12:08 pm
and wales are now minus christian countries less than half the population. 27.5 million people describe themselves as christian, which is 5.5 million fewer than in 2011. there was also a big increase in the proportion of people. they have no religion at all. our yorkshire reporter riley joins us now at selby abbey with a priest who believes that christianity is still here to staying in england . and who to staying in england. and who are you with ? good afternoon. are you with? good afternoon. yes, i'm here with reverend down thomas . don, yes, i'm here with reverend down thomas. don, we yes, i'm here with reverend down thomas . don, we heard yes, i'm here with reverend down thomas. don, we heard in november christianity is in decline . and with people not decline. and with people not saying that they're, christian, less than half the population of england and wales. what do you make of that decline? i don't think many of us in the church were that surprised by the figure. i think it's in line with we've been seeing in with what we've been seeing in our practise anyway . there's our practise anyway. there's obviously been news of people reaching out and exploring their faith over the covid period , but faith over the covid period, but i think really it's a challenge
12:09 pm
for us as a church to think about how we reach people at this time and you'll see a lot more people this time of year than you do normally . more people this time of year than you do normally. midnight mass coming up this evening as well as some of the services. is it that brings people to the church at this time of year? think it's still a part of people's tradition and we're expecting to be quite busy here this evening. we've got the archbishop day, archbishop of york coming day, and that will get and i'm sure that will get people involved . i think there's people involved. i think there's something about this time of year that people still connect it with the church. so we'll see a few more. and it's a privilege to welcome them. and you mentioned covid we're also going through a cost of living crisis , as you know. how can faith support people through this? i think my faith has given a feeling that i'm a part of something a bit bigger. it gives a language for me to explain connection to myself , connection connection to myself, connection to others, and connection nature as well as connection with god .
12:10 pm
as well as connection with god. so i think it's helpful . and so i think it's helpful. and what is the christmas message that you'll be spreading? for me, the christmas message is that god's delight sits in being with us. god wants to be with us so much that he sent that little baby boy jesus into a family, experiencing a challenging economic time and, that that's where god wanted to be . god where god wanted to be. god wants to be with us. it's just a question of how we reach back. thank you . so that's the thank you. so that's the christmas message here from selby abbey . and there'll be a selby abbey. and there'll be a lot of people gathering here this evening for midnight mass for. thank you. and i wonder if you could ask the reverend, how is he planning to counter the covid and the number of people who have dropped off, sadly, since the last couple of and lockdown, etc. church numbers seem to be a few other sort of sizes at this point . is it going sizes at this point. is it going to come about that so calvin's just mentioned, we touched on covid and the real decline in numbers of people coming to
12:11 pm
church because of that. have you got a plan to sort of counter that to get more people in? for me, number bears in the pews are a small measure . what makes the a small measure. what makes the church successful? it's not all about the numbers coming through the door. for me, what is important is how we reach out, how we walk alongside people , how we walk alongside people, where they are, and how we develop those relationships . my develop those relationships. my belief is that if those relationships are meaningful and authentic , then numbers in authentic, then numbers in church will follow. the challenge is for us to reach out and you do lot in the community, don't you? go to coffee shops, you've got food banks. you do a lot to spread the message in the area. yeah, we're part of the warm welcome in the area as well as trying to help with cost of living . and that's not just the living. and that's not just the job. that's a alongside other churches in the area as well as of the public spaces . it's of the public spaces. it's trying to work in partnership think is really important. thank you and i think kelvin's got one

more question via i've i was goodi more question via i've i was good i think i'll join you in your prayers for growth in faith as well as growth in numbers. i think fantastic in think that's fantastic in regards to we this week a regards to we saw this week a woman in the uk been woman in the uk has been arrested for praying silently in woman in the uk has been arrehead.or praying silently in woman in the uk has been arrehead. i'draying silently in woman in the uk has been arrehead. i'd just1g silently in woman in the uk has been arrehead. i'd just like lently in woman in the uk has been arrehead. i'd just like to tly in woman in the uk has been arrehead. i'd just like to give| her head. i'd just like to give you opportunity to say you the opportunity to say something that while you something about that while you on the fact. sir calvin's on the fact. yes, sir calvin's just said i don't know if you heard about it, but there was a woman arrested for praying, silent lee in the street. would you like to make a comment on that. i couldn't possibly comment without knowing exactly what was involved at the time. it's not something i'm aware of and i wouldn't feel comfortable commenting. not a problem at all. thank you, dan. and merry christmas from selby . thank you christmas from selby. thank you both very much . and happy both very much. and happy christmas to you, too . i will christmas to you, too. i will add my $0.02 to that. i think never appropriate to be banned from praying anywhere in the country and we should always celebrate faith no celebrate people's faith no matter is. but like matter what it is. but i'd like to your thoughts. please to hear your thoughts. please email news at. sorry email gb news at. sorry vaiews@gbnews.uk or . tweet us
12:13 pm
vaiews@gbnews.uk or. tweet us at gb news and let us know what you think about what we've been talking about today . the talking about today. the christmas season is typically a tough period military tough period for our military heroes who have returned from their deployment to help fight this. government announced this. the government announced new to help end new measures to help end veterans sleeping rough by 2023. the scheme , called operation the scheme, called operation fortitude enable veterans at risk of homelessness to access supportive housing and wraparound specialist care in health accommodation and education. joining me in the studio is the sas trooper, phil campion . big phil and his dog campion. big phil and his dog and dog meat dog. it's christmas . how are you doing? yeah, thank you for coming along and having a support couple. can you tell us what is the support like for veterans this time of year at christmas? i'm it very much depends on who you are. it really doesn't . how ingrained really doesn't. how ingrained with the system you still are and all that sort of stuff. i know there's a lot of people now, they're probably not receiving the support, the support. no there's no support. there's no there's no real system place. well, i'd
12:14 pm
