well we're to be just as well because we're to be over shortly . well, nice nice over shortly. well, nice nice weather , nice. all of us. like i weather, nice. all of us. like i
7:03 am
do this for a living, isn't it? it's this magic. it doesn't just happen people. right. okay. good morning, everybody our top story. time to. stop story. yeah, it's time to. stop laughing. ready for more laughing. get ready for more travel with families travel chaos with families driving festive driving home for the festive period, being to brace for period, being told to brace for disruptions. rail disruptions. further rail strikes in from pm. yes, strikes kick in from pm. yes, network is advising network rail is advising passengers travel today only passengers to travel today only if absolutely . which isn't great if absolutely. which isn't great if absolutely. which isn't great if you're trying to get to your family for christmas . they're family for christmas. they're also saying that most people should try complete their journeys by pm. well, in the latest strikes in the run up to christmas border staff as well as workers are also as postal workers are also walking out over pay and conditions as prime conditions. as the prime minister apologised minister has apologised christmas travel disruption but insist that public sector pay must be controlled while . must be controlled while. joining us now is our very own will hollis, our east midlands reporter , nottingham railway reporter, nottingham railway station. good morning . well station. good morning. well what's the latest you are. i mean it's still very quiet by way. i used to i used to go to know about train station a lot because i went to university there. so i know it well, but i
7:04 am
was never there as early as you are. it's fair to say what's going on. well good morning. yes, well, the lights may be on, but it's pretty much nobody is home. a few trains are running in and out of nottingham railway station and none of them are east railway trains . so those east railway trains. so those are the kind of trains that particularly go between leicester, nottingham derby run intercity routes down to st pancras , the midlands, those pancras, the midlands, those across trains that are coming in right now, there's only seem to be coming in half an hour and when a train does arrive, it seems that a trickle of passengers seem to come off. of course, the advice is to travel if absolutely necessary upon the of members of the rmt union as well as some of the unions depend which rail operators work the trains in. your part of the country are also on strike . it country are also on strike. it does seem like lots of people maybe already made their journeys or they're considering other plans . but i spoke to
7:05 am
other plans. but i spoke to a few people who were hoping that they'd be able to get train today to get back to croatia for christmas. and it looks like their plans are going to be severely affected going to manchester airport as well. i was supposed to take the train to sheffield and then from sheffield, manchester, but yeah, there is no train. so now have to grab an uber. i'm going home to grab an uber. i'm going home to croatia for christmas . yeah, to croatia for christmas. yeah, i'm hoping get home by christmas, but we'll see. i was supposed to catch a train to manchester to go home for christmas to croatia to visit our families. christmas to croatia to visit our families . but unfortunately our families. but unfortunately we couldn't get a train because of the strikes even though we bought our tickets the website. but it turned out not being available trains to. well i'm bit frustrated that the train isn't running , especially isn't running, especially because there was little notice it's not going to go. i thought strike would be affected like from six onwards. that's at
7:06 am
least. what we saw of , well, we least. what we saw of, well, we need to find another solution . need to find another solution. it's probably going to be an over. it's probably going to be an over . we don't know exactly over. we don't know exactly that. we'll see what we can find and it is what it is. but i understand the situation definitely makes sense. it could have been planned out a bit better. so we don't get in this situation to arrive here and ask ourselves, what are we going to do ? yes well, the situation here do? yes well, the situation here in, nottingham in the east midlands is going to be very similar to the situation throughout country. of course that advice is only travel if absolutely necessary . and as you absolutely necessary. and as you said there at the start , trains said there at the start, trains are going to be terminated eating at 3 pm. there will be virtually trains on the track. that's because they're to be moving them away into the old train shelters they keep train shelters where they keep trains at trains overnight because at 6 pm, strike officially pm, that strike officially starts then there'll no starts and then there'll no trains right through until at least the 27th. so. well, that's the picture . nottingham speaking the picture. nottingham speaking to people outside the station. what's it going to look like
7:07 am
nationally because people are being told to complete their journeys by 3 pm. if you want to visit your family, going to be hitting the roads on you, it's going to be chaos out there. yes. well, the estimates that there's going to be 17 million people on roads today. that's probably not as much as they would be on any usual christmas. but a lot of people that have had be working throughout this period in the build up to christmas that dreaded period where have dreaded period where you have to work in build up to work in the build up to christmas day, you can't be having mince pies and your drink kit. people will have kit. sorts of people will have have taking instead . have to be taking cars instead. of big coach companies of course, big coach companies like express well also had like express as well also had their their number of coaches that are going to be on the roads boosted. so lots of people will be getting on coaches instead of course just like those full university croatians students trying to get back to croatia via manchester for border force strikes are going to an effect on people that are
7:08 am
trying to fly and out of the country. but as we saw yesterday, the military been involved and they've been checking and seems checking people's and that seems to be quite smoothly there of course strikes on today and right through until the end of the year except for one day on the year except for one day on the 27th. so it seems that while you might have a lot of trouble getting to your airports getting out of the airports themselves might not as as we might might not as bad as we might think . oh might not as bad as we might think. oh well might not as bad as we might think . oh well really good think. oh well really good speech thank all right. speech you thank all right. you're not done. are you going to sing for us? yeah. well, you said you might might a tune at some point or you still you still not doing. it's just the nafion still not doing. it's just the nation express. i've been practising . i've been practising practising. i've been practising . but i'll tell you what. when the sun starts to shine on nottingham train station, maybe then you will have a tune out of mr. hollis. okay. all right. well, i'll hold his laptop. he's going to hold you to that. although i think he's just got a little get out of jail card because it looks a bit overcast anyway. well, thank you very
7:09 am
much. well as they're fantastic stuff just picking the stuff as ever, just picking the way the chaos. and way through the chaos. yes. and good you have good luck good luck if you have good luck rails or roads or the air today. good luck. and we hope you get your family . you take some time, your family. you take some time, but we hope you get there. i'm not looking forward to i've got to home tomorrow then drive to home tomorrow and then drive back on boxing day morning. back out on boxing day morning. i just you going wrong i can just see you going wrong because the thing no one because the thing is, no one will believe as well if will believe me as well if i ring up gb news go. sorry, i can't do that. yesterday want can't do that. yesterday i want to the goal is to believe me. the goal is i want to be. yeah, where's home? cheshire. wilmslow long way. how long? long would that send long? how long would that send me? 4 hours. but if me? a cool 4 hours. but if everyone else on the road, everyone else is on the road, then it might take me upwards of five. could me five. it takes could me depending or i depending on whether or not i want in boxing day it want come in on boxing day it could 24. we'll have to wait could be 24. we'll have to wait and say i would go right. well, for more analysis, we're going to to political to be speaking to political susan because strong susan evans, because it's strong central . good morning, susan. central. good morning, susan. great see a little bit of great to see a little bit of positivity in the background there sadly no festivity on there but sadly no festivity on there but sadly no festivity on the railways or anywhere else would seem at the moment because
7:10 am
it strike strikes is up . it it strike strikes is up. it absolutely is. so i think we've had strikes pretty much every day this month . as you say, it's day this month. as you say, it's rail workers today . they're on rail workers today. they're on strike until the 29th of december. it's also some bus drivers are on strike today. highways agency workers on strike until sunday. the border force is off until although the army seem to be doing a very good job covering for them , the good job covering for them, the royal mail is on strike again. test examiners, they're both on strike until the 7th of january. then we know the ambulance strike on the 28th of december and the baggage handlers are on strike from the 29th of december to the 1st of january. so out there really . a difficult one, there really. a difficult one, isn't it, for rishi sunak, he says he's sad and, disappointed that these strikes are threatening to disrupt christmas, but suzanne. there's no end to , is there? it looks no end to, is there? it looks like it's going to be set, continue into 2023. well, we got a standoff, have we between , the
7:11 am
a standoff, have we between, the unions and the government, on the one hand, we've got the government basically saying they can't capitulate to endless demands for above inflation rises and there's , i think has rises and there's, i think has to be a lot of sympathy for that view. we've got public net debt is now 98.7% of gdp, 2477 billion in debt. public net borrowing is the highest it's been since records began in 1993. the state is now enormous and a very expensive and on the other side we've got the unions who, let's be honest , think who, let's be honest, think there are certain elements of there are certain elements of the union who actually are not so much interested in getting decent pay rises, but they want to bring the down. and if you look at some of the placards that we've seen on the picket line, i think there's definitely undercurrent there. so holding out and as i say we've got this standoff and until one party capitulate , it's going to be the capitulate, it's going to be the general public that suffers. well, look, you mentioned
7:12 am
political undertones that season. i think initially people especially it comes to the medical staff are thinking a bit of a pay rise pitch for a pay rise. i was surprised up north of the border in scotland, members royal college of nursing rejected , a seven and a half an rejected, a seven and a half an on average that was a seven and a half% pay rise that the lowest members of staff that would have seen an 11 and a half% pay rise. i just wonder if we start to see a bit more down here now, especially after people have had travel ruined christmas and travel ruined over christmas and this rumbles on into january and into not if into february whether or not if they turning down pay they start turning down pay offers half% public offers like and a half% public support might turn . think that's support might turn. think that's absolutely right because most people won't be getting pay rises anything like that and of course, i suppose always measure our reaction to things in terms of our own experience , you know, of our own experience, you know, nhs staff in, england and wales have had a 4.75% offer that's out with a guarantee of at least an extra 1400 for the lowest
7:13 am
paid . so and people who aren't paid. so and people who aren't getting those kind pay rises, i think are justifiably going to be quite angry and aggrieved. and of course, what's particularly with the nhs as strikes go on is we're going to see increasingly alarming headunes see increasingly alarming headlines about people who have died . they haven't got an died. they haven't got an ambulance or they haven't had treatment in a&e . and that's treatment in a&e. and that's going to be it's not just extremely unfortunate it, obviously, but i think that might well start to turn opinion and what is so sorry what is so interesting i think about is usually you'd see labour kind on the picket lines supporting striking workers, but keir starmer in all of this is actually agreeing somewhat that these pay rises such as those 90% that the nurses are asking for, is he's saying that he should get round the table, but those kind figures just cannot be matched. we are looking at a stalemate only where even labour are saying know this isn't going to be agreed on. yeah, absolutely . would i think keir
7:14 am
absolutely. would i think keir starmer's response has been quite extraordinary in terms of who history of the labour party and the unions. but of course keir starmer hasn't quite so positive let's say as some other previous leaders of , the labour previous leaders of, the labour party or some other contenders when , when they've had when, when they've had leadership contests in the past . so i think his comments are very interesting . yeah, yeah very interesting. yeah, yeah we'll see. we have to it moving a little bit but we just have to ask you a question we're asking pretty much all of our guests today. what is your favourite christmas song and my favourite christmas song and my favourite christmas song and my favourite christmas song ? oh goodness. christmas song? oh goodness. i tell you what, i don't like and that's the snowman that that's frosty the snowman that drives nuts . but i drives me absolutely nuts. but i shouldn't shouldn't be so down. should say i to say i think should say i have to say i think my favourite christmas songs are actually some the great christmas carols. things like actually some the great chris'thes carols. things like actually some the great chris'the herald. things like actually some the great chris'the herald angelsngs like actually some the great chris'the herald angels singike actually some the great chris'the herald angels sing , e actually some the great chris'the herald angels sing , i hark the herald angels sing, i know come all ye faithful. and i of those too. it's got to be a come. would you say so? because i'm a soprano it's got the i'm a soprano and it's got the better discount she's made better discount out. she's made a mistake. yeah right. a
7:15 am
a massive mistake. yeah right. a massive mistake has that one. you've actually mentioned that are and that you are a soprano and that you be good singing. there any good at singing. is there any chance can get teeny chance we can just get a teeny little rendition ? well, i've got little rendition? well, i've got i've got a terrible cold. you sound good . and i going to sing sound good. and i going to sing a couple ye faithful just a little bit, a little line for us, a little taste . okay who he us, a little taste. okay who he faithful , joyful. then try to faithful, joyful. then try to come . here. come here, you tube come. here. come here, you tube tube. come. here. come here, you tube tube . yeah. well five stars tube. yeah. well five stars today, you know, graceful you are not me. sorry don't make me do caesar. no, you sound fabulous . yes. merry christmas fabulous. yes. merry christmas to you. thank you so much for joining us . right? fantastic joining us. right? fantastic believe suggested. well, hollis , you watching, right? yeah. so hey. yeah you got all right. okay. well, we got lots more coming. let's bring you up to date the number of people to die from the blistering cold weather

decreasing . decreasing. and now we've been asking you to send in pictures of your christmas trees today because we were quite proud of all this. yes, that's what got special gb news baubles that union jack baubles behind as were proud. but then been were quite proud. but then been in touch it all to shame so we're going to share linda's tree with you now have a look at linda says oh i see oh this fireplace i see so nice festive garland and the fireplace and a cat and those two little i like that. no i think like little mini sunglasses and linda i won't reveal i won't reveal your secret, but i only think i know what you got them from because my mum's got them surprised, you know, wonderful well i've got everything else there . room in everything else there. room in my little flat. but my pocket, little flat. but that's half. that's a lovely christmas half. well done , linda. yes, thank you well done, linda. yes, thank you very for linda. and this very much for linda. and this might be our favourite i think patrick's this holiday
7:19 am
patrick's given this holiday thatis patrick's given this holiday that is this from leon and white tavern great part of the world there are i mean leon yeah my producer's asking me do live in buckingham palace. i mean this is unbelievable i mean it's palatial if you listening on the radio right now, it's kind a patterned carpet and lots of golds furniture. looks like a palace of us i it does amazing christmas chandelier chalet . i christmas chandelier chalet. i forgot that. yeah. i wonder whether or not leon stitching is up here. is that the for the queen's final speech? you know, the last . yeah, maybe. i wonder the last. yeah, maybe. i wonder . there was a game which had a gold piano behind. it if people kicked off about it remember thinking well is the queen, you know that is true. yes. wonder what king charles will as what king charles will have as his wouldn't be, but his backdrop. i wouldn't be, but look something like that exactly like very like that. well done, liam. very good. coming good. so keep them coming in. we're to going to we're going to we're going to them we and actually was them up. we and actually was doing some research for you but you where christmas trees you know where christmas trees come i'm to come from. well, i'm going to say don't wrong of me
7:20 am
