11:06 am
our roots. christmas unites people in this country of all faiths and none. as we spend time with friends and, loved ones, the country slows down and we reflect on what's important to us. for many, it's time for family. the christmas story is centred around the holy family , centred around the holy family, the blessed virgin mary , who in the blessed virgin mary, who in her fiat showed us to trust in god. her husband, saint joseph, the patron saint of fathers and expectant mothers. and of course, the christ child himself, who would eventually die for our sins. the nativity story is one of mystery drama , story is one of mystery drama, scandal and hope. it's the greatest story ever told. god became man incarnate. truly god and truly man. but it's not an original story. it's actually a retelling. a retelling from genesis the beginning of time. as saint john tells us in his gospelin as saint john tells us in his gospel in the beginning was the word and the word was with god and the word was god in the nativity, the word became flesh.
11:07 am
jesus is the living word of god . christmas is also a time for gifts. and god gave the world the gift of his only begotten son. he gave us his word so that we may have eternal . there is no we may have eternal. there is no greater gift than that. so let us be thankful and rejoice in this message of . hope in a this message of. hope in a spirit of presence . may the spirit of presence. may the favours of god's uncommon presence be yours this christmas . we hope you enjoy the program . god bless and merry christmas . also . we . . also. we. your . northwest . all . of
11:08 am
11:09 am
no lord . oh oh oh, oh and no lord. oh oh oh, oh and. all. oh oh, oh. my first guest is the right reverend robert barron. he is an american roman catholic bishop and founder of the word on fire ministries . bishop on fire ministries. bishop barron, i'd like for you to talk to us about the christian virtue of hope because at christmas , of hope because at christmas, talking about the birth of christ and how brings people hope. we don't see thomas a in our churches that hold. is the longing of the will word some good of it's possible but . it's good of it's possible but. it's very there. so we long for certain goods. but some of them are pretty easy to attain. they're possible. not arduous, but hope is ordered toward a good that is possible but difficult to attain . and then difficult to attain. and then the theological virtue of hope
11:10 am
is the longing of the will for god . so god is a pretty good and god. so god is a pretty good and arduous. yes because we can't constantly attain good on our own if our full and wills are the problem our wills are not the problem our wills are not the solution. we wheel our way to god . and so we hold we long to god. and so we hold we long for arduous good of attaining god . and we're relying upon the god. and we're relying upon the power of god. so it's a kind of the century of the ego, i think all of the theological virtues that effect the dissenter, the ego. i've spent my not about me anymore. it's not about my self—assertion. it's about ordering my life toward god, and trusting that god can bring me to this good , that i can't to this good, that i can't possibly attain myself . i mean, possibly attain myself. i mean, that's the theological you would hope. would you say there's an increased for the message of hope? and is that what your apostolate is centred on? i think hope is always something thatis think hope is always something that is deep of the human heart because all know the implicitly
11:11 am
or explicitly that we cannot become happy through own efforts that no worldly good can satisfy the of the heart. it's the central element is , the central central element is, the central tension , drama of human life, tension, drama of human life, much poetry, art and literature comes in that we have an orientation and toward doing that we can't possibly attain on our own. and so there's that the centring process . and so i would centring process. and so i would say it's behind every great work of art is behind every great human aspiration is something like hope. because what life is just nothing but grim finality and grim darkness . why would you and grim darkness. why would you bother producing a work of . so bother producing a work of. so even some of this is a an atheist, but yet they produce works of art that's coming from very place in us. that's longing for a fulfilment that we cannot attain on our own. and to live in that paradoxical space. that's the space of and it's we're deep down. we all want
11:12 am
live and all need to live. we're seeing a number of high profile conversions to catholicism, this yean conversions to catholicism, this year, shy labus was one of them . he talks about forgiveness in his interview with you. could you elaborate on that a little bit? that's part of the breakthrough of grace in his case, i think was he was feeling forgiven , despite what he forgiven, despite what he admitted were all of sin. the dysfunction in life with few of the media ation of some wonderful people . and i knew wonderful people. and i knew them personally. these these captors friars out in california through the mediation of those good brothers. he found divine forgiveness and that's what salvation consistent you know allowing to be found . there's allowing to be found. there's something i talk about a lot, you know, you talk about who i think the bible. it's not the story of our quest for god. i mean, that's in all the spirit the world. every every book on the world. every every book on the shelf in the bookstores about, you know, the human quest for god . the bible is not about for god. the bible is not about that. it is not about our quest for god. it's god relentlessly