real system in place. well, i'd like see it change slightly like to see it change slightly when i'd when you leave. i'd like a probationary system in place whereby can dip back whereby you can dip back in, back you for back out as you like for a number of years, because at the moment it seems to me that some people are allowed to. it's not that cares. it'sjust that no one cares. it's just that no one cares. it's just that you don't the first that if you don't make the first move, won't be caught. move, you won't be caught. okay. now, was some sort of now, if there was some sort of system where maybe this all just happen again, just happen every now and again, just to people know that you were to let people know that you were safe secure then. a lot of safe and secure then. a lot of people go unnoticed and. obviously, are obviously, you know, there are homeless there, homeless veterans out there, which really which my heart. it really does. so not people don't so it's not that people don't care, they're falling care, but they're falling through cracks. think with through the cracks. i think with all cracks, i think, all of the cracks, i think, unfortunately, there's a lot other stuff gets prioritised before sometimes, before veterans sometimes, which perhaps shouldn't. perhaps maybe it shouldn't. i'm not more not saying other things are more important, there's nothing important, but there's nothing more man fall more important than a man fall for country. as far as i'm for his country. as far as i'm concerned. do not mean so, you know, thought said know, i thought vinnie said a complete of care when you complete lack of care when you say people dropping through say people are dropping through holes those holes holes in that and those holes shouldn't really shouldn't be there, they really shouldn't. me about shouldn't. can you tell me about the mental health of some of our veterans during christmas? okay look, tough time. it's
12:15 pm
look, it's a tough time. it's a family time, know, when you family time, you know, when you have emotional period have an emotional period of whatever emotion can whatever kind of emotion is, can reignite whatever emotions reignite whatever those emotions were giving those were that are giving you those health makes it health problems. and it makes it very some people. and very hard for some people. and if that being on if you compound that by being on your having other hardships your own, having other hardships to contend with as it to contend with as well, it makes it very difficult. you know, i know, anyone know, and i you know, anyone should somebody should be should have somebody who be able reach who they would be able to reach out you know, and that would out to, you know, and that would do be my aim is do it. that would be my aim is everybody who leaves forces everybody who leaves the forces has continue support and has to continue support and feels they can the feels that they can tap the doon feels that they can tap the door. and he's only one. and i guess that some of them feel that they can't all they're too proud whatever not proud to or whatever do not mean. needs to be mean. but this needs to be instilled the soldiers while instilled in the soldiers while they're this they're still serving. this needs when you leave, we needs to say when you leave, we don't the door. weren't don't shut the door. you weren't just a number. thanks very much for your service. and it's not in many but where they do in many cases, but where they do lose is, where they're just lose them is, where they're just allowed away. so what allowed to drift away. so what do you feel the government do you feel about the government pulling military try pulling the military to help try the good thing. the strikes? is a good thing. you up, you the you signed up, you saw on the dotted line. i've covered other people's my time people's work during my time in the you if i went
12:16 pm
the military. you know if i went down visit the troops last down to visit the troops last week, i met some good top men and, women supporting, you know, the and actually the ambulance. and actually that's exemplary . you that's who was exemplary. you know, even to learn know, we might even get to learn something know? something here, you know? i mean, looking mean, sadly, we're looking forward something forward to doing something new. you challenge. and you know, another challenge. and i one of the not so i would take one of the not so i'm single, i'll be in the block, i'll be drinking. i'm i'm out and i'm something gin. out here and i'm something gin. i there are i mean so you know there are actually will never change you know they know that you know by signing the dotted you signing on the dotted line you know might some point know that you might some point as something slightly what as a do something slightly what you by you know so you signed up for by you know so part i think the part and parcel when i think the attitude extremely good of the soldiers and service people i saw the valley barracks saw down at the valley barracks week a lot of our followers and a of our viewers have been a lot of our viewers have been saying on twitter on social media that it seems that veterans are being outed in favour who favour of illegal immigrants who are supported and are being housed, supported and paid for by money. that the paid for by money. is that the case ? does it feel like there's case? does it feel like there's an imbalance? i'm sure. if an imbalance? i'm sure. look if you the homeless squad you were the homeless squad here, the homeless squad, here, if the homeless squad, you're someone who sees a homeless then homeless squatting and then you see someone who perhaps in your
12:17 pm
view not fit the criteria view does not fit the criteria certainly the certainly doesn't fit the criteria front that criteria in front of that person. then going to say person. then you're going to say something. you're going to feel a off because you know that. a bit off because you know that. the is, i don't believe the fact is, i don't believe service person should be left in the cold. any service person should about the medical should be left about the medical care they need. know, care that they need. you know, if got mental health, if they have got mental health, they come to front of they should come to the front of they should come to the front of the some people the queue every some people might that do to might argue that they do come to the of the queue, but i'd the front of the queue, but i'd say, look, we need to grab these ones. we don't need to let them drift. we need them where identify into fold identify grab them into the fold have they can go have somewhere where they can go at have have an at the military, have a have an arm a branch is open that's arm or a branch is open that's like probationary one that like a probationary one that says, for the of says, you know for the rest of the time on this you've got somewhere to go. do not mean because it is a family to us people military consider people in military to consider it family know some people it a family you know some people that's that that's the only family that go i don't think say thank you don't think we say thank you enough. very enough. i know it's very american, to use american, but i'd like to use this opportunity just to thank our servicemen for being well. well, really our servicemen for being well. welldo really our servicemen for being well. welldo that. really our servicemen for being well. welldo that. honestly, really will do that. honestly, i thanking the troops everywhere i go. and go. you know also thanks and i don't it you know don't ask for it you know but

12:22 pm

12:23 pm
