6:03 am
santa's lots morning. but first we're talk about the we're going to talk about the royals king charles royals because king charles is going make his annual going to make his first annual christmas today 3 pm. as you christmas today at 3 pm. as you learn yesterday, 3 pm. specifically at 3 pm, it will mark the first occasion in which a king delivers a christmas message. yes royal commentator rafe heydel—mankoo told gb news viewers about how monumental today's address be. this is a speech of profound historical is 90 years actually since the very first speech king george the fifth delivered in 1932. so important that event in itself also 70 is this the queen's first christmas speech was delivered in 1952, and the king is only the third king in history to have delivered a christmas speech. his great grandfather george the fifth, his great uncle. it was eighth, didn't long enough give didn't read long enough to give a then his a speech but then his grandfather, george grandfather, king george the stayed until 1951. so it's stayed up until 1951. so it's amazing to think of 90 years almost 70 of those was just our own queen delivering. those speeches will, of speeches and this will, of course, the first televised one and inspired decision, i think, to have george's chapel,
6:04 am
to have in st george's chapel, windsor, obviously, where his parents are now lying at rest together with his mother's committal service, only taking a few ago, really in few weeks ago, really in september. and i think was inconceivable if he didn't pay tribute , her extraordinary reign tribute, her extraordinary reign and legacy, which culminated, of course in the glorious platinum jubilee which we saw over the summer , the perfect cherry on summer, the perfect cherry on the cake of a life of service. you know, when the queen gave her first well, her christmas message was actually a tribute to her late husband who had died her christmas message was her first christmas message was a father, who had a tribute to her father, who had just died then also just died. and then she also pledged herself , the country, pledged herself, the country, and that she will carry his and said that she will carry his traditions. think can traditions. and i think we can expect the thing from the expect the same thing from the king you watching 3 pm? king will you be watching 3 pm? you will. i'll be driving . you will. i'll be driving. actually, i'll be drawing from manchester, so i'll have it on the radio gb news radio. gb news radio upload. yeah radio cheekily upload. but yeah , momentous occasion though, , a momentous occasion though, isn't not the isn't it? because it's not the first that king first time that it's king charles. the first charles. it's also the first time it's televised king time that it's a televised king even time that it's a televised king ever. oh and they were quite impressed . time we did did
6:05 am
impressed. time we did did a speech after his after his mother died. people are saying he did a very good job. i think he did a very good job. i think he should quite a good job he should do quite a good job today. well, apparently, he should do quite a good job tocrafe well, apparently, he should do quite a good job tocrafe saying, pparently, he should do quite a good job tocrafe saying, ppecourse, as rafe was saying, of course, is occasion where he is the only occasion where he actually kind of writes it himself, free from the political spin so it is spin and everything. so it is very just just king very much just just king charles. want us to say in charles. you want us to say in his own words. yes and i've got lots of questions the lots of questions about the royals because, you know, royals today because, you know, with on with harry with everything on with harry and meghan, i wonder how much they'll at the they'll talk about it at the christmas dinner i know christmas dinner table. i know the relatives the drama i the relatives the family drama i mean will they avoid it or will it be something that's a topic, of course. i mean, and of course. i mean, harry and meghan that they can meghan won't be that they can talk as much they speak talk about as much they speak freely, will be freely, which i think will be quite actually. yeah. quite good actually. yeah. can you . we'll have ask you imagine. we'll have to ask pandora later about pandora coming on later who going coming on later and who is going to through everything. to run us through everything. royal cameron walker, royal and also cameron walker, a royal reporter. be live with us as so we can ask all of as well so we can ask all of these questions. prince andrew as apparently. it as well, apparently. well, it definitely won't be talking about it about that now. it well, it definitely why we told you about that apparently that but apparently has been kicked office so but
6:06 am
kicked out of the office so but that's fair enough that lots isn't it really. i think, you know not really got much work going on does not it's fair going on does not it's a fair it's point absolutely. it's a fair point absolutely. well look today is really all about you as well as, course, about you as well as, of course, the you can see that for the king as you can see that for us want to hear from you. us we do want to hear from you. we smatterings today's we will be smatterings today's programme pictures programme with your pictures your i your christmas pictures. so i did show last year and only did this show last year and only pitched for christmas pats on it popped pitched for christmas pats on it popped off. yes. you've got the pubuc popped off. yes. you've got the public no talking. so all the same thing today gbs gb news dot uk to keep coming in we're going to share as many as we can and as we were saying is the first time today that a king's speech will be televised here in the well listening to the queen's on christmas day is a tradition of many people participating in worldwide and many will be tuning to hear our new monarch one. yes and the royal family have posted a video of the queen's very first speech back on christmas day . queen's very first speech back on christmas day. in queen's very first speech back on christmas day . in 1950 725 on christmas day. in 1950 725 years ago. my grandfather
6:07 am
broadcast the first of these christmas messages today is another landmark because television has made it possible for many of you see me in your homes on christmas day my own often gather round to watch television as . they are at this television as. they are at this moment and that is how i imagine you now i very much hope that this new medium will make my christmas message more personal and direct i hope the 1958 may bnng and direct i hope the 1958 may bring god's blessing and the things you for long and i wish you all young and old, wherever may be , all the fun and may be, all the fun and enjoyment and the peace of a very happy christmas . all bless. very happy christmas. all bless. it's quite , isn't it? watching. it's quite, isn't it? watching. watching it and this was saying

financial support to those in need. our national reporter theo chikomba has the story. need. our national reporter theo chikomba has the story . what is chikomba has the story. what is your favourite christmas song ? your favourite christmas song? uh silent . wow. we'll try that uh silent. wow. we'll try that again, shall. uh silent. wow. we'll try that again, shall . yeah. so theo again, shall. yeah. so theo chikomba has talking to crisis charity . who are the leading charity. who are the leading charity. who are the leading charity for homelessness? one thing i will say is one thing i will say about this is just while we wait for that actually, which is the it's all very well and good look. obviously we're having laugh here having a bit of a laugh here because, you know, it's christmas morning and everything's why everything's wrong, so why not want but want to laugh about it? but for a lot people now, if you are a lot of people now, if you are watching home or you're listening to your watching listening to your radio watching online, not christmas, i'm online, it's not christmas, i'm aware a time. and aware can be a lonely time. and i that everyone's you know i know that everyone's you know out and family out and about and seeing family and stuff like that but i think it can really hammer home for people that it's not people sometimes that it's not always time. if always the happiest time. so if you feeling alone, feel you are feeling alone, then feel free us have a chat free to email us and have a chat with us. you've yeah, we're here. have. we're here. i was
6:29 am
here. we have. we're here. i was absolutely absolutely. and we can to you. well i believe can chat to you. well i believe now time lucky people, now third time lucky people, theatre about theatre companies package about homelessness christmas is ready for so let's it away. for us, so let's take it away. it's a year where we've it's been a year where we've seen high levels of inflation in and an increasing cost living causing households to spend one and a half times their income on the necessities of according to the necessities of according to the homelessness crisis. this one of a number of hotels across country where they'll accommodate who've become homeless . we see people of all homeless. we see people of all ages, all backgrounds and, more and more people who just homelessness happen to them really quick here. the big difference this year is the cost living crisis really is driving homelessness numbers up and particularly we see people just can't pay their rent . particularly we see people just can't pay their rent. housing benefit has been frozen for years whilst rents have gone up 12 15% in some years whilst rents have gone up 1215% in some areas. so it's recipe for disaster really. and why we're seeing so many people come to us for help. the increasing price of energy, rent and food forced more people into
6:30 am
poverty. and the charities say . poverty. and the charities say. if things don't change, they 300,000 households will be pushed into homelessness next year. millions of people pushed into homelessness next year . millions of people across year. millions of people across the country have faced unsustainable debt alongside the increased cost of living now crisis are offering up to 6000 people an opportunity to find somewhere to stay this christmas. but the challenge for them is to make sure people don't find themselves back on streets after the new year working on the front line. jason has with the charity every christmas for 19 years this year is no different as he'll be working alongside other medical professionals to meet people's needs. a lot of guests . the only needs. a lot of guests. the only time in the year where the health access health care that's because they don't feel they can do because they're homeless living on the streets or they don't know, you know, they don't know because things change know how because things change when got home. but when you haven't got home. but also sometimes when people go into hospital or gp practises, they don't get the best care
6:31 am
what they deserve people what they deserve because people see homeless, see somebody who's homeless, they see the person. so they don't see the person. so this very, very different feel . this very, very different feel. we give people the time it takes 2 minutes to sort our guest out thatis 2 minutes to sort our guest out that is fine if it takes 2 hours, that is absolutely fine. let me see a range of health conditions as well last year, 75% of people who received accommodation in hotels like this didn't return to the streets , something they're streets, something they're hoping to replicate this year. the come back lots more come for you, including the top stories today and i'll tell you fantastic, friends andrew and rubina khan, they're going to be joining us in the studio for the newspapers. but first, patrick christys gets wiped out . what christys gets wiped out. what the heck is this sucker punch? it's tough to knock you out , it's tough to knock you out, right? we all agree that the big red ball went really well. so well .
6:32 am
6:34 am
6:35 am
minute now. maybe there we go. it's a dog . lovely stuff. curry it's a dog. lovely stuff. curry yes. so we've been asking for festive pets have we have. and what cute one this is. she says good morning and merry christmas from my pet barnaby. barnaby i like the name barnaby for adult great. a strong name. strong name. debbie says this is no apparently merry christmas . not apparently merry christmas. not merry christmas to all it gb news says debbie thank you, debbie merry christmas to you as well. nala is very cute. i'm going to say that much and dave, juue going to say that much and dave, julie says, happy christmas ali. this freaky, by the way, because he probably said, we have a screen in front of us, right? so they pop it up. and it makes me think that this is me now, but it's not as a isn't it? so merry christmas ali and patrick, my cats out playing but this is his own christmas tree. there we go. what has his own tree . what your cat has his own tree. oh, is the little one oh, is that the little one there? oh, that's nice. oh, thanks. nice we involved chris christie's in touch. she says
6:36 am
this is bullseye i oh, it's great with your hair. he saw his stocking last night, christmas eve and sat it all night. wouldn't go to bed at seven so yeah i. wouldn't go to bed at seven so yeahi.i wouldn't go to bed at seven so yeah i. i made a smart gorgeous dog he is bullseye a very clever dog. well, happy to you and bullseye right. okay so apparently , apparently we've got apparently, apparently we've got to do some work today. we do apparently doesn't claims there's all sorts. i mean, the news doesn't take a day off. well we're going to take you through some of that news because. the mirror's website is leading the festivities. we leading with the festivities. we can with can expect today with expectations of lavish celebrations behind closed doors, which is exactly what would expect because it's the royal family it makes sense, isn't it? yes. the daily is also running with the royals and last night's christmas carol service. they say princess charlotte , the they say princess charlotte, the star of the show . oh, they go star of the show. oh, they go right. the independent off focusing on ukraine this christmas with the headline the fight to lives on ukraine's bloodiest front and you have and
6:37 am
it is christmas day today if you haven't noticed there's no papers to go for. usually we have a big stack of papers in front of us, but not this morning. as patrick says, the news doesn't stop. there are news doesn't stop. so there are top stories we can talk about. and joining this morning to and joining us this morning to go through them is lawyer and futurist and futurist andrew eappen and author khan with very author rubina khan with very pleased you . good pleased to have you. good morning. good morning, mary christmas to you joining christmas thanks to you joining us and let's start with us and rubina let's start with you shall we and that quite awkward video of rishi sunak. tell us what happened . so rishi tell us what happened. so rishi sunak visited a homeless soup kitchen and he had this very awkward conversation with a homeless man. and one of the things he said was he he talked about his finance background and he asked, are you in business? and i think the most of what the man's was, i wouldn't , but i man's was, i wouldn't, but i don't know. i'd like to get through christmas first. nothing at that point prime minister should have really eased what he
6:38 am
was talking to, where he was and what it shows it's not just about a prime minister who's out of touch, but fact that he doesn't realise it is from his conversation the number of families and couples and people in the uk at this moment. families and couples and people in the uk at this moment . and i in the uk at this moment. and i would just like to say , i mean, would just like to say, i mean, i'm from tower hamlets , east i'm from tower hamlets, east london and christmas day. i know neighbours in poplar sister christine who runs a charity will be delivering christmas dinners for people who lonely, who don't have access to food. and at that point you remind of the greatness of this country in terms of volunteering . he should terms of volunteering. he should remember that our minister. yeah, well i care what you mean. i think i past that. me feels a little bit. sorry for you because . not because he's uber because. not because he's uber wealthy, right hear me out on the bus. bus you know, when he's so rich and, his wife is so rich that, maybe naturally is a little bit of touch, but i think it doesn't help himself and stuff like that. we have seen do
6:39 am
things like not be able to use a tap. yes something and also just stuff like this andrew case thomas because almost christmas speech. yeah i think absolutely and that's his interest. he used that a lot. you judge just on rishi though. you're absolutely right about that . but it right about doing that. but it was lady sarah hussey was the lady sarah hussey moment, wasn't it sort where are you and getting it wrong you from and getting it wrong all the time work on that sort of basis. i do feel sorry for them i look at that they've got to try and make small talk so trying to make that sense i'd be a bit more generous talk about being so right. being generous. so you're right. keir say a keir stauber you say what a rotten we've had that it's all the conservatives fault. we've had prime had three. we've had three prime ministers. rather like ministers. so it's rather like buses. you have prime buses. you have a prime minister, at minister, three come at once. i refuse this basically to say refuse this is basically to say this the opportunity where we deserve break at christmas . he deserve break at christmas. he also used this christmas message for praising ukraine saying that they're an inspiration to us all. and i have to say just in the interest balance, i always
6:40 am
try and provide a bit of balance there are lots of people in who don't want the war either. and i think the struggle that they're having being forced into that sort of stuff is also tricky as well. i ask this about this stuff. yes now i know the people , they're tripping over each other , both sides of the other, both sides of the atlantic to , you know, to put atlantic to, you know, to put the focus on ukraine. and we've spoken about homeless people in country and now this isn't about me going on some rant about how we should be not spending money in the ukraine. no, but if i was in the ukraine. no, but if i was in dire straits in this country , i think i might be a little bit miffed at the constant tirade from downing street about where with you . we're with you. where with you. we're with you. well. well you know, we should be at foodbanks and they are i think, as andrew said , a think, as andrew said, a balance, in the way look balance, too, in the way we look things. think it's things. and i think it's important that we do stand by ukraine because is part of being british is part of being able to stand up and we have to stand to russians and russia's invasion of ukraine. but as i said, i
6:41 am
think and we hope we might provide that balance. but if i could just go back to that issue aboutis could just go back to that issue about is our prime minister going to the homeless unit? i think he needs to be more in these places if he's really truly going to be accountable by saying he's running country so it is funding a country that's fair enough but he's the prime minister. he can i know i agree with you on one point. that is not always his fault. it's the briefing that gets. is it also important for him to realise that and by him being with me, is me people, people with struggles , i think he will see struggles, i think he will see a difference . yeah, i think you're difference. yeah, i think you're absolutely right. if you're going to be inspirational, make sure your properly briefed. so what happens is you've got as part being a prime minister of you've got to run the country but you've also got to be seen and in order be you go meet and in order to be you go meet different different different people in different and should have turned and his team should have turned out say you're going to meet out to say you're going to meet these people a few words these people here's a few words and on and so forth. we will
6:42 am
and so on and so forth. we will you might want to exchange you, rather your foot in rather than putting your foot in the that. but if the counter just on that. but if you remember rishi's rishi you do remember rishi's rishi sunak is he sunak other moment is when he went to group of young went to visit group of young people they him do, people and they asked him do, i think his coke. yes and think about his coke. yes and i just had to remind . but he is i just had to remind. but he is i mean, on a lighter note, is way he said, yes, i enjoy coke, i love coke. and you realise saying it to young people you should be. that's correct. yeah. he had to correct. those are similar so don't want to remember that. absolutely. his favourite thing have favourite thing to have a mcdonald's was something mcdonald's it was something that's the for that's been off the menu for like years right. yes. well like five years right. yes. well something favourite for something my favourite thing for mcdonald's last i'm to speak, mcdonald's is last i'm to speak, he said absolutely they will work basis. believe we work on that basis. i believe we actually video of this actually have the video of this awkward have awkward exchange. so let's have little to this as you get little listen to this as you get the whole of the economy out. well, that is what i'm trying to do. i tell you, i'm to do business what do you have a you must visit johnson . this sorry. must visit johnson. this sorry. actually, you know. no i've seen
6:43 am
that again. the thing is i'm just one and you know i'm not i'm not i'm not slamming rishi or anything like that but what i'm saying is he's clearly used to around with a load of chaps from the and the only type from the city and the only type of conversation is what did. that's yes but that's the guy. yes but business. yeah but but he's. where are you from. he have said he didn't on the latest . he didn't on the latest. exactly. sarah moment. exactly. the lazy sarah moment. so it's that sort of problem. small talk and what i loved is one of the papers last week gave a guy to small talk about how you should do it and on and so forth. the inoffensive question is and i go back to what i was saying beforehand, people get briefed things. briefed on these things. he should have been properly briefed around and say, briefed to turn around and say, here's what you can talk about. do not ask. you say, is there do not ask. so you say, is there a bigger here, which is that you shouldn't briefed on shouldn't have to be briefed on how small talk with how to make small talk with other beings. you should other human beings. you should be to avoid that sort of situation. but this what situation. but this is what i'm saying, which is coming saying, which i think is coming indictment where we in indictment of where we are in politics. sides, politics. i'm from both sides, from sides, really, which is from all sides, really, which is not the total. why can't we just
6:44 am
have some more normal? yeah how are doing. yeah, it are you? how you doing. yeah, it would fine. yeah, think would be fine. yeah, i think that came normal context that came across normal context . fantastic. which his new adviser , ellie costello . i do . adviser, ellie costello. i do. hello. right. what we next? what we go next. cost of living, is it? yes ribena cost of living? yes i mean, tough year for many. yeah it is. absolutely. and i'm again reminded of sister christine and the work she does, but also just around where we're living as there's a increase of a lot young people who young people say who are going to food banks on behalf of their families . and i think what we families. and i think what we need to is the dignity of families is the cost of living. it brings that human sense of shame , many families that they shame, many families that they have to go and the food bank and i've known who have gone to food banks but i've actually tried to hide the fact that they go in there just because that shame and to hide it from their children as well to make them feel as though it's special
6:45 am
christmas is going to be special, you also have to at the number people who are now number of people who are now shopping at charity to be able to provide the presence , their to provide the presence, their families and i read something where i yes, the house of commons, they have them ordered 1500 puddings and 159 turkey days. perhaps they should distribute that to people who really, really need it . it's really, really need it. it's going to be really hard. christmas for some people. i was in a food bank a couple weeks ago and the lady that i was basically you're saying that robina, that these are working families both and dad are families where both and dad are working, they're on zero working, but they're on zero hour contracts or minimum wage living they can't living wage and they can't afford to feed their children that into foodbank secret that go into foodbank secret to try to try and put food on try and to try and put food on the table which quite scary the table which quite a scary thought. totally scary. thought. it's totally scary. and one of charities i'm one of the charities i'm involved is called uk, involved with is called uk, which a food redistribution. which is a food redistribution. and is our patron and and camilla is our patron and brilliant in terms of raising money awareness. but we need to talk about these issues, what i love as well, number one at the
6:46 am
moment for christmas is ladbaby . this is the fifth year in a row that he's done it to a wonderful group called out mark and roxanne hoyle . and what they and roxanne hoyle. and what they do the money is for food banks is the trussell and it's raising making aware that there are these issues so he does it wonderful things about i love sausage rolls and all that sort of stuff to make that make sense but he's one so all credit to him raising in a fun way because you can have fun whilst also raising is the whole raising issues is the whole issue the scandal of people needing the between heating and eating more that we talk about this more to shine spotlight on it the more we can find solutions okay rise andrew the king's speech . oh, come on king's speech. oh, come on something a bit lighter. king's speech. oh, come on something a bit lighter . this is something a bit lighter. this is day . do not get something a bit lighter. this is day. do not get himself something a bit lighter. this is day . do not get himself off day. do not get himself off somewhere. we've got cost of living, crisis let's just talk about me. nice. i'm sorry so. this is the first speech. it's going to be since 1951. can believe that when king charles grandfather king george the sixth gave a speech. obviously for the last several years, we've had her majesty 70 years
6:47 am
doing christmas speech. and i think for all of us on this table, that is the only speech we've known from a monarch in our lifetime. 3:00 rounds around the telly watching that sort of basis. the telly watching that sort of bafis. i the telly watching that sort of basis. i loved that basis. what i loved is that george fifth gave the first christmas speech originally and it written by rudyard it was written by rudyard kipling . and you believe who kipling. and can you believe who did wrote jungle did who wrote the jungle book. so the king, i'm not of the so i'm the king, i'm not of the sweetness, i'm just looking so you could welcome, suppose, as you could welcome, i suppose, as we talk about what might he's going celebrate, obviously going to celebrate, obviously mother's life the queen's speech that she gave she celebrated her father's life and the last queen's speech that she gave she celebrated hospice prince philip's life . so i hope that philip's life. so i hope that charles, who will be speaking, i think at 3:00, we will be tuned in. we'll be celebrating a fantastic 70 year reign that we enjoyed at the jubilee. i mean, he we're all down there just in the summer, so an extra ordinary year to preside over us. and i think he's coming to his own people are always worried about
6:48 am
charles what they want. what's he going to be like as a monarch, i think is really getting into the role quite well. don't you? people received them well, they? them quite well, didn't they? that first that he gave that first speech that he gave about that he about mother policies that he chose words in chose exactly the right words in that . so i'm sure we're that moment. so i'm sure we're going see similar. but i going to see similar. but i think you're right, andrew, that is yeah. and is going be emotional. yeah. and reflect her majesty and reflect on on her majesty and it's to it's going to be it's going to it's going to be emotional for people watching as. well, yeah, no. and i certainly agree with you, ali, and i've read, he's and i think from i've read, he's going constantly say on his going to constantly say on his own faith , he's also going to own faith, he's also going to talk embracing diversity talk about embracing diversity and it a strong country. and making it a strong country. and i think from what i mean, i'm not saying that what he said, but i am i this is where he will go to and from his own work in terms of reaching out to diverse communities . work in terms of reaching out to diverse communities. i think that will be there and that will resonate with many people across the uk. it'll be interesting to see if he mentions harry and meghan oh, i hope he does. i hope he wants the queen and. obviously she would hate a divided families like most . the
6:49 am
divided families like most. the heads of the family want that to be reunited. no doubt he'll be plugging available on plugging the book available on january the 10th and all good bookshops. january the 10th and all good bookshops . well, sorry, this bookshops. well, i'm sorry, this was before the final was recorded before the final three episodes of the now you may recognise this voice actually from one of those documentaries those opposing you are you laminates? yes. i use my voice. oh, what did you say. i wouldn't just be your voice. what simply repeated i said what simply repeated that i said . i said that meghan was only focussed and focussed on tea parties and tiaras . oh great quote thing and tiaras. oh great quote thing and not true saying that when i said it. but i did and i was i was watching it and so you must be so upset. so upset, pat for the jeremy clarkson is not you the meghan i don't mean those guys i'm waiting my royalties of course. right so, robina, i believe you all sorts of was a multicultural christmas . yeah. i multicultural christmas. yeah. i mean there's very much ornate in here in the retail gazette , it's here in the retail gazette, it's about sainsbury's lidl and tesco, christmas not resonating with black communities is on in
6:50 am
terms of the stereotype so i'm not quite sure what where actual adverts that but what i would say is that for all retail we need to at it in an economic terms . the need to at it in an economic terms. the more you need to at it in an economic terms . the more you resonate terms. the more you resonate with the community, those communities will shop in those shops. communities will shop in those shops . and if we look at at shops. and if we look at at black and ethnic communities contributes to up to £25 billion worth of the british economy , if worth of the british economy, if we look at the curry and the kebab, that's about £7 billion. and so if you resonate as a business, a company, you will your revenue , do you want them your revenue, do you want them to do? what should they do to resonate more? well, in terms of sainsbury's i'm not sure what the adverts are. they're but the sainsbury's that i know which is quite near our home, one of the things that they do in tesco's does this as well during the month ramadan they have a special store, they have a special store, they have a special to encourage consumers from the muslim community. you also see through during faith as
6:51 am
well. and so the more you do this you actually economically it's better. it's better in terms revenue income for companies. yeah and you're if you do and if you don't aren't you do and if you don't aren't you on that sort of basis that people never get it right is either to multicultural or not enough and i think sometimes we have to call it sometimes you have to call it sometimes you have to call it sometimes you have to say, look, they're trying make it balance. we should rid of prejudice, we should get rid of prejudice, we should get rid of prejudice, we should prejudice and should be blind to prejudice and turn out and look, they are turn out and say, look, they are retailers that work the basis retailers that work on the basis they to appeal to everybody they want to appeal to everybody . way of doing . what's the best way of doing it? you might remember the early benetton adverts basically had people creed, people from every colour creed, religion on so forth religion and so on and so forth to touch everybody on to try and touch everybody on that premise , people that sort of premise, people would turn round and say, well this you're trying too hard this is you're trying too hard or you're not trying enough. what the balance, how can they get right? because you can get it right? because you can get it right? because you can get essentially, dare get away in essentially, dare i say. call me a radical. say. yeah, call me a radical. but it might just be to look at the yeah, look at the% the census. yeah, look at the% which is of various different cultures and creeds. i'm just representing that in adverts.
6:52 am
alternatively or alternatively what people say . would you want what people say. would you want to sell to the different ? so to sell to the different? so there may maybe different things that appeal to different or different parts of society. i different parts of society. so i think see , i think for me think you see, i think for me personally it has the opposite effects if can tell, that effects if you can tell, that people just shamelessly people are just like shamelessly crowbar oc the like because crowbar ring oc the like because i think it loses impact right so i think it loses impact right so i agree with you. i mean just looking at this, i'm reminded of my childhood when i came to this country the mid 1970s, i was the only child of colour in the school that i went to. i was born in kent and i remember in 1975 and september when i first came that a young girl in, my class, and she asked me if i was a right. and i didn't know what the was. and the reason i didn't know what a was because . i came know what a was because. i came from bangladesh. i didn't understand what racism was. and she asked me what was i didn't know. i went home and i tried to look for what this was . and you look for what this was. and you only looked , i think it was
6:53 am
only looked, i think it was a few days later looked on the jamjoon available and i back and looked at this image and i still remember it as a child. then i don't look like this person. you you're comparing me to this this image and i don't look like that. and that occurred me that is my lived experience . and when is my lived experience. and when i think of that, i was reminded of this the retail gazette article . well, just a very article. well, just a very little quick . i absolutely 100% little quick. i absolutely 100% appreciate the point. you just made. apparently, i literally legally have to do something now so which is apologies to the use of word . but it was of of that word. but it was of course in context, jonathan, otherwise i get shouted out . so otherwise i get shouted out. so there go. not again that there we go. not again that right. guess what else right. okay. so guess what else we got in the album of the album, the side of the face of singer maxi , who is age 65. he singer maxi, who is age 65. he was dance music's poet and he was dance music's poet and he was known as maxwell fraser was the original name klauber. was known as maxwell fraser was the original name klauber . a the original name klauber. a classic was in somebody i know you sing it every morning that you sing it every morning that you get, but they basically the
6:54 am
headune you get, but they basically the headline pyramid stage they the pioneers of stadium dance music and this has been a year where we've lost too many much too young. you know, terry holt 2016, though. can i just say 2014 was the year when basically it was just relentless. yeah. so i was working a newspaper and it was just every single day there was just every single day there was someone famous, the public about her died in 2016. george michael fryston it was absolute and was knocked off the number one spot. this was also the aussie christmas when that was right end of the year and we had a year of it anyway. so yeah, no, no, but, but there is actually sort of thing it's been actually sort of thing it's been a terrible year, maybe not bad as but we've lost lot of as 2016, but we've lost lot of people in a very age and lots of them tend to be in the sort of media. i like they're getting media. so i like they're getting a lot exposure, but there are a lot of exposure, but there are lots people you look at lots of people and you look at the rates, so and so the death rates, so on and so forth, it has been quite a tragic year. so it is difficult. i always whenever we celebrate christmas, want be christmas, we want to be very jolly there are lots jolly about it. there are lots of who'll be spending
6:55 am
of people who'll be spending christmas the first without christmas the first time without one ones. yeah. one of those loved ones. yeah. and heart goes out and actually our heart goes out to them as well obviously. we're finding difficult today, finding it difficult today, i believe you actually believe would you actually have a messages we can a video messages that we can share you now, but now keep share with you now, but now keep myself depressed. that myself depressed. still, that night candlelight night i write by candlelight i find in fundamental so find in fundamental movement. so when black, this insomniac when it's black, this insomniac take an original tack, keep beast in my nature on this ceaseless attack it reminds me of the good old days and the age aren't really young as. of the good old days and the age aren't really young as . well, aren't really young as. well, there's no age at so maybe combine the age together, but it's still it's still though he was , i should say he was also a was, i should say he was also a fan of crystal palace. so all the crystal palace will be singing along to that and an associate director of crystal palace as well. i seem to remember or what. thank you very much . picking way through much. picking your way through the us you'll be you'll be the news us you'll be you'll be back in a light in the next houn back in a light in the next hour. yeah. andrew rubino, you so so much . right. wow so thank you so much. right. wow than 100,000 ukrainian refugees have come to the uk since the war began , many will be