say norway. i don't wrong of me . i came from germany where prince albert was born. introduce to england during the georgian period when george the third was on the throne. but you are right. norway gives us the treatment forget treatment there. forget christmas , an ancient christmas trees, an ancient tradition no, i suppose one tradition that no, i suppose one would think be. i mean , 1790, tradition that no, i suppose one would think be. i mean ,1790, i would think be. i mean, 1790, i imagine there were many fir trees in battle. i have to be fair. so there you go. well, go 7090s, but it's still going strong. number one, norway dissolved last year. we had a terrible christmas in trafalgar square. remember that ? that was square. remember that? that was that was a bit depressing. it it was i don't know if we got a photo of that but it did look a little bit a little bit dishevelled. share that with you a little bit later after i am. okay. well, moving on, people are because the are moving on because the government is said to rely the military cover striking military to cover striking workers. festive period. yes, december seen ten different december has seen ten different sectors from sectors go on strike from well—lit railway workers to driving instructors . senior driving instructors. senior military officials told the telegraph that it's not right for the to be asked to give up their christmas over these disputes. well, indeed well, to
7:21 am
go into this, we're joined now by general chapman happy by major general chapman happy nearly christmas , you major nearly christmas, you major general chip chapman . and so general chip chapman. and so let's get to the matter in hand, shall we? it is now upon us, the military are filling in left, right and centre . i'm sorry, but right and centre. i'm sorry, but i think if anyone deserves christmas, surely it's our brave military heroes . well, there's military heroes. well, there's two parts to that. there's something like. six and a half thousand military deployed at the moment. so i'd refer visited some of them in estonia last week. so there are defence cuts which continue all the time . the which continue all the time. the second one in terms of the military to the civilian authorities that although it authorities is that although it might not be deemed to be fair by certain senior military and they were sort of slackening their box by rees—mogg . it is a their box by rees—mogg. it is a matter of stated policy and commitment. so if the government tells to do something, you crack on and do it. and of course the military we saw yesterday on day one of the border force have this will will do can do attitude and are adaptable to
7:22 am
these situations which is it seemed to go so well yesterday. the real thing for the military , will this really affect morale ? you will see people potentially signing off in the future to extent that was ameliorated by the defence secretary saying they're going to get a £20 a day net bonus for every day that they've either training or committed to these operations, either at the airport or in the ambulances over the christmas period i was with some british soldiers last week and they were talking about some of being on as little as 20 t 0 £1000 some of being on as little as 20 t o £1000 a year, but not allowed to £1000 a year, but not allowed to £1000 a year, but not allowed to strike as they're obviously serving as soldiers in the army. how do you think some of them feel to stand in for people who are on salary sometimes double that. are on salary sometimes double that . well, the use of that sort that. well, the use of that sort of comparator of pace of course at the lowest level that is sort private soldier but a lance corporal , for example would be corporal, for example would be on 27.3 k. so you know, the army
7:23 am
and the armed forces a hierarchy so , for example, a sergeant. so, for example, a sergeant. there'll be lots of them out there on 35.8 k. so as i said, if people are disgruntled by they always say in the armed forces that you're only seven clicks away from resigning on your computer and you just leave in the required time. you don't like the commitments that army give you, but of course, when sign up to the armed forces , you sign up to the armed forces, you give up some right, some responsibility us and it's our job. ultimately serve the job. ultimately to serve the juuan job. ultimately to serve the julian the government of the day of whatever hue and to be apolitical . well, that's just, apolitical. well, that's just, isn't it? and it's difficult . isn't it? and it's difficult. and to that extent, your hands are, for want of a better phrase, but rightly so in a way, the military, of course, got to be apolitical, got to be that, too. so i've to be there in too. so i've got to be there in a time of crisis. look i've got to know, coming to ask, you know, what's coming shortly? favourite shortly? what's your favourite christmas for fairytale of christmas song for fairytale of new york by the pogues ? i sing new york by the pogues? i sing sang more like macgowan rather than cursing them. of course,
7:24 am
don't even go the oh, he is. he's nipped in the bud straight away. a military man not messing around. major general david chapman, thank you very, very much a wonderful much to have a wonderful christmas. thank you, patrick. all right, you two go along, coleman. then you maybe coleman. then you should maybe do karaoke . well, that's that's do karaoke. well, that's that's where are he says, where i mean, what are he says, you what? we've got all in you know what? we've got all in common. mean he's he's a man. he's obviously hard as nails as serve with dignity serve this country with dignity . you're we've nothing . now you're right we've nothing coming apart. you serve gb news view us every day. yeah you practically live here now. i do . do i sleep under this house? right. got loads right. we've got loads coming in. got coming up. in. we've got loads coming up. more on the show, including the latest fours with friend the show the channel as show friend of the channel as housewives favour them again. no go anywhere .

7:30 am
barbecue about 2005 barbecue in in about 2005 seriously fiver seriously because the fiver he said pay fiver or you said either pay a fiver or you bnng said either pay a fiver or you bring mate rich darling go bring my mate rich darling go just didn't go just you didn't go. yeah. i'll bet you they'll be this year. be happening a lot this year. they cost living. yeah. they of cost living. yeah. so paul johnson's christmas. paul johnson's got a christmas. yeah, maybe a big chance that we've to do some sorry so we've got to do some sorry so yeah reason you're here but yeah the reason you're here but very very news yesterday very sad very sad news yesterday with death cohen the with the death george cohen the former world cup former in welding and world cup winner played winner from 1966, played 459 games fulham for games for fulham played for england times between 1964 england 37 times between 1964 and 1967. i knew george cohen. he was the first man i really deau he was the first man i really dealt with when as a young reporter , bringing someone up, reporter, bringing someone up, asking for a favour, give a quote something. he always, quote on something. he always, always picks up his phone. and he helped know me he always helped me not know me from he just used to. from adam. but he just used to. he got know me after a while. he got to know me after a while. and this is somebody who he was a modern fullback, patrick. he was somebody ramsey saw was somebody who alf ramsey saw didn't wingers. you didn't play with wingers. so you had somewhere. he had to come from somewhere. he had to come from somewhere. he had uber fitz. george. had to be uber fitz. george. george was the best george best said he was the best right back he'd ever played against. so 37 caps. he was carry with complete carry yourself with complete dignity at all times he was he
7:31 am
had restaurant named after him had a restaurant named after him at was to games at fulham. he was going to games and recently he and so very very recently he survived by his wife daphne. this is interesting because i remember and eriksen remember in savannah and eriksen all wags running amok all the wags were running amok at the camp for the world cup and the son me up and said and the son rang me up and said i didn't get onto get onto one of the world winners and of the world cup winners and say, getting to pass of the world cup winners and say, opinion getting to pass of the world cup winners and say, opinion onjetting to pass of the world cup winners and say, opinion on the ng to pass of the world cup winners and say, opinion on the wags. 3ass of the world cup winners and say, opinion on the wags. sos our opinion on the wags. so i rang george cohen and he said, well, look, don't you, my well, look, why don't you, my wife, in 1966. why wife, awake in 1966. why don't why you to daphne? why don't you speak to daphne? and so 800 phone to daphne definitely gave this think definitely gave this i think it's you know anyone it's all for you know anyone ever run around ever since it's run amok around bob bob and it was great bob and bob and it was great that page of the sun three days pay that page of the sun three days pay me quote well i was pay for me quote go well i was getting very very sad it means we've only got two players left from starting from 1966 and from the starting from 1966 and so he was 83 as i say. but yeah, i mean, you should see him around games all the time, especially a fulham is a hugely respected guy. he retired in two kent as well. don't forget his nephew cup winner in nephew ben a world cup winner in rugby his nephew that is rugby 1923. his nephew that is also pedigree family. also sporting pedigree family.
7:32 am
wow so terrific sort of guy what life and what loss as because we're down to two now we've lost a lot in the last sort of 556 years we've only got bobby charlton left and geoff hurst, of course, who scored a hat trick. yes, absolutely right. what else have we got? item well i mean we've had the premier league restart , we've got a league restart, we've got a whole list of games on boxing league restart, we've got a who i'vest of games on boxing league restart, we've got a who i've got: games on boxing league restart, we've got a who i've got inames on boxing league restart, we've got a who i've got in front on boxing league restart, we've got a who i've got in front of boxing league restart, we've got a who i've got in front of me,ing day i've got in front of me, i've the trouble of i've taken the trouble of printing them off you ben printing them off for you ben for tottenham at 1233 boys. jack actually this the floor manager aston villa's aston villa an aston villa's interesting their manager unai emery going to emery has said he's going to speak his goalkeeper. mean, speak to his goalkeeper. i mean, martinez he's the guy martinez because he's the guy he's who saved he's the guy who saved the penalties week for argentina. they feeling he's they just there's a feeling he's got a bit over the top with the celebrations. and, you know, if he plays he put the golden glove in opportune moment for this. in an opportune moment for this. and to speak and so he's going to speak a word it. and also, pep word for it. and also, pep guardiola is not happy. kalvin phillips from. guardiola is not happy. kalvin philworld from. guardiola is not happy. kalvin philworld cup from. guardiola is not happy. kalvin philworld cup unfit, from. guardiola is not happy. kalvin philworld cup unfit, overweight the world cup unfit, overweight and got the and so yeah, we've got the picture, we? that's not picture, haven't we? that's not kalvin phillips. that's a better celebration of glove, celebration of his glove, i think with glove. that's the think with the glove. that's the one that was one
7:33 am
one before that was the one we're talking about. but we're talking about. but but you just match kalvin just can't match kalvin phillips, guardiola. phillips, pep guardiola. the man's major campaign man's his major campaign that's come cap come back in england. cap overweight. well, he's fat shamed. doesn't say. yeah, yeah. at fairly. it's 554 at least three fairly. it's 554 minutes of the minutes since the start of the season he's probably if season so he's probably not if he gone the world cup he have gone to the world cup anyway, play for anyway, although he did play for against and senegal. yeah against wales and senegal. yeah but know, are they going but i don't know, are they going to those that were in to be feeling those that were in qatar. they haven't had a lot of it now have they. that's it right now have they. that's straight in this. an endurance test. endurance. had test. it's an endurance. we had it with covid two years ago that just of suck it up just kind of to suck it up because know, the manchester because you know, the manchester have there this have been there when this decision it's 12 years decision was made it's 12 years ago one thought about this. ago no one thought about this. now been memo now there's always been a memo going the managers going around to all the managers to kick off to say, don't, don't kick off about it. don't try and push up the company. you can't all tournament. it's the world tournament. so it's the world cup normally cup because normally they might they play three they moan if they play three games seven, seven days games in seven, seven days manchester have got i think eight in over three eight games in just over three weeks they've got a squad to weeks now they've got a squad to deal with having said that, deal with it. having said that, while managers about while the managers moaning about it because there's it more. yeah, because there's something's normally something's been said normally they slightest thing, they made the slightest thing, yet be to
7:34 am
yet they seem to be happy to suck fact that players suck up the fact that players are overweight from are coming back overweight from this so it this tournament, you know? so it does a lot of sense. it does make a lot of sense. it doesn't it doesn't doesn't it really doesn't necessary. a real excuse necessary. it's a real excuse me. it's a real endurance test. and so some would say that's just just what to just that's just what we have to put up with for this one season alone and start to settle alone and things start to settle back season. but going back down season. but it's going to repercussions because, to have repercussions because, i mean, players will i mean, some some players will i mean, some some players will i mean, didn't so mean, sometimes didn't go so well. feel fresher. well. it may feel fresher. you're going see, but you're you're going to see, but you're going changes form going to see changes in form compared dynamics that compared to the dynamics that existence before the world cup. and feeds into and i suppose this feeds into the might make it the narrative it might make it more i feel sorry for more fun. i just feel sorry for captain phillips, by the way, because talking about because he's talking about it being probably being overweight. we're probably talkin oh talking £2 or something. oh well, he's not like that. their weight, weights, people well, he's not like that. their weigirealise weights, people well, he's not like that. their weigirealise howlhts, people well, he's not like that. their weigirealise howlhts, howyle don't realise how just how finely tuned these athletes. these are like yourself talking about finely tuned athletes. i can word darts in front can see the word darts in front of quick way out of me here. yeah. quick way out and yeah. well and darts. yeah. yeah. well i mean as i say, it's a the ali pagua mean as i say, it's a the ali paglia has been now since two thousand and seven. i was to talking on the producers backstage real darts backstage and a real darts fan, 128 players tournament
7:35 am
128 players in this tournament this year. it's gone up from about about 19, about i think it was about 19, 2019, was extended. now 2019, and that was extended. now it's the quality. you it's diluted the quality. you get of whitewash is in the get a lot of whitewash is in the first rounds of matches first few rounds of matches i mean i remember the very, very early stages of darts 20 years ago. when i was ago. i can imagine me when i was in my early twenties. i mean, i'm on boxing day. i'll be the circus. i was the circus circus. i was at the circus tavern in purfleet, that top box of pre—diabetes of quality street pre—diabetes notepad to try and notepad and we used to try and get in paper to try and get it in the paper to try and boost the that it used to get because it was only it was its knees, it really was. and now it's big and we saw it's a big, big event and we saw a few match. i mean, doesn't doesn't regime and so the 27 doesn't regime now and so the 27 they have like a hiatus around christmas it gets going the world pdc world championships the pdc world before world championships before christmas then they break for three days then three or four days and then regimes again 27th. but joe regimes again on 27th. but joe cullen, clayton cross cullen, johnny clayton rob cross all peter right all through peter peter. right who tournament so the who won the tournament so the last couple of years he's also still in the tournament. well so who up christmas. who picks up after christmas. but just a that but yeah this is just a that maybe it's diluted slightly my concern from from concern when they move from from circus the ali back in circus tavern to the ali back in two seven i joined two thousand and seven i joined
7:36 am
the of the world that year. the news of the world that year. so i wasn't actually too so i mean having done all that work for think free for them, i think the free labour you darts in way. labour you darts in a way. well colombia. was by then colombia. yeah i was by then anyway. so when it when it moved i was worried that they, i was worried that how they, how they'd to from an 800 they'd have to go from an 800 arena 6000. and i went arena to 6000. and when i went as fan they achieved it as a fan they achieved it because i my concern was they would the pub atmosphere would lose the pub atmosphere and if you're and they didn't but if you're going to go down that road, although of all the success or down but dilute the down the years but dilute the competition anybody competition by letting anybody come ukrainian come in. it was a ukrainian bloke wasn't up to bloke who clearly wasn't up to standard. you got standard. and, you know, you got the charities. that's sort the charities. well, that's sort of i mean, you know, i mean, of me. i mean, you know, i mean, i know people say we've only thrown darts. having said that, if to go, get to go, if you can get to go, get to go, do go. it's fantastic you're so, so north—east london and so good north—east london and the transport the middle nowhere. transport pubuc the middle nowhere. transport public if go public is rubbish. but if you go it's well worth going for a good day out good. yeah. whole day. i mean could do an afternoon mean you could do an afternoon session session. i session and evening session. i mean never got these mean you never got to see these actually. a lot of actually. yeah. so a lot of people yes up as well. it's people do. yes up as well. it's massively, i mean i haven't, i haven't i sometimes used to, you