he got picked and some people think he was a bit although he's done well before, he hasn't played so what's played much football. so what's he cup now? he doing in the world cup now? he substitute he played two substitute appearances for england, wales and last couple and senegal in the last couple of and yet he comes back to training the week or training in the last week or last or so. last week, last few days or so. last week, i imagine. pep guardiola, his manager, manchester yesterday i imagine. pep guardiola, his manélook, iianchester yesterday i imagine. pep guardiola, his manélook, he chester yesterday i imagine. pep guardiola, his manélook, he chesasked;terday i imagine. pep guardiola, his manélook, he ches asked whyay i imagine. pep guardiola, his manélook, he ches asked why if said, look, he was asked why if he's be available and said, look, he was asked why if he'said be available and said, look, he was asked why if he'said alwayse available and said, look, he was asked why if he'said always notfailable and said, look, he was asked why if he'said always not fit.|ble and said, look, he was asked why if he'said always not fit. and and said, look, he was asked why if he'said always not fit. and they he said always not fit. and they said, with him? said, oh, what's wrong with him? because i thought it might be a recurrence of a shoulder injury, but not fit. in but no, he's not fit. as in he's overweight not in overweight he's come back not in shape now, shape to play football. now, when fat, have to put when you say fat, we have to put it in context here. fat for a footballer might mean a pound or two i'm sure he can footballer might mean a pound or two we i'm sure he can footballer might mean a pound or two we get i'm sure he can footballer might mean a pound or two we get rid i'm sure he can footballer might mean a pound or two we get rid ithatjre he can footballer might mean a pound or two we get rid ithat overa can footballer might mean a pound or two we get rid ithat over a:an but we get rid of that over a penod but we get rid of that over a period of the problem period of time the problem manchester hiatus manchester city with this hiatus the season the middle of the season everyone's stockpile of everyone's got to stockpile of fixtures of fixtures fixtures a backlog of fixtures after now resuming on boxing and the i've eight the city. i think i've got eight games over weeks that's games in just over weeks that's a in football terms and it a lot in football terms and it really is. it's a of really is. it's a lot of minutes. going to minutes. are they going to need people callum robinson? people like callum robinson? he's back. he's going to be coming back. robinson not playing robinson i'm not i'm not playing football. high up from football. how high up from kalvin phillips ? so yeah. so kalvin phillips? so yeah. so

again, they need him badly in him as part of this squad and but what you saw there, sean, he wasn't around, thought wasn't just sat around, thought that was training that was what he was training and well, that was that was as well. that was question they well. that was a question they seemed guardiola seemed to people. guardiola seems explain seems to be at a loss to explain why he'd come back in why exactly he'd come back in in bad dont why exactly he'd come back in in bad don't know how bad shape. so we don't know how much over. we that much he was over. we that there's evidence there's no evidence he was breaking scales anything breaking the scales or anything like nonetheless it's like that. but nonetheless it's it much for the it doesn't say much for the regime that they were running with heat over there as with all that heat over there as well. imagine, is quite well. you imagine, is quite difficult to on like the difficult to put on the like the studio. exactly. i know studio. yeah, exactly. i know they to right. they never seem to get it right. i in the morning i think in the in the morning it's cold. it gets it's very cold. it gets progressively hot. but if you your right now so your turkey in here right now so it's i just wonder though was was it necessary for his manager to shame him like that? you know , not maybe he's just , i'm not sure. maybe he's just giving nudge. him giving a friendly nudge. get him to shape. yeah to get back into shape. yeah probably. probably put a fat probably. i probably put a fat shaming to me about shaming note to tell me about your christmas . are you doing. your christmas. are you doing. i i'm so. i'm working tomorrow morning. i'm to i'm going to catch a midnight tonight. i was watching a segment earlier on. i find the midnight mass is

12:27 pm
the world cup is a hiatus in the middle. we've got the cups, i think it's around a quarter finals. i think before before finals. i think is before before christmas and it resumes in the 27th. the issue here, the 27th. now the issue is here, the number of competitors in the field was increased in 2019 so about 90 it's now increased 148. that's a big it just dilutes the why is that at the lower end well i think there are a few reasons for it i think i mean for example they want they want to include the ones including ukrainian for sake of course ukrainian for the sake of course they do a ukrainian he wasn't up to and said won't be to scratch and said he won't be in but he was wiped out. in future, but he was wiped out. you're of whitewash you're seeing a lot of whitewash games early rounds, games in the early rounds, which dilutes people dilutes the quality people paying dilutes the quality people paying that paying good money to see that not their not just through their subscriptions satellite not just through their subscrijalso; satellite not just through their subscrijalso through satellite not just through their subscrijalso through toningite not just through their subscrijalso through toning up tv, but also through toning up the eyes on the palace and paying the eyes on the palace and paying for tickets, etc. so it's a bigger tournament. it the quality slightly. i still it'll be good quality after christmas because the good players will still get through to the to the latter rounds proper christmas sports what it i mean. well sports is what it i mean. well you know some people say it's not sport would argue it not a sport would argue that it is that can you is a shame then that can you know. that so peter
12:28 pm

robinson standing in for alister stuart in her latest glorious meets episode , all gb news meets episode, all gb news presenter gloria de piero has gone to a community store where people go to top up their food shops as they deal with impact of the cost of living crisis . of the cost of living crisis. this is the evelyn community store in south london fo r £3.50 store in south london for £3.50 a week. local people can sign up and that entitles them to get extra to feed their families the essentials really but uses a place like this will of the four people are about to eat are in work. the other two have worked pretty much their lives and until pretty recently but are currently too sick to be in the workplace . do you know what ? let workplace. do you know what? let them tell their own stories . go them tell their own stories. go inside . we're roughly about inside. we're roughly about about same age . places like this
12:40 pm