7:03 am
now our top story, charles will make his first annual christmas speech today . well, it will mark speech today. well, it will mark the first occasion which a king delivers televised christmas messages and royal rafe heydel—mankoo told itv news yesterday. this is yesterday, we're going back in time. people have a monumental how monumental today's address will be. this is speech of profound historical is 90 years actually since the very speech king george the fifth delivered in 1932. so important for that event in itself also is this the queen's first christmas speech was delivered in 1952, and the king is only the third king in history to have delivered a christmas speech. his great grandfather, the fifth, his great uncle. it the eighth didn't read long enough to give a speech. then his grandfather, king george, the sixth, stayed until 1951. so sixth, stayed up until 1951. so it's amazing of 90 is it's amazing to think of 90 is almost 70th. this was just around queen delivering those speeches. around queen delivering those speeches . and this of speeches. and this will of course, be first televised course, be the first televised one, inspired decision, one, an inspired decision, i think, to have it in st george's windsor. obviously where his
7:04 am
parents are now lying at rest together with his mother's committal service only taking place few weeks really in place a few weeks ago. really in september . and i think it would september. and i think it would be inconceivable if he didn't pay be inconceivable if he didn't pay to her extraordinary pay tribute to her extraordinary reign which reign and legacy which culminates it, of course, in the glorious platinum which we saw over the perfect cherry on the cake of a life of service . you cake of a life of service. you know, when the queen gave her first well, her last message was actually a tribute . her late actually a tribute. her late husband, who had died her first christmas message was a tribute to. her father, who had just died and she also pledged died and then she also pledged herself to country and said herself to the country and said that will carry his that she will carry on his traditions. think we can traditions. and i think we can expect the same thing from the king well, as you just heard, today marks a historic event as it's the first time a king's speech be televised here in speech will be televised here in the well listening to the the uk. well listening to the queen's speech christmas day queen's speech on christmas day is tradition that many people participated worldwide, and many will to hear the new will be tuning to hear the new monarch as well. why they. yes, and we've managed to get a small video very video of her majesty's very speech back on christmas day in
7:05 am
1957. let's have a look. listen 25 years ago , my grandfather 25 years ago, my grandfather broadcast first of these christmas messages today is another landmark because television has made it possible for many of you to see in your homes on christmas day . my own homes on christmas day. my own family often gather round to watch television as they are at this moment . and that is how this moment. and that is how i imagine you now i much hope that this new medium will make my christmas message more personal and direct . i hope the 1958 may and direct. i hope the 1958 may bnng and direct. i hope the 1958 may bring you god's blessing and the things you for long and so i wish you all young and old wherever may be all the fun and enjoyment and the peace of a very happy christmas . do you

