3:06 am
how hard i'd worked on getting the corners perfect and all the gaps. take down didn't exactly improve my mood. but then something magical happened. the thank started for the first time, totally unprovoked . each time, totally unprovoked. each of my five children from the five to the 13 year old thanked each other for their secret santa presence and then came and did the same to the mother and i with a hug. i say magical because that might the effect but cause is something but their cause is something very much more in reality . if very much more in reality. if i could sum up the one bit of parenting advice that would make not just children ever thing better, it would be teaching kids to say thank. better, it would be teaching kids to say thank . apart from kids to say thank. apart from littering nothing, winds me up more as this breach of etiquette as . those families unlucky as. those families unlucky enough to go on holiday with us can attest. as i shamelessly take over the parental responsible in this matter, if they're failing with the task, it's a habit that to be ingrained from the very get go
3:07 am
with constant reminders because as we move out into the world, it affects our entire outlook indeedit it affects our entire outlook indeed it establishes our very relationship with the world without gratitude. is entitlement and whilst that may work well for the entitled it has an adverse effect on those around them people and resources being just things to be used up and discarded once they've got what they wanted . on the other what they wanted. on the other hand, expressing is the recognition of our connection to each other that we are dependent on one another, that we need each other. it's a recognition of what we've got , what we've of what we've got, what we've been given, and how we got it, even if well . if you're even if well. if you're spiritually expressing gratitude , your particular deity is the recognition for many blessings that surround us. blessings that we might otherwise take for granted . now i recognise there granted. now i recognise there are many out there in the world even many of you who are watching today who might not be
3:08 am
feeling particularly blessed right now. hopefully it's for something passing you have a stomach ache or early hangover from overindulging. you might be exhausted from dealing with a family member , but i'm sure that family member, but i'm sure that you can still something to be grateful for . and here i am grateful for. and here i am working on christmas , but i'm working on christmas, but i'm thankful for a job that i love. i'm thankful for being given a voice. i'm thankful for health and a wonderful family who are healthy. i'm thankful my children who woke up today and found presents tree . found presents under the tree. i'm thankful to the team here. also working on christmas day . also working on christmas day. create a fun few hours for us. mark rebecca, sophia, jack , mark rebecca, sophia, jack, maria, steve, mark and megan directing karl in social media. tatyana, who has been working 14 hour shifts , bringing us the hour shifts, bringing us the news of last couple of days. there's a couple of people and monitors who i don't actually what they do security. anyway the point is and also thank you to our great panellists i guess but i'm particularly thankful because know how hard this of
3:09 am
because i know how hard this of year can be, particularly for some, because perhaps you have issues with your health. perhaps you've lost ones, perhaps you've not had the opportunity yet to find new loved ones. but i just want you to know that you to very, very much . this phrase is very, very much. this phrase is bandied about a lot. but putting aside the cynicism gb news is a family now . there are family now. there are disagreements that have shouting . mistakes are made. there are people you might not normally comment contact with. but there's also loyalty and laughter and compromise . as we laughter and compromise. as we have become enmeshed in one another's lives. so a big thank you for joining another's lives. so a big thank you forjoining us and for you for joining us and for allowing us into your lives. now let's have some fun . right, let's have some fun. right, let's have some fun. right, let's go to my panel now for some christmas thoughts . some christmas thoughts. political commentator david oldroyd bolt and the tv personality and entrepreneur ryan mark parsons are both here with me . hello. author emma wolf
3:10 am
with me. hello. author emma wolf will be us shortly as well. ryan moore , it's christmas day. moore, it's christmas day. i christmas what you did . merry christmas what you did. merry christmas. why are you here .7 christmas. why are you here? know you've got a jumper on though. i'm it festive i've got the i've got the christmas spirit with me getting energy here but i've a very chilled christmas so i'm feeling very stuffed. i've had a lot of christmas lunch, but ready to let it all out . tonight's panel, let it all out. tonight's panel, but not the foods . my opinions. but not the foods. my opinions. i appreciate that , david. i mean i appreciate that, david. i mean , it's nice to see you dressed in a very relaxed manner for christmas day . well, you know , christmas day. well, you know, velvet isn't the usual thing to wear on political news panel. i too, am like you, grateful for the opportunity to be head grateful for the opportunity to have a voice for so don't and hopefully to speak for those people who feel that they have something to say but haven't the medium of expressing it. and i'm also grateful that there are in fact very, very people driving around the streets of london today. so it's probably the