7:37 am
know, the cards. yeah well now that govern what that now actually govern what you over what you can, they're quite over what you can, they're quite over what you now used to you write on it now they used to see horrific stuff back in see some horrific stuff back in the i horrific in a the days. i mean horrific in a comedy way. i mean pardew comedy way. i mean alan pardew was best time at the time. was the best time at the time. i mean about 500 people one day just held the west ham fans hold your outside you out. your placards outside you out. there's to with there's nothing to do with darts. i didn't. would he be darts. oh i didn't. would he be joining again? like, oh, joining us again? like, oh, kosovo you can't rid of me? kosovo you can't get rid of me? but through but scots or to go through a bit. well my menu if you. yeah, yeah you can bring in more to come more to come including the latest headlines in today's papers. we'll be looking now at its response and its response tom slater and political commentator remember political commentator i remember now
7:38 am

7:41 am
it does it does play the santa clara sox in fall and what can only be described as gyrating a family show this may okay it's a family show this may okay it's a family show this may okay it's a family show is four in the morning this is smart and there's a winter backdrop . well there's a winter backdrop. well as the sun all out it's amazing why does that noise drive you bonkers? they wouldn't be playing that on repeat constantly. well, thank you very much. you can you make the trees coming in? you know , drill by coming in? you know, drill by now, ladies and gents, let's see if can crown someone with the best by the way, lee on set and one before we say a lot of buckingham palace ponies whitehaven holes so he actually is so you got that is royalty oh so you got that you got that one out as you can see it just emailed me mainly on play see it just emailed me mainly on play on. yes. yeah. clearing up . clearing opening. yeah i saw the side of his house and i thought i think you layered. right. okay, let's take look at today's front page is shall we. the times leads rishi sunak's plans lure early retirees plans to lure early retirees back into work with the headline over fifties encouraged to end
7:42 am
early retirement. the telegraph leads with the rise and spending with an estimated billion pounds extra needed for the ministry of defence to . avoid real time cuts defence to. avoid real time cuts over the next two years. the guardian a stay on the topic of strikes on how unions are reportedly ministers of causing festive chaos. the daily mail takes a different angle on strikes, claiming the nhs are wasting millions on work on jobs as frontline workers strike for better pay . we go on. finally better pay. we go on. finally we've got the mirror they are leading with what we expect from charles's first christmas speech as with the headline always close mama. oh now i think it will be sad tomorrow. actually when he does his king's speech. i think it would be people realise, i think for the first time we don't have her time that we don't have her majesty longer. majesty with us any longer. very, sad. right. time very, very sad. all right. time to go through papers now. and joining us this morning is, the editor tom slater and editor of spite, tom slater and journalist emma journalist and playwright emma bond. to you. bond. now, good morning to you. emma, start with shall
7:43 am
emma, should we start with shall we and the front of the times at retirement over fifties encouraged to end retirement and get back to work. yeah this is a classic government announcement . it's in many ways. classic government announcement . it's in many ways . the thing . it's in many ways. the thing is , a people who have retired is, a people who have retired have done so because they've done their finances and they've worked out that they can afford to. they chosen a different lifestyle . it is quite difficult lifestyle. it is quite difficult to tempt someone from that different lifestyle . but also we different lifestyle. but also we keep over fifties as if is one lump group between 50 and they stand to be retirement age and actually if you're 50, you might have 15 years ahead of you. you can retrain, have your cv as rishi said next talking about maybe go in to learn a new skill and so if you're 60 to 60, 62, 63, you're not going to do that. and actually, the working opfions and actually, the working options for you are considerably narrowed . and i think it's narrowed. and i think it's really important when we lump
7:44 am
everyone together like this that we don't make mistake because an offer for someone 51, 52 who's gone for early retirement will be completely different from someone in that age group . yeah. someone in that age group. yeah. tom, i'll bring you in on this. mean he's desperately just trying to tax people. yeah. i mean , is a kind of underlying mean, is a kind of underlying striking here, which is the amount of people who are kind of economically inactive, who probably work. and that's not about squeezing the pips out of people. very important people. it's very important people. it's very important people have something to do with their them sense their time. it gives them sense of in life and on. of purpose in life and so on. i'm not entirely sure the problem necessarily all problem is necessarily all people early retirement, people took early retirement, though this is quite and profound which profound problem, which was also really pandemic and the really by the pandemic and the lockdowns so on. a of lockdowns and so on. a lot of people went off the map and people just went off the map and the really came the workforce never really came back. it does. it back. but yeah, it does. it does. you're talking about does. when you're talking about things brushstroke things in such broad brushstroke as saying, it doesn't as i was saying, it doesn't necessarily get full complexity of matter. no. and you said of the matter. no. and you said that of the finances in that people of the finances in order be to retire and order will be able to retire and will clearly never retire. no,
7:45 am
i've both and will i've done many both and i will die this chair. well, tom die in this chair. well, tom writes you obviously, you know, in the times yes story here about , british volunteers out in about, british volunteers out in ukraine and they've been spending their christmas. so one of which is chris garrity, the former tree surgeon and he's going to be spending his time defusing explosives, essentially anti—tank mines and missiles and things and driving around, as well as delivering a lot of humanitarian aid. chris in this particular story is a self—funded volunteer. he's not working military working with the military directly. out directly. it's just going out there on own steam. and it there on his own steam. and it it's reminder of that it's just a reminder of that amazing internationalism real internationalism not sharing. if you and having a second home in the south of france as some would have genuinely put would have but genuinely put your line for another your lives on line for another nation's cause is really inspiring. it's incredible, isn't it's not it's isn't it? i mean, it's not it's not war. but to go over, do not our war. but to go over, do that another country mean that for another country mean especially year, especially this time of year, i mean, it really really is incredible. cold as. well, incredible. it's cold as. well, yeah, minus 15 or yeah, right. minus 15 or something. no, no. i think that the british solidarity with ukraine been something that left
7:46 am
right labour, conservative, whatever you are , you can be whatever you are, you can be really, really proud of. i will be christmas with the be spending christmas with the ukrainian and son, are ukrainian mother and son, are living with my parents at the moment and i haven't met them yet. they've only just arrived at and i think that again that's an exemplar of the that we've all pulled together this isn't this isn't partisan it's something that i think we're all really quite proud of and can come together over and that sense of , as come together over and that sense of, as tom come together over and that sense of , as tom says, sense of, as tom says, international solidarity and a real understanding that this war may not be our war, but it matters to us. and i think that's been quite british isn't there about, you know, the second world war and the blitz and coming together and standing strong. and that's what we're seeing with the ukrainians. yeah, that's quite british about about the way that responding to that. about the way that responding to that . emma, about the way that responding to that. emma, as we look at train fares , shall we. because not fares, shall we. because not only are trains not running, but they're getting more they're also getting more expensive. i mean, if you expensive. yeah i mean, if you live of london , you may well live of london, you may well have asked what the train
7:47 am
strikes actually made because the odds of getting a train seem to be reducing on a daily basis . and so the response of the train companies is to put fares up train companies is to put fares ”p by train companies is to put fares up by nearly 6. that makes to me. so there is a real sense that people who have that working from home is considered easier and that we live in a much more digital connected world. they're not going to be getting these trains anymore . getting these trains anymore. and we need a certain amount of interconnectivity . we are very interconnectivity. we are very bad. for example, in this country, travelling east to west rather than just north south. but we need a sense that is going to be affordable people and i just don't see that coming any time soon. no, no. so i mean, it does say i mean, occasionally when i'm driving back up course up north tomorrow, i can't get drunk and can't get train . no, but to be can't get train. no, but to be fair, i train a lot of the time anyway . i fair, i train a lot of the time anyway. i mean, i don't want to name names, but avanti coast.
7:48 am
shocking. get people will be wondering what earth we're paying wondering what earth we're paying for. well, i think that's exactly i think part of this is partly behind the surprising level or , you know, historically level or, you know, historically is quite surprising a high level of public support for the strikes as because of strikes as well as because of the that people recognise, the fact that people recognise, given the railways, given the state of the railways, given the state of the railways, given fact that were given the fact that you were still these companies, still having these companies, extracting the extracting profits during the pandemic? no one's really blaming train , god the blaming the train, god or the driver that problem. you driver for that problem. you know, it's quite clear that a really stark issue here in this and people will and we're many people will struggle difference from struggle to see difference from one strike space to just another, day of another, supposedly day of normal service. you know, we took toll on our time in the took a toll on our time in the telegraph. yeah. so this is telegraph. yes. yeah. so this is the ongoing eu the ongoing story of eu corruption, which been corruption, which has been really striking. mean, the really striking. i mean, the scale what talking about scale of what talking about here, calling the 44 year here, either calling the 44 year old former one of the vice presidents of the european part of this operation , lobbying on of this operation, lobbying on behalf of cattle where they found almost behalf of cattle where they found almos t ,1,000,000,000 found almost ,1,000,000,000 worth of cash in these various eurocrats homes. so quite

striking. such a kind of crude corruption scandal by any kind of measure. i'm just always quite struck by with some honourable exceptions, how little coverage the story sort of generated. it hasn't really through. and i think it is a bit of a reminder that people don't pay of a reminder that people don't pay much attention to the european union, not least because is ultimately because it is ultimately something doesn't you something which doesn't you know, it doesn't have that kind of extra level scrutiny and of extra level of scrutiny and democratic accountability. the genuine democratic system does. and think it's because and also, i think it's because of eu is so of the that the eu is so anti—democratic. you do have a bit more room these lobby bit more room for these lobby groups to operate. i some of the research analysts over the years so really striking story so yeah a really striking story really heart of a really gets to the heart of a lot the fundamental problems lot of the fundamental problems of european, but also the of in the european, but also the lack intra even from media lack of intra even from media claims be very european i claims to be very european i think is quite interesting. yeah, that is interesting. i must say was quite startled by must say i was quite startled by you as well, outside you said as well, like outside of how crude it of fraserburgh how crude it wasn't bags of cash like wasn't just bags of cash like something out cartoon you. something out of a cartoon you. yeah sort say over yeah i'm sort say over briefcases and then you know i but i'm mostly on the radar as
7:50 am
well i really good point emma i think completely different in sum is we hate white christmas by one so much that we're trying to ban. yeah and couple are apparently trying to buy the rights to white christmas so that they can stop it ever being played again on the radio now look at this strikes as the kind of anti free speech step that the gp news should be campaigning against and the slightly serious point why christmas was released the same year as do they know it's christmas by band date and band have in perpetuity donated their royalties to anti famine charities that still to this day as far as i know so actually if you stop it being played on the radio you're robbing charity christmas. yeah it's almost like they haven't thought it through amazing. yeah they haven't bothered to into who's christmas number this year. ladbaby again honestly christmas number one any number one. i'm 47 says well out of my comfort side, but is

7:56 am
will be pretty mild and windy. going to be some rain around as well. conditions are well. but colder conditions are on the way for boxing day. here's big picture. low pressure in control. it's wafting in mild and with that milder air, plenty of showers as . in fact, this of showers as. in fact, this morning we do have some snow falling over northern scotland, mostly over hills, but some for a time getting down to lower levels should tend to fizzle out through the day. and actually for most places, it's a dry and a bright christmas eve. there'll be decent spells of be some decent spells of sunshine will sunshine the winds will strengthen later certainly this afternoon showers for . afternoon some showers for. wales ireland. it wales and northern ireland. it could be on the heavy side. it is to be mild temperatures reaching , double figures across reaching, double figures across the south and even further north of little warmer than of scotland, little warmer than it still fairly it was yesterday. still fairly cold in the far north with the wet weather getting wet and weather here getting blustery everywhere this afternoon and through this evening. moving evening. heavy showers moving into across scotland, into wave across scotland, northern england , too, and northern england, too, and eventually into the midlands . so eventually into the midlands. so it's a showery and blustery start to christmas day. it won't
7:57 am
be a cold start . these showers be a cold start. these showers will be of rain. be a cold start. these showers will be of rain . you're not will be of rain. you're not going to wake up to anything deep and crisp and even with these kind of temperatures 5 to 8 degrees as we start christmas day it is to be a day of showers. then with some bright or sunny spells in between it is going to be fairly windy as well, which means showers will move through quite a lot of cloud across anglia in the cloud across east anglia in the southeast some more southeast with some more persistent for persistent perhaps here for a time showers elsewhere, not time. showers elsewhere, but not everywhere seeing the showers. some places northern northern scotland may actually have a largely dry day. it going to be mild with temperatures getting up figures almost up to double figures almost across the board, eight or nine across the board, eight or nine across scotland and northern ireland day northerly ireland late the day northerly winds setting bring some snow winds setting in bring some snow showers to northwest scotland. christmas cold christmas day night, that cold arrives for all of us on boxing when there could well be some more showers. western more snow showers. western scotland. christmas . i'm scotland. merry christmas. i'm portillo join me on gb news on a sunday morning for topical

7:59 am
8:00 am
well sets off early everybody that so warning of christmas eve travel misery as more walkouts begin on the railways . good begin on the railways. good morning. it's 8:00 on christmas eve, saturday, the 24th of december. this is breakfast on gb news of patrick christys and ellie costello. here we go. top stories this morning. right. well, workers , they go on strike
8:01 am
well, workers, they go on strike again, don't they? millions making their way home for christmas warned that christmas are warned that it could chaos britain's could be chaos on britain's roads there'll no last roads. there'll be no last minute deliveries either as royal mail workers strike for a second consecutive day . unions second consecutive day. unions warn they won't be backing down as they fight for a better deal. well, a royal milestone now because king charles iii, will pay because king charles iii, will pay tribute to his late mother in his first christmas message to the nation . and a christmas to the nation. and a christmas phone call, prime minister rishi sunak decides not to do a traditional message , instead traditional message, instead calling public servants to thank them for their service . and some them for their service. and some of you have been getting in touch with your christmas trees. in fact, not just some of you loads. if you be getting search for christmas trees. and we for your christmas trees. and we love it, please keep them love to say it, please keep them coming. oh, so cheeky on coming. gb, gb oh, so cheeky on that. here's to will hollis as well, isn't it . yep. top points. well, isn't it. yep. top points. the top points .