jewish holiday of hanukkah or however i suppose hanukkah as i got a hanukkah hanukkah. there you go. right. okay fair enough. but tonight marks seventh night of hanukkah, which will end tomorrow on, boxing day. well, the celebration commemorates the rededication during the second century bc. of, rededication during the second century bc. of , the second century bc. of, the second temple in jerusalem . and joining temple in jerusalem. and joining us now is jonathan , a doctor to us now is jonathan, a doctor to tell us more about this special celebrations . jonathan, what is celebrations. jonathan, what is the behind hanukkah? well, hanukkah is a celebration of, light over darkness and. specifically, it looks back to a victory that due to maccabee and his fighters had against assimilation in israel, jerusalem, specifically the jewish temple in jerusalem had been seized by antiochus the fourth epiphanies who had stopped jews being able to practise their religion there. and he fought back . it was and he fought back. it was really an extraordinary victory because over three years they fought a tiny army of these people from the countryside who
7:12 am
the massive syrian army . and in the massive syrian army. and in respect of that jews since then have have reflected on this houday have have reflected on this holiday as one where we stand up for what we believe in our religious belief or traditional or traditional practises sometimes things that aren't really that fashionable today against the powers and forces of over assimilation . and what have over assimilation. and what have you got here in of us? as you said, it's about bringing into darkness and you do light a candle every night upon it. do there are eight candles to be lit. so there's a candles here on the hanukkah . and the reason on the hanukkah. and the reason we do eight candles is when they did rededicate temple, when they managed was managed to reclaim it, there was only oil left purified to only jar of oil left purified to light the eternal that light the eternal light that they little the time on the they kept little the time on the menorah, bit this menorah, which is a bit this with different number and that with a different number and that candle that oil lasted eight days instead of the one it was supposed to. in respect that supposed to. and in respect that miracle, is why light a miracle, this is why we light a candle day for eight days. candle every day for eight days. and ninth one here is the candle every day for eight days. and we ninth one here is the candle every day for eight days. and we used] one here is the candle every day for eight days. and we used tone here is the candle every day for eight days. and we used to light.e is the candle every day for eight days. and we used to light. the the one we used to light. the others. quite nice. others. so it's quite nice. festival have as it's festival it doesn't have as it's not major festival like rosh
7:13 am
not a major festival like rosh hashanah, yom kippur. it has a there are fewer restrictions on what we can do. so we were allowed to drive and were allowed to drive and were allowed to drive and were allowed to use electricity and work . all of those things are work. all of those things are forbidden on other jewish holidays. so really it's a lot of the light stuff, a lot of the fun stuff. we also eat a lot of doughnuts . they're fried in oil. doughnuts. they're fried in oil. that's that we eat that's the tradition that we eat fried with these fried foods. we play with these things dreidels , the things called dreidels, the little spinning top. and you can gamble them depending on gamble with them depending on which is a bit a dice. it which is a bit like a dice. it kind of it's got jewish hebrew letters on it, which these days for nes, godot. hiya, shun means a great miracle, happens there, specifically jerusalem . oh and specifically jerusalem. oh and when the family together to light the candles that a nice moment of the evenings in hanukkah what do you do when you come together to light the candle? absolutely. will we say a blessing? the candles that god has commanded to these has commanded us to light these hanukkah candles. has commanded us to light these hanukkah candles . we also sing a hanukkah candles. we also sing a song called mouth your shorty, which is it's a bit like a
7:14 am
christmas carol for jews, if you want, where we praise the fact that god is the strength behind jews and that has several verses and people run out after the first usually. so that's also very nice . there's a lot of lot very nice. there's a lot of lot of games and, songs if you want to play with the kids and stuff in these days people also give presents guess because there's a bit of a rub off from christmas on the on the jewish people. yeah can i what the present yeah well can i what the present situation yeah i think situation is like. yeah i think there's a lot less pressure on us really . well i say that, but us really. well i say that, but i have to you don't find i don't have to you don't find yourself wandering around a prime market midnight or something like amazon prime. that's what amazon prime. well with the songs, the strikes. yeah. yeah well so now in seriousness, hanukkah is a light festival. very nice. do get together every day in their families. sometimes you have a lot of hanukkah work parties if you work with a lot of jewish people. i was in downing street at rishi sunak, a party. the other which was very night and. it's the prime it's nice that the prime minister we have a hindu minister and i, we have a hindu prime holding jewish
7:15 am
prime minister holding a jewish festival celebration with a giant christmas in giant christmas tree out in downing street. he and the downing street. as he and the chief commented. that's chief rabbi commented. that's that's a really nice symbol, i think, of of the think, of some of the multicultural does work in multicultural that does work in the . absolutely. i the uk. absolutely. jonathan, i wanted you about you wanted to ask you about you know, it's really interesting that are talking about the start of and about standing of hanukkah and about standing up for traditions up for faith for your traditions feel culture. and i wanted to ask about something that happened two ago, which is happened two days ago, which is a jewish youngsters a group of jewish youngsters were the victims of an anti semitic attack on an oxford street and they've actually returned to the scene, haven't they, to bring light into the darkness you say, it's almost darkness as you say, it's almost putting into hanukkah putting into action. hanukkah it. right. very nice it. that's right. it's very nice that they were able to go back there it was organised by who are jewish organisation and are a jewish organisation and they those kids there last they took those kids there last year oxford street just year to oxford street just dancing they were out dancing tied a bus they were out in street dancing and they in the street dancing and they actually a actually got assaulted by a group of who threw things group of guys who threw things at anti—semitic at them, shouted anti—semitic abuse. of abuse. the shocking thing, of course, the police have course, is that the police have stopped those suspects stopped for those suspects despite being of cctv despite there being of cctv footage them. think footage of them. you think people attacked jewish children
7:16 am
on oxford in this area would be easy enough to find, but they haven't done that anyway . light haven't done that anyway. light of they went to of that, they went back to celebrate this. you know incidents they to show incidents and they got to show that overcomes darkness. that light overcomes darkness. oh well, thank you very much. take time come we take the time to come and we bnng take the time to come and we bring some light. take the time to come and we bring some light . you as well, bring some light. you as well, because i know you . thank you because i know you. thank you very, very much . and hanukkah. very, very much. and hanukkah. and happy hanukkah, of course . and happy hanukkah, of course. yes, yes, yes, yes. right. okay, we've more here, but we've got more spring here, but we've got more spring here, but we are starting with with the latest headlines for you. so we're going to go to liverpool now. so i move the investigation is underway. a woman was shot dead. a village pub merseyside. three men were also taken to hospital with gunshot wounds after the incident , the after the incident, the lighthouse in wallasey on the world just before midnight. the woman, unfortunately, was pronounced dead . at least 28 pronounced dead. at least 28 people have died in the us as the country grapples with a brutal winter storm. blizzard conditions left almost half a million homes and businesses without power . more than 3000

wavelengths. today we misread our notes yesterday . but where our notes yesterday. but where did christmas begin? and why do we watch pantomimes every year? why do we have the traditions that we do? well, we're joined now by historian and licenced lay minister for the church england, martin whitlock. he's going to talk us through where our christmas traditions come from. well, good to you. merry christmas , you for joining us. christmas, you for joining us. good morning. and a very happy christmas . you, too. i notice christmas. you, too. i notice i'm also wearing my wrapping paper as well. code yes. someone's made effort. well, excuse me. this is festive, right ? it is relatively festive. right? it is relatively festive. it's a paisley. paisley tie , it's a paisley. paisley tie, martin. it's also not mine. to be fair identified in the changerooms earlier, but that go right. okay. so well, i mean, i was going to ask, where did start? but i think i know it's not a stupid question. tells me and yet we're not entirely although there obviously is there's a clue in the name but basically although christmas is
7:20 am
really important for christians i'm a christian and for christians this is a point at which we believe god's son into the world in order to bring the back to god. so we have forgiveness. so this is absolutely crucial. this is a birth of jesus. absolutely crucial. this is a birth of jesus . but what's birth of jesus. but what's interesting is in new testament, we don't actually know time of the year it took place . it's the year it took place. it's just not mentioned. and so for about 400 years, the didn't celebrate it as a specific time. but in the fourth century, about time when the church was becoming more popular, the roman empire and the government was becoming much more sensitive and reactive to christianity. and in fact, the first christian emperor had come to it was decided that something needs to be done about this and this particular time of the year was chosen because it's a particularly dark time of the yeah particularly dark time of the year. it's a time of the year when there were very often festivals and festivals of light and celebration to kind of pick people's spirits up, as it were. and one of them was called the saturnalia in rome. and there were of the celebrations in
7:21 am
were lots of the celebrations in communities europe. communities in northern europe. and the 25th of december was and so the 25th of december was chosen celebrate the birth of chosen to celebrate the birth of jesus. we don't actually know when he was born . and certainly when he was born. and certainly there's was on there's no evidence it was on there's no evidence it was on the 25th of december, but it soon took from there. we know that by the time in this country of alfred the great in, the ninth century, you couldn't be made work if you were a made to work in if you were a slave. days after slave. in the 12 days after christmas and. interestingly enough, the very first mention of christmas by that name is in 1038. that's pretty late . but we 1038. that's pretty late. but we know that christians across northern europe and certainly in this country have been celebrating it for centuries. only in this country tend to tend to record it . only in this country tend to tend to record it. middle winter, midwinter but the first use of the word christmas 1038 was definitely there. but it's also attracted to a lot of a lot of other traditions as well, because clearly people were already celebrating at this time of the year what the church did. was it christianised those ? and was it christianised those? and so throughout the middle ages, we lots of things appearing we see lots of things appearing that we'll now understand as
7:22 am
christmas traditions. so example the franciscans in the 13th century gave the tivity century they gave us the tivity and scene . we hear and the nativity scene. we hear about people singing carols, for example , although it should be example, although it should be remembered a carol is a song that accompanies a dance . it's that accompanies a dance. it's not necessarily about christmas , but those appear in the middle ages as well. we have churches being decorated with boughs of greenery to pick people's spirits a time , dark time spirits up at a time, dark time . not everybody approves of this in the 17th century, christmas is banned . so between 1645 and is banned. so between 1645 and 1660, the puritan government banned christmas. they say there are too traditions associated with it. the biblical it fights its way back and then it gets hit again. the industrial revolution. so in 1833, there's a factory act and it says that the only two days that workers can get off work are christmas day and good friday. that really hammers the days of christmas. no more feasting and celebrating for 12 days. but the 1840s, it fights back . albert victoria
7:23 am
fights back. albert victoria have pictures of themselves by tree. bit of a new innovation . tree. bit of a new innovation. that's a good idea . dickens that's a good idea. dickens publishes a christmas carol and says, isn't it time that we actually make christmas a time of giving made it much more central again and not of our traditions come in at that point. carol singing as we now know it, christmas cards as we now know it. santa claus comes across from the dutch inhabitants of new york. we call him father in his red and white. so a lot of the traditions you associate with christmas appear in the mid—19th , but it's going in the mid—19th, but it's going back. if you like to mediaeval traditions that had gone into decline in the and 18th century. oh martin absolutely fascinating that we've just whizzed through christmas wisdom story christmas. well done . amazing. christmas. well done. amazing. thank you so much, martin and let us know, what's your favourite christmas song? we're asking everyone today . martin asking everyone today. martin

7:25 am
collected in the 1860s 1870s. it's become associated with a christmas song, particularly so now a carol is singing . so when now a carol is singing. so when i was at midnight communion last night and i was singing our little town of bethlehem, you'll be to know that i be relieved to know that i was not dancing aisles. it not dancing in the aisles. it wouldn't problem if i wouldn't be problem if i was, but wasn't. you got but i wasn't. when you got yourself of that one, yourself out of that one, martin, cooking is martin, who's cooking today? is that you? it's a joint enterprise, i have to say. last evening. it was me cooking, just getting spuds doing getting the spuds ready, doing the parsnips and doing the brussels , which i do. i do enjoy brussels, which i do. i do enjoy brussels, which i do. i do enjoy brussel . and planning out. but brussel. and planning out. but my wife and i would do it as a joint enterprise today. but at 1030 we will be at church where i'm leading a service celebrating the birth of jesus. then it's home and then it's into that turkey and into that roast and then we get roast potatoes. and then we get to celebrate anybody else ? to celebrate anybody else? ultimate sounds wonderful. have a very christmas and thank a very merry christmas and thank you joining us morning. you for joining us this morning. my pleasure . happy christmas, my pleasure. happy christmas, that one. happy christmas . yeah, that one. happy christmas. yeah, it's fantastic because i've i've don't ever seen anyone don't think ever seen anyone that passionate christmas

7:32 am
told us. the best christmas food for you , probably potatoes . how for you, probably potatoes. how do you do your potatoes ? mashed. do you do your potatoes? mashed. definitely mashed . using mince definitely mashed. using mince pies. christmas food is are my favourite anything christmas i think of you know like much salt has in the pudding for christmas pudding yeah probably i do not like christmas pudding so i won't be out with the. oh they do. these little sausages in bacon. i think it's an english thing because we don't do it in australia. so yeah, probably that. and what are you guys going do on christmas day. make your seat , going do on christmas day. make your seat, eat. like is an australian trying to explain a pig australian trying to explain a pig in a australian trying to explain a pig in a piggy australian trying to explain a pig in a piggy blanket exactly yeahi pig in a piggy blanket exactly yeah i love i love that. anyway, since we've been talking about christmas food i aidan magee aidan magee is where does the housewives favour hanging around again? he's not going home. i
7:33 am
spent all evening here and yeah, we go and so i eat. and what we got for us today, well, christmas was a pleasant so i just come out of the football to be honest people. i think we need to discuss that yeah yeah he what . so it's the first he does what. so it's the first time i've really lost. i jumped time i've really lost. ijumped me i yelled at you while we go ahead so he's quite right. so you know, queens park. queens park rangers, glasgow rangers. i want for my pr toby and toby you know who's this poor so meant to be young . you mentioned it on tv be young. you mentioned it on tv the other day. yeah. only because someone runs this for, i don't know, just because i did anything were action tomorrow we in action as far away to cardiff. i'll get to that in a minute. no, it's awesome. so i'm sensing that we're about your christmas jumper anyway, about once a year, i'm like that. but obviously i. what would obviously i. what else would you have i mean, yeah have so to. no, i mean, yeah exactly do you wear this every christmas days? yes, i do. i do. ihave christmas days? yes, i do. i do. i have it on other channels as well. mean, this isn't a. well. i mean, this isn't a. yeah, isn't this is
7:34 am
yeah, sorry, this isn't this is a exclusive for. news. i'm a tv exclusive for. gb news. i'm licenced. maybe if it gets too hot in the house. i find that you and wear you need to take off and wear something you know, maybe just i've worn i put in for later i've worn i put it in for later on this got weird on actually this got weird what's going on the court right. lionel lionel messi lionel messi. lionel messi listen, the story listen, the story. the story end with lionel messi. we saw that story world and story with world cup and everything he achieved coming beating probably serious now come, go hard get a great come, let's go hard get a great world you know it. like world cup as you know it. like he's staying at psg in france. he's his contracts expires due to expire at the end of june this summer he's going to sign a contract for an extra year with the option of another year after that. so could him up to that. so could take him up to the age of 37. i fancy that the age of 37. now i fancy that paris saint—germain are probably that during world that actually during the world cup proved he's still cup he's proved that he's still a winning top level a trophy winning top level performer him their side performer with him their side definitely more likely to go and win league now it win the champions league now it gives the opportunity gives him the opportunity do that you at cristiano that you look at cristiano ronaldo yeah own good ronaldo his next yeah own good money to get money but he's not going to get a to add to his a chance to add to his collection of medals in terms of champions league and he regrets everything. was everything. i mean obviously was
7:35 am
actually manchester everything. i mean obviously was actuall'in manchester everything. i mean obviously was actuall'in that manchester everything. i mean obviously was actuall'in that interviewester everything. i mean obviously was actuall'in that interview with he united in that interview with he should not be named and then all of sudden he's going saudi of a sudden he's going to saudi arabia. it's not really arabia. i mean it's not really the they and he will the move they want and he will have offered surely would have been offered surely would have been offered surely would have been offered to every single champions league club, including northern france he didn't look, didn't fancy and think, look, you cristiano ronaldo you can buy cristiano ronaldo in your in the your club at your peril in the sense yes, he still sense that, yes, he still delivers a high level performance. but you probably going adapt the way going to have to adapt the way your you're also inviting your team you're also inviting now he's he's so famous now a circus he's he's so famous he's got twitter followers than on instagram photos and the pope, you know really yeah. yeah he has that indictment of where we are as a world. well, i think to be fair to the pope and i'll ask. fair. the pope. yeah. ask. be fair. the pope. yeah. you catch the eye. i you always catch the eye. i think he's he you know, he probably attracts a more an older oh, yes. older viewer. oh, yeah. yes. it's not not necessarily it's not he's not necessarily hating with social media, hating with with social media, whereas nowadays followers probably know, probably are. so, you know, i don't think it's necessarily a very popular comment on the popularity. terms of popularity. however in terms of message to message like getting back to that, take up to 37 that that, i could take up to 37 that give the there's probably give that the there's probably been the couple of been twice the last couple of years when they really
7:36 am
years since he when they really want i don't think want to go there i don't think because he passed on because because he passed on it because their financial has their financial situation has and then they've not come and then go they've not come back for him the because back in for him by the because i was told that reporter the was told that one reporter the new director of football would bnng new director of football would bring back to barcelona. bring him back to barcelona. they've actually so they've actually come in. so he's another one again he's another one who again message, lesser degree, you message, to a lesser degree, you by circumstance by that circumstance your club because yes he's because it's just so yes he's he's he's not the kind of he's not he's not the kind of guy chases individual in the guy who chases individual in the way ronaldo but way that ronaldo does. but there's speculate and there's still the speculate and still scrutiny. do you think still the scrutiny. do you think it finished now? debate it is finished now? they debate about of all time? about the greatest of all time? no. one of people no. see one of those people i explain to and diamond explain this to and diamond actually week, i don't actually last week, i don't believe in the greatest player of all but i believe such of all time, but i believe such a thing exists a team sport. a thing exists in a team sport. you the greatest you can be the greatest goalkeeper. may. goalkeeper. i think you may. what i mean is who's what i really mean is who's better, and that's mean. yeah better, and that's i mean. yeah let me say, you know, in fact always preferred watching. i thought when it was more thought when out it was more explosive more dynamic explosive player more dynamic but the beauty the but just for the beauty of the game thought i preferred game i thought i preferred watching i don't watching messi but i don't believe sport you can believe in a team sport you can believe in a team sport you can be greatest your generation be the greatest your generation of you play of greatest ever if you play tennis you're an individual tennis if you're an individual sport but i'm not sure you can
7:37 am
do the context do that within the context of a team. and i think because you can't you put messy out there on his own he'll get smashed under. no put out there on his no you put one out there on his own, crushed. you own, he gets crushed. no, you know, probably more know, probably even more thousand. he's fight thousand. they'll if he's fight for depends good for 90 minutes depends how good the opponents is confirmed the opponents are is confirmed that definitely his that that was definitely his last cup. no, not last world cup. no, not necessarily. i mean this. no, no, nobody anything. no, nobody said anything. i mean, it just unlikely at mean, but it just unlikely at the age of 39 that you played another world cup. i suppose what waiting to see what they're, waiting to see what they're, waiting to see what hunger like. i mean what his hunger was like. i mean yes. world cup was one thing yes. the world cup was one thing that needed to he's that he needed to achieve. he's done yeah. know, if done that. yeah. you know, if you've everything, won you've done everything, won everything, your hunger everything, how is your hunger after that he wants after that i think that he wants to the champions day with a to win the champions day with a different that's different club and that that's what he is. i'm what motivates him. he is. i'm sorry. your family as well psg they deal during the world they the deal during the world cup probably why cup which probably explains why all because it was all that began because it was whoever piper the whoever pays the piper calls the tune absolutely and the tune i guess. absolutely and the premier obviously as premier league obviously as well. sitting. it is well. also all sitting. it is easy isn't it, easy to forget, isn't it, because cup. yeah. because the world cup. yeah. kicks off, but honestly also i think points that they think that five points that they could eight points click on
7:38 am
could go eight points click on that. yeah right they got that. yeah that's right they got west to difficult game west ham to not difficult game it's derby 8:00 kick it's a local derby 8:00 kick off now they haven't now with arsenal they haven't won years and they do won it in 19 years and they do it this year it will be 19 years since they won the league under arsene. the invincibles, you remember was united. remember that was the united. they your adversaries for they were your adversaries for many, terms of many, many years in terms of their all their their mentality. all their opponents them, no opponents around them, no separate got separate or not. they still got a team. yes they're a young team. yes they're getting mentally, getting stronger mentally, psychologically fell psychologically but they fell away season when away badly last season when their them their rivals tottenham real them in that sort of half in in that last sort of half dozen the season. the dozen games of the season. the question is patrick can they do they believe can the they believe they can win the title they've lost a key player one their key players gabriel one of their key players gabriel has at the has easily got injured at the world playing for brazil. world cup playing for brazil. are going against are they going against the transfer replacement transfer and get a replacement for manchester for him? manchester city. they've in three they've eight games in three weeks soon but their weeks coming up soon but their squadis weeks coming up soon but their squad is so strong. maybe they will just gently reeled in really really arsenal as really really arsenal and as i say, their opponents them say, their opponents all them know they be still a know that they be still a question over their psychology also a break we've got also we got a break we've got a break in the season. what do see at the start of the season? every time we get new fixtures
7:39 am
coming we we see teams coming in, we see we see teams throw freak results. so, you know, arsenal are victim of know, arsenal are a victim of that last or 30 years. that in the last or 30 years. many, we could see many, many times we could see some results tomorrow some freak results tomorrow because there's been a there's been a break. it's doesn't necessarily that because west ham, lost five ham, for example, have lost five of games are going of the last six games are going to poorly some more nights to play poorly some more nights will no my to you is on will say no now my to you is on the christmas and yesterday the of christmas and yesterday we're about we're were talking about your festive said you festive menu. yeah you said you bnng festive menu. yeah you said you bring yeah. when i'm bring in tasters. yeah. when i'm ten. no, no, no. hang on. wait, wait, wait. listen got i've brought in some cocktails. i put in to make them in some cocktails to make them myself. was but it was myself. it was 9:00. but it was wasted me. no, not really. wasted on me. no, not really. i've got, i've got a virgin on view. i've got the virgin. it's called virgin magic. called the virgin virgin magic. magic okay. oh yeah. magic spell dash. okay. oh yeah. and got i've got and i've got the i've got the berries. i'll fill in berries. right, i'll fill you in on making it later. i put my apron in believe it or not, having own clothes just let having my own clothes just let me you start at home. me do fine. you start at home. why do you think? wait me when i put me out, discard all my mac. no. yo my boss said well, i made out and he's got nothing today we're full frontal need to see