3:11 am
easiest ride i've ever had easiest cab ride i've ever had to get ahead. and thank you to the team for organising. ryan mars has lots of food and mars has been lots of food and it makes realise that we are we're living in a terribly difficult economic time , difficult economic time, terribly difficult global financial times. it is still possible with just a few good friends, family and a decent bird . the oven to have the most bird. the oven to have the most wonderful time. absolutely. and right now do agree with me what i was saying about tea. i mean, you seem too young to have children. surely unless you well know. well, i'm 22, but not necessarily kids yet. not quite yet. but what do you think about that? when you do have children, are you going to teach them the pleases and? thank you's? it's that top of the list. yes, absolutely. i'm for all etiquettes and well, etiquette in general. and i think manners around table is so important . around table is so important. and i love the traditions that we have at christmas in this country. and i'm all for being a bastion, for. country. and i'm all for being a bastion, for . so absolutely when bastion, for. so absolutely when ihave bastion, for. so absolutely when i have children will be learning
3:12 am
every single detail when it comes to etiquette at christmas time . and david, you said you time. and david, you said you had a do you have a turkey? we did, thankfully , with a dear did, thankfully, with a dear friends in london today. all of us who here and don't have the to go after families. so we got together and had probably the most enormous turkey i've ever seen in my life. so i'd to thank my host, mr. jp loveland. that is interesting. what you said about manners, and i hope that with minister rishi sunak with prime minister rishi sunak in charge, he should remember his old motto manners make us men . and perhaps can lead men. and perhaps you can lead a for gratitude for hospitality, for gratitude for hospitality, for good courtesy is something i have noticed. i'm afraid over the past few years that that seems to have fallen off a bit among each other. and you know, for instance, you go in a shop and the shop assistants on the phone there's no please all thank you you're being asked for payment for it it's payment or thank for it it's a sort of yeah that's what you give us now when people are interacting transport, interacting in public transport, particularly moment particularly when is the moment we general strike in all
3:13 am
we have a general strike in all but and transport is but name and public transport is hard come people don't hard to come by people don't have think if we have their post. i think if we were to try as our general new year's resolution for the nation to bring back and good to bring back courtesy and good humour of adversity, to bring back courtesy and good hthinkr of adversity, to bring back courtesy and good hthink that of adversity, to bring back courtesy and good hthink that the of adversity, to bring back courtesy and good hthink that the nation adversity, to bring back courtesy and good hthink that the nation mightity, to bring back courtesy and good hthink that the nation might be i think that the nation might be a little happier during difficult times absolutely ball and with saying and let's start with just saying thank bus driver thank you to the bus driver that's where it seems to be that seems the most thing that seems to be the most thing that you teaching you could do. and teaching everybody to do that might sort of spread outwards i guess is the idea. and did you have a right smile did you what would you get for christmas? did you get that jumper for christmas? is now recycled this is that now i've recycled this jumper. get jumper. actually, i didn't get the year but now jumper. actually, i didn't get the very year but now jumper. actually, i didn't get the very grateful.ear but now jumper. actually, i didn't get the very grateful. got but now jumper. actually, i didn't get the very grateful. got ajt now jumper. actually, i didn't get the very grateful. got a few>w i'm very grateful. got a few gifts, but also i was very grateful for the company and i think that's what people need to remember as well. it's not just the material goods, it's about spending quality time with family might not family that you might not otherwise and christmas day otherwise get. and christmas day is a time when you can all come together, whether it's friends, family in london, family, if you live in london, you're going home or or wherever you're going home or or wherever
3:14 am