about same age. places like this didn't exist when women were most. yeah what would ? just chip most. yeah what would? just chip in as you feel. what your life like . if you weren't a member of like. if you weren't a member of this club where you pay like. if you weren't a member of this club where you pa y £3.50 this club where you pay £3.50 a week to top up your shopping, it would be a lot harder . it would would be a lot harder. it would be a lot harder, no doubt about it. i mean, that would be many things in your fridge, freezer and fridge and cupboard that you couldn't have. i mean, things are that. i mean, not are not that. i mean, it's not so on middlemore because so tough on middlemore because i don't children. to don't have children. i want to go homeless . now, don't have children. i want to go homeless. now, i'm go look at homeless. now, i'm not homeless. but, you know what? that was a year what? yeah, but that was a year i got it. so that's actually relevant now. that doesn't matter anymore. does matter relevant now. that doesn't m'all? anymore. does matter relevant now. that doesn't m'all? whatore. does matter relevant now. that doesn't m'all? what matterss matter relevant now. that doesn't m'all? what matters now? atter relevant now. that doesn't m'all? what matters now? the' at all? what matters now? the future i'm homeless now. future. so i'm not homeless now. i have children , so i don't have children, so my life's so bad . so i've got life's not so bad. so i've got no complaints . it's how. tell me no complaints. it's how. tell me how, how would you say both you and your husband are working full time? got five full time? you've got five children. how you them all children. how would you them all afford ? feed them all. you're
12:41 pm
afford? feed them all. you're trying to better yourself as well. you're trying to get a new qualification to be an accountant. that accountant. i would say that life be impossible because life would be impossible because i mean, prior to this sort of beenin i mean, prior to this sort of been in debt and having to pay back like times where, i had child tax credit always having to pay back the child tax credit. i mean, i'm still paying back child tax credit because i had a child in nursery at some point and my husband was offered for three years. he lost his job. and during that time there was so much i, i must say that there were times at the beginning with my family , i was beginning with my family, i was grateful actually . so it's a grateful actually. so it's a bye, baby food with the credit card . so those times where when card. so those times where when you think that being grateful to have a credit card but to buy
12:42 pm
food is not like going to buy something luxurious and nice boot pair of do you but just to buy food and i was grateful for that yeah right i'm telling you i can't tell you i cannot put a value to what it has done because not only at least it has reduced my food bill a lot . and reduced my food bill a lot. and then we, we get exposed to things that i personally wouldn't have gone to the shop to buy because i would not i cannot afford it. i would not go to a shop in waitrose we have things waitrose sometimes we have things from marks and spencer nicer, you know, which i would not gone to buy because i know cannot afford that. what was what would it be like if you didn't have the supply of foods you get from here? i'd probably be on baked beans on every day because , you know, luckily i because, you know, luckily i like bake and runs more than
12:43 pm
others. yeah. i mean but not every. no, no , no. yeah, yeah, every. no, no, no. yeah, yeah, yeah, right. yeah yeah, yeah. it would be tough without the for you.so would be tough without the for you. so even work part time. yeah it helps top up my shopping as well because i'm find that i'm spending less in tesco's now than i was spending before because things are so expensive. yeah things . because things are so expensive. yeah things. the community star is a godsend. i've done well done with that . then for the done with that. then for the last four or five and i've used my life. it's done a lot for next year we get to the fruit and vegetables that we probably couldn't afford. so you know, the cost of food going to the supermarket, putting the heating on. yeah. how much do you worry about the heating on? do you have you have to. have to have to? you have to. we have to do i haven't put it on do it. oh, i haven't put it on so far. yeah. yeah just so far. yeah. yeah no she's just been haven't put it on been putting haven't put it on i mean since winter came. well i haven't and my central heating on and then obviously when i wanted to turn on the discovery wasn't working is very poor it
12:44 pm
wasn't working is very poor it was really sad. but i still haven't turned on. but luckily i haven't turned on. but luckily i have this one oil fields projector. so that's i have in my sitting room so i'm warming my sitting room so i'm warming my sitting room so i'm warming my sitting room. i since it's got cold i really want my sitting room but then i'll have issue where i have mould . so issue where i have mould. so it's just going to get this winter because i'm not to heat the house. do you own your house? no, i'm in the council policy. so they do when summer comes, the winter comes the mould comes back again and so even with the heating , the mould even with the heating, the mould was there . so it's without was there. so it's without heating , it's just going to get heating, it's just going to get very bad . and she went in and very bad. and she went in and that's not right. so you you two have always voted otherwise for you two, basically not always . you two, basically not always. not just for good. most of the time, i figure if you fall, somebody was fighting for you and if it would make a
12:45 pm
difference to your life, you would vote. yeah yeah, of would vote. yeah yeah, yeah. of course, people just financialized. they feel disillusioned . it's disillusioned. it's understandable people just understandable that people just like, what's the point? we'll put up? he's not going to make do . and what is the point? they do. and what is the point? they what is the point? you know, i mean. i could swear now, but i'm not going see but you know, i've had conversations with a couple of friends and i say they can't organise, organise the government call, organise a, an a brewery, you know they , they a brewery, you know they, they can't win be better off people like us we'd be better off . like us we'd be better off. yeah. people, you know, like you with your life experience. yeah exactly . to have a voice in exactly. to have a voice in decision some else, you know what decisions are made to help people who are struggling . so people who are struggling. so many people struggling with the cost of living. just want to cost of living. i just want to hopefully be here to watch my son grow up and live because he wants you in in a couple of years. does that make you feel that son's going pride that your son's going to pride for crowds hemispherical ? for crowds of hemispherical? because, pretty proud because, well, i'm pretty proud
12:46 pm
of because got no of him. so because he's got no dad, i just want to hope that here to see him do that one thing i want to do that's really lovely. thank you thank but thank you so much . that was thank you so much. that was fascinating . thank you, gloria. fascinating. thank you, gloria. i think it's always important to have more normal people having normal views. and that's exactly what gb is now in a time what gb news is now in a time everyone and everything is racist , christmas is no racist, christmas is no exception . apparently some take exception. apparently some take offence at the idea of a white christmas to not worry. there are now ranges of ethnically christmas ornaments for people who want their trimmings to reflect them and although used as an to the festivities, they can help to open up difficult conversations on race and colour to some light on this topic, i'm joined by the social policy analyst and cultural writer, dr.