8:02 am
well, isn't it. yep. top points. the top points. happy nearly christmas, everybody. good morning . good morning. now our morning. good morning. now our top story. get ready for more trouble. cut down when it gets lighters. the hour goes on. more traffic with families traffic chaos with families driving home for the festive period. you're being told to brace disruptions further brace for disruptions as further airstrikes yes airstrikes kick off m6pm. yes network rail is advising passengers to travel today only if aps are lutely necessary, which is quite difficult if you are trying to get to your family for christmas. they're also saying most should saying that most people should try complete their journeys try and complete their journeys by in latest by 3 pm. so in the latest strikes in the up to strikes in the run up to christmas border force staff as well postal are also well as postal workers are also walking and conditions. walking over pay and conditions. the minister has the prime minister has apologised the christmas travel disruption that disruption but insists that pubuc disruption but insists that public sector pay must be controlled while will holidays is back again. you can't keep him away. well, oh, it's getting lighter . well, it's getting lighter. well, it's getting late. our east reporter and our second railway station. good morning . mean, it getting morning. i mean, is it getting is it getting anything like it's busy ? it's all as it should be. busy? it's all as it should be. yes. it'sjust busy? it's all as it should be. yes. it's just it's just empty. there isn't it's barren . no no.
8:03 am
there isn't it's barren. no no. it's still very quiet . i think a it's still very quiet. i think a couple of the f a couple of the cafes inside are open. there's a lot of people doing deliveries to the local shops because this is quite a busy part of the city centre. footfall seems to be quite low. i haven't seen anybody coming off of trains for at least the last hour or so and i haven't seen anybody waiting for trains too. there was one gentleman who said he was expecting crosscountry expecting his crosscountry train, which is running in and out of the station to get him to bath. he was expecting that to run, but here in the east midlands, no east midlands railway trains are running except for a very small service between corby and st pancras . between corby and st pancras. that's going to be very limited . it's going to be very much the same picture no matter where you go. lots of routes have been closed altogether . lots of train closed altogether. lots of train stations have been closed altogether. the advice is to do your journeys. altogether. the advice is to do yourjourneys. if you have altogether. the advice is to do your journeys. if you have to. if they are absolutely necessary as early as possible because
8:04 am
most trains are going to be terminated at about 3:00 ahead of the rail strike for rmt, which officially starts at around 6 pm. thousands of members of rmt. there are of course other unions on strike today in different parts of the country. unite are on strike right now here at this particular station . of course, particular station. of course, those affected those trains means that some people can't carry on their journeys. lots of people will have already made new arrangements. but for one group of people that i met, a group of people that i met, a group of people that i met, a group of croatian university students who were studying here at one of the local universities , they were telling me a little bit their when bit about their troubles when they train station they got to the train station this morning at around 6 am. it's going to manchester airport as well . was supposed to take as well. i was supposed to take the train sheffield then the train to sheffield and then from sheffield to manchester. but yeah , there is no train. so but yeah, there is no train. so now i have to grab an uber. i'm going home to croatia for christmas. yeah, i'm hoping to get home by christmas , but we'll get home by christmas, but we'll see . i was supposed to catch see. i was supposed to catch a train to manchester to go for
8:05 am
home for christmas , to croatia, home for christmas, to croatia, actually, to visit our families. but unfortunately , we couldn't but unfortunately, we couldn't get the train because of the strikes, even though we bought our tickets on the website. but it turned out not being any available trains to. well, i'm a bit frustrated that the train isn't running, especially because there was little notice that it's not going to go. i thought the strike would be affected. like from six onwards. that's at least what we saw on. oh, well , we need to find oh, well, we need to find another solution. it's probably going to be an over. we don't know exactly that. we'll see what we can find and it is what it is. but i understand the situation. it definitely makes sense. it could have been planned out a bit better. so we don't get in this situation to arrive here and not ask ourselves, what are going to do . yes. well, of course, this really is the culmination of a year of strikes been going on for particularly the last six months. it really is about two
8:06 am
big things. obviously inflation is the figure that most unions would want to get for their members . would want to get for their members. that's would want to get for their members . that's still would want to get for their members. that's still around 10. but the other really big one is a few of the people that are working today on the trains from the local train operator that they told me it really is about protecting their jobs in conditions . one man was telling conditions. one man was telling me that he's worked on the trains for about four decades and he's really in a difficult position, wondering what's going to happen to the rest of his career because he's thinking, is his going safe in the his job going to be safe in the future? some of things that future? some of the things that the that they're the unions say that they're trying protect are, for trying to protect are, for example, working in example, people working in chaos, train drivers chaos, guards like train drivers and train guards , because and train guards, because there's conversation about having driverless trains as well as another big one. nobody wants to be working on a sunday and unsociable hours is a bit of a sticking point between the unions and the operators. sticking point between the unions and the operators . yeah, unions and the operators. yeah, well, really complicated well, it's really complicated issue, isn't it? and listening to those croatian students that you spoke to there, they're talking about how and again ,
8:07 am
talking about how and again, uber airport from uber to manchester airport from nottingham, they're being forced onto the roads because they can't train . it's going to can't get a train. it's going to be case lots of people be the case for lots of people today, it? well yes. well, today, isn't it? well yes. well, it's the conversation that i was having with those university students was that it was going to be around 150 to £200 for their uber. i think they went off and they've got it now. they said that the flight to croatia from manchester was at around midday . of course it's not just midday. of course it's not just getting on the planes, also getting on the planes, also getting on the roads. it's going to be a bit trickier because 17 million cars are on the roads today. million cars are on the roads today . according to the a lot of today. according to the a lot of people that might have got the trains are instead going to be getting in cars or instead getting in cars or instead getting on coach services like national express. those coach operators say that they've put on a number of extra trains , a on a number of extra trains, a number of extra coaches today so that they can get around and get people to where they need to be today. people to where they need to be today . absolutely. well, thank today. absolutely. well, thank
8:08 am
you very , very much. my always you very, very much. my always absolute pleasure . you doing absolute pleasure. you doing stellar work for us from outside nottingham train station there. and course reporting on the and of course reporting on the fact of people are fact that loads of people are going to be driving home going to have to be driving home for aren't they? for christmas. well aren't they? and help but notice that and i can't help but notice that the sun is starting to come out a little bit there. previous viewers known that you viewers will have known that you did yeah, will be did promise. yeah, it is will be as now is will remember as he was now is will remember that you said he did belt out a little bit of a song for us. there is going i'm dream man of what . and now just like the ones what. and now just like the ones iused what. and now just like the ones i used to know oh you're james day's be merry and bright, right? and this is the big finish. oh, mayo , your christmas finish. oh, mayo, your christmas is be what ? oh, well, as you is be what? oh, well, as you said. so let my oh so hard. well all this everyone it's for that will hopefully if i just did
8:09 am
that i can't but well done can't believe that one of the crooner he's a crooner practising he has a tone shift now let's jasmine very much a tone shift. you remember , of course, the big remember, of course, the big news from yesterday. anyway very disturbing news, actually , disturbing news, actually, because a woman and two men have been killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire a kurdish community fire at a kurdish community centre in paris. protesters clashed police officers clashed with police officers around the incident took around where the incident took place. meanwhile, the french president, emmanuel macron condemned , condemned the incident, describing it as a heinous attack the kurdish community. attack on the kurdish community. we joined now in the studio we are joined now in the studio by chazan, who is a paris by david chazan, who is a paris correspondent at the telegraph. good morning. good morning, david. really disturbing scenes in paris yesterday . just tell us in paris yesterday. just tell us what we know so far about what happened. well you described the attack. the gunmen , who is attack. the gunmen, who is described as a 69 year old retired train driver, has been arrested. he was overpowered by local people shortly after the
8:10 am
shooting and the police then took him away. many saw after the attack. so he allegedly walked into the two kurdish cultural centre, first fired several shots in there, then went into a hairdressing salon which is next to the cultural centre , fired some more shots centre, fired some more shots there. and then a apparently went in to the bathroom and attempted to reload his handgun and that's when the owner of the hair salon and several other people went in there and overpowered him and took his weapon away. now, this is a man who has form . he was only who has form. he was only released from custody less than two weeks ago. he was awaiting trial for what's believed to have been another racially motivated attack where he took a sword and went into a migrant camp , sword and went into a migrant camp, stabbed sword and went into a migrant camp , stabbed two people, not camp, stabbed two people, not fatally, and slashed their tent.
8:11 am
so there's going to be a lot of questions now about why this man was released , if he was was released, if he was dangerous, how come he had a gun? why didn't the police vet improperly or you ? yeah. going improperly or you? yeah. going to be. well, absolutely. and that's one of the reasons why there were protests yesterday, i believe, to yesterday . and i was believe, to yesterday. and i was live on our when the riots protest if you want to call them really broke out and it looks that we have the potential to get in credibly nasty incredibly quickly to police as elements of the kurdish community has. that kind of calmed down now? is this something still simmering? no, the protests have calmed down now, but they did last for a few hours and calm wasn't restored until about 7 pm. paris time. so it was a good three or 4 hours, to be honest with you. i think the television pictures probably look a little bit worse than the situation in actually was . what seems to have happened was. what seems to have happened is that the interior minister
8:12 am
went to the scene to express solidarity with the kurdish community and so on, and french police operating the way they do. there were a lot of them. some of them were in full riot gean some of them were in full riot gear. they immediately threw up a security cordon around the minister. now, that seems to have infuriated some of the protesters who believe that the kurdish community is not adequately protect acted by the french state. and they started hurling rocks at the police who responded with tear gas. so i think there's two different perceptions of this attack. for most french people, it's a racially motivated attack by a man who, for whatever reason , man who, for whatever reason, doesn't like foreigners, doesn't like immigrants for the kurdish community, this has revived traumatic memories of the killings of three female kurdish activists. in just that same area of paris.