11:13 am
coming after us, seeking us. and so the virtue of hope, if you want, is just the opening of the heart to allow to be forgiven , heart to allow to be forgiven, accepting fact that we've been accepted, even though we're unacceptable and might be waited state that and i do think you're right the child of from that and that's what salvation really consists. i think a lot of younger can relate to that message and seems to me that beauty is attracting to the church. we're firmly in of the most beautiful churches in the country and of course, the transcendental beauty in particular supposed direct particular is supposed to direct all something greater all gaze to something greater than direct gaze towards than to direct our gaze towards god . is that not the case? all god. is that not the case? all three function that way. truth good beauty. well, i think good and beauty. well, i think especially today , beautiful eyes especially today, beautiful eyes has a special power because we're resistant to truth and good. we're resistant to truth and good . you know, we're very good. you know, we're very postmodern, very so. we tend to be , you know, a little tell me be, you know, a little tell me where to begin or what to do with the beautiful just kind of
11:14 am
shines . you know, there is just shines. you know, there is just look at that very low picture . look at that very low picture. just look at this nancy pell and. it awakens that longing . and. it awakens that longing. the wings begin to expand. it's like, can't help it. and so the number of people have been converted the centuries by beautiful places . things i converted the centuries by beautiful places. things i think is very interesting at a place charlotte cathedral, which is my favourite location , planet favourite location, planet earth, i think the evangelical power who places that because it's if god beginning the awakening of the soul and this really all comes down again to hopeisit really all comes down again to hope is it ordering toward arduous good that we can attain we argue is in question being the transcendent union of god. and so is indeed tied to you . and so is indeed tied to you. excellency, thank you very much for joining us. excellency, thank you very much for joining us . merry christmas. forjoining us. merry christmas. that was bishop barron . my next that was bishop barron. my next guest is dr. gavin ashenden, a roman catholic convert , former roman catholic convert, former chaplain to her late majesty the
11:15 am
queen. dr. ashenden . we have a queen. dr. ashenden. we have a war in europe . politics is in war in europe. politics is in turmoil. we're in the midst of a cost of living crisis. a lot of people aren't necessarily feeling very hopeful right now. a lot of people aren't even christian. why should they feel hopeful at christmas? well, i think there are two stories going on there's always a going on on the there's always a public, international and social story you the story. and to tell you the truth, for most of history been pretty something gets pretty bleak. something gets into human beings that makes them with another. them regress with one another. but more and human but there's a more and human story . and the wonderful thing story. and the wonderful thing about christmas is that our own personal story can get changed against changed. because in asking where we came from, we discover god made us. god loves , us. god keeps us. and wants to change our lives. so the real hopeis change our lives. so the real hope is that our lives get touched and changed and they can be. also, a lot of people go to church normally on a sunday. why should they turn up to church, especially christmas? well, it's a bit the image i always have of human beings is rather a silly
11:16 am
one, but it's like it's like a plug one, but it's like it's like a plug outside a socket. we we all we all off electricity we all live off electricity anyway. so need to plug anyway. so you need to plug yourself into the source of the power and the energy and, and surprisingly enough , that's what surprisingly enough, that's what churches are. they're the socket . we go there to attach ourselves, to god to allow god, to put part of himself into us. you can do it a bit at home and it's not wholly unsuccessful , it's not wholly unsuccessful, but you might as well go where the juice is most powerful. i like the analogy. right now we're in one of the most beautiful churches in the country famous the country, famous for the traditional mass. of young traditional mass. a lot of young people to be attracted to traditional christian worship and traditional latin masses. do you think that might be? well think because . for between think it's because. for between 50 and 100 years, it's a slow cultural change. we've been dumbing human beings have , too. dumbing human beings have, too. capacities inside . we like both capacities inside. we like both intimacy and or and for quite a long time. the 19th century particularly was period of awe and people got fed up it and