7:46 am
because as you earlier, the because as you said earlier, the news day . so let's news doesn't no day. so let's have a look at some of the newspaper websites for you. well, mirrors is leading well, the mirrors is leading with royal festivities we with the royal festivities we can expect today with expectation of lavish celebrations behind closed doors, as it should be, by the way , are royalty. all, way, are royalty. after all, they're going have they're not going to have to live on the of the sun live life on the wall of the sun once again to the royals calling kate a princess during . the kate a princess during. the westminster abbey cow service . westminster abbey cow service. one would like to be called princess. we can not be here if desperate. i'm sure i can speak someone to make sure that that's in the strap of the bosom, patrick and perfect. because it will make that happen. yeah look at the world's worst children. okay? the daily is also running with the royals out . and last with the royals out. and last night was broadcast of the christmas carols service at westminster abbey. they say princess charlotte the star princess charlotte was the star show. it's almost the perfect princess different opinions that the independent are focusing on ukraine this christmas with the fight to save lives bloodiest
7:47 am
front story i picture developed an insatiable cough the last 30 seconds which is making for great tv and radio. but the time now though to, go through some of the other news as well. joining us this morning is laura. now sorry, i've got to ask this. i thought it last some did you what's coming now did you know what's coming now is futurist andrew ebel also is and futurist andrew ebel also the equally as exciting as well author ribena karl what's a futurist i thank you knew you were going to say that and that's what future in the future is we basically people will say history repeats itself and the reason history repeats itself is because we've never learned the lessons from history. so what we do, in history do, we at patterns in history and predict the future. and you know i've sat this very place know i've sat on this very place for the last i mean 18 months ever since last year we were here as well. and we but we predict things. so for example if you look at look my web if you look at my look my web page on octopus dot tv on the 19th of november, i predicted the world cup and all the
7:48 am
results and else and the shenanigans and all the incorrect argentina, the one i predicted about japan and about the other bits and pieces . but the other bits and pieces. but also what we do, we look at also politics and things like that because people never learning their mistakes. so rishi sunak for not learning from lady hussey about things that you should be speaking to people about. i also knew that patrick was going to be here, so i'm going to off for you. going to jump off for you. patrick oh, come on. this is good. see what i've got good. you see what i've got here? me i want to do here? let me go. i want to do christmas greetings. oh well, i'm going to tell you something. i'm going to tell you something. i aidan in the green room, i with aidan in the green room, the screen where he was sharing his that his cookies and said, is that a pistachio nuts ? let's see the pistachio nuts? let's see the sort of that's the sort of pistachio? not at all. but anyway, there's god. i hate anyway, there's a god. i hate christmas, don't know christmas, but don't know what i won't by because i actually love it. right. so we some news. it. right. so we do some news. you've sitting there very you've been sitting there very patiently all patiently while. we learn all about on in the about futurism. what's on in the news? yeah, i do have to news? well, yeah, i do have to just say the grinch has always reminded carey. i don't know what think it's a similar what it. i think it's a similar mood. i do . and i was
7:49 am
mood. yeah, i do. and i was looking at i thinking, oh, looking at i was thinking, oh, tim curry, let's have a look at the king's speech, shall we. so 3:00 today. i've had lots of you were saying going to be a really emotional one, but it's also significant it because it's the first time we're going to see the speech televised. the king's speech televised. yeah, . the king's yeah, absolutely. and the king's speech delivered speech is going to be delivered from george's and from st george's windsor. and it is the exact place where the world saw the queen's last coffin. that was the last time that they saw the queen's coffin . i don't think the king's going to sway away from the tradition of the queen's speech . i think of the queen's speech. i think we need to remember the queen also she wrote her own speeches and it was also from the help her husband, prince . and i her husband, prince. and i wonder whether or not he would have that kind of connection with the queen consort, camilla , whether or not he would go to her in writing his speech, would it be would it be reflective? i think it will be, because in this time, the cost of living

the ukraine, all the things that are happening, think it would be very solemn and reflective andrew, how do you feel about the idea that the king is going to have a lavish coronation ? i to have a lavish coronation? i mean, a lot of people say, oh, he should be he should reflect he should be he should reflect he should be he should reflect he should reflect the living crisis. i think no screw that. you're the king stuck, the gold hand. that's exactly what they say about stool. those exact words and i think you're right. look at the pomp and ceremony which we do better than any other country in the world. and if you look at the audience figures for the queen's wonderful celebration for her jubilee and what happened there and the way that we also we commemorated with her passing, the way that we do that it's absolutely the royal family of one of our biggest tourist. absolutely the royal family of one of our biggest tourist . so one of our biggest tourist. so you're right. you don't want a budget coronation . we want budget coronation. we want somebody that unites country. we need to celebrate the good and knowing about some positive stories at the moment the world is dominated by negative stories
7:51 am
, war and famine and pestilence and all that sort of stuff. we need to have some positive stuff. i think looking forward to the coronation is something we can all do and it's interesting. it coincides a certain birthday as well over one of harry's children. and it's interesting they picked that date very . very that date very. very interesting. andrew, let's interesting. and andrew, let's have at the centre track. have a look at the centre track. oh i love it. and gb news they've got their own little santa tracker i believe. don't know if you've got a video of it but what say is a bit late as you see i try to work on time things around the world. this is what petra is going to give me for christmas you've got to give me virus. thank you covid. me a virus. thank you covid. christmas it's to christmas patrick, it's got to be knows santa. look be a guy who knows santa. look at oh, can we at it. go see now. oh, can we see where he is. well, i think he's just over bognor regis. i i recognised just. isn't that blake ? i think he's in the west blake? i think he's in the west of the us las vegas is. it's out there. i think something's the vegas i never seen him a catholic i guess i love it but
7:52 am
so is has been spending a long time over vegas would appear that he doesn't say yes that's something you're running a bit late he's i'm trying to work out the time because we're on christmas eve we're already. well what what's the time now. 751 yeah, i'll tell you what, it's still last night, so it would be america. so anywhere, hours behind us would be good. so california , he'll be there, i so california, he'll be there, i reckon the californians will be looking forward to that raisins and better weather. i hope santa is going to bring them. yeah well, yes, that's true, actually. i mean, we're about strikes not being to get strikes not being able to get anywhere, but at least we're not deaung anywhere, but at least we're not dealing with that. well, you talked about grinch stole talked about the grinch stole christmas. the lynch christmas. it's been the lynch that christmas year, that stole christmas this year, hasn't about hasn't they? talking about strikes. oh i'm not looking forward my fight. well, i am forward to my fight. well, i am looking forward it because it looking forward to it because it means i got to go home. of course, either way, that's a four drive. you know, four hour drive. so, you know, there rush today. yeah there that rush today. yeah after then you're after this. and then you're coming and no going to come back tomorrow . okay. yeah, that's tomorrow. okay. yeah, that's a lot of driving for you. it is
7:53 am
not busy. busy, busy. you news you go . i do have to say on the you go. i do have to say on the santa that 92% of children aged eight and younger believe . and eight and younger believe. and sometimes i think that a they showed 100% as something wonderful children to have that belief even amongst all of the gloom and it's they because it's magic it truly is let's have a look at a huge loss in the music world should we ribena this in the telegraph from the telegraph websites their only newspapers today is maxi jazz died at the age of 65. yeah maxi jazz, a dj born brixton. he died. and it's i didn't know this, but he was a buddhist as well. so it is a major loss, but another major loss was the specials. terry yeah . passed away so it's yeah. passed away so it's important to all of these people and the and to remember them in, as andrew said, in a positive light and i'm sure there'll be a lot of singing and i'm sure
7:54 am
there'll be a lot of dancing. we just need a deejay. so maybe. oh, gosh, it's i it's not it's no no. age is at 65. yeah. young very young. yeah. such a loss. andrew, let's have look at this on the bbc website. yes, it's a little bit different , but it's little bit different, but it's about why it's a great story and they know the difference between a buffalo and a bison. well can you can't wash your hands in a buffalo i thank you but what bison all superb that's a european bison herd has been joined a bull can you believe it wilds of blaine woods and the bulls can introduce to the herd and near canterbury kent and they're three female bison which are once indigenous in but they've been extinct for of years they were introduced in july. now one of them came over from ireland and found out she was pregnant. that's what happens. you go party at sea. she came along, but happens. you go party at sea. she came along , but they now she came along, but they now introduced the bull and it's been a bit delayed. the bull. so it's to come over in it's supposed to come over in august couldn't fill the august but couldn't fill in the paperwork didn't the
7:55 am
paperwork or didn't pass the test. that's brexit for you. test. that's why brexit for you. but has joined herd and but he has joined this herd and they're hoping for great things now the great thing about bison is that really good the is that really good for the environment, what environment, because what happens they graze on non happens is they graze on non nafive happens is they graze on non native conifers. you didn't know this did you. non—native conifers and basically it helps the environment. it basically creates parts other animals creates parts for other animals use. what i love about bison as well is 283 days gestation penod well is 283 days gestation period nine months and what they do they're born standing up which is brilliant and within a few they can run around and gamble in las vegas with santa and well, that's the basis . so and well, that's the basis. so this is a great positive story for bison and returned to this countryside of bison. in fact it was good you got them in. yeah. bisons are known as ecosystem engineers . they are. that's engineers. they are. that's exactly what they are. yes who knew? we knew. they started a lot . they get injured. if you're lot. they get injured. if you're going to get on the nhs. okay. plenty more to come on on christmas day show everybody
7:56 am