8:13 am
activists. in just that same area of paris . almost ten years area of paris. almost ten years ago . now, a turkish citizen was ago. now, a turkish citizen was arrested for those killings , but arrested for those killings, but it's widely believed among the kurdish community in paris that the turkish state was somehow behind those killings. and the man arrested died before he could be brought to trial . and could be brought to trial. and so even though they realise that this was a frenchman who carried out this attack yesterday day, many of the many members of the kurdish community in paris still continue to believe that the turkish state was somehow involved in this terrorism . involved in this terrorism. really good to have you in the studio talking about online what happenedin studio talking about online what happened in paris yesterday. really disturbing detail there. but thank you for sharing that with us. like you said, for with us. and like you said, for the kurdish there, the kurdish community there, feel history is feel as though history is repeating a similar repeating itself. a similar attack ten years ago. and did emmanuel macron's comments go far enough? well, well, no. it is difficult to say that they
8:14 am
did, didn't they? will bring you the latest on that as and when we more information as well we get more information as well on that in france. on that incident in france. i surprise yesterday , but i think surprise yesterday, but i think it's surprise yesterday, but i think wsfime surprise yesterday, but i think it's time now for us bring it's time now for us to bring you to it. these are the you up to date it. these are the other stories that are going on today. a number of people die today. a number of people to die from blisteringly from the blisteringly cold weather risen to weather in the us has risen to 13. four people have been confirmed others confirmed dead and many others injured a massive car crash injured in a massive car crash caused extreme ice on the caused by extreme ice on the ohio turnpike in erie county. temperatures plunged as low as —45 degrees in some areas . the —45 degrees in some areas. the storm is forecast to develop into what's being described as a bomb cyclone, bringing with it heavy , blinding snow. bomb cyclone, bringing with it heavy , blinding snow . and the us heavy, blinding snow. and the us congress has passed . a £37 congress has passed. a £37 billion emergency aid bill for ukraine. the record military funding follows president volodymyr zelenskyy visit to washington on wednesday. his first foreign trip since the start of russia's invasion. the bill, which passed only hours before the midnight deadline, was actually hotly contested . was actually hotly contested. conservative republicans, who
8:15 am
raised concerns about the level of us support for ukraine. the nhs is warning parents about the risks of swallowing toy parts as more and more children are going to hospital over it. the number of children and vegetables sold having consumed a small object has doubled over the last ten years to almost 230. doctors are mainly worried about penny sized batteries that make up part of several household items like festive lives and tv remotes . festive lives and tv remotes. while more than 32 pubs in england and wales have closed each month this year as rising costs have forced businesses to shut. property group outa says that the overall number of pubs has gone down by almost 400, as pubs grapple with soaring energy costs rising food prices and of course decreasing demand . well, course decreasing demand. well, tomorrow at 3 pm, we will see
8:16 am
king charles, his first christmas speech . his majesty, christmas speech. his majesty, the king will be paying tribute to the late queen. yes, absolutely. will be emotional , absolutely. will be emotional, no doubt. this will be the first televised christmas speech by a sitting king in british history, which you he set out loud is bonkers. this is amazing. yeah, it is incredible. joining us now is royal commentator is rafe rafe heydel—mankoo. rafe, fantastic to have you. if just leave happy nearly christmas to you. of course. what can we expect from charles, the expect from king charles, the first christmas speech first televised christmas speech by a king? yes. i mean, this is a speech of profound historical significance. years significance. is 90 years actually very first actually since the very first speech, king george the fifth, delivered so important delivered in 1932. so important for that event in itself . also for that event in itself. also 70. is this the queen's first christmas speech was delivered in 1952, and the king is only the third king in history to have delivered a christmas speech. his great grandfather, george the fifth, his great uncle, it was the eighth, didn't read long enough to give a speech , but then his speech, but then his grandfather, george grandfather, king george the sixth, 1951. so sixth, did up until 1951. so it's amazing to think of 90 as

almost of those was just almost 70 of those was just around queen delivering those speeches. around queen delivering those speeches . this of speeches. and this will, of course, the first televised course, be the first televised one and inspired decision, i think, to have it in st george's chapel think, to have it in st george's chapel, windsor, obviously, where his parents now lying where his parents are now lying at together with his at rest together with his mother's committal service only taking a few weeks ago, taking place a few weeks ago, really in september. and i think it be inconceivable if he it would be inconceivable if he didn't tribute to her didn't pay tribute to her extraordinary reign legacy, extraordinary reign and legacy, which culminated it, of course, in the glorious platinum jubilee, which saw over the jubilee, which we saw over the summer perfect cherry on summer, the perfect cherry on the cake of a life of service . the cake of a life of service. you know, when the queen gave her first, well, her last christmas was actually christmas message was actually a tribute her late husband who tribute to her late husband who had died. her first christmas message tribute her message was a tribute to her father, had died . and father, who had just died. and then also pledged herself to then she also pledged herself to then she also pledged herself to the and said that she the country and said that she will carry on his traditions. and i think we can expect the same the king. will same thing from the king. will be emotional viewing, won't same thing from the king. will be for emotional viewing, won't same thing from the king. will be for many tional viewing, won't same thing from the king. will be for many british yiewing, won't same thing from the king. will be for many british people? won't same thing from the king. will be for many british people? ion't it, for many british people? i was patrick earlier, i was saying to patrick earlier, i think many it won't think for many people it won't hit really until they sit hit home really until they sit down on christmas day 3 pm, as they always have . and it's not
8:18 am
they always have. and it's not her majesty screen. it's her majesty on the screen. it's her he her son in the stage. and he will have to strike that balance, won't he, between his own christmas message also own christmas message and also relaying that i'm relaying that emotion that i'm sure people will feel sure so many people will feel for. people the for. millions people across the country across the country and indeed across the commonwealth. you're quite commonwealth. so you're quite right, christmas right, the queen's christmas speech much part of speech is as much part of the christmas tradition and christmas tradition and christmas brussels christmas day as brussels sprouts probably enjoyed lot sprouts probably enjoyed a lot more people than others. more by some people than others. and to have someone else and i think to have someone else deliver speech really deliver that speech will really be quite shock to some people be quite a shock to some people because such a part of our because it's such a part of our established tradition. you established tradition. but, you know, monarch makes the know, every monarch makes the christmas own . we christmas speech their own. we know that this is actually a moment, the one of the moment, the one moment of the year the sovereign writes year when the sovereign writes their speech, the queen their own speech, the queen always with her own speech, with always with her own speech, with a input from prince a bit of input from prince philip and his staff, but no government interference. a rare chance someone speak chance to have someone speak from the soul. we of from the soul. and we know, of course, has a lot of course, the king has a lot of passionate things. passionate views on things. usually you from world usually you draw from world events. the events. the commonwealth, the nation, reflect on your nation, but also reflect on your own family. and i think we can see more of that coming tomorrow. indeed. and just tomorrow. yes indeed. and just remind i'm curious,
8:19 am
remind us, look, i'm curious, what is it? because there won't be the first time or the last time. taking place? time. is it taking place? because always manage because i always seem to manage to up . it's had the same to mess it up. it's had the same time since 19, which is just 3 pm. patrick as you watch, what p.m. patrick as you watch, what did you notice we were have lunch right next to christmas speech. good way to do it. and that was because a 3 pm. was the best time for everyone in the best time for everyone in the empire to be awake. apart from people in australia and new zealand. captured most zealand. but you captured most of at 3 pm. for of the world at 3 pm. for that's so i'd say it was a good question was going to keep very much. yes. so it's quite interesting that sat there interesting that you sat there about perhaps talking about his own family . will touch upon own family. will he touch upon harry and meghan and documentary that's been all over netflix in the past couple of weeks. i mean, you said before that very much loved members of the family. do you think we'll hear anything that? and well, anything like that? and well, we don't have to wait don't know yet. we have to wait and but we should we and see. but we should we shouldn't surprised if he shouldn't be surprised if he does them, as did in does mention them, as he did in his first when he his first speech when he ascended throne. the ascended to the throne. the king's has to love
8:20 am
king's policy has been to love bomb the sussexes by showering them matter them with affection no matter what say, and to rise above what they say, and to rise above it, which i think is quite a sensible power play. and of course have to remember that course you have to remember that this was recorded before this was recorded just before the episodes of the last three episodes of netflix should netflix to which should be mentioned, really mentioned, but i think really the is a father first and the king's is a father first and foremost. and while the british nafion foremost. and while the british nation have given up on the nation may have given up on the sussexes for the king, sussexes very much for the king, i it's question of i think it's a question of turning other cheek and turning the other cheek and keeping open for his keeping the door open for his prodigal could be prodigal son. and what could be more than that, more christian than that, especially christmas time? especially at christmas time? well, that, it? well, exactly that, isn't it? i mean, at christmas, especially , mean, at christmas, especially, he's an example he's got to set an example as part of his role, part of his duty, and maybe he can do that by well, at least not maybe saying say. but saying what the nation say. but thank very much. to thank you very much. great to have and yes, we have have you on. and yes, we have a fantastic you're doing a great homework. that royal commentator just reacting to the father. yes. we're going to be here at 3 pm. tomorrow. at 3 pm, we've p.m. tomorrow. at 3 pm, we've got the king's speech. we can't get busy lunchtimes where get too busy at lunchtimes where i our is our watch i right now, our is our watch walking working on yeah with you
8:21 am
oh you get to know your on the ball patrick you know what's going on with me also right let we go right more to cover the lessons in the world are so busy katie what is hitting our screens this festive period. rachel you stay tuned for that .
8:22 am
8:23 am
welcome back. you are watching and listening to breakfast with patrick christys and ellie costello. yes well, now forget the presence of christmas dinner, because what we really want to know is what we can watch on the box, apart from of course, this is a point a segment, because you all will be glued to tv calls the day of. absolutely, of course. but if you've eaten too much, then you might want to relax in front of the there's plenty of the tv. there's plenty of christmas you christmas specials to keep you entertained next few entertained over the next few days, very happy days, so we're very happy to know that stephanie's she
8:24 am
know that stephanie's head. she joins the studio now joins us in the studio now to talk through oh fabulous, talk us through it. oh fabulous, by the way, christmas tree . oh by the way, christmas tree. oh the amazing any time of year , the amazing any time of year, the amazing any time of year, the stress is going to come out of the night. it stays tucked in the wardrobe . part of what the wardrobe. part of what you're us on the song you're putting us on the song down. so is like a competition with sequins for you? patrick yeah, i might have some earrings in the background, so what's was patrick tomorrow, right? what's coming out ? well, it's all about coming out? well, it's all about lounging in front of the tv for me. already have plans. all the tv going watch and. and tv i'm going to watch and. and there's for everybody. there's something for everybody. and will and kickstarting. the day will be boy , the mole, the fox be the boy, the mole, the fox and the horse. so this is the animated version of charlie mackenzie's children , but and mackenzie's children, but and it's very heartwarming , very it's very heartwarming, very endeanng it's very heartwarming, very endearing and there's going to be a cast of well—known actors. so it was elf will be playing the fox. tom hollander will be playing and gabriel playing the mole and gabriel vine will be the voice of the horse. so it's actually going to be on for 55 of bbc one tonight, but also am. tomorrow. it's
8:25 am
but also 9 am. tomorrow. it's so good they're doing it twice. so actually a little heads up because i clock off this morning . i'm not now not i'm not even usually white now so i can go home and watch for 55, 55 and tomorrow at 9 am. but you'll be on air. patrick so you miss it tomorrow. tomorrow, get out. don't forget. and then another festive classic is the snowman . festive classic is the snowman. and i love this time i've just seen the young david bowie in. and you know what? the snowman turns 40 this year. 40 is of action of the snowman . is that action of the snowman. is that that film walking the arrow ? that film walking the arrow? yeah, yeah . yes that's going and yeah, yeah. yes that's going and it's only 26 minutes, so i won't take too much of your take. yeah. and it's one that appeals to all generations . so that will to all generations. so that will be on 11 am. on channel 4. and then the next one is the king's speech, which we've been talking about all morning. so that's going to be on 3 pm, bbc one so this is the first time in seven decades we're going to have a new . he's going be new monarch. he's going to be talking year, what talking about the year, what we've has quite we've had, which has been quite monumental family.