11:17 am
they wanted intimacy . and so they wanted intimacy. and so therapy entertainment, romantic love, that's all the stuff of intimacy. but a bit like sugar, you can get a bit too much of it and grow fat and people begun to realise they're missing or they want. and i think that's where god both as god in god comes both as intimacy, jesus nobody intimacy, because jesus nobody is no aspect of god is more intimate than jesus. but they become he comes as or as well. and the great danger with religion is it can turn into entertainment. so people are quite rightly suspicious of that and need a bit of awe in and they need a bit of awe in their somewhere like this in their and somewhere like this in particularly latin mass particularly in the latin mass and i have to say, the catholic church, that's where it's to be found its highest found at. it's at its highest octane . now, the queen died this octane. now, the queen died this year and in her last address , year and in her last address, she spoke about her bedrock of faith and how that was important her. faith and how that was important hen do faith and how that was important her. do you think it's important for us and recognise for us remember and recognise our christian roots as a nation. it's a very complicated question because we live poised between the possibility of a presidency
11:18 am
and a monarchy. and one of the things a monarchy does is it keeps the presidents out. and that's because they deal in only power. and the interesting thing , a monarchy is it has its riddled with christianity , which riddled with christianity, which means it's riddled with hope and love and forgiveness , compassion love and forgiveness, compassion as part of its dna. it would be very thing indeed if a monarch didn't christian faith with christian faith and make sense of the whole thing. i think that's one of the reasons why the queen was so deeply loved and revered. it was it was an intimate thing as much as an aesthetic thing and a political thing. it's essential that the monarch a monarch in country has a christian faith order to validate the concept of monarchy . well, that leads me to the next which was how next question, which was how important majesty important faith to her majesty and, is it to the and, how important is it to the king? taught to pray by king? she was taught to pray by her all parents teach her parents. all parents teach your children to pray. they need it. it's a way giving them. it. it's a way of giving them. a firm foundation. her life to experience a number of very serious crises. it was one point i'm sure everyone remembers when the monarchy nearly fell apart
11:19 am
under you can't take under leadership. you can't take anything the way in anything for granted. the way in which , she prayed to, god which, she prayed to, god related to god experienced . she related to god experienced. she had a great relationship with dr. billy graham, who came across evangel , the english across to evangel, the english in the 1970s, much their surprise and horror . she was surprise and horror. she was very switched on with god. it was one of the reasons, i think, why eyes twinkled. and she smiles so broadly and people responded by loving. it was very important. you can see when someone's plugged into god, they twinkle . amen. thank you very twinkle. amen. thank you very much . the birth of jesus much. the birth of jesus foretold . and in the six months, foretold. and in the six months, the angel gabriel was sent from god unto a city of galilee named , nazareth to a virgin spouse, to a man whose name was joseph of the house of david and the virgin's name was mary. and the angel came on to her and said, hail thou art highly favoured the lord is with the blessed art thou among women . and when she thou among women. and when she saw him, she was troubled . a saw him, she was troubled. a saying and cast in her mind,
11:20 am
what manner of salutation that should be? and the angel said onto her fear , mary, for thou onto her fear, mary, for thou hast found with god and behold you shall conceive in thy will and bring forth a son and his name. be jesus. and bring forth a son and his name. be jesus . oh oh. looking name. be jesus. oh oh. looking ahead to today's weather , the uk ahead to today's weather, the uk is looking mild, but windy with sunny spells and showery , more sunny spells and showery, more persistent in the south—east. let's take a look at the details. taking a closer look and starting off in the southwest here, we can expect frequent blustery showers, especially across cornwall . especially across cornwall. there's some sunny spells in between and highs around 12 celsius. meanwhile spell, a persistent rain is set to push across southeastern england as we head towards lunchtime turning heaviest around kent and suffolk . heading back to the suffolk. heading back to the west and across wales, we can also expect a scattering of showers. eastern parts have greatest chance of staying dry .