12:47 pm
rakhi islam rakhi. but where are you really from ? one more really you really from? one more really from? well, calvin, i was born insulin family homes in a numbers the openness in north indian origin is not very difficult is it not need to be offended by that question thank you very much. i know you'll be straight with what do you straight with that. what do you think about multiculturalism? do you needs reining in to you think needs reining in to build social cohesion ? the good build social cohesion? the good of from ethnic and of brits from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds ? well, call cultural backgrounds? well, call when you ask a great i think it's been a difficult year most of multiculturalism we saw of the multiculturalism we saw the last two disorders primarily young muslim and hindu men in the city which is traditionally been heralded as a paragon of multicultural and interfaith relations . we've also seen the relations. we've also seen the publication of reports on group based sexual abuse where. public institutions prioritise racial sensitivities over the bread and
12:48 pm
butter of protecting the most vulnerable. so i think that what we need to do we need to do with state sponsored multiculturalism in britain . we need to focus in britain. we need to focus more on shared values, mutual obugafion more on shared values, mutual obligation and sense of common purpose because too all often what i people prioritising is differ between a various groups in the uk as opposed to what we have in common absolute. and what i often see is people taking offence on behalf of other people. we see in the brighton university saying have a happy winter closure period instead of saying happy christmas because they're afraid of people that aren't christian. now you're not christian now i know you're not christian yourself and i see you a yourself and i see you in a christmas jumper, so taking christmas jumper, so i'm taking it. that you're it. on good faith that you're not word not offended by the word christmas. just shed some christmas. can we just shed some light that people light on this that people from other faiths other religions don't be offended by people don't tend be offended by people to have a faith or religion. well bit of we have a diversity of faiths. in my home town of
12:49 pm
luton, i've never come across anyone. luton, i've never come across anyone . i haven't come across a anyone. i haven't come across a single non—christian who's by the greeting merry christmas . i the greeting merry christmas. i think much of this is complete . think much of this is complete. the imaginary and i think all too often you have i you say modern wing activists many of them suffering from a white saviour complex who think that ethnic and religious minorities in the uk to be constantly mollycoddled they fabricating their fabricating . and i think their fabricating. and i think what they're doing instead of cultivating social cohesion they're actually creating tensions between communities through activist endeavours . i'm through activist endeavours. i'm with you entirely mollycoddling that you speak of. it's actually a form of condescending, isn't it? because it's saying very . it? because it's saying very. yeah, it's seeing people and treating them differently based on their ethnicity. we saw the sussexes release a christmas card that said what was that joyous holiday season again , joyous holiday season again, every time i speak about this,
12:50 pm
people say, you're making it up. calvert no one's trying to cancel but people are cancel christmas, but people are literally word literally taking the word christmas do christmas out of christmas. do you there's something you think there's something deeper just deeper this, or is it just people being people like being culture warriors stirring up that warriors and stirring up that don't exist ? well, i think that don't exist? well, i think that what we've seen in recent and this through the latest this came through the latest census data, calvin, is that there has a decline in christian identification in england and wales back in 2001 over seven in ten people living in england and wales identified as christian for the first time in the census. that's dropped under half of belief to 46.2% is the latest figures from the 2020 21 census. i do so there are there are certain groups in, society, political groups groups . there's political groups groups. there's one thing promoting secularism . one thing promoting secularism. but what i'm quite worried about is that this is growing comfort
12:51 pm
when . it comes to anti—christian when. it comes to anti—christian sentiment. i think some of these groups that i referred to they're very protective when it comes to minority faiths living in england expressing the religious identity celebrating their festive tis but that that sort of freedom that sense of self creation isn't necessarily afforded to traditional christians . and i think that's christians. and i think that's a crying shame and that's a change. yeah, i agree. and i think obviously i hope you don't mind me saying that you are a muslim and i think you've been used as a scapegoat i think many people, these you call people, many of these you call that call them? i call that what you call them? i call the metropolitan liberals. but the metropolitan liberals. but the as the secularists will use you as an to , rid us of people an excuse to, rid us of people like say , don't want to be like me to say, don't want to be talking we want to talking about christ. we want to be talking about christmas because offend the because it might offend the muslim i think muslim minorities. and i think honestly, that's a shame and it's disgrace. it's a disgrace. and it's politicisation of all. politicisation of both of all. but i want to ask you specifically about the case that's about a lot that's been talked about a lot this week in that there has been
12:52 pm
a wonderful called a lady, a wonderful lady called isabel arrested for isabel who is being arrested for praying , her head praying silently, her head within the bounds of a speech area . now, should it ever area. now, should it ever against the law to pray in your own head ? i'm amazed by that own head? i'm amazed by that story, if truth be in some ways in some people who won't be surprised because as . i there's surprised because as. i there's one thing it was promoting community through say sexual organisations but what we're seeing there that's just a fundamental lack of tolerance and also that that wall into growing perceptions that forms of religious expression quiet moments prayer in public religious minorities those freedoms and think that's actually a good thing but members of christian communities are not necessarily afforded
12:53 pm

understand you are going be understand you are going to be back on in just under an hour in the gb news christmas special. so to greater depth in so we'll go to greater depth in that for what did you that show. but for what did you make the pm's christmas make of the pm's christmas message ? hello, calvin. happy message? hello, calvin. happy christmas . message? hello, calvin. happy christmas. thank you very much for having me on. it's great to do this together. well, i guess i was annoyed and embarrassed by, know, go out of our by, you know, we go out of our way muslims eid way to wish muslims happy eid and the hindus happy diwali it's the birthday of jesus is too much to ask that since half the country is christian , we might country is christian, we might respect jesus in kind of way he's. but he's the most extreme ordinary figure in the whole of human history. it's utterly captivating. on people has captivating. his on people has done the most wonderful good. why would you ignore him? it why why would you ignore him? it just seems rude to me and a bit narrow minded . yeah. it was an narrow minded. yeah. it was an embarrassed christmas message, wasn't it? have you noticed a greater shift away from the word christmas university christmas with university celebrities and, politicians choosing instead to say happy holidays ? that's right . we holidays? that's right. we should really cool people out on
1:10 pm
it if they're going to claim to be diverse and imagine that everything should be treated equally . everything should be treated equally. there's no harm that we can celebrate that . but it's can celebrate that. but it's equality for everybody except christians . it's respect for all christians. it's respect for all religious figures . jesus it's religious figures. jesus it's a favouring of institutions, but not the we should really tell people that the hypocrisy is unwelcome and it's unnecessary. there's so much to celebrate in christianity . it's the most christianity. it's the most wonderful faith and the most extraordinary experience . and it extraordinary experience. and it revolutionises society . why this revolutionises society. why this constant diminishment ? i think constant diminishment? i think it's because people are afraid of it . why indeed is this an of it. why indeed is this an american ization or is there something deeper behind it? i might suggest personally that they say the word christ, they can't say the word christ, that's they're avoiding that's why they're avoiding saying christmas . i'm one of my saying christmas. i'm one of my rules of thumb is one asks practical questions . first of practical questions. first of all of them theological questions afterwards. i think practically one of the things it