8:26 am
monumental for the royal family. and he phoned to st george's chapels, usually the queen town in palace. there in buckingham palace. so there is be really that shift is going to be really that shift of so that will be of monarchy so that will be 3 pm. on bbc one. and if you want to watch something after this, the speech to be the king's speech is going to be aladdin, live retelling, aladdin, the live retelling, whether it's a 2019 version. so this is what i also forward to. yeah, that comes yeah, yeah. so that comes straight after the king's speech . again, will smith plays the genie on that. it's the live action remake, so it's not the cartoon. so you point entertaining. i haven't seen this yet. so going to wait this yet. so i'm going to wait till tomorrow. it looks great. and got the naughty and then we've got the naughty broadcast. as like to broadcast. this as i like to call them, channel 4. oh, all sorry . channel 4. they've got sorry. channel 4. they've got the alternative christmas message, what they do every year as alternative to the king's as an alternative to the king's speech this they're speech. so this year, they're going have the world's most going to have the world's most advanced air robots called mike . he's going to be delivering their christmas speech , and he's their christmas speech, and he's going be talking the going to be talking about the highs the lows of the year highs and the lows of the year by. also going to be by. and he's also going to be questioned human. i know questioned about human. i know i'm not expecting you to have
8:27 am
the answers. yeah but does the air a robot write its own speech 7 air a robot write its own speech ? he must stay because they're saying he's the most advanced robot . so i'm saying he's the most advanced robot. so i'm like, saying he's the most advanced robot . so i'm like, wow, must do robot. so i'm like, wow, must do some writing. and he's going to be delivering speech over be delivering the speech over the 20 minutes. 20 the course of 20 minutes. so 20 minute speech. yes. so this is going be fascinating . going to be quite fascinating. but thing about but the good thing about christmas tv, guys, it's a christmas tv, guys, it's a christmas day special. so we're going to have to strictly after last week's final , we're going last week's final, we're going to have a batch of to have a new batch of celebrities are going to be celebrities who are going to be competing christmas competing for the christmas glitterball trophy. so that's going including people going to be including people like d.j. ritchie, haywood williams, larry lamb and nicola roberts . wow. from girls aloud. roberts. wow. from girls aloud. so a good line—up as it is. and you know, it's a lot of intense pressure for them because they've got show to get they've only got one show to get it right so a christmas it right. so we have a christmas champion by the end of it. wait, so , yeah. do all this training? so, yeah. do all this training? yeah literally just for the one episode. just the way they know it. because i don't watch strictly, so i'm not about to guess again. ask me these. these people have people people have these people previously now
8:28 am
previously been on strictly now so waste that straight on. so that waste that straight on. no one off i'd if i'd be on the phone to my eight year old i have watched the i'd say i'll be obvious i know get me on the proper series. no because the series can be quite tax i'd love strictly but the series is quite taxing every week having to train and that i think this is just one big bang you're done . just one big bang you're done. well, the christmas well, i like the christmas special. with you this special. i'm with you on this topic. it's become beholden topic. oh, it's become beholden topic. oh, it's become beholden to the line up as well. for a while, you might forget viewing anyway. so i'll be interesting to see who wins, but we have other specials including quantum midwife doctor martin on itv. what guys ? the big thing for me what guys? the big thing for me is eastenders is yes, it's going to be i don't watch eastenders . to be i don't watch eastenders. i saw the outfit. yes my gosh, that looks explosive . it's going that looks explosive. it's going to be very explosive. producers have said it's going to be a tragic love story between mike , tragic love story between mike, mick and janine. so they're due to get married, but danny dyer's leaving the square. so they've
8:29 am
kept their lips sealed. what's going to happen to his character? but he could get killed off on christmas day . and killed off on christmas day. and it's wedding day and it's his wedding day. and janine, wedding day. and with janine, you know it's going to be trouble . someone's going to end trouble. someone's going to end up , i think, trouble. someone's going to end up, i think, soap trouble. someone's going to end up , i think, soap opera, real up, i think, soap opera, real life wedding day. but i mean, all the drama. so over your weddings. oh that's stuff of legend, don't i love a soap opera? and then when it goes bad.so opera? and then when it goes bad. so this is going to be on bbc one at 925. it's going to be an hour long special. but guys, if anyone doesn't want to watch any of the festive stuff, you can head over to netflix and the stuff like emily in paris, which has a new ten episode, ten episodes the new series and episodes and the new series and we've witcher with henry we've got the witcher with henry cavill will his last cavill and this will be his last season show. do you watch season in the show. do you watch a little bit of emily in paris? i watched the episode, my i watched the first episode, my first night . ooh, first episode last night. ooh, knowing i actually liked the factit knowing i actually liked the fact it oh, oh, oh. i really liked the version . it's very liked the version. it's very hot. t and i thought it was , it

8:33 am
present and she said, no, seriously, no , let's just not do seriously, no, let's just not do it because we always you end up just getting token gestures of clothes that she might already have. i'll just get it a bit wrong. i'm personally can i just wrong. i'm personally can ijust put there as a parent put this out there as a parent to anybody there who hasn't to anybody out there who hasn't got who's bring got kids, who's coming to bring presents for my kids? don't bnng presents for my kids? don't bring something that i have to build. that's not a present. that's not i'm i'm going to lose a day screwing little bits together, making little toys, get someone brought. and then a couple of years, guys have an amazing like , like a house amazing like, like a house thing. and i'm like , that's thing. and i'm like, that's three of my life. like, three days of my life. like, what would do that to what? why would you do that to me ? why? why would you? so no, me? why? why would you? so no, don't do that. involve more work. that's the main thing i'm with you on that. that's why i don't go to ikea. says i don't get the call. i don't go, why am i paying to build my own sofa? i don't that. but but yes. i don't get that. but but yes. i wonder if people might be cutting a little bit a cutting back a little bit a minute. patrick, minute. patrick patrick, patrick, went got patrick, when you went and got your egg mcmuffin your sausage and egg mcmuffin this , did they give you

8:35 am
appreciation. so no, we're we're scaling this scaling it down this year. i think it's right. i think everyone probably scanning it down we're down this year, but we're scaling this we're scaling it down this year. we're doing but i want to doing no prizes, but i want to share something with you, because i i think, again, because i think i think, again, only like me can pretty only someone like me can pretty share this. share a story like this. i remember you know, remember obviously, you know, with family immigrants. with a family of immigrants. so when in, you know, when we first came in, you know, first from growing up in this country and parents were country and my parents were like, know, had and we're like, you know, had us and we're doing christmas we doing christmas presents, we didn't don't really do didn't really we don't really do it stop started for the it to stop it started for the tree the yard. i remember the tree in the yard. i remember the first year we did presents in our family. my dad got our family. my dad only got a present for one of my sisters. there's me and sisters, there's me and two sisters, so it person the tree it was one person under the tree . why you so around? . why were you so around? watched her open her typewriter and i'm thinking, wow, we're really. we're really all happy for her. but then over the years, obviously, we've, you know, fully sold into know, we're not fully sold into the spirit as even the christmas spirit as even being see, you know, we're in we're in, we're set up. you know, the holidays, right? know, it's the holidays, right? so so in that respect now it's just become a huge connection affair for us as well. but i'll never forget that moment when
8:36 am
there time under the there was one time under the tree were just me. my tree and we were just me. my other sister just watched my eldest sister just thanks eldest sister just go, thanks a lot. we weren't allowed lot. and and we weren't allowed to use it of course, but now, now to take families. i now time to take families. i like over my sounds all like people over my sounds all cheesy the biggest the best cheesy but the biggest the best part of christmas is just everyone. i'm going cook for everyone. i'm going to cook for 1718 people will have three different meat, will have a load of veggie stock and nibbles and dnnks of veggie stock and nibbles and drinks and stuff. i love it. that's that's gift right that's that's the gift right there. that said, what's your plans for it? tell me, you hosting? yeah. yeah like 17 people. 17 people over. we have to have a couple tables together and stuff from my wife's family as well as my own family. and stuff from my wife's family as well as my own family . and i as well as my own family. and i know , i know. it's good. it's know, i know. it's good. it's chaos. the house is a tip at the end of it, but there's lots of memories. and now, you know, when you go through your memories and your pictures on your phone, you look back over the you see the kids the years and you see the kids growing here and growing up and everyone here and everyone on that table. everyone all on that table. we've now got about eight or
8:37 am
nine pictures, nine years with the pictures of everyone around the pictures of everyone around the and that's that's so the table. and that's that's so special. i think that's that's what love. what that's what i love. and i just i love eating to access. tell me about tell me about tell me about it. tell me about this. i didn't do it this morning. all right. thank you very i hope have a very much. i hope we have a wonderful christmas you and wonderful christmas to you and your family well. so your fabulous family as well. so i happy to see christmas i was happy to see christmas presents . i was happy to see christmas presents. he's i was happy to see christmas presents . he's got to check it presents. he's got to check it with this message because guarantee she's got him. yeah, this is what we do. and then we go the half day when we go in the half full day when we don't anything. absolutely. don't get anything. absolutely. what's the worst person i've ever ever received ? ever had? i've ever received? oh, i'm very spoilt, oh, i see. i'm very spoilt, especially because an only especially because i'm an only child . are so you would child. oh, are you so you would be the chosen one having all the gifts? i was always the chosen one in my birthday's in january, so get everything in the so used to get everything in the january it's further january sales. but it's further enough the enough away from christmas. the people couldn't pass me off with a for one present, so a two for one present, so i actually really i've had everything. win win everything. it's a win win situation. and that's how situation. yeah. and that's how you as you create someone is as horrendous the horrendous as this spoil the roster mate and think that the centre of the universe but there
8:38 am

8:39 am
perhaps i think. well, some people can really pull it off when like the white when it's like the bright white light. so for me, i like a warmer no. so you go, multicoloured? i don't know. have i going gold have you see? i going to gold everything. going to everything. and i was going to share a photo. but now i've been put to shame. i fell by the view as mine. mine's kind of minimalistic. supposed minimalistic. gold supposed gold flowers. gold lights. oh, fantastic. far, fantastic. right well, so far, leon from whitehaven is winning his lion yet , leon from whitehaven is winning his lion yet, but he does his regal lion yet, but he does live in whitehaven hall, which it does help appears to be live. buckingham palace . sir leon is buckingham palace. sir leon is winning , but if you think you winning, but if you think you can beat leon on getting to a gbviews@gbnews.uk with your fabulous christmas decorations yeah. trees you good gifts too ? yeah. trees you good gifts too? bad gifts. have you wrapped? what's on the menu tomorrow? just bring some fun and festive joy- just bring some fun and festive joy. festive joy program, please, but lots more to come . please, but lots more to come. stay we're going to be stay with us. we're going to be looking pages of looking at the front pages of today's newspapers . that's today's newspapers. that's all up this .
8:40 am
8:41 am
8:42 am
welcome back. you are watching and listening to breakfast with me, ellie costello and oh, first homework in together. oh there you go. first time for everything. right? okay so let's take a look at today's front pages, shall we? the times leads with rishi sunak's plans to lower early retirees back into work has been sinister, doesn't it, with the headline over fifties encouraged to end early retirement, the telegraph leads with the rise in defence spending with an estimated with the rise in defence spending with an estimate d £1 spending with an estimated £1 billion extra needed for the ministry of defence to avoid real time cuts over the next two years. indeed on the guardian stays on the topic of strikes, how unions are reportedly accusing ministers of causing festive trouble . chaos. the festive trouble. chaos. the daily takes a different daily mail takes a different angle on the strikes, claiming that are wasting that the nhs are wasting millions on work. non jobs as frontline workers strike for better pay. and finally the mirror leads with what we can
8:43 am
expect from . charles's first expect from. charles's first christmas speech as king. the headune christmas speech as king. the headline always close to mama , headline always close to mama, which is quite cute. i think it is quite cute. yeah. now time to go through the papers now. and joining us this morning, as they have been all morning, is editor of spite slater and of spite tom slater and journalist playwright emma journalist and playwright emma barnes so let's start with barnes. so tom, let's start with you , shall we, on this? yeah. as you, shall we, on this? yeah. as you, shall we, on this? yeah. as you said, quite a sinister headune you said, quite a sinister headline in the off. i luring in matt sunak luring the public in. tell us a bit more about this. yeah. will it work is the question between january and march, he wants to plan a policy blitz to try and change the mood music, and show that he music, to try and show that he can on issues that can deliver on the issues that matter people, but it matter to people, too. but it seems ambitious. i think, seems quite ambitious. i think, especially immigration, health, education crime is going to education and crime is going to sort out all three sort them all out all three months of next year. but it does make think, you know, really make you think, you know, really soon. not the sort of soon. that is not the sort of person sets policies rising, person who sets policies rising, shall the he has in his shall we say. the he has in his favour, or at least the thing he tries to put forward is i can get things done. i'm a
8:44 am
technocrat i can deliver whatever. and at the same time, we all know that not only given the space of time, he has the short space of time, he has to the around, but to turn the ship around, but also the fact that also because of the fact that he's and his chance he's in him and his chance impose themselves incredibly impose on themselves incredibly tight rules, which, you know, restrict room for restrict their room for manoeuvre. what will this even materialise of that materialise into? none of that is at this point. is really obvious at this point. so i think lowering is so i don't think the lowering is going work. is no. and it going to work. is the no. and it does to be an odd one, you does seem to be an odd one, you know, a policy like some of know, is a policy like some of the things he said he's the things that he said he's going to do. i mean, there was one that he did about clearing the and he the asylum backlog and he basically until basically gave himself until pretty time next year pretty much this time next year to do that in order to do that, because you would have to bring in different in a very messy of different laws, a lot of rules laws, change a lot of rules bnngin laws, change a lot of rules bring in some kind of task force in the all of that to do in the channel all of that to do in the channel all of that to do in to me just didn't seem in a year to me just didn't seem like wonder he's already like i wonder if he's already kind signed his own kind of signed his own resignation a year resignation letter a year from now. yeah. i mean, first of all, whoever is briefing the various papers of rishi sunak papers on behalf of rishi sunak is too fond of the word is far too fond of the word lure. clearly but yeah, i mean ,
8:45 am
lure. clearly but yeah, i mean, he seems to be setting himself up for ever larger falls, i think. yeah he could have just said, i've steadied the ship. let's let's not have change for change just sake. we're now in a more steady position. if i had been advising him , that's what i been advising him, that's what i would have settled on rather than i am going to solve every single crisis under the sun that we clearly going through at we are clearly going through at the going to do the moment. and i'm going to do it the time the next it by the time the next election. it'sjust it by the time the next election. it's just it's voters are fed up with being given unrealistic promises and that excuses that claim and people did have an idea of course, obviously. well, covid that was an expensive ukraine. well, that was very expensive. yeah okay. we appreciate all of that . but i we appreciate all of that. but i think at some point people want to done, though . to see something done, though. yeah. and think it's also the yeah. and i think it's also the pubuc yeah. and i think it's also the public are aware that the reason we went into covid and the energy crisis in a worse position this was because of some of the things that had come before you know lots of cuts to
8:46 am
the public sector meant that when the public sector was really challenged, it wasn't it wasn't enough . i mean, wasn't strong enough. i mean, let's you, shall we? and let's stick you, shall we? and banks closing. that's in the mail . yeah. something like 5000 mail. yeah. something like 5000 branches of banks and building societies have closed over the last, i think seven years, according to which the consumer organisation now we are managing our money differently . i do all our money differently. i do all of mine on an app, our money differently. i do all of mine on an app , in fact in of mine on an app, in fact in the green room just now i had a charge from amazon. i didn't know i'd had. i had a whole conversation with someone to work out how, but there are lots of people who can't do that. and we do still need to have access to those services for those people need to have access to free cash points, not the ones that charge you three or four quid might money that charge you three or four quiiof might money that charge you three or four quiiof the might money that charge you three or four quiiof the banknight money that charge you three or four quiiof the bank andt money that charge you three or four quiiof the bank and that money that charge you three or four quiiof the bank and that isloney that charge you three or four quiiof the bank and that is what out of the bank and that is what is worrying about these closures of bank branches, particularly in very rural areas . if you in very rural areas. if you haven't got access to those services and you're an older person, you're not okay with the
8:47 am
apps. really very, very apps. it's really very, very worrying . yeah, indeed. and so worrying. yeah, indeed. and so sometimes , well, the elderly can sometimes, well, the elderly can be harmed by this kind of stuff. they tend to quite like them too. i'm generalised how they might like about cash their might like about cash in their pockets don't they. as opposed to actually maybe using technology. do technology. is that say to do it. i is this the economy. it. i mean is this the economy. i you take, you take cash i know you take, you take cash in you don't need in wheelbarrows, you don't need to you from cattle. yeah you to use you from cattle. yeah you don't need to go to a bank or anything like that. but potentially could harm the potentially it could harm the elderly. no, definitely. elderly. oh, no, definitely. i mean, you whenever see the mean, you know, whenever see the kind you know, high street kind of, you know, high street bank opening a morning, it's bank opening of a morning, it's always of older always the kind of older customers in that customers who are going in that sort out. you know, even sort things out. you know, even if you're of a certain age, the telephone doesn't work. telephone banking doesn't work. you so you necessarily either. so actually abilities, actually having those abilities, of think, as of course, i think, you know, as the years go on, older generations will get more tech savvy see but there is savvy to see that. but there is a to that. people do need a limit to that. people do need to face face service in many cases, that's never cases, and that's never really going to change. it's to going to change. and it's to it's now. i mean, it's difficult now. i mean, even the two had a cheque last week the two i had a cheque last week that hand to cash and
8:48 am
that i had to hand to cash and getting to a bank. first of all, it about miles away. it was about five miles away. and then the times it's to three. yeah yeah, yeah yeah. annoys yeah. crazy. so annoys me that yeah. crazy. so it's oh money something wasn't even get to even opened and you can't get to it even and it don't it won't even and it maybe don't purpose so yes so more that closing that closing well so closing that closing as well so more pubs a month have more than 32 pubs a month have disappeared rocketing disappeared this amid rocketing energy bills and staffing pressures. so i think the story here is important to remember the pubs have been big hammered for quite a long time anyway. really since the smoking really ever since the smoking ban particular, that ban came in, in particular, that became difficult pubs became very difficult for pubs which serve which which didn't serve food, which often class often meant more working class areas. a lot of pubs, areas. you saw a lot of pubs, wetlands, they said, closing, increasing pressures coming from councils, all kinds of have a kind of perfect storm. and then of course we got lockdown and then of course, we've got the cost of living crisis and energy crisis and so on, really kind of supercharge one of those long term which really term trends which could really to many pubs just to so many pubs just disappearing for good, really because especially a pub because especially once a pub kind disappears it's very, kind of disappears, it's very, very that someone will very unlikely that someone will then later buy that out and turn
8:49 am
into usually for good into one, usually gone for good at turned in at that point turned in something it's something else. so it's something else. so it's something i has crept something that i think has crept up little bit, but in up on us a little bit, but in the next few years will definitely start to feel that and see the 100% coincidence. some of the stop drinking some of the eyes stop drinking now 32 pubs a month. yeah, now 32 pubs a month. but yeah, now 32 pubs a month. but yeah, now dry for nearly two now i've been dry for nearly two years, nearly 18 months now . and years, nearly 18 months now. and i think i may be solely responsible in the service business. what else we got? i mean, we got mark zuckerberg's. yes. and mark zuckerberg has settled a class action suit around the misuse of facebook data for alleged misuse of facebook data by cambridge analytica . this is a big, big analytica. this is a big, big scandal a few years cambridge analytica were harvesting facebook users data through those dreadful quizzes that everyone used to which character in friends are you? which sex in the city women are? yeah. all of these things. which one way you, patrick you know patrick is . patrick you know patrick is. yeah, i was the scouse one.