11:21 am
greatest chance of staying dry. a dry picture for the west midlands . few showers will edge midlands. few showers will edge in during the afternoon , but for in during the afternoon, but for many it will be dry with bright and sunny spells blustery but relatively mild looking across north—east england . and here north—east england. and here they'll be something of a mixed bag around yorkshire and lincolnshire be mostly dry with sunny spells , although showers sunny spells, although showers will likely form further north. also, some showery rain for southern scotland this lunchtime. dry air for a time further north, but colder will feed in bringing sleet and snow showers later in the day . showers later in the day. meanwhile, across northern ireland it will turn pretty wet as we head the afternoon as a band of rain pushes south eastwards with some heavier bus and blustery winds. the changeable continues through the end of the day with showery rain for many and snow showers for scotland. and that is how the weather is shaping for your christmas day
11:25 am

oh oh. oh, oh by . the oh oh, oh by. the oh lawns. oh oh oh. welcome back. my next guest is millbank emeritus professor of theology and religious studies at the university of nottingham .john at the university of nottingham . john milbank. merry christmas . merry christmas to you too. i'd like to talk to you about claus or father or saint nicholas . of course one should. nicholas. of course one should. can you give me a bit of his background? who is the saint nicholas? well so nicholas was bishop myra in the third, fourth
11:28 am
century. and he's well known for many remarkable miracles, including raising children from the dead , and notably giving in the dead, and notably giving in secret . dowries to three girls secret. dowries to three girls who were otherwise going go into prostitution . so that's a source prostitution. so that's a source , him being linked with gift giving and his eventual evolution via dutch into santa claus rights. and we'll get to the gift giving. yes, the european folklore. but to lot of people, santa claus is a make figure. something tell our children to give them a bit hope and a bit of magic. is there anything wrong with that? absolute nothing wrong with that whatsoever . on the contrary, whatsoever. on the contrary, i would argue it's not so much that deceiving children as that we're telling the truth, that these presents derive really
11:29 am
above where need mediators . they above where need mediators. they come from this kind of subject , come from this kind of subject, semi—divine or saint like figure who stands for heaven . so what who stands for heaven. so what we're really telling ourselves as a child who is an inner and this reception of gifts from secret unknown source is reality. and this completely fits with the christian story i think i quite like that angle because in my monologue i talked about gifts being the grace from god. but you're talking about it being the invocation of the saints. i quite like that . yes. saints. i quite like that. yes. no, i mean in heaven in general and in sense, it is the children that are the gifts under a unked that are the gifts under a linked the heavenly with the ancestors, with saints with god . and you can say that after they are initiated , they then they are initiated, they then know that father christmas isn't real. but in a they then discover a reality of god. but
11:30 am
when the babies and innocence, they know it a much more direct way. and jesus himself a baby. so obviously jesus would have believed in father christmas. you might put it that way. i mean, i it's also important to realise father christmas is a hybnd realise father christmas is a hybrid . yes. saint nicholas. hybrid. yes. saint nicholas. he's also derived from a lord of misrule figure who stands symbolically for christmas as such. and again, you might say that's very pagan, but i think actually it's the greatest misrule, the greatest disturbance all. you know, god has become a baby and abolish these distinctions between us, including the barrier between aduu including the barrier between adult and children. i think who, you know, worry that really pagan he'll say you know how high it's really pagan . a high it's really pagan. a completely wrong. it's much the pagan point to the christian and
11:31 am
you might say you know it was always a festival about the victory of light over dark in the in the middle of winter. but christian is adding something more. it's saying there's something good about the dark you know that god created it's he descends into creation he descends into darkness into being a baby. he he human suffering . and so the message is suffering. and so the message is that kind of like out of the seed of darkness itself comes the light. right. and a lot of people talk about this pagan aspect of christmas that it's actually just a winter solstice celebration. yeah. well that's that's garbage. and in fact, it's in horrendously linked to, you know , to the date of you know, to the date of conception of christ. and that may may have come in fact, come first. but of course , you know, first. but of course, you know, the church knew what they were doing. they knew it merged with the winter solstice sun . one can
11:32 am