7:57 am

8:02 am
because television has made it possible for many of you to see me in your homes on christmas day , my own family often gather day, my own family often gather round to watch television as they are at this moment. round to watch television as they are at this moment . and they are at this moment. and thatis they are at this moment. and that is how i imagine you now. i very much hope that this new medium will make my christmas message more personal and direct . i message more personal and direct .i hope message more personal and direct . i hope the 1958 may bring you god's blessing and all the things you for. long and so i wish you all young and old, wherever you may be, all the fun and enjoyment and the peace of a very oh, bless. i just got cut off there. but it was it very emotional. see her like that as well. is indeed. yes, absolutely. yes. the kind of the first was this christmas, the queen isn't it? but it'll be
8:03 am
interesting to see what king charles has say. about 3 pm. charles has to say. about 3 pm. in fact, not 3 pm, 3 pm, in fact, not about 3 pm, 3 pm, as you as were told as you as you were told yesterday, as i told, one yesterday, as i was told, no one says and serves as is it says and serves as is when it is. because apparently when a well, we have to be at the empire party, that was when most people the globe were people around the globe were able in exactly one able to see it in exactly one thing every day, every day is the school day, isn't it? every queen's yesterday well appropriate to say that joined in the studio now by suzanne brown joins now . what do brown who joins us now. what do you of listening to the you make of listening to the queen there and watching her is really quite emotional, isn't it? yeah, it is emotional. and i actually thinking back over the many last year did this show, we did it by zoom because i think because it was still covid still raging. remember i will raging. and i remember i will read you will read and obviously the queen will read. so actually looking back now at that, i just can't even believe how quickly the is since we did this the is gone since we did this last i know. can't believe it. last i know. i can't believe it. and it's going to such and it's going to be such a loss, isn't it? is it something that you would do? tune in at 3
8:04 am
pm. and yeah, i mean, we've always done that every christmas at 3 pm. and i'll be doing it again p.m. at 3 pm. and i'll be doing it again pm. just to again at 3 pm. today just to see what the king's going to say. yes, i think we thought maybe minutes king, 10 maybe 10 minutes of the king, 10 minutes. was minutes. yeah. it was interesting that it was interesting as well that it was recorded the final three recorded before the final three episodes of the americans. netflix docu drama. don't netflix docu drama. yeah, don't get me started on that. get me started . come on. you saw it on started. come on. you saw it on sunday because there's a there's a little selfridges back there. oh, yes. i didn't have to bring me a present. this is actually for la. i've been in this business for 25 years. i know how hard working in the media is. it's not all this glamorous in front of the camera. you work hard so i this is for you. hard so i got this is for you. nothing you want to see . i'll nothing you want to see. i'll happy christmas. i will be bringing you some wine. oh i know. i'm huge . i know what it's know. i'm huge. i know what it's like. it's hardcore and it's been a tough year for so many people , really. i'm not saying people, really. i'm not saying i'm one of the worst at all, but it's messing up a little
8:05 am
present. well, i'm not your bbc journalist as well. so this is saying , hang on journalist as well. so this is saying, hang on a minute. we just we can share if you like. it's pure himalayan salt, mushroom face massage . well, i mushroom face massage. well, i actually asked for that. you asked for it. and, you know , you asked for it. and, you know, you guys, thank you so much. she's on thank you so on us presence. thank you so much. i should say when i straight think. oh, yeah. so i've been interviewing people all year and it's been a sort of all year and it's been a sort of a rollercoaster of interviews and stories. and you've been busy, haven't you've been really busy. so what do you have from the for us the world of showbiz for us today? so i think the one thing that stands out for me is beth mead because i think having one mead, because i think having one sports personality of the year, i just think she's fantastic and i'm the celebrity at home. women's fitness is one of my jobs. and we did a bake female sports feature . and then with sports feature. and then with beth winning , i just think it's beth winning, i just think it's like brilliant. i think it's like, gets women's sports at the forefront . she was the first forefront. she was the first female footballer to win and i just think it's fantastic it for grassroots football and yeah ,
8:06 am
grassroots football and yeah, it's brilliant and for women's sports as well. it has been a great year for that, hasn't it? and let's talk about harry and meghan, shall we, because we're going straight to by the presents. yeah both of them on netflix. the thing with me is i'm i probably go against a lot of your viewers. i am very against people that slate them . against people that slate them. i hate of that. i find the i hate all of that. i find the twisted trolls. find the twisted trolls. i find the people attack i don't people that attack them. i don't like it. so i thought it was a fantastic docu series . oh, no, i fantastic docu series. oh, no, i know. it's christmas, but i'll let you get away . they call it let you get away. they call it what was going on. so i'm also going to arguing about this. i'm saying about what i think. i don't argue . i'm afraid so. i do don't argue. i'm afraid so. i do present. i don't know. sorry i enjoyed this. i enjoyed the show, i think with jeremy clarkson , a nasty comment clarkson, a nasty comment afterwards . i think it's sports afterwards. i think it's sports maybe even into more positive way for them. sorry if you if you're not a fan . i'm sorry. i'm you're not a fan. i'm sorry. i'm not. i was in it, though. i was in it. i was in the home. i was
8:07 am
going about it. i was going to buy this. yeah. and i mean, i'm not a royalist. i my father worked for the medical team that looked after lady diana's. so when you know, i was brought when she you know, i was brought up following her story. up sort of following her story. so she died in tragic so when she died in tragic circumstances, i was, you know, always follow what went on in the family and sorry to the royal family and sorry to say, i like what's going say, i didn't like what's going on meghan and harry in. on with meghan and harry in. i was one of the people that felt sorry for them. so we want to move on because i'm probably driving you insane, but right now i everyone's perfectly entitled to that views. absolutely. i do thinks that that's really good that's that's a really good thing about, you know, being a british mean, british person as well. i mean, so people love diana and so many people love diana and you've got a soft spot for harry through think of through diana. i think a lot of people definitely feel that. yeah also think i don't yeah and i also think i don't like people attacking people. i mean it. mean, maybe that's mean it. i mean, maybe that's because my lifestyle because i'm my lifestyle and that's it. well, i am that's not a call it. well, i am a columnist, not someone a columnist, but i'm not someone that to rip people apart that likes to rip people apart because just don't because i think i just don't like that. so the minute people do that to people, i almost feel like i stand not stand up.
8:08 am
like i stand up, not stand up. but a journalist with but maybe as a journalist with the platform, like any the platform, i don't like any of bashing. are you pleased of that bashing. are you pleased that they've that that that that they've had that that that time have their say? yes, time to have their say? yes, that's about, that's what it was all about, wasn't they just wanted to wasn't it. they just wanted to have truth tell their have their truth and tell their story. and obviously story. yeah. and obviously netflix great job with it. netflix did a great job with it. so, you know, when you've got netflix behind however netflix behind you and however much were paid. so much money they were paid. so yeah, was produced absolutely yeah, it was produced absolutely beautifully. it really was . and beautifully. it really was. and we're going to talk about love island now. yeah, love island now. yeah, that's love island. i going to. yeah. island. i was going to. yeah. okay. i, i, i'm not a fan of okay. so i, i, i'm not a fan of love island's. i always was this show. i wasn't such a big fan, but i've got three kids, so i watched it with them. i was one of the people that was the first to go away with david day and the winner on he was he came out in the villa, then he got a contract with bates. so i went away on the boots. question oh wow. so they sent me up. so right where was that? that was not it that was not far. it wasn't that she was in bristol. was a lovely in bristol. it was a lovely hotel, i suppose a bit sat me next david day tried next to david day and i tried really hard make conversation
8:09 am
really hard to make conversation with so, i mean, we had with him. so, i mean, we had a complete laugh because we both got drunk. it was slight got drunk. it was a slight there's a slight language barrier. and i think in barrier. i think. and i think in a where there's like a in a room where there's like loads of journalists this, loads of journalists like this, but nice . and then i went but it was nice. and then i went and then did an interview with and then i did an interview with them at cannes. so who i thought was absolutely divine, really was absolutely divine, a really lovely person . she was, you know lovely person. she was, you know , again, people slate them and people are horrible about them. but thought as but i thought individually as people, divine. i think people, she was divine. i think he's incredibly brave to go anything like that. yeah. with you. i mean, because you're also at the mercy any editing that at the mercy of any editing that may place you're aware may take place. you're not aware of time because you of it at the time because you you're literally in a villa or in or whatever you are. in a camp or whatever you are. yeah. and as well you know, like whether or not you think you're ready it, you might not be ready for it, you might not be ready for it, you might not be ready for it, you might not be ready for the fame that ready for the, the fame that comes afterwards. i've a comes afterwards. and i've got a huge respect people huge amount respect for people who maximiser rylan who absolutely maximiser rylan clark it since clark i think is it just since media yes but he's he's media ireland. yes but he's he's he's the definition of a bloke who's who's made the absolute most of what he's got. right. because he was on x factor
8:10 am
originally i think wasn't it. yeah. and then when i worked at this news desk he this morning on the news desk he was yeah. and was there. yeah. and then i interviewed him a couple of days ago because he's going to do the celebrity interviews ideal celebrity interviews for ideal home. are back home. so islands are back page style all style because he's all entitlement yeah, entitlement areas. yeah, exactly. to if i can. exactly. and i have to if i can. can i talk about bio babe? yes. because she has been i think for me , the one outstanding story of me, the one outstanding story of the year because b&b was always the year because b&b was always the nicest person i ever interviewed. everything she did to raise money for bowel cancer charities was incredible. and i know christmas was a really she loved christmas. she was all about the sparkles and everything. so yeah . and that's everything. so yeah. and that's oh, we've got . yes so every time oh, we've got. yes so every time i interviewed deborah, she was devi . and even when she'd come devi. and even when she'd come out of chemo and would me and would drink and she was even looking at her now upsets me because christmas was all about deborah and she was just a beautiful saw, wasn't she? i think she's one of the people that really capture the nation. yeah. she captured nation,
8:11 am
yeah. she captured the nation, you her last day, you know, even her last day, she was, know, brighter , was, you know, brighter, cheerful. and you know, she cheerful. and she, you know, she let us to her and her let us chat to her and her husband, sebastian, i think is know be a rock and to and the know to be a rock and to and the her the divine to a really her kids the divine to a really special family. and i know it's going to be hard for them at christmas vertebrates have christmas vertebrates have christmas year. christmas without her this year. but thank you so much, suzanne. coming us through the coming in, taking us through the showbiz reflecting showbiz world and reflecting on nothing happy with nothing 2022. really happy with us . nothing 2022. really happy with us. christmas, are sending us. christmas, are we sending you wine or president. us. christmas, are we sending you wine or president . oh, all you wine or president. oh, all right. well let's bring you up to date, shall we? and yes, so this , of course, because this, of course, because a manhunt is underway on murder is on after a woman was shot dead at a village pub in wallasey. three men were also taken to hospital with gunshot williams after incident at the after the incident at the lighthouse wirral lighthouse eight on the wirral just the woman just before midnight, the woman was pronounced dead at was later pronounced dead at least 28 people have died in the us as the country grapples with a brutal winter storm. blizzard conditions have left almost half a million homes and businesses

8:16 am
seriously get about and amongst the identify where the the community identify where the problems are and do something about it. when i say do something about it, i mean actually prioritise and actually prioritise veterans and prioritise not just the housing, but the health, the welfare, the mental health, the whole thing. and you know, i would hope that, you know, the team, the government, armed forces government, the armed forces themselves and the veteran community, there's enough people there can actually grip this there who can actually grip this situation and get it turned around, sort it out as a matter of priority . yeah, indeed. in of priority. yeah, indeed. in and sometimes , phil, i just and sometimes, phil, i just can't i can't help but feel that we've got our priorities a bit skew in this country and you know we see people who serve queen and now king and country maybe limbs. you've got maybe lost limbs. you've got mental health issues potentially, as well the potentially, as well as the physical issues top of all of physical issues on top of all of that. and they just don't seem to be treated particularly well. felt you know, if felt and i think, you know, if veterans veterans i think a forgotten area of our society only i don't think this is much forgotten. i think some drift away and they drift away because
8:17 am
they're allowed to drift. like i would like to see a voluntary probation system within the army whereby when people leave, they feel they've got a handrail for turn . okay, not just party is turn. okay, not just party is not just not just 5 minutes, but actually if they have a wobble in their life, they can put their hand out and the system that they helped support will then that you then support them. that if you as prisoner and you're 25 as a prisoner and you're 25 years in or you'd have a probation system that would keep an eye on for the rest of an eye on you for the rest of your life. now, i'm saying your life. now, i'm not saying that would have use that that you would have to use that if if you were a veteran if you are if you were a veteran and that wasn't something that was forced on you, but it's just something safety net. something nice is a safety net. now, you're in, you a now, when you're in, you have a site have this thing site that you have this thing underneath yeah the underneath you. yeah the government, everybody's behind you. day you leave, you. but the day you leave, you've no you've got nothing. there's no safety that's what safety net. and that's what blokes women, they sort of blokes and women, they sort of drift scene and if drift away from the scene and if they don't themselves they don't keep themselves abreast going abreast of what's going on, very, easily, lost. and very, very easily, get lost. and when thing ends, dig in. and when the thing ends, dig in. and when the thing ends, dig in. and when the thing ends, dig in. and when the drains knock on the doon when the drains knock on the door. some these people door. and some of these people live horrendous stuff, live with horrendous stuff, that's the meeting
8:18 am
that's when you lose the meeting for i'd just like to say for. so i'd just like to say something put in place. i'm willing talk to them willing to talk to them or develop that. will they talk to the very top brass and put some ideas across that can actually sort this problem out and put it to bed for good and christmas itself is particularly hard, isn't it, for veterans , isn't it, for veterans, especially those who have returned from deployment. they're all, in fact, still soldiers who are stationed abroad. there are some in estonia, i believe, where she that was meeting them just a few days ago. but for those who are at home for christmas , how at home for christmas, how difficult is this time of year to readjust to civilian life after, like you say, they've seen just the worst things imaginable ? any any any imaginable? any any any situation that provokes emotion . christmas in particular provokes emotion. it's a very strong emotional time of year. and that that can wipe the demons up in some people . okay. demons up in some people. okay. because it is opening up all their initial feelings and emotions. and it can be an extremely difficult time. and that's when people need the most
8:19 am
support. what's your message to veterans this christmas ? i love veterans this christmas? i love you all. thank you. every so much. and those outside , thank much. and those outside, thank you for your service. but if you are suffering, let somebody know. that's just the way it's in the system. check in on a buddy. tap in on someone you know , tell anyone. yeah. so some know, tell anyone. yeah. so some people don't know why it can. you can cure the soup is on the pub. all right, get in touch. talk to people, be positive. try and find something that blows you back on the last . the you back on the last. the recovery is your only one decision. a life getting back on that and that decision that ladder. and that decision is with you. so just something a little different. now, little bit different. now, archie, you get archie, before we let you get going, is throughout the course of , we've playing of this show, we've been playing clips of various different challenges done. when challenges that i've done. when i show confronting face i used to show confronting face and i felt it was a rather interesting incident that you and i had actually filmed . for and i had actually filmed. for those of you who don't know, phil decided that he was very kindly going to help us do a challenge, which was for me to
8:20 am
basically get kidnapped by the sas, which was terrifying. the only was phil, wasn't only problem was phil, wasn't it, that were it in it, is that we were doing it in some marshland , cold chest some marshland, in cold chest down. the police down. someone called the police because thought that you because they thought that you were kidnapping and the were kidnapping me and the police arrived as i was shooting a gun into a field dressed in full military gear. and, phil, i mean, that was a good day out of them. that was a great day. i know you not dead in 25 years, right now. is it a travesty? sadly. well happy christmas, val. good luck to you . and val. good luck to you. and wendy's all rise. well, take care and thank you both. you marks top marks for effort as well. phil yeah , i'll get to well. phil yeah, i'll get to that to that later . like, oh, that to that later. like, oh, what a guy. i'm even jealous, actually, to be fair over you in actually, to be fair over you in a few hours. don't worry, baby. maybe we'll have to wait and see. oh, it's so true. what are you saying, though? i think that's going to really resonate with people at home. with so many people at home. just with just completely agree with with so that. and lots of so much of that. and lots of you've in touch. them you've been in touch. keep them coming in. it's keeping us
8:21 am
companies and it we're talking about things. we're about lots of things. we're talking about trees, talking about pets, trees, dinners. of stuff. dinners. yeah, loads of stuff. and fantastic array of dogs and a fantastic array of dogs and sent in us and pets have been sent in to us as well. so. well and everybody sending and we're going to sending those and we're going to get some of them on the screen very, very shortly. have very, very shortly. we have a team of people out there team full of people out there who beavering to make who are beavering away to make sure get your pictures sure that we get your pictures out tv and there's out there on the tv and there's a of lovely for what you're a lot of lovely for what you're wearing. oh really? yes. and i'll just say. right. so yesterday and ali will dispute recollections may vary anyway dispute is we did have a chat yesterday about what we were going to wear on tv today and i made the point after the professional look at me that if some big, serious news breaks so i can't be wearing a christmas jim. so that's what this morning it was busy night. okay either way, though, you showed up as a rather fashionable bauble. well, so my version of events was we sat here yesterday and i said, what are you going to watch for? and you said, festive. no. so i took this as festive. you took
8:22 am
pinching on next. i think this belongs to mark longhurst. no, that's a tom harwood tie. tom harwood . yep. go. funky tie. harwood. yep. go. funky tie. kind of man dancing, anything. this takes us could be draped around tom harwood, but there you go anyway. right. so that you go anyway. right. so that you claimed was mark you just claimed it was mark long? yes, that's true, actually. okay, actually. sorry, mark. okay, i'll be christmas, everybody. we're over . moving i'll be christmas, everybody. we're over. moving on. we're moving over. moving on. right. okay fun fact. now, every day a school day. so day is a school day. so yesterday learned that yesterday patrick learned that the is at 3 pm. the king's speech is at 3 pm. has been way for 90 years. has been that way for 90 years. don't know how you missed that. anyway lindsay's has been in touch wanted to let touch saying she wanted to let us that in blankets us know that pigs in blankets are known as kilted sausages in scotland. oh, that's scotland. i love it. oh, that's fantastic. guinness is that kilted sausages. does does exquisite actually kilted sausages. i'm going to change that going be known that now. it's going to be known as as a kilt. a kilt and as as as a kilt. as a kilt and sausage. as as as a kilt. as a kilt and sausage . and i'll share one sausage. and i'll share one more. this jacqueline, who more. this from jacqueline, who says song is says her favourite song is the christmas owen king cole christmas owen by nat king cole . i christmas owen by nat king cole .i hope christmas owen by nat king cole . i hope people know what that is because i and then she is because i don't. and then she says , for christmas, it's very says, for christmas, it's very simple. this year, very
8:23 am
traditional up our trees traditional fishing up our trees , decorations. but this , the decorations. but this yean , the decorations. but this year, for the first time, it's a live tree. god, it's going to be chicken instead of a set of turkeys. yeah, exactly. i mean, i welcome people paying 150 quid for turkeys. just just get it. i was that morrisons . i love that. was that morrisons. i love that. you just know that off your head. well, people kept sending him pictures about saying, oh, have you seen this? yes i've seen it. yeah, yeah, right. vaiews@gbnews.uk, keep those . vaiews@gbnews.uk, keep those. he is coming in. we will get some of your pictures on the screen some point. i am screen at some point. i am reassured by that. got reassured by that. we've got loads more over absolute loads more coming over absolute willows. here we go. another willows. oh, here we go. another clip. his here's me clip. here is his here's me going for a flippin. clip. here is his here's me going for a flippin . river like going for a flippin. river like you showed it . the light the you showed it. the light the clock showed it. yeah, yeah , clock showed it. yeah, yeah, yeah. right . clock showed it. yeah, yeah, yeah. right. it'sjust clock showed it. yeah, yeah, yeah. right. it's just not clock showed it. yeah, yeah, yeah. right . it's just not left yeah. right. it's just not left up . they go .
8:24 am
8:26 am
welcome back. you are watching and listening to breakfast with patrick and ellie . you are patrick and ellie. you are indeed. happy christmas, everybody. now, it's been a year to remember for some and to forget for many, especially in british politics. no one can deny that. so we decided to review the year to the most
8:27 am
iconic pictures of the last year. review the year to the most iconic pictures of the last year . we iconic pictures of the last year. we yearin iconic pictures of the last year. we year in politics. i think we can all agree on that. three prime ministers, four chancellors and hundreds of official visits. the yearis hundreds of official visits. the year is nearly over, but there have been many memorable moments captured by the cameras. joining me in the studio now is chief political photographer of the press association . stefan, it's press association. stefan, it's good to see you. nice to see you all for coming in. we're going to look at some photographs now from the year. i think it's important that we remember, my goodness, so much has happened dunng goodness, so much has happened during the year. i know . who during the year. i know. who would have thought we'd be where we the start of the we are now? at the start of the year? i mean, goodness, exactly. well, photograph well, the first photograph we're going at photograph going to look at is a photograph of the then prime minister, bofis of the then prime minister, boris johnson. he's on a plane where more was up to. this is on the way. this is on the way to india and i this picture, india and i picked this picture, this picture because the prime minister, whenever he goes on
8:28 am
foreign always briefs foreign trips, always briefs journalists they journalists, talks, and they have call it on have a huddle, they call it on the but in past, in the plane, but in the past, in the plane, but in the past, in the 20 years i've been travelling with prime travelling with the prime minister, never able minister, i've never been able to this. his to photograph this. and his people can take a people said, you can take a picture this time and it just makes picture. but makes this great picture. but you the journalists, you know, all the journalists, all very much listening. but what important what what was important is what i this went out on on this picture went out on on a wire service and i tweeted it. it got so much interaction, especially from people from india and journalists from india, because they said, i wish our prime minister would see this because he doesn't speak to the media he would the media directly. he would never hold a briefing like this with journalists. close and with journalists. so close and talk direct . and so talk to them, direct. and so i thought that was very important . and what a lot of . and you know, what a lot of people say our meet our prime ministers are very managed now. and i just said today about rishi sunak actually when was and i just said today about risnorthern actually when was and i just said today about risnorthern ireland, when was and i just said today about risnorthern ireland, it'sen was and i just said today about risnorthern ireland, it's very was at northern ireland, it's very tightly course tightly managed and of course it's tightly but it's tightly managed, but i think shows actually that think this shows actually that our politicians are very much in touch with journalists. oh, completely . and i'm like you. completely. and i'm like you. i've moaned about it the
8:29 am
i've moaned about it in the past about access , you know, in about access, you know, in control. yeah. but actually there's not many people, you know, you know, know, this is, you know, he's very accessible have very accessible to have journalists they can ask journalists ask and they can ask about you know, about anything at all. you know, and ifs about anything at all. you know, and it's very and i think it's very interesting. there's no notes in front boris just talking. front of boris just talking. yeah, absolutely nothing to yeah, no. absolutely nothing to . on your second . well, on your second photograph of as well. photograph is of boris as well. well is on on, on said trip well this is on on, on said trip to india. this is in i'm going about the first place we went and this is just a classic boat picture isn't this i mean you know he was good value for photographs for us and this is arriving at university and it's kind of a welcoming ceremony. but just this would only happen to bo so ratty wrapped his head in a turban but it just kind of got all mangled. and of course, he just goes it, you know? he just goes with it, you know? i anybody else have i mean, anybody else would have been out way, been ushered out the way, i think, by advisers. oh no, this is going wrong. let's try and get a photographers out of the way. he just thrived way. but i mean, he just thrived on he loved and i think on it. he loved it. and i think that colour from boris will be sadly think because sadly missed, i think because a lot. yeah. was, he
8:30 am
lot. yeah. yeah. no, he was, he was quite unique on the side of him. yeah of course. yeah exactly. so the next is exactly. so the next picture is a totally different picture and it's between rishi it's the contest between rishi sunak , the first contest we had sunak, the first contest we had through the summer. if you remember, and this is when it was announced won the was announced who'd won the campaign the beginning campaign at the beginning of september. first contest. september. that first contest. and is the announcement and this is the announcement when gets announced by sir when he gets announced by sir graeme brady as a 1922 committee. it was one and they said, no, i remember photographing in 2000, 19, jeremy hunt and boris johnson , jeremy hunt and boris johnson, if you remember. yeah, sitting at the front in exactly the same situation and was situation. and when it was announced that boss had won, he got up, shook hands with jeremy hunt. and it was quite a, you know, a feisty campaigner. yeah, but they shook hands and he got up on stage made his up on stage and made his acceptance speech. what was quite noticeable here is they kept between the kept this chair in between the model, there was no model, and there was no interaction brady's interaction between brady's chair , presume was. it chair, i presume it was. it wasn't, actually. he came straight on stage . right. and so straight on stage. right. and so it was just nobody sat there and they just didn't look at each other at all. i mean, certainly
8:31 am
liz truss didn't look to richard sunak and he would have known. and the chair yeah, yeah, they're told before. and then when up to take the, when she got up to take the, take stand and her take the stand and make her speech, didn't turn to shake speech, she didn't turn to shake his at all and i thought his hand at all and i thought that was really noticeable because it's quite quite because it's quite been quite a spiky, call it . yeah. yeah, spiky, i call it. yeah. yeah, exactly, . well, let's exactly, exactly. well, let's look at this picture . the next look at this picture. the next picture that you've brought in. for sudden there's trees, for a sudden there's trees, coffee, standing in the region. well, just fun well, this is just quite a fun picture because this is this is what liz truss. what waiting for, liz truss. this is the following day. so she gets announced leader she gets announced as leader of the the the conservative party on the i think was a monday tuesday think it was a monday tuesday she goes to see the queen comes back and comes into downing street to make her first speech on the steps of number ten. but just before she arrived, it absolutely threw it down. torrential rain. her staff . and torrential rain. her staff. and if you may, theresa coffey was herself campaign manager, deputy prime anas sarwar. yeah, absolutely. and it just the skies opened to the point at which i think they told liz truss to the block
8:32 am
truss to go around the block a few times to wait for the rain to on the right, looks to jump on the right, looks complete chaos. so something's just ramrod just standing there. ramrod straight . and the next straight. and the next photograph looking at is photograph we're looking at is a joyous photograph . it's one of joyous photograph. it's one of liz truss when she's out on a bike during her short tenure. well. well well, quite. i think i only did two visits with her and this is during the conservative party conference in birmingham building site birmingham to a building site and seems and yeah, everything seems quite, quite good. you know, if you remember relationship you remember the relationship between chancellor between her and her chancellor started down after started to break down after that. yeah, but this is just one of great photo ops that we of those great photo ops that we wait young these these wait for young these on these visits. one is that visits. and the one next is that one of change? rishi sunak and the 1922. exactly, yeah . no. the 1922. exactly, yeah. no. if you all the votes each you remember all the votes each time somebody was knocked out of a campaign cigarette and brady would announce it in one of the committee rooms in the houses of parliament day the i think parliament the day the i think all the candidates dropped out on the second and just on the second campaign and just allowed tell you allowed rishi to tell you to take talked him into take it. and i talked him into letting me in do a picture of letting me in to do a picture of them all the in this them all in the in this committee room there. so grand.
8:33 am
and it was just so that was the first picture of him prime first picture of him as prime minister goodness me, i'm your last pictures. enjoyed, last two pictures. i enjoyed, because one is of because the first one is of president macron walking towards. prime minister, my towards. well prime minister, my goodness , he actually broke into goodness, he actually broke into a goodness, he actually broke into 6109 goodness, he actually broke into a jog . yeah. keen to see him, a jog. yeah. keen to see him, though. absolutely this is a the cop summit in sharm el sheikh. and it was our first. first meeting. yeah. as sunak as prime minister. and he came round the corner and they literally sort of . my concern run to wall of. well my concern run to wall is, you know how you do . wow is, you know how you do. wow motorcar including a discussion about multicultural as in this houday about multicultural as in this holiday as well. yes. you wouldn't want to mess us on christmas. what do you have? it was awesome views as well. i believe he's looking mean. people have been getting in touch. lots you getting touch. yes, lots of you getting in this is from pizza. in touch. this is from pizza. who in religion i was who says in the religion i was born we do not celebrate born in, we do not celebrate christmas, but i do enjoy the time off. i watch films and especially gb news. well,
8:34 am
especially watch gb news. well, thank much. pizza thank you very much. pizza for choosing though don't choosing us even though don't celebrate christmas. what celebrate christmas. but what can to enjoy the coverage can i do to enjoy the coverage anyway? john says, good morning, guys. to see a happy guys. it's nice to see a happy faces morning . i still faces live this morning. i still haven't made it to bed. i've been all night wrapping presents for helping prepare for the family, helping prepare . sorry . i'm for the family, helping prepare . sorry. i'm going to be . yeah sorry. i'm going to be this this stuff. so go to wash them out. you know, i'm going to something. you can't get it. get it. hey, was that john? right, john? we all know the truth, john. i've been up all night wrapping last night. john's been working hard. okay, okay, whatever whatever, get whatever. whatever, to get a quick nap before the kids wake up. possibly wishful thinking. have day , guys. well, have a great day, guys. well, merry christmas to and merry christmas to you all. and hopefully you got all those christmas presents wrapped. it takes time, because takes time, you know, because you shopping. you didn't finish your shopping. no, my no, i didn't finish. my shopping. i didn't finish shopping. i didn't finish shopping. think shopping. i'm but i think for me, bringing of me, i'm bringing a gift of myself my face. i know. all myself to my face. i know. all right. oh, yeah. all eyes . right. oh, yeah. all eyes. anyway. you've been anyway. look, les, you've been getting thank you getting into this. thank you very, very much. i am reliable , very, very much. i am reliable, informed at some point informed that at some point there some pictures there might be some pictures
8:35 am
that and then we that you've set. and then we have a times have upstairs a few times christmas etc. hopefully christmas trees, etc. hopefully they will be coming over very shortly. yes, i'll just share one more here. sarah says, morning, eddie and patrick. thank starting my thank you to starting my day a positive way. recently positive way. i've recently moved out a few doors down from my gorgeous grandsons my two gorgeous grandsons currently waiting for the message. and then i message. say they up and then i can go round watch them can go round and. watch them unwrap from santa . unwrap their gifts from santa. how i'm that's from sarah. so sarah hope that they wake up soon and have a lovely christmas morning with your grandsons. but merry christmas to you and do keep coming in. keep them keep them coming in. keep them coming you're having coming in. you're having a wonderful christmas whatever it is doing . yes. well, is that you're doing. yes. well, goal is that you're doing. yes. well, goal. got to away . okay. oh, goal. got to be away. okay. oh, i believe that. we have another clip now of one of my challenges from finding my face. i think this is me committing a robbery . it's a pretty good job. yeah. for debate. it was really . and for debate. it was really. and he bonded with lelo at the end. they did work . yeah, right. they did work. yeah, right. everyone if we just grab the lead and i'm going to walk the