1:11 pm
does is, is people are anxious about constrained in their personal preferences section . me personal preferences section. me particularly and the fact is christianity has a very strong , christianity has a very strong, powerful sexual ethic which is extremely good for society . when extremely good for society. when you get rid of it all, the evidence is society becomes more decadent. but the other thing is that we live in a spiritual battle and all that means think is that one can see the good and evil fighting against each other and, particularly in the human heart . and i think what it means heart. and i think what it means is that people are afraid of the good and there's sense that that somehow to mention jesus is only ever mentioned as a swear word. why is that why do you never heard people people using other religious figures names a swear word? why is it only i strongly suspect that this is part of the toxic ification of the soul and the people are being got out by evil and they simply don't know it. but they should listen to themselves and ask whether or not something's gone wrong that they only treat the name of
1:12 pm
they can only treat the name of god, compassionate , the god, the compassionate, the kind, the forgiving, the loving, with, with surrounded by f—word and cursing . there's something and cursing. there's something spiritually wrong as well as as well as intellectually . so let's well as intellectually. so let's talk about the good. let's talk about the true meaning of christmas. can you summarise it for ? yes, i think i can i'm for us? yes, i think i can i'm being alive . a very strange being alive. a very strange business. what have doing here? where do we come from? where we going to is? so the first question is, is there intelligence behind the universe and what what tells us is, yes, there is the meaning in the universe instead of meaninglessness and chaos. universe instead of meaninglessness and chaos . yes, meaninglessness and chaos. yes, christmas says this meaning is the meaning. well, dispose it towards us or not. it could be like the like the norseman and vikings wagon where thor was really quite brutal. god says yes . the intelligent meaning is yes. the intelligent meaning is immensely well disposed towards us and, has come to find us, to love us , forgive us, and to love us, forgive us, and to remake us. for people struggling with sense of low self esteem
1:13 pm
and wondering what they're doing in life , and particularly how in life, and particularly how they can overcome some ethical and psychological issues like like forgiveness and hope christmas has all the answers. jesus literally has all the answers human heart needs. but the problem is that people don't hear about it. they don't hear what he teaches . they they hear what he teaches. they they hear him only as a swear word. they don't read the gospels and the church been so bad and ashamed at telling people about who jesus is and how an experience of relationship with him can turn one's whole life . having turn one's whole life. having turned one's life around concerns society's life around. we can see this all the way through history. you're right. you're right. absolutely. but shouldn't get a victimhood complex this because we complex about this because we know that the christian faith thrives and thrives under persecution and now that we are a minority faith in this country intolerance in this country and intolerance towards christianity is growing. surely means that the surely that means that the country be returning to its country will be returning to its christian roots, it not? christian roots, will it not? well, the astonishing thing about the faith is that it's exploding all over the world. it's exploding in asia , in
1:14 pm
it's exploding in asia, in china, in enormous numbers of christians in china and in africa . the only place it's africa. the only place it's having a hard time because it's being discriminated is europe and america . but the and america. but the extraordinary thing about christianity is it meets the needs of the human soul. and in fact the christians are persecuted. the more the presence of christ, who is absolutely lovely in terms of forgiving enemies and turning the other and always overcoming hopelessness with , hope becomes hopelessness with, hope becomes evident. so fact that we're under the cosh a little bit of the people are closing the sort of doors of opportunity to us and society simply means there's and society simply means there's a greater opportunity to talk about jesus, to honour him, to love him, serve him, and to love him, to serve him, and to reach people who live in reach out people who live in some kind of fog of darkness still, which involves not exactly self—hate, but but self—recrimination , the longing self—recrimination, the longing to be set free. and it's our job to be set free. and it's ourjob to be set free. and it's ourjob to tell them they can be set free. absolutely. and from our heavenly to our earthly king,
1:15 pm
what values should king charles iiitake what values should king charles ill take on from his late mother 7 ill take on from his late mother ? well, i'm delighted that he wants to be caring for all that's a hospitable and broad minded and generous attitude . minded and generous attitude. but the faiths don't have the same values. and so ultimately we have to choose which one is better. his mother , a very vivid better. his mother, a very vivid experience of jesus, which marked her whole life and was was partly why she was such a vivacious and cheerful person, could so many people to her, so what, giles? i'd recommend very strongly is that he learn about his mother's with jesus, about her prayer , about the way she her prayer, about the way she put him first and the way in which she was not ashamed to be his disciple. even though she was a queen, he he could he could very well from learning from something of his mother's genuine , authentic and life, genuine, authentic and life, giving faith absolutely that has been. dr. gavin ashenden, thank you so much for your time today. ihope you so much for your time today. i hope we didn't keep you

least what we saw all. well, we need to find another solution. it's probably going to be an oven it's probably going to be an over. we know exactly that. we will see what we can and it is what it is. but i understand the situation. it definitely makes sense. it could have been planned out a bit better. so we don't get in this situation to arrive here not ask ourselves what would we do ? yes. and that what would we do? yes. and that group of said to me that they expect uber to manchester was going to cost them around 150 to £200 today. lots of people of course of have already make up made all the travel arrangements whether that means the getting out wherever they're from as early as possible earlier in the week or they've taken to the roads today, 17 million cars are expected to be on the roads, according to the aa. so that's expected to be quite congested depending on when you're travelling . midday is supposed travelling. midday is supposed to be the busiest time of day for travelling the roads according to the aa for

christmas eve. the other big one is of course coach services us national express here in nottingham. i've just been in there for a few moments and it looks like it's really busy. lots of people who have clearly come to the train station have then gone the local coach then gone to the local coach station to get from station to try get a coach from there instead . rail operators, there instead. rail operators, coach operators have said that they are putting on extra services and have putting services and have been putting on services for christmas on extra services for christmas eve. this strike is to continue. it doesn't seem that there's dispute negotiations that are going to be coming up that are going to be coming up that are going to be coming up that are going to fix this right now. and so as we do go into the new year when got strikes, we've when we've got strikes, we've got force strikes well got border force strikes as well as everything going as everything else that's going in the background with the and postal it seems that postal workers it seems that strikes as have been a big part of 2022 are going to continue way into 2023 . with us there in way into 2023. with us there in my county of nottingham, thank you very much for that. now let's have a look at what you

calvin robinson covering alistair stuart. have you ever wanted to make a change? have you ever wanted to help your community? your mp can help , community? your mp can help, apparently. gloria de piero speaks to richard graham. mp and his two constituents are rosie and about how are working together to change the law on spiking . so today we're going to spiking. so today we're going to find out 21 year olds may see what works with her. for gloucester, richard graham to change something which discovered by by something which happened to say almost a year ago to the day of introduction . ago to the day of introduction. rosie as well so just tell us what happened to you almost a year ago the day. so i was out with a group of friends at university last night and was just a normal night out . the just a normal night out. the girls and i've got needle spiked basically in my arm and yeah .