the winter solstice sun. one can see that as type illogical. it's perfectly appropriate to you know, this is part of the mystery and the symbolism within nature. but you know, in a fallen , everything dies. but fallen, everything dies. but it's reborn . so you know, we it's reborn. so you know, we should embrace all that nature, symbolism . people always did. symbolism. people always did. they always had boughs of holly. it's not true that the victorians invented they reinvented it, but just always been a family festival on and off, you know . a matter of off, you know. a matter of a radical exchange of gifts, a sense that this is a time where everything, his gift, everything is, is his generosity . and is, is his generosity. and that's the very of this christian , you know, meaning of christian, you know, meaning of christmas, you know, if you like the incarnation is integrity. it's about the unity of spirits of matter. and it's something
11:33 am
rising below as much as something coming from from . so something coming from from. so the more christian you , the more the more christian you, the more pagan you are, as i think chesterton must have said, you know, john milbank thank you very much for your you catch the shepherds and the angels and they run same country shepherd abiding in the field keeping over their flock by night and the angel as the lord came upon them and the glorious day lord shone about them and they were so afraid and the angel said unto them, fear for behold. i bnng unto them, fear for behold. i bring you good tidings of great joy , bring you good tidings of great joy , which shall be a sign to joy, which shall be a sign to all people for unto you is born this day in the city of david, a saviour , which is christ, the saviour, which is christ, the lord . and this shall be a sign lord. and this shall be a sign unto you, ye shall find the babe wrapped in the swaddling clothes lying in the manger. oh
11:34 am
wrapped in the swaddling clothes lying in the manger . oh join me lying in the manger. oh join me every sunday at 6 pm. for glory meets exclusive interviews. i'll be finding out who are politicians , really are and what politicians, really are and what they really think. it's something that you would never want anyone to suffer. i didn't know what channels they were. b i didn't think i'd be believed. i didn't think i'd be believed. i must have worried about seven stabbed and i'm 5489 stinks was just sort of cover this up i mean that was a. join me every sunday at 6 pm. on gb news the people's channel britain's

channel 0 welcome . my next guest is rod o welcome. my next guest is rod dreher, american writer and editor of the american conservative magazine merry christmas . conservative magazine merry christmas. thank you, conservative magazine merry christmas . thank you, carl, conservative magazine merry christmas. thank you, carl, and merry christmas to you as well. you are an orthodox convert . in
11:38 am
you are an orthodox convert. in what ways do you celebrate christmas differently now to what you did before orthodox christians follow a fast a fairly strict in the weeks up to the nativity . so from the nativity. so from mid—november we have been fasting from meat fasting from dairy . this is such an important dairy. this is such an important for me spiritually . it taught me for me spiritually. it taught me that in order to prepare for the birth of christ and the joy of the birth of christ, we needed to be with sacrifice before i celebrated christmas. like everybody else does in our culture. you know, it's a whole month of feasting on candies and cakes and hot chocolate, things like that . and that's all fine. like that. and that's all fine. but when became orthodox and suddenly to spend the month of december fast , it made the joy december fast, it made the joy of christmas and the 12 days of christmas afterwards all that much more intense and meaningful. it helped me
11:39 am
understand that there is a reason that christmas is feast. you can't really understand the meaning of the feast without fasted. first, learning how to celebrate it in the traditional way, and perhaps anglicans do this as well . really opened up this as well. really opened up my heart and my mind to the real beauty of christmas and beyond the beauty, the deep meaning of christmas and of the sacred time of christmas . you know, orthodox of christmas. you know, orthodox christians like traditional christians like traditional christians and other liturgical churches , we consecrate and time churches, we consecrate and time in a special a way that has been forgotten . this post—christian forgotten. this post—christian culture . it's a really culture. it's a really countercultural thing and it has helped me so much in my own walk with christ to learn how to do this and learn how, frankly, how to how to observe the season . to how to observe the season. our ancestors , generations upon our ancestors, generations upon generations ago did . i like the generations ago did. i like the idea of demonstrating sacred time at christmas all that any other intricacies into how you
11:40 am
celebrate christmas as a family or celebrate it passed me well calvin this year is to be a pretty tragic christmas for me i'm sorry to say that. earlier this year, my wife filed for divorce and it's a painful thing. i'm now living in europe. my thing. i'm now living in europe. my family is on the other side , my family is on the other side, the ocean. my older son is to fly over to spend christmas with me and we are going to be meditating on loss. frankly, my son and, i will be surrounded by friends. thank god good christian friends. we will go church, but we will also hold fast to. the truth that christ is here. christ is christ must be glorified in our lives, and we will pray also for a better a, better year to come . i should a, better year to come. i should say also, calvin, that , you say also, calvin, that, you know, this this year has taught me this year of loss has taught me this year of loss has taught me the meaning of suffering , and me the meaning of suffering, and that for all christians , that for all christians, suffering is part of our lives it's not something to be afraid