8:38 am
8:39 am
tom, who says good morning and merry christmas. here's a picture of my tree . we're just picture of my tree. we're just having here, tom. having a quick look here, tom. now, that on the top? i'm now, what's that on the top? i'm i'm so certain. so the issue i'm not so certain. so the issue is that we've got very small screens been showing . is it screens been showing. is it lunchboxicon screens been showing. is it lunchbox icon on see what that is bruce willis in die hard very obviously dah dah . right. okay. obviously dah dah. right. okay. well well done that might be that might be tree of the day. so oh, good. you know , i did so oh, good. you know, i did that because it's really away. you see these girls like a little bit like bulbs off, no glove, no. got the bottles what they say anyway. right. good morning. merry christmas. he said this is a picture of my tree which includes elf calls bruce willis off of die hard . bruce willis off of die hard. no.then bruce willis off of die hard. no. then we've got you on the early then. vanessa early and then. then vanessa says merry christmas. here's a picture of cat and my picture of my cat and my christmas tree again. i'm not sure whether i'm leaving it don't. but it's not a tree behind. if you go , you
8:40 am
behind. if you go, you wallpapered your house to look like a norwegian forest. i mean, there is efforts. well done. vanessa well, i'm just just i will go . charles done that. well will go. charles done that. well vanessa i think that's exactly what she's done. it is a norwegian fir pine, you know that you know vanessa is pretty gasp and you just at least this time every area goes you know it's not worth the hassle she's wallpapering them from the front room again as he goes guy goes stuff right rose he's been all right. good morning. i am patrick moore. oh, look . oh god patrick moore. oh, look. oh god wishing you a very merry christmas from mark tara and it needs to let us know who's here you that. oh his joke again he has still so very angry. it looks like vanessa's husband isn't a wolves. he's putting the old me again. he's up anyway . old me again. he's up anyway. that's going to go. we've
8:41 am
enjoyed that. so thank you. please keep them coming in. your pet pet pictures and your tree pictures. i'm enjoying your commentary. i love it. i'll do a show. all of this anyway knows that it is, of course, the key to the two cracking studio panellists having the studio right now. because this tool joining us now this morning is lawyer and futurist andrew bowen and author of being a con . and and author of being a con. and you're going to take us the you're going to take us to the new papers today. but there is the news, right? the online news, right? who wants start? ladies first. wants to start? ladies first. all right. the cost of living happening, we that'll bring happening, we know that'll bring us down. oh, it's undone on that. now 500 on the christmas i think christmas day is about celebration. and i think the christmas day today, we should be celebrating all the volunteers and the charity. yeah the food bank workers , people the food bank workers, people going out. and then particularly on this occasion that everyone deserves appeal. deserves a christmas appeal. swansea, who have been distributing hampers and these hampers have got the revenues about £50. they got a roast dinner , they've got rice, dinner, they've got rice, potatoes , all the veggies to go
8:42 am
potatoes, all the veggies to go in there . and i think when we in there. and i think when we think about cost of living, we also have to that unique sense of people coming together, communities coming together , communities coming together, people running together. and i think that's the spirit of christmas and there's nothing that unites people more than a common enemy . and the cost of common enemy. and the cost of living crisis is a common enemy. if we relook at the way we think about food , re—educate people about food, re—educate people basically half the world's starving. but there's enough food to feed everybody. so look at food redistribution. i mentioned earlier the charity i'm involved with, uk harvest and about educating and others about educating people food ladbaby at people about food ladbaby at number one, talking about food banks so people are aware of it so people can work out. there is help out there. we are all in this together . we're on the same this together. we're on the same ocean, not on the same boat, on the ocean. and make the same ocean. try and make people of what is people aware of what is possible, help there possible, what help is there available of year available at this time of year i think is important and definitely andrew let's let's have a look at a quite an awkward exchange yesterday shall we what. i see and you tend to
8:43 am
find the people that the politicians like to get down with, the people they base inappropriate comments and you can tell it's like from theresa may dancing to dancing queen , may dancing to dancing queen, all that of stuff when they all that sort of stuff when they try and deal ordinary folk try and deal with ordinary folk , it doesn't always turn out very well. so this was an unfortunate exchange change with rishi. he went to a homeless centre and basically it was an excruciating exchange, they said because he was asking them if he's going to get into financial services . when he visited the services. when he visited the centre on the side. would you like to get into that? he said. i wouldn't mind, but i don't know. i'd like to get through christmas first and it rather reminded me, i was saying about the unfortunate exchange that lady had . you might lady sarah hussey had. you might use that sarah was her sister . use that sarah was her sister. she was even worse exchange . but she was even worse exchange. but susan hussey you're right, she was even worse exchange. but susan hussey you're right , the susan hussey you're right, the exchange that she had asking where are you from and always say it's about intention , it was
8:44 am
say it's about intention, it was about what do they actually intend when they're trying to do this, they're trying to liaise with people and so on and so forth. it's ill advised or maybe no advice at all. so learn the art of talk. learn what you can say putting your foot in say without putting your foot in it. intended to it. i think she intended to cause offence. it was naive . got cause offence. it was naive. got a feeling we might have a clip of it, but we now . we've done of it, but we now. we've done well. it's silly. well, that was wishful thinking. well, let's go back to bruce. yes. on christmas tree, he said. but what's up? yeah, but i mean, he just it just sound little bit like, just sound a little bit like, look, know, what it's look, you know, i know what it's like. like i'm bashing like. i'm like i'm bashing ratio, anything like that. but i mean, that is an app lutely mean, that is an app so lutely terrible our terrible question to ask our homes in business going homes are you in business going to get into business and it doesn't it doesn't help when it comes the idea that he's comes to the idea that he's a bit out of touch. yeah but it's certainly out of touch. i think he should remember the homeless man who died on the streets next, his dog in hull. if you remember , he put his dog to bed remember, he put his dog to bed the night before . it was outside the night before. it was outside costa in the morning he was
8:45 am
found dead . and i think i'm sure found dead. and i think i'm sure he must have read about this story, but it the sensitivity in going to this place and we talked about advising, well, who were the advisers and why wasn't he briefed and should he not have these this understanding? doesit have these this understanding? does it need advising? not like some people . i mean, for some people. i mean, for example, we said we've had this discussion about rishi sunak in terms his interaction and terms of his interaction and some born into some people are born into wealth. is no we you know, wealth. there is no we you know, i born and somebody i wasn't born and somebody massive wealth but the massive wealth but it's the interaction understanding interaction of understanding the people have put thi s £2 people that you have put this £2 billion household homeless budget forward . well who are the budget forward. well who are the people they are . i did get a dig people they are. i did get a dig . the one thing i would say just to counter it is in it everyone's capable of a poor turn of phrase goodness . knows i turn of phrase goodness. knows i am. i mean, i've done at least 55 of them already today . yeah. 55 of them already today. yeah. everyone's capable of a little bit of a faux pas. i'm not sure necessarily translates as he doesn't care or whatever, but it could do anyway. there we go. what else to go? well, i think
8:46 am
but briefly detracted but just very briefly detracted from the main message . and he from the main message. and he was there to pledge 2 billion to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping over three years. that was really positive thing on was the really positive thing on that of basis, was that sort of basis, which was a shame in terms of other stories. we about the king's we were talking about the king's speech i what's going to speech and i what's going to happen. this is going to be taking on the speech to make that make sense. it's happening very, very soon as it had been limbering up in st george's chapel, which is appropriate chapel, which is an appropriate place because that's where both his mother and father are laid to rest. it's the first king's speech we've for over 70 speech we've had for over 70 years. and every time talk about the king's speech, he was reminded of the movie. yeah, the 2010 which talking 2010 movie, which we're talking about green room , and about in the green room, and that with colin that wonderful one with colin firth and geoffrey rush and that sort of stuff. well, i particularly like looking at the king's speech story, is the fact that the very first king's speech was written the person speech was written by the person who wrote the jungle book, rudyard kipling . and always rudyard kipling. and i always said, king the king of said, i'm the king the king of the suite. they worked on the suite. and they worked on
8:47 am
that basis. but it's be that sort of basis. but it's be interesting. he will undoubtedly pay interesting. he will undoubtedly pay tribute her majesty, the pay tribute to her majesty, the queen, served brilliantly queen, who served as brilliantly throughout her life in her very first queen's speech, she praised her father, who died at a very tender age. and in her last queen's speech, she praised her husband. i'm sure that prince charles will be doing the same about his mother. yes. yeah, i think it's to be very emotional lots people not emotional for lots of people not seeing majesty at 3 pm. and seeing her majesty at 3 pm. and seeing her majesty at 3 pm. and seeing king charles instead . seeing king charles instead. certainly going to be different. rubina should we have a little look our sun to track us west look at our sun to track us west of paris and then we're in of paris and then we're still in vegas still in vegas. vegas and she's still in vegas. that's question. let's have that's the question. let's have a right he's in alaska a look right now. he's in alaska . oh look at the top, top, left hand corner. he tells you area. it's just so your map. your map knowledge was credible, ali. you just got to show it. just show or any any map, any signs , just or any any map, any signs, just exactly is . like lisa exactly where it is. like lisa is probably delivered or his presence . i don't know. all the presence. i don't know. all the families are waking now to getting ready for christmas
8:48 am
dinner. they'll have christmas , dinner. they'll have christmas, christmas lunch at 2:00. get ready for the king's speech. but it's really interesting, though, the number of people who are going to watch the christmas films. i think this should be a festive. films are going to be watched . and i'm reminded of watched. and i'm reminded of scrooge and the christmas carol, all of those really traditional . yeah, and they are christmas . . yeah, and they are christmas. i think it's because i was i was brought up in kent i was brought up in rochester. so the dickens centre was just around the corner then dickens high street. and i remember growing up and my brother used to dress up as a chimney sweep and we were part of the scrooges. you of one of the scrooges. you know, stories dickens. know, the stories of dickens. and i that that at that and i think that that at that time just that feeling. time you just have that feeling. and christmas carol or and i think christmas carol or scrooge, those are the things that the wonderful life ought to be. one that's my favourite sunday, brother . oh, you must sunday, brother. oh, you must watch it. i took the whole family to heart a cinema. all that was the most glorious thing that was the most glorious thing that plump possible cushions that the plump possible cushions that the plump possible cushions that you could have espresso martinis side . that you could have espresso martinis side. i mean, martinis on the side. i mean,
8:49 am
what he will weep through that movie is one of the most touching movies you will ever seen. and as a message for our time about when you and your lowest possible point there is hope out there and the difference that you will make to the world is tremendous. and what i read late classic, isn't it? absolute classic it really, really is. i believe that as time ought to be prevailing, there's no papers . but thank you there's no papers. but thank you very much. it's a joy to joy to have you ribena andrew thank you very much. are you with us next hour? do we have another round? so i think we're all fingers crossed. yeah, absolutely. unless they're going to strike anyone rights . now, one anyone else's rights. now, one of the uk is youngest among signed by many and is wife melissa. what has travelled today to manchester to celebrate christmas with her parents ? yes, christmas with her parents? yes, subo was raised as a muslim . his subo was raised as a muslim. his wife melissa grew up in non—royal agius family and converted to islam ten years ago. well, the camp believes that spending christmas with
8:50 am
melissa's parents is an important gesture, that interfaith family. well, joining us now is sabah ahmadi to tell us now is sabah ahmadi to tell us his story. sabah welcome to the show. thank you so much for joining us to tell us about your plans for today. joining us to tell us about your plans for today . so we travelled plans for today. so we travelled to manchester a few days ago to spend christmas day with my in—laws . spend christmas day with my in—laws. it's a spend christmas day with my in—laws . it's a celebration they in—laws. it's a celebration they wish they do and i partake in their happiness. so today , well, their happiness. so today, well, my kids and melissa have already gone to her parents house because obviously the cost will because obviously the cost will be quiet. otherwise you would have had jumping over have had kids jumping all over me. but today's plan is to go over there, have christmas lunch with them , and then with them, and then swap presents it'll be a really presents and it'll be a really nice to have somebody come nice time to have somebody come together. and what happens are christmas is really christmas day, which is really nice, in—laws invite my nice, is my in—laws invite my parents over on christmas day and then on either day when we eat, parents invite my eat, my parents invite my in—laws over here and then we have eat together . so it's have eat together. so it's really nice to have both families together at such a special time for each family. so that's the plan for today. susie
8:51 am
enthused on i head over that to their house. well, that sounds lovely . it's so that you lovely. it's so nice that you can those common themes in can get those common themes in your celebrations. so togetherness and family and love . how do you explain to your children? how do they and do they know what's going on and? how do you say, you know, this isn't all religion, but this is something we're doing today? how how does that work ? yeah, so how does that work? yeah, so much children are raised in a muslim household, but it's really important for me to that they know what their grandparent do and what they celebrate. it was important to them. so, of course, our house we pray course, in our house we pray together. we read the holy koran , to the mosque regularly , we go to the mosque regularly for prayers so that education of islam is there. but also when my in—laws they know in—laws come over, they know that they're not and they that they're not muslim and they do certain different so do certain a different way. so it's nice to have that set up in my own house. but when they go to their grumpy grandparents house, grandpa's house, house, nanny grandpa's house, then are then they know things are a little bit different . so but little bit different. so but what do you take from christmas . so
8:52 am
what do you take from christmas. so christmas or the day of christmas or the day of christmas itself is within the community itself. we look out for those individuals who might be struggling so this year amea, the arm of the muslim youth association, we've partnered with marie curie and we've allowed people to nominate who they see might be struggling . a they see might be struggling. a tough time, cost of living and whatever. we've prepared whatever. and we've prepared hampers to give to people in the uk today spread over 22 different regions and in the hamper as we can see on screen, they'll be candles, food , they'll be candles, food, toiletries, toys, even depending on who has nominated the individual, whether it's a child, an adult. so really it's an integral part of islam is looking out for the community and your neighbours. so that's something i'll be part of today. i really excited to see people happy and spending time with their family and putting a smile on someone's face who might be going a time going through a tough time dunng going through a tough time during this. so lately. well, that's just great stuff. so but now little slightly
8:53 am
now a little bit what slightly off i can't but off topic. i can't help but nofice off topic. i can't help but notice you're manchester notice that you're manchester i as soon as this show is over. well actually that's not quite sure i've do another show sure i've got to do another show after but got want to, after but then got to want to, want to and then i'm coming to manchester. about all you . manchester. what about all you. it doesn't matter. i'm going to dmu. you've got a dummy. let's go for a coffee. yeah. oh, let's make up. and when you come in, you come to the north. i feel just the world is so much eafien just the world is so much easier, so much choose. it's quieter for sure. oh, yeah. let's connect and i'll see you on this side of the world. hey there you go. fantasy yourself. well, keep up the good work. great day every sabbath. thank you very, very much. and your family wonderful and family have a wonderful day and keep doing it day. saba, thank you coming on. oh, well, you for coming on. oh, well, lovely it's very dallas. lovely man. it's very dallas. fine us. it's nice that you still take something from christmas . yes. together christmas. yes. together with these you see. see, these kids. well, you see. see, these kids. well, you see. see, the thing is, you ask , what the thing is, when you ask, what do from christmas ? and do you take from christmas? and i you want to only take i thought you want to only take is just presents and food. i mean i'm religious , don't get me
8:54 am
mean i'm religious, don't get me wrong. yeah, but it made me think, you know, even though that religion, actually, that is my religion, actually, i'm much to take. although i'm very much to take. although i'm very much to take. although i'm an only child . and i'm an only child. and that really by way , in my really shows, by the way, in my personality, also just the personality, but also just the way i open, the way you conduct, the way i can it myself on the way i can do it myself on that. but also just the way i open because i do open presents because i just do the simple of the the very simple idea of the night. first of all, night. well, first of all, i open my presence before christmas. so there's that. and then of that, the way then on top of that, the way i open the i it, i look at open the maze, i it, i look at it for a minute thousand eyes, drop it just on to the drop it and just move on to the next one. oh yeah. see next one. oh really. yeah. see i'm theatrical with my i'm very theatrical with my present. i think probably doesn't surprise you. oh, and you do big. oh, my you have to do a big. oh, my gosh, this is amazing. you gosh, this is amazing. thank you so if you hate it, so much. even if you hate it, even if do want to know the even if you do want to know the worst president i've ever had you desperately and i thought you desperately and i thought you so this is about, you would. so this is about, gosh, years whenever the gosh, 12 years ago, whenever the blackberry huge blackberry phones were huge numbers. time numbers. yeah. yeah, long time ago. mum for ago. anyway i asked my mum for a blackberry phone for christmas. she gave a box and then that box became another box and was ripping off all these layers. it was one of those russian
8:55 am
was like one of those russian dolls smaller. dolls that just get smaller. it's i was meant to and it's when i was meant to and there was no to be had. there was no phone to be had. but what she gave me was a little blackberry. i can actually it was funny or actually think it was funny or very funny and i did have cry. very funny and i did have a cry. yeah. actually crusty. they yeah. and actually crusty. they let me. anyway, happy christmas morning more pages morning to all more pages have been christmas been pouring out of christmas trees and it's james hawes found it well this is bandit of his we've had this time of this show very blessed that i get a whole space. no, no that's so cute. that's a fun to hat on bandit. and jane is actually directing the show right now just you know, it's an extra special thank you. and i'm just hearing on that horse belongs to a woman who works in the gallery just behind here . apparently behind us here. apparently that's her horse. so i just said, is that is that right? yes is it sorry? it's hard for me to hear you when the ladies horse is keeps talking in my ear while i'm on the telly rise is joey the producer's dyed his hair.
8:56 am