1:40 pm
basically in my arm and yeah. and in a club. yes so we were out in start two separate clubs that belong to same people. so you go to the first one, then you go to the first one, then you travel to the second one and we always pregent to save money stuff didn't have any out got to about 12 i think suddenly start to feel sick was sick in the club went outside to get fresh air and so i've collapsed a bit on the table . so it just be on the table. so it just be a feeling way too carried on. it was literally going all night to like four in the morning. and then, yeah, i woke up the next morning and found it on my arm. what did you find on your arm so it was like a circular bruise, like a pinprick in the middle and was the only thing on my arm that whenever no ever marks or bruises anything , it was by bruises or anything, it was by the here. so and then the back here. so and then simply tell your mum . yeah, i simply tell your mum. yeah, i rang and rang me and said rang my mum and rang me and said what do you think this is. and i said it looks like needle said it looks like a needle mark. maisie was
1:41 pm
mark. and then maisie was almost, i think she was still in the throes of whatever had been put into her because she was quite relaxed about it at that point i would say, and then got more and more upset. i then went there trying to find out what to do and what stone and then so point you go through is terrible awful experience and was loads of chat about this in the news about the time that you got spikes particularly. yeah that's a universal student sort of really raising this issue. so at what point do you go and say your mp richard graham ? well, i your mp richard graham? well, i actually emailed richard to say what happened and just to say , what happened and just to say, what happened and just to say, what can we do? and i think my view on it and i think maisie would agree , was there was no would agree, was there was no help that point. and then it was looking at the next thing and the next thing. so, richard , me the next thing. so, richard, me from your of view, what happened? how did you when you saw this email, did you invite
1:42 pm
rosie and maxine. i think it helped . i already knew rosie helped. i already knew rosie from the work been doing, raising funds for the homeless and so on. but in essence, as know so well, when an mp gets email of help from constituent, there are various different things you can do in this case through the story which you outlined very articulately at, some length it seemed to me that this was something i didn't know much about spiking . yeah, my much about spiking. yeah, my children are a bit older. much about spiking. yeah, my children are a bit older . they children are a bit older. they didn't really get the spiking problem, so i started doing some research on this and the more i looked into it, the more i came to the conclusion that there was a gap, law and that what we a gap, the law and that what we needed to do actually, apart from the constituency business to help maisie and to trying to help maisie and rosie was do something that was wider and important, was that when were thinking about how you might the law, how important was was maisie's personal experience to helping you to formulate a plan? it was absolutely because
1:43 pm
without her anecdotal evidence plus the photograph that showed this was for real because there's been doubt in some government political circles as to whether the spiking by a needle has actually happened. there's very proven evidence of somebody being poisoned by a needle, and it's partly to do with the length of time between the act and then you like the body being analysed and so on. and so this was crucial me because it was the proof . i know because it was the proof. i know that reggie doesn't make things up, so that enable me to talk. people like the former lord chancellor buckland about, what these two existing laws were all about and how we could something that would make the offence spiking much wider and therefore inhibit people doing what had happened to maisie at university what stage are you at in changing the law that was
1:44 pm
inspired by meeting your constituent ? maisie we made constituent? maisie we made pretty good progress . the then pretty good progress. the then home minister , rachel mcclain, home minister, rachel mcclain, came up to gloucester . home minister, rachel mcclain, came up to gloucester. i home minister, rachel mcclain, came up to gloucester . i saw came up to gloucester. i saw both rosie and maisie together feels quite about striking herself and was helped by another colleague who in fact had been spiked earlier her life too. and were working on getting a change. the law, which they hoped would come through in the new year since we've had the change of government and ministers with the new minister in the home office, sarah dines . i spoke to her last night. she's talking with suella braverman this week home secretary and i'm hoping that they will confirm whether the best way to tweak the existing and widen the scope or whether it needs something new and separate, which would take longer . so i separate, which would take longer. so i think probably a bit of secondary legislation in the jargon could do the job and it could be done relatively fast if there's the will to do it. and, you know, i'm not going to
1:45 pm
let go of this. and what does that how impulse is it that to you how impulse is it got from a terrible happened to you you contacted a member of parliament and they trying the law would you recommend other people go and see their mp if something bad has happened and there's a loophole the law. yeah i think the that at the i know i think the that at the minute not many people like people are just it and they don't realise the consequence is it not commonplace you're saying i'm speaking a place officer i'm speaking to a place officer and she was saying by of it it's more like a joke. i mean finding it funny , it's not like i don't it funny, it's not like i don't think many are going out with the intent to do secondary offences against these people. i get there in big groups of people probably and they're finding funny to do it to finding it funny to do it to other people . it's needles and other people. it's needles and other people. it's needles and other drinks. i think. i think with both the police are finding it we're both as so i think it that we're both as so i think the fact that will actually be that law very clear is a legal to do it and it'll be easier to convict then i think it's going
1:46 pm