11:41 am
of. certainly something to be sought. but god is present with us, even we suffer. i went to bethlehem earlier this year. i was also shown something that most pilgrims to bethlehem don't get to see . i was taken into get to see. i was taken into a greek orthodox monastery and shown the of the holy innocents the children massacre aired by king herod , who wanted to kill king herod, who wanted to kill the christ child. christ was the christ child was a threat to his power . i christ child was a threat to his power. i asked christ child was a threat to his power . i asked the woman showing power. i asked the woman showing me this and said, how do we know this is the holiness since bones? and she said that they were discovered when saint helena came there in the fourth century. so whether are the bones of the holy innocents or not, the bones of children. and they help us. that even joy is not. it also comes with great suffering. my and i are living through that this year with the dissolution of our family, but it doesn't dim the joy . rather

it doesn't dim the joy. rather it doesn't dim the joy. rather it deepens it and makes it makes more intense and i am not giving up in any way on the joy of christmas. it'sjust up in any way on the joy of christmas. it's just going to have to be celebrated in a different this year. and i know a lot of your viewers, too, to be honest, are suffering through hard times. i want to say them, i know what this is like , but i know what this is like, but hold jesus christ. our hold fast to jesus christ. our lord is with us. he came us in the dead of winter and he will be with us forever. i think perfectly encapsulates christmas . we go through trials and tribulations , life suffering, tribulations, life suffering, but the message of christmas is one of hope in christ with us throughout all of that suffering is an amen and merry christmas. the jesus and it came the birth of jesus and it came to pass in those days that there went out a decree from , caesar went out a decree from, caesar augustus, that all the world should be taxed . and this taxing should be taxed. and this taxing was first made inside irenaeus was first made inside irenaeus was governor syria and all went to be taxed everyone into his own city and joseph went to be taxed. he went up from galilee,
11:43 am
out of the city of nazareth into , judea unto the city of which is called bethlehem , because he is called bethlehem, because he was of the and lineage of david to be taxed with mary his espoused wife being great to the child. and so was that while they were there the days were accomplished that she be delivered and she brought forth her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in there was no room for them in the end. oh boy. oh it's nice . the end. oh boy. oh it's nice. to realise . oh . and some toys to realise. oh. and some toys. oh, oh your name . is.

to realise. oh. and some toys. oh, oh your name . is . and oh, oh your name. is. and. oh oh toscanini . you . restored toscanini. you. restored restored . come back to space restored. come back to space sitting on here for this morning . oh um . no . uh sitting on here for this morning .ohum.no.uh. . oh um. no. uh. oh oh, i see this. . oh um. no. uh. oh oh, i see this . very. . oh um. no. uh. oh oh, i see this . very . oh dear boy. may this. very. oh dear boy. may. 25 . oh
11:45 am
this. very. oh dear boy. may. 25. oh all time . my next guest is sir all time. my next guest is sir desmond , conservative politician desmond, conservative politician , anglican. so sir desmond, you became somewhat of a hero during the lockdowns . did your faith the lockdowns. did your faith impact your politics and your decisions at the time? i think so i think they informed my politics all times in that, you know, i have certain values which i believe are biblically based. i don't test particular political decisions for theological soundness. it's just that i, i values, which i believe are based and i will pursue issues , causes and behave pursue issues, causes and behave in a certain way because i have those views in terms of lockdown

felt very strongly that people should not be from having sacraments of the church and be able to go to church and be able to exercise individual liberty and make an assessment for as to what risks they were prepared to take. personal responsibility. what an old fashioned thought. you mentioned the importance of individual liberty and that was one of your calls to campaign the lockdowns and throughout the pandemic. but people seem to use it as a derogatory term these days. why do you think that might well, think might be? well, i think certainly sense of lockdown certainly the sense of lockdown , you know, there's a collective good and a collective view. and if liberty is out spreading if you liberty is out spreading the disease, then i can understand people saying, well, your liberty is less important than the common good . and i than the common good. and i think there is this question of balance. if i thought that my liberties were making the situation worse , spreading the situation worse, spreading the disease, then would have taken a different view. i think that i was underwhelmed by the medical evidence and the case for