8:50 am
samantha the bloke in my area just got samantha . for so. just got samantha. for so. anyway but they, i mean , yeah, anyway but they, i mean, yeah, we're joking, but actually lots of people's data was, was harvested and there is strong allegations of misuse of that data . mark zuckerberg and data. mark zuckerberg and facebook have now settled and they've not accepted liability, but they have given quite a lot of money to the people who were suing them, which i think is an important thing to keep remembering things, remembering that these things, our is important, our our data is important, our security is important, and we should have control over what happens with it and more understanding of how. and i think the idea that we all read those service user agreements that 60 pages long, we that 60 billion pages long, we need much more clarity. we do. tom, let's have a look at the royals when talking about this morning . obviously, the king's morning. obviously, the king's speech tomorrow at 3 pm. there's of family drama there's a lot of family drama going behind scenes, going on behind the scenes, though . harry and meghan were though. harry and meghan were also and the son also prince andrew, and the son
8:51 am
says charles kicked him out. yes and we will reach for a tiny violins. but yes, he's losing his office and staff that he did have within buckingham palace , have within buckingham palace, given the fact that he's long stepped down a working royal, why he needs an office and staff will obvious to many will not be obvious to many people, but is still that i think charles in particular. but even there was this even beforehand there was this desire lid on the desire to kind of put lid on the andrew as much as andrew business as much as they possibly after paid the possibly could after he paid the millions of pounds in payouts. a he claims to have never met and since then there's been that kind balance, kind of striking, that balance, it like, of keeping the it seems like, of keeping the family going be at family days is going to be at the lunch tomorrow and the christmas lunch tomorrow and so everyone's got an awkward so on. everyone's got an awkward uncle exactly. no more uncle know exactly. no more awkward sure. awkward than andrew i'm sure. and the time when it and but at the same time when it comes to the official, when it comes to the official, when it comes an office and so comes to having an office and so on, just very more so on, just very ruthlessly more so that what we're that seems to be what we're saying. play. many saying. oh, fair play. many people would say, martha, we've got time. just a quick word on matt and matters that matt hancock and matters that haven't matt haven't done too well. matt hancock stormed the book hancock has stormed the book charts at number 191. not
8:52 am
exactly what his publishers were expecting or hoping for. following is the jungle experience. turns out we'd rather him insects than read his nonsense . he said. insects nonsense. he said. insects insects go . there we go. well, insects go. there we go. well, thank you very much. both of you. another solid paper review, i guess i'm a bit journalist in play. right. and tom slater, editor of spy, thank you . okay. editor of spy, thank you. okay. stay with us because next hour we have lots more. we've got someone christmas trees out, shopping time. show you one now. actually go . all right . okay. actually go. all right. okay. this is nice. so i'm to say real. i think that's real said. extra point in the bag. straight off the bat there. good good structure. i would say i like the up the stairs. it's not balancing thing. what would you call it? decorations. that's what? garland. christmas decoration. and ten. ten. so thank you. i'm glad rama. and also for me, the special screening. oh we've got we've got a special tree from
8:53 am
bethlehem oh oh, oh wow. this is live . i believe this is live. i believe this is bethlehem . a very special tree bethlehem. a very special tree from beza. yes, this is a live shot here of bethlehem off the birthplace of baby jesus , who birthplace of baby jesus, who comes to us tomorrow . i mean, to comes to us tomorrow. i mean, to be fair, everyone else now at home, bless them , has got no home, bless them, has got no chance of dying or it's large just now. so that much? no. so they could have done more with they could have done more with the decorations. i think this is more potential that we had. yeah what do you think? yeah, i don't think think they think i think. i think they could a bit more than they could do a bit more than they thought. they've got a manger and crucially, yeah and crucially, like jesus. yeah actual . so. yeah, well, actual jesus. so. yeah, well, this hardly sounds is there's no elf on the shelf. bethlehem is the head of santa known. they gave a half baked send up in bethlehem. right vaiews@gbnews.uk. come on, get into us. beat bethlehem, people . i want to say i want to see this as well. it's the christmas spirit beat bethlehem . some of spirit beat bethlehem. some of you pushing us to shame on us. so just keep them coming in and i'm going to share as many as we
8:54 am

8:55 am
for boxing day. here's the big picture. low pressure in control. it's wafting in mild air. and with that milder air comes plenty of showers as well. in fact , morning we do have some in fact, morning we do have some snow falling over northern scotland, mostly over hills, but some for time, getting to down lower levels. that should tend to out through the day. to fizzle out through the day. and for most, and actually, for most, it's a dry and a bright christmas eve. there'll be some decent spells of the winds will of sunshine. the winds will strengthen later and certainly this afternoon some showers for wales and northern ireland. that could well on the heavy side could well be on the heavy side . is going to be mild . it is going to be mild temperatures double temperatures reaching double figures south and figures across the south and even further north of scotland. little was little warmer than it was yesterday. still fairly cold, though, far north with though, in the far north with the wet and windy weather here getting blustery everywhere this afternoon getting blustery everywhere this afternoorsome heavy showers evening, some heavy showers moving into wales, across scotland, northern england too, and eventually into the midlands . so a showery and blustery . so it's a showery and blustery start to christmas . it won't be start to christmas. it won't be a cold start to these showers will be of rain. a cold start to these showers will be of rain . so you're not
8:56 am
will be of rain. so you're not going to wake up to anything deep and crisp. and even with these kind of temperatures, 5 to 8 degrees as we start christmas day, it is going to be a day of showers. some bright showers. then with some bright or spells between, or sunny spells in between, it is going fairly windy as is going to be fairly windy as well, which means the showers will move through. quite a lot of across east anglia in of cloud across east anglia in the some more the southeast with some more persistent here for persistent rain perhaps here for time. elsewhere, but not time. showers elsewhere, but not everywhere. seeing the showers, some places northern england, northern actually have northern scotland actually have a largely dry day . it is going a largely dry day. it is going to be mild with temperatures getting double figures getting up to double figures almost the eight almost across the board, eight or course, scotland and or nine, of course, scotland and northern in the northern ireland late in the day northerly wind in, bring northerly wind set in, bring some showers to northwest some snow showers to northwest scotland christmas day night. scotland on christmas day night. that cold arrives for all of that cold air arrives for all of us boxing day when there us on boxing day when there could well be some snow could well be some more snow showers scotland. showers in western scotland. merry christmas join me every sunday at 6 pm. for glory meets in exclusive interviews . i'll be in exclusive interviews. i'll be finding out who are politicians really are and what they really think. it's something that you would never want anyone to

8:59 am
channel wow sets off early. that's a warning of eve travel misery as more walkouts begin on the railways . good morning. it's railways. good morning. it's 9:00 on christmas eve, saturday the 24th of december. this is breakfast on gb news at patrick christys and ellie costello. here are your top stories this
9:00 am
morning. well, as road workers go on strike again , millions go on strike again, millions making their way for home christmas are warned that it could be chaos on britain's roads . there'll be no last roads. there'll be no last minute deliveries either, as royal mail workers strike for a second consecutive day , unions second consecutive day, unions warn they won't be backing down as they fight for a better deal . a royal milestone now . king . a royal milestone now. king charles iii will pay tribute to his late mother in his first christmas message to the nation . and a christmas phone call, prime minister rishi sunak's decided not to do a traditional message, instead calling on servants to thank them for their service as ever, you can join in any of our discussions by emailing gb news gb news dot uk especially today. send in pictures of your christmas trees. hundreds flooding in cape cullen . and we've got the people cullen. and we've got the people talking so much about the trees
9:01 am
, but we are in trouble along with edward, who's tweeted me to say that i love that ellie and patrick are talking about christmas gnomes on gb news, but they're ghosts, apparently . so they're ghosts, apparently. so they're ghosts, apparently. so they're cool goals . we've been they're cool goals. we've been talking about these centre gnome things . talking about these centre gnome things. that's what talking about these centre gnome things . that's what they are. things. that's what they are. they're goals going. oh yeah, it's true. oh gosh. okay. well, they got a special , special they got a special, special thing. well, it's like your little christmas kind of like short stout thing with a beard and a big hat. got them. yes. okay. first of all, they got stan, correct. it is not a beard sensor, as i've been calling him. no, it's a gong and it says the word nordic scandinavian the word nordic and scandinavian mythology . they're a mix of mythology. they're a mix of snow. and i hobgoblin they. well, i stand corrected. thank you very much. thanks interesting stuff, right? every day day. every day day is a school day. every day is school day rise. good is the school day rise. good morning. good morning. our top story today says get serious. people like more travel cars, more travel chaos with some of these driving home for the festive period , being to festive period, being told to brace disruptions further brace for disruptions as further rail strikes kick in from 6 pm.