8:58 am
9:00 am
9:01 am
some of his elves are delivering a breakfast show to be proud of. yes. so lately, this is what award winning tv looks like . award winning tv looks like. ladies and gentlemen, you might not think it, but it is anyway. good morning. it's a what time is it? 9:00 on christmas day. anyway, this is your christmas day breakfast with me? patrick christys and ellie costello right ? shall we get cracking? we right? shall we get cracking? we tell top stories there. his face is cool. yet these are top stories this morning. celebrating a life in service. king charles will reflect on the loss of his mother and her legacy when he gives his first christmas message. today and in return to festive tradition , the return to festive tradition, the royal standard will fly high above family's sandringham above the family's sandringham estate . yes, indeed. out estate. yes, indeed. write out how expensive this christmas being for you. with many people being for you. with many people being plunged into death and facing running as the energy costs this year may not have been as affordable as the last, but we will be speaking to an economist this little economist about this a little bit later on in the show. also, look, people , we need a bit of
9:02 am
look, people, we need a bit of help from you on this. we want well, there's some stuff that about christmas i have great about christmas did i have great stuff want want to know stuff but i want i want to know i to know best and i want to know your best and worst up. you probably worst friends up. you probably already would already open some now i would imagine give it out some imagine i would give it out some absolutely terrible ones. and it's the show. help it's that time of the show. help us out a little bit here. send them in your best and worst presents. jeeves gibney's uk guests. also going to guests. and we're also going to be the christmas be talking about the christmas dinner how you christmas it dinner and how you christmas it can period can be a can be the period can be a season on healthy but season on healthy eating but perhaps can make a few small perhaps we can make a few small changes the fun, changes just to enjoy the fun, but be a little bit but maybe be a little bit healthy as well. more on that a little bit later. so are a few stuck at high stocks to i? having said that look this what i'm on my mug. i'm moving on behind my mug. yes. how aidan magee is . yes. well how aidan magee is. yes. well how aidan magee is. yes it's going to the what what would you say is it i mean because rice cakes isn't very much jim rice anyway. and then food and you can't see that . but food and you can't see that. but it's a label. so any other. but you can join all discussions if you can join all discussions if you really want to give that dvd. so you can do how you're all having a wonderful christmas
9:03 am
ever , anybody. right. and can ever, anybody. right. and can i just say a massive you to just say a massive thank you to mark marcus and picture the mark marcus and picture of the day so far. we're going to get it your screens in a matter it on your screens in a matter of moments. a little bit. is his dog in the pub drinking a pint the best of british? well . merry the best of british? well. merry christmas to everyone . and our christmas to everyone. and our top story, king charles will make his first annual christmas speech today . yes, indeed. speech today. yes, indeed. right. okay. so it will mark the first occasion in which a king delivers a televised christmas message and we can speak very shortly to our royal reports. the cameron walker . yes happy the cameron walker. yes happy christmas, cameron. how are you? i'm very well, thank you. merry christmas to both of you. oh, very christmas. merry christmas. ihope very christmas. merry christmas. i hope santa brought everything that your heart desired . and but that your heart desired. and but what's going on there is he's going to be king charles is made an christmas speech. yes it will
9:04 am
be. yes it was recorded on the 13th of december. so last week in the choir at st george's chapelin in the choir at st george's chapel in windsor. now, that's very significant because that is where the late queen, queen elizabeth second, was laid to rest just three months ago with her late husband, prince philip . so it's particularly poignant for king and the royal family i think this shows that perhaps in this speech, a lot of it is going to be dedicated to the life and legacy of his late mother. we've seen an actually released of his speech that happened yesterday and he stood up as well. now late queen in the last speech as she did in her a during her reign she was sat behind a desk, but in decades gone past, she was very much stood up as well as the king charles's wanting to perhaps portray that he's energised and sprightly and ready for his new role as king. there's also a christmas tree behind him and, all of the decorations on it. so i've been well informed, sustainable. so
9:05 am
it's of it's lots of and excuse me, lots of paper, lots of glass. there's also pinecones and natural material as well. so lots going on there. i think you'll also be very mindful of the cost of living crisis . he the cost of living crisis. he has made a personal donation over christmas to a fuel poverty charity , helping those with the charity, helping those with the costs of living, crisis and bills so and ensure that perhaps will also feature and of course it's being broadcast right here on gb news at 3 pm. today. i can't just say happy christmas, obviously . and what our viewers obviously. and what our viewers know, listeners realise is that we have the pleasure in the office of working with cameron . office of working with cameron. yes, most days he's in swanning around doing his thing and you are always so ultimately impeccably turned down and today it's christmas day . i don't know it's christmas day. i don't know where you are. i think he's had bndes where you are. i think he's had brides and presumably families. they're there to me. are you suhed they're there to me. are you suited up for his mate? well done. fantastic we'd expect
9:06 am
nothing less . well, coming. all nothing less. well, coming. all right. okay. thank you very much, cameron , back to you. we much, cameron, back to you. we have a wonderful christmas anyway. oh, you've had enough of you. well enough. i think we've got to move on. i'm sorry, cameron, onto what's going cameron, onto that. what's going on? . i was on? really is christmas. i was going ask you about son and going to ask you about son and mind was the to get getting mind what was the to get getting back lost pandora back on you never lost pandora because it. forsyth joins us because of it. forsyth joins us in the studio now. she's the host of the daily express. it's royal roundup. i'm glad royal roundup. but i'm glad you're i didn't you're here because i didn't go. i sorry about i think i'm going. sorry about this, everyone . i had questions this, everyone. i had questions . i've not even been drinking . . i've not even been drinking. you know . well, i've had you know. well, i've had a stunning year. you know. well, i've had a stunning year . you're a bit like stunning year. you're a bit like cameron. just always impeccably dressed. oh, so maybe it's something about a royal reporter . you just have to look beautiful over time . so the beautiful over time. so the question i was going to ask before everyone gets rid of him , what are the royal family up to today ? what are how they to today? what are how they celebrating? well it's going to be a lavish and lavish royal family. christmas day. i think
9:07 am
it's the first time they're all coming together at sandringham after covid. and of course, it's the first christmas with a new king . so he wants to impress the king. so he wants to impress the family . fair enough. yeah. and family. fair enough. yeah. and also the fact that it's a new king and obviously the passing of the late queen in the year she was so into her traditions and he'll very much be wanting to do the same thing. yeah, absolutely . and i don't know absolutely. and i don't know about eve. i don't want to see them tone it down. you know, i don't want to say tone deaf. i think they'll be careful about what they released to the public because obviously a cost of living crisis. yeah we can expect some kind of nod to that same said in the speech same cameron said in the speech previously but within previously at 3 pm. but within within the walls. i can expect it will be very lavish today . it will be very lavish today. but it's the royal family, of course. yes and so who are we expecting to be to be up in sandringham ? so obviously the sandringham? so obviously the new prince and princess of wales, all their children and wales, all of their children and the you know , very much the king's, you know, very much an open invite for the family to
9:08 am
attend . you've obviously got the attend. you've obviously got the wessexes there . you've got the wessexes there. you've got the princess royal , obviously, her princess royal, obviously, her husband, their children . but husband, their children. but even though it may quite large from the outside in terms of where they'll actually stay , where they'll actually stay, they might be staying in different cottages and stuff throughout the royal estate. but fergie has been invited officially this year and which is different actually, because she does get invited to some things, but not for the whole day in previous years. but she has been invited. so it's maybe face that we might see at christmas service with prince andrew, but that's not being confirmed quite the gathering then or let's have a look ahead to the king's speech, then a 3 pm. so we had a little bit of a preview there from from cameron what are you expecting in terms of tone? because it is going to be the balance of kind of be the balance of him kind of paving his own way, but also reflecting on the of his reflecting on the life of his mother. so at the forefront will be mother. we can be his late mother. we can expect theme throughout expect that theme throughout that likely be a nod that will most likely be a nod to everything that's happening
9:09 am
in world now. the war, in the world right now. the war, the cost of living, crisis at home. you can expect that. and also know that he's very much a religious man like his as well so we can expect lots of references towards faith and not just the christian faith you know, lots of faiths within the uk as we know that he's very much backing and supporting that with all of his different events he goes to. absolutely. got to ask , i take it they might not be ask, i take it they might not be talking about and meghan. no, i think that's subject probably the room. yeah. i don't think that's probably the best idea . that's probably the best idea. no, i expect that within the speech obviously he'll talk about the family as a whole . he about the family as a whole. he probably will do a personal mention to the prince and princess of wales and perhaps his . but other than that, his wife. but other than that, i don't issue a commitment . yeah, don't issue a commitment. yeah, well, did you speak before me ? i well, did you speak before me? i didn't get mentioned. that was my husband . yeah, he does have my husband. yeah, he does have quite an outpouring of love