11:47 am
lockdown was put to us. i think it was a disaster. i think it did vastly more harm than it would otherwise have done. but hey, if the disease had been young people have been killing . young people have been killing. i i might have taken a different view if it's just the way that things came about and fell out ultimately i would always provide prize, individual liberty over the collective good . but clearly there has to be some balance between those two. and we now know that are on the right side of this in terms of the scientific data backs your argument all you should how you shouldn't forgiveness to people who are wrong and you at the time. oh well i'm frankly it's water a duck's back i'm the reality is if you are politics you have to have a skin because will always put the worst possible interpreted nation on your actions and denounce you
11:48 am
all sorts of things that you've not done or not said i haven't been. not done or not said i haven't been . i know that some been. i know that some politicians keep a little, little notebook of all the all the people they need to back at. but i am i'm immune that i'm a christian i believe forgiveness. your party seems to be split at the moment between liberal conservatives and social conservatives. where would you fall within that bracket? well, i've moved between two seamlessly and been in camp for some and then the other and move back again . there's a difficulty back again. there's a difficulty there , the sense that the there, the sense that the conservative party has a tradition for order and tradition for order and tradition itself and equally a something that we imported largely from the whigs and from the national liberals, a more liberal attitude and, i'm afraid. i'm probably like colleagues. it's difficult to pin down. i move between the two
11:49 am
wars. the reason ask is because i think within the church we're seeing younger people more attracted to tradition, such as the place that the beautiful we're filming in today and. i think might be seeing think we might be seeing a similar in politics that similar thing in politics that young be young people seem to be attracted to the social attracted more to the social conservative side of things than attracted more to the social con traditionalde of things than attracted more to the social con traditional values. iings than attracted more to the social con traditional values. are; than attracted more to the social con traditional values. are you n the traditional values. are you seeing certainly seeing this? i've certainly found in in this last year think i've done 11 university visits this year and certainly i found that this is a straw element of , that social conservatism . but , that social conservatism. but i wouldn't overstated i think that certainly looking at my own children have much more liberal and i'm comfortable with that . and i'm comfortable with that. my and i'm comfortable with that. my own tastes certainly in religion is , as is for the more religion is, as is for the more traditional , religion is, as is for the more traditional, i religion is, as is for the more traditional , i prefer the prayer traditional, i prefer the prayer book than the modern services . book than the modern services. and i'm sure it doesn't matter the almighty, but it does matter to me what you came to college since stephen's house. i want to

ask you where we fell on the social divide in terms of christmas . where do you get christmas. where do you get hope? the those that weight upon the lord shall renew their strength . they shall run , not strength. they shall run, not grow weary. it's only in a belief , in an grow weary. it's only in a belief, in an eternal grow weary. it's only in a belief , in an eternal power belief, in an eternal power outside yourself that informs you with the hope that things will get better. but . your will get better. but. your salvation is in hands of god and that a you know, a reassurance which can exist . people who do which can exist. people who do not you do not believe that. and they have a much weary existence simply because they don't that hope to hold on it. now marx called it opiate. and we need this opiate just to get us through the misery of, this life but that doesn't constitute a it may in certain respects be true,

but during a night of pain you long for the dawn that's new proof that the dawn is not going to come . the visit of the wise to come. the visit of the wise man . now, when jesus was born in man. now, when jesus was born in bethlehem of judea, in the days of herod king, the hold came wise men from the east to jerusalem saying, where is he that? is born king of the jews . that? is born king of the jews. we have seen his star in the east and i come to worship him when herod the king had heard these things , he was troubled in these things, he was troubled in old jerusalem with him . then old jerusalem with him. then herod, when he had privilege called the wise men , inquired of called the wise men, inquired of them diligently . time the star them diligently. time the star appeared , and he sent them to appeared, and he sent them to and said go and search diligently for the child. and when you have found him, bring word again. the time may come worship him. also when they heard the king, they departed