9:02 am
yes, network rail is advising passengers to travel today only if necessary, which if absolutely necessary, which is difficult if you're trying to see your family for christmas day. and they're also saying that most people should try to complete their journeys by 3 pm. today. going to be pm. today. that's going to be a massive struggle a lot of massive struggle for a lot of people. i say in the latest people. as i say in the latest strikes run up to strikes in the run up to christmas, force as christmas, border force staff as well postal are also well as postal workers are also walking over pay and walking out over pay and conditions. prime conditions. and the prime minister apologised minister has apologised for the christmas travel disruption, but insists that sector pay insists that public sector pay must controlled well, joining must be controlled well, joining us hollis , our east us now is will hollis, our east midlands reporter at nottingham railway station, a i think he's one of my favourite people. well thank you very much especially for belting out little number. yes last hour. i won't make you repeat it. what is going on with you can actually see for you all? i can actually see for the people behind you the first time people behind you . yeah, it is a little bit busier . there . yeah, it is a little bit busier. there are a few . yeah, it is a little bit busier . there are a few people busier. there are a few people that seem to be either figuring out their plans or maybe waiting for some of the few trains that are coming in and out of
9:03 am
nottingham today . nottingham train station today. this is, of course, not to get to the east midlands. so east midlands operate the midlands railway operate the train here as well as. train station here as well as. all lines in and out of all of the lines in and out of nottingham, and derby nottingham, leicester and derby . no trains are operating on east midlands railway today despite the train station being open. it only seems to be a few cross—country trains that are coming in from birmingham and i think one was heading down to bath a little bit earlier based on what one gentleman was telling me. so it is very limited and very subdued and it is very much the same thing that you are going to find in any part of the country . most routes part of the country. most routes and operators are running severely limited services , if severely limited services, if they're running any sort of service at all. of course, this is in the long run in dispute that's been going for on as long as as long as i can as far back as as long as i can as far back as this year goes , all the as this year goes, all the turbulent, different things that we've had in politics, as well as with various different things, is the death of things, which is the death of her majesty the queen. this is
9:04 am
the thing that really sticks and rmt union mick lynch says this is going to carry on. there's no light at the end of the tunnel. if you excuse my cliche . well, if you excuse my cliche. well, the prime minister, rishi sunak, said he saddened, disappointed that it continues at this point, but he thinks that government has fairly and reasonably has acted fairly and reasonably on public pay . pay is one of the on public pay. pay is one of the big things in this dispute. of course, it's around 10% that inflation is currently at. unions would argue that they want something around that for their members . it's also about their members. it's also about things like driverless trains and whether you've got somebody in a kiosk that can direct passengers as well as things like unsociable working hours. the real advice today, because it is going to be incredibly or would usually be incredibly busy at railway stations like this one is to try and make the plans only travel if absolutely necessary or try and get it done as quickly as possible. but of course , even if you get here course, even if you get here nice and early, you train might
9:05 am

well then you've you've won anyway. right. we're moving up. move because it's another strong day for postal workers across the as argue for better the uk as they argue for better pay the uk as they argue for better pay terms conditions. yes, pay plus terms conditions. yes, it's 10th they've walked it's the 10th day they've walked out up to the festive out in the run up to the festive season. which has season. the dispute which has been on since summer, it's been going on since summer, it's caused disruption for businesses and customers to receive letters and customers to receive letters and parcels this month, including, you know, missing parcels . yeah, absolutely, parcels. yeah, i am. absolutely, yes . well, royal mail say there yes. well, royal mail say there will be no standard deliveries. meanwhile no deliveries, many special deliveries , untracked special deliveries, untracked parcels possible today . yes. parcels as possible today. yes. well, national reporter theo well, our national reporter theo chikomba has the story. it's yet another day where those expecting deliveries may have to wait a little longer as members of the communication workers union walk out the second day after rejecting a deal this week. within hours of receiving it, we asked that the company in return was to get round the table proper negotiations not to introduce an agreed change. while those talks were taking place. and to give us these
9:08 am
assurance that they're not going to introduce a new resource model to bring in self employed workers who have to pay for their own veins, their own. i didn't get holiday pay. don't get sick pay . agency workers and get sick pay. agency workers and workers on 20% less terms and conditions bearing the brunt. this business in west london manufactures beauty products for people with sensitive skin . good people with sensitive skin. good morning, guys. how are you getting on today? this time of the year is their peak trading period, christmas time and also the time before black friday. it's probably the most busiest time during the year. so we need to call like extra help from either agency or even from different departments. so we are like a family. so we usually help each other just to like a family. so we usually help each otherjust to make help each other just to make sure that the product is made on time, but also with the higher quality standard. so that's our
9:09 am
aim post. the workers have been offered a 9% pay increase over 18 months. describe by royal mail as the company's and final offer . but what does mail as the company's and final offer. but what does this mean for millions customers across the uk who rely on their service 7 the uk who rely on their service ? it is that time of the year again where many people will be coming in to their local streets to get those last minute presents. but this year, with royal mail strikes, some are experienced in delays, especially if they haven't the opportunity to come and get the person the strikes have caused disruption in the days leading up to christmas for pye skin , as up to christmas for pye skin, as they say, royal mail , the glue they say, royal mail, the glue that connects them to their onune that connects them to their online customers . it's often not online customers. it's often not just people desperate, you know, panic buying gift often for us, because we are a beauty brand, many of our customers will be realising they're going away and thinking , oh realising they're going away and thinking, oh my gosh, i'm going to run out of my skincare. so they're doing a lot of panic replenishment too. so there's a bit yeah, no, it's
9:10 am
bit of that. but yeah, no, it's last week and those last days before , christmas really before, christmas are really busy us while there are no busy for us while there are no further strike days announced yet, no agreement has been reached, meaning we could see further strike days next year . further strike days next year. theo chikomba . gb news. okay, theo chikomba. gb news. okay, let's bring you up to date with other stories that are going on today. the number of people die from the blisteringly cold weather in the us has risen to 13. four people have been confirmed dead and many others injured in a massive car crash caused by extreme ice on the ohio turnpike in erie county, temperatures plunged as low as —45 degrees in some areas . the —45 degrees in some areas. the storm is forecast to develop into being described as a bomb cyclone, bringing with it heavy , blinding snow. cyclone, bringing with it heavy , blinding snow . well, the us , blinding snow. well, the us congress has passed a £37 billion emergency aid bill for ukraine. the record military funding follows president visit to washington on wednesday , his to washington on wednesday, his first foreign trip since start of russia's invasion. the bill was actually only passed hours
9:11 am
before the midnight deadline was hotly contested by conservative republicans were raising concerns about the level us support for ukraine denying us is warning parents about the risks of swallowing toy parts as more and more children are going to hospital over it . the number to hospital over it. the number of children admitted to hospital having consumed a small object has doubled over the last ten years to almost 230 doctors are mainly worried about penny sized batteries , which make up part of batteries, which make up part of several household items like festive lights and tv remotes . festive lights and tv remotes. yeah well, let's just when we've been trying to keep it civilised as christmas is of course around corner, but there are some serious out there and this is very much one of them, a woman and two have been killed and and two men have been killed and several others sadly injured after. a gunman opened as after. a gunman opened fire as a kurdish centre in kurdish community centre in paris. clashed with
9:12 am
paris. protesters clashed with police around weddings police officers around weddings took place. meanwhile, the french president emmanuel macron condemned the incident, describing a heinous describing it as a heinous attack the kurdish community. attack on the kurdish community. well, for more analysis, let's speak paris based speak now to paris based columnist for telegraph anne—elisabeth moutet . good anne—elisabeth moutet. good morning to you . and bring us up morning to you. and bring us up to date then . is not this going to date then. is not this going on in the past 24 hours or so? what do we know about the incident that happened? well, what we really news that there are two readings of it and the government has sort of angled on one, but we're not quite sure yet. the perpetrator doesn't fit your normal terror portrait. he is 69 years old he's a former army co—driver. he lived in a flat alone in the centre . his flat alone in the centre. his own 90 year old father's days that he's crazy . he collected that he's crazy. he collected guns and managed to get some in france where the gun laws are very strict and he came out of one of the time in jail only two
9:13 am
weeks ago, and that was already attacking a camp of migrants . attacking a camp of migrants. all of this points to a racist murder, but at the same time, this kurdish centre is of a focus point for the kurdish community in paris. the kurdish community in paris. the kurdish community was very angry yesterday because they felt that they hadn't been protected even , though, exactly ten years ago, three kurds who were active in the freedom movements were attacked, not far away from the same place . and the result is same place. and the result is that you had unrest in the streets in paris yesterday with kurt saying , streets in paris yesterday with kurt saying, why was streets in paris yesterday with kurt saying , why was the french kurt saying, why was the french police, why we protected kurds have not had a nation ever since the end of the first world war. whether that was redrawn by the great powers to create kurdistan . and there is also the question is that we have seen in other instances turkish attacks deliberately against a kurdish
9:14 am
centre . so that could be it as centre. so that could be it as well . yeah, indeed. and i mean , well. yeah, indeed. and i mean, i was on our yesterday when these proto riots really broke out and have some shocking lines , video footage from both sides of the incident. she's from just behind police lines and then just behind where these protesters were. and it looks incredibly volatile. what is paris like today ? i understand paris like today? i understand that you are in paris now, is that you are in paris now, is that right? what is it like today ? is this city kind of today? is this city kind of coming to terms with what happened or the harassment? now you're paris . oh, there you're outside paris. oh, there you're outside paris. oh, there you go. you don't flat out so what? what was like ? what? well, what was it like? not that i'm sorry that on christmas eve i didn't stay in the right area. but, you know , the right area. but, you know, it wasn't planned. no but seriously, the thing about paris is that it has become in recent in recent recent decades to one or two decades, it's become much more volatile with practically any kind of peaceful . more volatile with practically any kind of peaceful. i'm sorry , that doesn't end like that .
9:15 am
, that doesn't end like that. and the young people who yesterday expressed their anger all same young people who grew up in france and who've seen every other group of unions the yellow vests, etc, express their angen yellow vests, etc, express their anger. and that was also the that they were they were being victimised because you have very few demonstrations in france which . start by saying where is which. start by saying where is the police want more police so that slightly different but no unfortunately it's become very it's become very frequent in paris to have those kinds of rise of the i mean it was not they were not throwing stuff at they were not throwing stuff at the police but they it degenerated because that has been tolerated to often in france for the past 20 years, i should say . a lot of this anger should say. a lot of this anger comes from questions, doesn't it? questions about the man who has been arrested for crime, questions about how he managed to get a gun, about why he
9:16 am
released from prison. i mean, there's a lot of questions . so there's a lot of questions. so what exactly happened here? isn't there's amazing questions can well be asked. i mean, why was he not after having been in jail for attacking a camp , jail for attacking a camp, migrants with assault ? why was migrants with assault? why was he not under under police check? how is it that he managed not to he managed even to practise shooting as a sport, you need a registration and you need a personality check. certainly minute you've got you've been been working with the object of a justice condemnation you should not be allowed to possess guns.so should not be allowed to possess guns. so there are many things that flew under the radar and. the people who saw the shooting, it was a young man who was interviewed by the newspaper but is young. and he said, i saw this guy and he almost looked like a homeless person. and he was carrying this bag. he was slightly stooped i mean, he didn't look like some sort of dangerous person. suddenly dangerous person. and suddenly
9:17 am
he like the he at people just like the centre and he pulled something out of his bag and he started shooting and that's that's something , that is both something, that is both surprising . and yeah look surprising. and yeah look obviously look thank , you very, obviously look thank, you very, very much really appreciate you making time for us. and i do hope you have a good christmas as well . i will, guys, by the as well. i will, guys, by the way, for and thank you very, very much is filling us in from the latest from what was shocking scenes yesterday initially the attack, three dead, two injured critically and the individual himself, a 69 year old man responsible for it believed to responsible for it that it followed of course with kind riots as well see kind of riots as well could see that it calmed down a bit now that it is calmed down a bit now but yes again paris the but yes yes again paris the centre of attention are not for good reason. no no. and a lot of questions as answered that about what that i'm sure what exactly that i'm sure that's come out that's going to all all come out when just got out prison when he just got out of prison apparently. yeah weeks ago. apparently. yeah two weeks ago. yeah of year yeah story this time of year especially now i think we do have time to some pictures have time to share some pictures you of your christmas trees but just send them in all morning

been the appointment tv of the year absolutely fantastic stuff. yeah. what is it. so this group of people were taken to a castle scotland and three of them were told that they were traitors and.the told that they were traitors and. the rest of them could face false and they the traitors had to try. and every night they got to try. and every night they got to murder someone. so and then every night they had to sit around and everyone got together and said , we think you're a and said, we think you're a traitor. you have to leave. and then person revealed whether traitor. you have to leave. and then were yerson revealed whether traitor. you have to leave. and then were or;on revealed whether traitor. you have to leave. and then were or were vealed whether traitor. you have to leave. and then were or were not .ed whether traitor. you have to leave. and then were or were not aj whether traitor. you have to leave. and then were or were not a traitor,|er they were or were not a traitor, and so human and and it was so human and intriguing and people were playing backstabbing and playing a backstabbing and forming making forming alliances, making terrible decisions, and they won lots of money and tasks every day. and that the idea was at the end , they would stop the the end, they would stop the game when they thought they'd got rid of all the traitors. and if that was the case that they had, they would split the money. but if a traitor had remained, they would have of the they would have got all of the money and it so intriguing and the characters and they were extraordinary and story that we
9:41 am
thatis extraordinary and story that we that is that we're talking about on the back of one of the finalists who did win the money was a woman with dwarfism . okay was a woman with dwarfism. okay she was and they were i mean, it was incredible diverse cast really interesting everyone putting something into and watching marrow on a speed boat just zipping around just absolutely having the time of her life . she was fantastic and her life. she was fantastic and she in the story that she wanted , be an advocate for people being with. was she a traitor, though ? she i'm not going to though? she i'm not going to reveal that because ellie hasn't watched it yet. watch it. and if i tell you that, then you'll know whether. oh, hey , now, the know whether. oh, hey, now, the watching audience do know who the traitors are, but if i tell you, that will spoil the ending for you. okay, well, there we go. twitter last night was go. i say twitter last night was was was rife with traitors. traitors. traitors have gone on this is taking country by. yeah, yeah. this is taking country by. yeah, yeah . there will not be many yeah. there will not be many babies named . wilf coming up. babies named. wilf coming up. i'm telling you that much that
9:42 am
oh, what are we going to do tom sizer bird box. yes this speaker so there was a village in nottinghamshire who was getting increasingly frustrated about people breaking the 30 mile an hour limit on the local race side. to take matters, his own hands took a bird box , painted hands took a bird box, painted it to look like a speed camera, and on top of the pole. so it's quite a good idea. absolutely. well this reminds me of a couple of speed related stories. of speed cam related stories. there a lady who sick there was a lady who was sick and people speeding and tired of people speeding down so she to take down her road. so she to take a hairdryer in high light so hairdryer out in high light so people would see on the bright side and it was fantastic. but there was also the elderly chap who was unfortunately told didn't have to long live. he did a bucket list and one of them was to moon speed camera and he got arrested for . oh was to moon speed camera and he got arrested for. oh dear. yeah, i guess was being arrested also on his bucket list though. yes definitely. now i've got time for one more on the news we didn't have to hear anything, but i'm going to i want to make. oh yes we did. we do. and it's
9:43 am
about tony parton. yeah. tell us about. i adore tony parton. she's an absolutely fantastic . she's an absolutely fantastic. and in 2015 apparently she puts an unreleased song in a time capsule and it will not be opened up until she's 99, which is will be 30 years after that. so yeah , can't remember 2034 or so yeah, can't remember 2034 or something like that, but for not for a long time. and she's, you know, she's desperate for people to hear it. this is a great song . she can't wait for us all to hear it. but i just think the idea of still being dolly parton songs in 2035 is a wonderful, wonderful thought . but sentiment wonderful thought. but sentiment for it is. tell me in front of dolly parton. absolutely yes. this and a little like no , i'm this and a little like no, i'm not as acquainted with back catalogue as well. but after that endorsement from emma, i'm and i'll rectify that lyrically incredible and her appearance at glastonbury few years ago was stunning . legends rising over stunning. legends rising over trees is the warbling of elton john. this year , well into next john. this year, well into next year anyway. so again. yeah so i