to deter people more and why is it important for that to be a specific law against this? because a legal right already of course you can't go round injecting people with some nonsense with things to alter their consciousness. yeah, it's illegal if you're doing it to inject poison into someone or for reasons of gratification . for reasons of gratification. but i don't think at the moment it is illegal just to push one of these short small needles into your arm, which you hardly feel, and i think that's the thing, as maisie was saying, this is about nudging behaviour, it's about sending a clear message. it ain't funny. it will land you in trouble. you'll have a criminal record. you won't be able to get a job easily and it's real difficult. it's going to be real difficult. you don't go there. that's you say don't go there. that's a really good the criminal record point. basic. we to point. so it's basic. we need to get tough make people realise get tough to make people realise that joke. it's that it's not a joke. it's really it could be really serious. it could be really serious. it could be really serious. it could be really serious consequences for really serious. it could be real if serious consequences for really serious. it could be real if you )us consequences for really serious. it could be real if you ifs consequences for really serious. it could be real if you if you 1sequences for really serious. it could be real if you if you do quences for really serious. it could be real if you if you do this ces for really serious. it could be realif you if you do this do for really serious. it could be realif you if you do this do you you if you if you do this do you . and it could have been a lot worse you goodness. well, i
1:47 pm
think this is something that really upset me as a parent is that it changed maisie's view on what was a sensible thing to do on that evening. maisie is a sensible girl. she's and she's at typekit. when we get to 1:00 in the morning makes want to go home she wants go to bed she's had enough that maisie was up partying in her words until five 6:00 in the morning and her words to me were i would have done anything anyone me done anything anyone asked me to done anything anyone asked me to do and terrifies me because as a parent you know you your children up and you teach them to don't go with strangers. don't do this. you know, when younger but actually if you're inhibited and you've been given something don't know what you've been it change your been given and it change your mind if maisie have accepted to do with somebody would have given her consent but it have been her consent horrifying. so yeah it really is and as a parent that makes me go cold because how on earth would she ever go on to prove a court of
1:48 pm
law. she didn't that she she it willingly consents and that's terrifying and that could have damaged for her rest of her life. you know it makes me quite emotional because i think it could change everything . and could change everything. and there's a lot of girls out there and boys out there that this has happened to. how are you and yourself after after a year change, you get nervous when you go out to a club. i'm a lot better now. yeah. the star of the from after it happened to probably couple of months ago i really struggled with anxiety and going out and had to come home early . and it has changed home early. and it has changed you. yeah i could cope in a big like all my close friends there. like i like i put on a brave face and i'm like, oh, i'm out with your friends, i'm having a good time, but all my all my close friends know they were blessed. so they blessed. they were so good. they were start to get were soon as i start to get a bit panicky, they were like, right, we're going home. it's fine, yeah, i've fine, but be fair. yeah, i've like race and been like recent race and i've been a better it's a while better but it's taken a while and see an example of my
1:49 pm
and now we see an example of my cis people power through you on those green benches trying to change the law because of my and i think glory that is really the treat of being an mp that if somebody comes to with a what is a social issue there are times when you can do something about and if we can get a result out of this that over time shows that spiking particularly by injection but also by putting drugs drinks actually shrinks as a problem that's being reported to the police or not reported then at the margin. that is a really useful social change that means parents like rosie will not have this sort of nightmare as again, and students like can go out and have fun without having to worry about that risk. that's yeah, absolutely it seems so. everybody watching will just love wishing best and know that you'll keep fighting but may say your mp could get you a change
1:50 pm
in the law. we wish it hadn't come to this. yeah but at least something good. good coming out of that. yeah. no, definitely. rosie. nice and richard. thank thank you. thank you . it's time thank you. thank you. it's time to reflect on those who have made a real in 2020 to this includes a mum of two kate wilson who won the hardest working festive feat competition for her dedication to coventry her best friends jenny nominated kate for all her hard work and this award is designed to honour people who truly deserve to put their feet. this christmas, kate joins , me now. hello, kate. joins, me now. hello, kate. happy christmas . you forjoining happy christmas. you for joining us . thank happy christmas. you for joining us. thank you. merry christmas . us. thank you. merry christmas. could you please tell us what is your charity and who started it 7 your charity and who started it ? so i started when i was working for another charity in coventry and i was seeing the need for clothes for a lot of people and there wasn't anywhere that you could send them to other than the charity. and if you're really struggling

1:53 pm
. but appreciate everyone . but we do appreciate everyone who can donate towards whether it's financially , whether it's financially, whether it's donating the second line clothing or new clothing as as we have had great success. so things an amazon wishlist , things like an amazon wishlist, people bought things and people have bought things and sent lovely well sent them to us lovely well congratulation again katy that's katy wilson clothing coventry well done and all your charity work and thank you very much and have a good christmas let's have a of your views a look a couple of your views emailed in to please please emailed in to say please please stop being critical of the primary . could you really do any primary. could you really do any better ? i thought religion was better? i thought religion was inclusive . could you cope with inclusive. could you cope with the constant haranguing the poor miners constantly getting ? miners constantly getting? religion is inclusive that does not mean that does not mean that everything goes quite the opposite actually. but no, i couldn't do better . opposite actually. but no, i couldn't do better. i'm not a politician. i haven't put myself up for election. i think it's quite up for election. i think it's quhe be up for election. i think it's quite be prime quite simple to be prime minister the minister ready to protect the borders protect people's freedoms the way. freedoms and get out the way. that's you've got to do , that's what you've got to do, keith god's love for keith says. god's love for everyone. merry christmas. what lovely message. thank you for that, keith bob email say.