9:21 am
same. we're just same. absolutely. we're just going to go with it right. well, how christmas being how expensive is christmas being for with bills for you? well, with high bills and costs, with 26% and surging food costs, with 26% of will be starting the of people will be starting the new year in debt, of people will be starting the new year in debt , apparently new year in debt, apparently some people this christmas will have struggled afford christmas presents christmas presents or even their christmas . yes. we're now by vicky . yes. we're joined now by vicky , who's chief economic , who's the chief economic adviser , the centre economic adviser, the centre for economic and business research. vicky, first of all, merry christmas to you, mary, thank you for joining us christmas morning. so us on your christmas morning. so tell how the cost of living tell us how the cost of living has affected people's christmases this year ? well, the christmases this year? well, the first thing to say is merry christmas to you, too. i have been listening to your show now because been kept on a because i've been kept on for a while i a smile on my while and i had a smile on my face continuously. so oh, but you haven't said that. i'm impeccably dressed as you told others, so i'm upset. wow. do you stop yourselves? i'm just going to have a look at the monitor now. you are impeccably dressed , impeccably dressed, dressed, impeccably dressed, well done, well done. a special have a special effort for you for too. but yes, it is a very
9:22 am
expensive there's no doubt about that. expensive there's no doubt about that . it will be interesting, that. it will be interesting, though, to see whether people are less because the data for december suggests that they that people haven't gone out to the shops. and we've seen retail confidence improving. we've seen actually the output data that comes from the services sector doing quite well in december. it's not doing fantastically well, but it's doing slightly better than it did in november. and october. so obviously people have been holding off making any purchases until the very end and of course, then we thought that due the strikes, the strikes, people would just going to go and shopping, maybe they did it, of course, by ordering things online, but we've had the strikes from royal mail as well. so one was beginning to wonder whether any of this would happen. but the data that's coming out suggests that perhaps december wasn't and people december wasn't bad and people have been buying the presents that they want to buy for their people that they really love. but of course, there is no doubt there is a lot less money around
9:23 am
cost of living are cost of living issues are important. real wages over the last year have fallen by something 3, just under 3. it means your your income has suffered. and of course , looking suffered. and of course, looking ahead, taxes are also going up and that is a problem, of course, for many households where the disposable incomes would be reduced over the coming yeah would be reduced over the coming year. and vicky one of the most startling things in the introduction there is that 26% of people will be starting 2023 in debt. that's a pretty worrying figure, isn't it ? yes, worrying figure, isn't it? yes, of course very low interest rates have encouraged that . rates have encouraged that. we've got to bear in mind it isn't just here. it's happened everywhere . that debt increased everywhere. that debt increased very significantly during the covid period , both on the public covid period, both on the public sector side and also private sector side and also private sector side. and a lot of businesses. we should not themselves in difficulty because of interest rates have of course interest rates have been going up they have been going up and they have accumulated lot of debt, which accumulated a lot of debt, which was, given lots of was, i think given with lots of guarantees the government guarantees by the government or they quite they were feeling quite confident because confident to borrow more because interest rates so . and what
9:24 am
interest rates were so. and what we've seen in the last months was unexpected because was quite unexpected because course in ukraine, course with the war in ukraine, which sent costs up and which sent input costs up and generally led to a fight against inflation by the central bank. so it's not an easy time. it's not an easy period when you look ahead. and that's why most of the forecasts have been downgraded for the coming year. this is interesting piece , this is an interesting piece, though, about employment. there's high there's still quite high employment going on right now. so unemployment rate is very low and there is a big incentive now by the government to say we can ease some of those input costs, particularly staff shortage and wages up by encouraging wages going up by encouraging all people who've moved all these people who've moved out the labour force to come out of the labour force to come back that's great. the back in. well, that's great. the only that what we're only problem is that what we're looking at now is that employment intentions and recruitment are recruitment intentions are slowing down. and so this isn't quite the time to encourage lots of to come back. let's of people to come back. let's see successful . see if they're successful. became good to became really, really good to have the program this have you on the program this morning. you much for morning. thank you so much for spending christmas morning spending your christmas morning with are your plans now with us. what are your plans now for rest of the day? i have
9:25 am
for the rest of the day? i have loads loads grandchildren . loads loads of grandchildren. oh, hugely, hugely old for my son. in fact, i have 11. so you can just guess. yes you're going to be busy on you . lots of to be busy on you. lots of prison, lots of presents . yes, prison, lots of presents. yes, indeed. let's go to work , which indeed. let's go to work, which we can relate to. yes. thanks ticky. brilliant to have you. merry christmas. bye bye . good merry christmas. bye bye. good stuff. what? we've got loads more to come, including the latest in sport with favourite friend of the channel. it's aidan magee, but before that. oh gosh, here we go . he's another gosh, here we go. he's another one of my challenges . so i used one of my challenges. so i used to chuckle find that faces get challenged all the time and this one apparently is football. so take it away to show him up when we were taking penalties. so we thought ongoing thought what an ongoing goal we've because we've got a slight issue because the orange of these the bright orange of these gloves has been attracting wasps. okay. so we'll see that. but yes , you've scored 20 but yes, you've scored 20 points. was it again, remind me 47 out of 48 .
9:28 am
.ohoh . oh oh well come back you're watching analysts to breakfast with patrick and any american christmas to you christmas everybody and patrick just used that at the break just to give total disclosure to you to eat your christmas curry. yeah, well well, it's in the morning . yes. well, it's in the morning. yes. well, yeah. so i. well everybody gets social better off. so someone might go have to carry
9:29 am
it . so make it good. someone might go have to carry it . so make it good . yeah. it it. so make it good. yeah. it was spicier than wanted. hey i am actually battling up and we'll be we'll be for a while. so there we go anyway. right. what is your favourite christmas film ? been asking gb news. and film? been asking gb news. and this is what they told us. christmas films are christmas film. i'm sorry it doesn't really fall into the christmas category, but i got to see die hard the night before christmas. homeland definitely home alone, miracle on the 13th i mean 34 to any any one of the co fright christmas elf yeah it's die hard a christmas movie know i'm sorry say it again it's die at christmas film or not die hard. i don't think die hard. i don't think i have. sorry well, i just makes you makes you happy . be makes you makes you happy. be happy to be british. and they
9:30 am
restores your faith in society . restores your faith in society. and you asked them what their favourite christmas film is and they're just unable to answer it. there we go. what's, what's your favourite christmas about the grinch . well, of the grinch. the grinch. well, of the grinch. the grinch. well, of the grinch. the grinch. well, of the grinch . i just think it's the grinch. i just think it's funny. it's funny it's nice. it's good. it's a good concept yeah, a wonderful life as well. a wonderful life. wonderful i see. i'm right. i haven't read that. i'm that as honest to say i actually like love. actually you're going to judge me for i know you will ask if you like it. solid film. oh, good, good, solid. here's a man who's on solid. now here's a man who's on tv a lot more than noel edmonds. it's these are it's aidan magee these are serious yes. but serious related sports. yes. but first what's your first of all, what's your favourite christmas anything i do love actually i watched do like love actually i watched it recently. the holiday is my favourite and if i could just get serious from i'm interested in holiday because the house came up for sale about three years was in this is no years ago. i was in this is no it was in the bleachers in i write 600 grand reports surprised. i was quite surprised. i was quite surprised. i was quite surprised. i thought that's quite that's that's not bad
9:31 am
value considering all the context context. now when watched the other day, i start looking of the looking at the spec of the property and thinking, what do you actually get for your money? and probably and then i realised probably only so six, 600 only two bedrooms. so six, 600 grams. b the ripple was grams. b the ripple effect was about as you thought about it. i thought quite is thought that's quite pokey is a little is really simple be a little bit is really simple be a little bit is really simple be a little wendy house if little bit more wendy house if i went into coronation street many years ago i'll have looked down the actually look the cobbles you actually look through it's through the letterbox and it's not house bookstore. not actually house bookstore. yes house. yes. it's yes not your house. yes. it's just a facade. is. just a facade. yeah, it is. pretty much, yeah. there's not much you've got much behind. you've got a bookshop, example. they bookshop, for example. they film that location, our that entirely on location, our real houses with real cul de sac houses with brick properties built in the early eighties for the purposes of yeah you last of that show. yeah you see, last night brookside, it was night it was brookside, it was it crossroads is the it crossroads. crossroads is the one when slam the one where when they slam the door said shake i think that door the said shake i think that was eldorado. it was no. well maybe were wrong. well i we maybe they were wrong. well i we can this is gripping can all agree this is gripping but before i see you just but let's before i see you just to sport i didn't to some sport i didn't impulsively vision impulsively get me out a vision as yeah, possibly yeah. as well. yeah, possibly yeah. look, lionel messi, we saw a huge performance from him during, i think
9:32 am
during, the world cup. i think psg, club to so psg, his club looked to that. so here a man who still here was a man who still performing very highest performing at the very highest level can . we committing to level can. we committing to another contract. his contract currently expires. his present deal expires at the end of june of 2023. they're going to extend that to another year with the opfion that to another year with the option of another after option of another year. after that, staying in that, he could be staying in paris. patrick until he's 37. can still do when he's 37? can he still do when he's 37? i'm not really sure. cristiano ronaldo will be there. you've got when you get got to hear when you get emotional about staying emotional about these staying at psg, it's incredible . i not only psg, it's incredible. i not only i started to come down with an aggressive cold. yeah. you've got to look forward last week i give you see i've just eaten incredibly spicy breakfast curry before as well. we had pandora on and i had a bit of an edge. i managed to scratch my eyeball and diplomacy writing christmas cartoons it enough. really? yeah. but even with me around. yeah, yeah. anyway, listen, a lot of he could step paris. it looks like the offer is on the table. deal was done in qatar while was world cup while was at the world cup because paris
9:33 am
because obviously paris saint—germain trained the saint—germain trained by the qatari family. looks qatari royal family. so looks as if he's staying put so if he's staying staying put so he be enjoying for him is he could be enjoying for him is his for a bit more. it his talent for a bit more. it also gives the option of also gives him the option of staying and possibly even staying there and possibly even winning a fifth champions league. have question league. so you have to question when someone's a world cup. that was there's little was the hunger. there's a little bit still left there. bit of hunger still left there. i think he wants win another champions league with a different all his different club. so all his previous been previous four have been his boss, so know to boss, bhumibol. so i know to talk about arsenal. yeah, well, no, mean, look, they're five no, i mean, look, they're five points at top of the points clear at the top of the league. leave christmas number points clear at the top of the leaglas leave christmas number points clear at the top of the leaglas we ve christmas number points clear at the top of the leaglas we as christmas number points clear at the top of the leaglas we as chriweres number points clear at the top of the leaglas we as chriwere told nber points clear at the top of the leaglas we as chriwere told about ones as we as we were told about five ago, seem aeons five weeks ago, seem to aeons away with world cup on the away with the world cup on the horizon. yeah, points horizon. but yeah, five points clear. won the league clear. they have won the league since can they do it this since 2004. can they do it this time? it depends on their belief because. this because. i've been in this position a few times before, not necessarily recently, because obviously have obviously city and chelsea have been liverpool been powerful. even liverpool as well. whether the well. so i just whether the teams around be at teams around them be looking at their look how their mentality, look at how they faded away at the end of last season. but i think we're another year. these players can really, kick but really, really kick on now. but it depends they it depends whether they can replace jesus in replace gabriel jesus in january. i think
9:34 am
january. still no fool. i think they'll but i think they'll fall away, but i think they've got no excuse not to spend big though. seriously, the question who the problem is. question is who the problem is. because they because you could argue they should in the likes should have brought in the likes of yeah, absolutely. of aubameyang. yeah, absolutely. but then sometimes i look at the teams suffer league and teams that suffer league and i think can make money think they can make money without actually signing players. where's players. and i wonder, where's incentive for excellence? because also cash cow because i'm also a cash cow financially, i sort of financially, you know, i sort of a cow. you argue about a cash cow. you can argue about united team. you could say, united your team. you could say, well they enough to well have they spent enough to compete with manchester city last years given what they last five years given what they generate where's generate off the pitch? where's the so 100 , £150 the in spending? so 100, £150 million striker that million in a striker when that could your profit a could wipe out your profit for a season still might only season and you still might only get points and still finish get more points and still finish second. got that. second. yeah, no, i got that. i've got the opportunity. but i just think that fans will want some right. because some action, right. because they're on they're going to be able rely on and katie not the same as no and katie is not the same as no no no scott player also city that you have squad you know that you have the squad you know they've eight games coming they've got eight games coming up three and a bit weeks it up in three and a bit weeks it doesn't seem to matter that kalvin to be a little kalvin is going to be a little bit overweight because got lots of other to compensate of other players to compensate for for campbell for for and sorry for campbell for that shaming. called
9:35 am

9:43 am
dennis. let's talk christmas. dennis. let's talk christmas. dennis whether you go for a traditional turkey meat traditional turkey or a meat free nut roast, there's plenty goes into making a hearty festive meal. and because gb news is the people's channel, we took the streets to hear from the general public about their christmas treats. what's the best christmas food for you ? best christmas food for you? probably potatoes. how do your potatoes mashed? definitely mashed . and mince pies. mashed. and mince pies. christmas food is on my favourites. anything certain kinds you know like much salt has in the pudding or christmas pudding. yeah probably. i don't like christmas pudding, so i won't be out with the. oh they do. these little sausages rolled in bacon. i think it's an engush in bacon. i think it's an english thing because we don't do it in australia. so yeah, probably that. and what are you guys going to do on christmas day? look just eat, guys going to do on christmas
9:44 am
day? look just eat , eat and i'm day? look just eat, eat and i'm sorry you. yeah. you've already talked . i cannot wait . my talked. i cannot wait. my christmas dinner kind of way for ice anyway. but it's not always the healthiest. but who said that christmas had to be calorific to share some tips on a nutritious dinners? you're not fearing the scales in the new yeah fearing the scales in the new year, we're joined by nutritionist monica price. good to you, monica, and thank you for joining us on your christmas morning. merry christmas. merry christmas. patrick merry christmas. we patrick merry christmas. we patrick merry christmas to you. i like a warm merry so i mean, is merry christmas so i mean, is now the time to think about healthy choices ? isn't christmas healthy choices? isn't christmas a day for kind of stuffing faces and not worrying about it too much lately? and you can have an asian as a nutritionist, i would say to enjoy your day as you say, it's christmas day and there's lots of food already . there's lots of food already. most people are probably already started eating that quality st or other lovely chocolates or other other lovely chocolates and is the thing i'd like and that is the thing i'd like to do is just make people aware of the kisses. an awful lot of
9:45 am
calories in the lovely christmas dinner and the way the way that i look at it is, just to have everything you want to have. but it really it's all about trying to those portions down just to get those portions down just a little bit. i'm really just to make you aware there is so make you aware that there is so many the average many calories, the average christmas we probably christmas day we will probably pile on between 7000 calories. so usually between six and a half to 7000 calories just in one day. so it's i like to just say to go for it, have a beautiful today and eat. but just just really make sure that you're aware that what's going on and your lovely roast potatoes are actually the ones that that are causing the most calories are there are 200 calories are there are 200 calories per potato so i think you're ruining my life . yeah, you're ruining my life. yeah, you're ruining my life. yeah, you see only that she also recently discovered the wonders of goose fat . so one thing i've of goose fat. so one thing i've been adding . adding to the been adding. adding to the calories. yeah oh, monica, we're going to be very bad students. but i was just saying, as you came i out so you can you can
9:46 am
it. yep that's the best that's the best bit at the dinner. unfortunately, i was to ask you, how do you how you go about, you know, that horrible feeling of your christmas dinner where you feel so sick because you've just stuffed your face much, you stuffed your face so much, you feel unwell . is any feel really unwell. is there any way avoid or try and way to avoid that or try and gain some control from from gain back some control from from completely stuffing a face? no, i think what you should try and do is drink water. we actually forget the importance water. so if you can try and maybe intermittently put one of those glass of wine or beer or whatever it is you're drinking and have a glass of water that really helps. of course, you really helps. and of course, you know, after the christmas dinner, know, try go out dinner, you know, try and go out for they have all keys. for walk. they have all keys. one of the best exercises . so one of the best exercises. so even go out 20, 30 even if you go out 20, 30 minutes, that will really just help everything in your gut. just get , you know, get going just get, you know, get going and make sure that your metabolism going . because metabolism keeps going. because unfortunately, christmas day unfortunately, on christmas day , we do tend to just sit , we tip we do tend to just sit and which a wonderful thing and eat, which a wonderful thing because i love my food as well.
9:47 am
but it's just knowing that, you know, if you're going to sit around all day and you're going to you are going to feel very sluggish. of course, for sluggish. and of course, for those on medication and those of you on medication and certain things like that and of course, some of you might be on a diet of some kind, you know, all things come into play. all these things come into play. so i would say if you just try if you can drink some water try and get out for a little bit of exercise because knowing that you you're going all you you're going to eat all these calories, just you've these calories, you just you've got and have a balance . i got to try and have a balance. i like say, have balance and like to say, have a balance and watch portion sizes. that's watch your portion sizes. that's the well. you put the thing as well. if you put all everything your plate, all everything on your plate, you this is only going you know, this is not only going to so very soft, but to make you so very soft, but also going pile on the also it's going to pile on the pounds. oh, wow. they go, i will just be tearing my way through christmas dinner. so i will, i will. and also as well see, i absolutely appreciate sense monica and it's fantastic. and you are 100% right. but are talking and so a chronic overeater i was gonna ask you
9:48 am
and all you can eat buffet oh oh yeah he's addicted he's busy to do it is say yourself right i'm going to make some good choices today so just have all you want today so just have all you want to eat, but just not quite so much of it. can we. should we try that one. i'll try. i'm not making any promises. monica but you were trying to kind of. thank you very much. merry christmas. shopping i'll be asking you to have a lovely christmas. all right. thank you. can i take care ? bye bye. mary, can i take care? bye bye. mary, quickly go. rise i filled a pint glass and chocolate . found glass and chocolate. found something? you just had a nutritionist on screen and you told her you've got all you can eat . but i'll do it. i got to. eat. but i'll do it. i got to. oh yeah. okay. right now now , oh yeah. okay. right now now, aidan magee is as re entered the fray as they in time he's going