you are and whatever you're doing. and i think christmas day is a time for bringing people together sharing those memories and just really having a time. and i've done all of that. so i'm very, very content. i got to be right. mark that was the answer of someone who got some pretty rubbish presents that's i say so i'm just thankful to be no matter you got you didn't get what you wanted . i got some what you wanted. i got some socks i got a satsuma . you got socks i got a satsuma. you got i'm sorry i'm and what we have what about you david? did you get anything good? yeah right. i didn't know. i was given a large selection of which is always useful in a crisis. selection of which is always useful in a crisis . and useful in a crisis. and miniatures . yes, yes. we had miniatures. yes, yes. we had lucky dip miniatures, which was probably the funniest christmas fred i've ever known. how posh are your friends? not terribly . are your friends? not terribly. it was just something i bought at an auction. not a puppy. we all chocolates and my favourite thing as ever is a great books. i'll never be if i'm given books. so it a good christmas all round . and i must say one of
3:15 am
all round. and i must say one of the things for which i'm really thankful is the wonderful music that i was able to hear when i went to church at the branch to norwich this morning think norwich or this morning i think for me, christmas simply not christmas without beginning by celebrating the birth of jesus christ. remember why it is christ. and remember why it is that billions of people throughout history have celebrated do celebrate wills, continue celebrate this wonderful festival. so time you up this morning then. oh terribly early. 930, thankfully catholic church is reasonable about these things and we don't have till 11 am. yeah, have to start till 11 am. yeah, way up at i'm hardcore way up at 615. i'm hardcore little . oh that's the children little. oh that's the children for you . lucky not to have for you. lucky not to have children yet. yeah. and yeah. brian, did you to? did brian, what did you go to? did go to church? no i was planning on leaving . well, i was try. i on leaving. well, i was try. i did try. i did try. i was so bad with the presence to see everything was so last minute. i've been going out every day, getting quite drunk with friends and i know that's not a good excuse . tis the season to be excuse. tis the season to be jolly. this way. exactly. yes. well dangling this carrot in front of me friends, alcohol,
3:16 am
friends, alcohol. late nicely the club at four. i am so i have been terrible this year and was wrapping last minute so i didn't get to go to church but next yeari get to go to church but next year i will. okay good. and yes, the wrapping i if i, i can't do any more wrapping if you can imagine what it's like wrapping for five children. it has been 48 hours absolute total pain 48 hours of absolute total pain as you. yes. and so you guys have had your lot and you had a big lunch as well. well grandma, did you sort of get turkey as well? is that part of your tradition. yes, i had a turkey, but i wasn't involved in any of the preparation and i kind of just to the house while just chosen to the house while i sat down. that's why you both so relax . done, no cooking. i've relax. done, no cooking. i've done no work. my wife, it was just like i don't know if she's watching she minds me saying this but know she went back to bed then i got the chickens. bed and then i got the chickens. i didn't do turkey year i could be. they to drive for the be. do they get to drive for the kids but put the chickens onto the potato? i mean, what was
3:17 am
supen the potato? i mean, what was super, super dad, am . yeah, super, super dad, i am. yeah, well i grew up and then obviously and i bought my own presents. i'm not trying to make feel sorry for me , but at least feel sorry for me, but at least i got what i wanted. that's the important thing. and have to say it this jumper that was it wasn't this jumper that was bought the production . this bought by the production. this is of the as it going is the budget of the as it going on now you it's interesting david you seem to know rishi sunak school motto is that like a party trick can you do public school motto the land not every i could probably do the top three but the thing well sunak is interesting because it's only the second prime minister we've had in history. went to winchester , other being henry winchester, other being henry addington and, famously of whom it was said addington is to pitt , as long as london is to paddington . he was a rather paddington. he was a rather terrible failure as the prime minister . so terrible failure as the prime minister. so i hope that mr. sunak won't in his in his what would you call it, as schoolmates footsteps in that way. and of course florey at eton which they do very well,
3:18 am
they let eton flourish and perhaps occasionally that they're supposed to be running they're supposed to be running the country for the rest of as well. but you must make his medal i think is a good thing to stick by. i think it's one of those simple catch phrases that if you can live by it and of course we all are at times and we all fall off when it's a bad day and the bus is and it's raining or, you know, whatever. but fine if we can. as i said, if you can remember, courtesy and remember good humour in the face of, a little adversity, i think we'll all be rather happier 2023, 22 seems to me happier in 2023, 22 seems to me to have a rather ill year to have been a rather ill year all people afraid at the all around. people afraid at the edges. know, after two years edges. you know, after two years of lockdown of covid and of just generally feeling as though the world against us, let's go world is against us, let's go into a bit of optimism , into 23 with a bit of optimism, a bit of courtesy, and a little bit of joy in our hearts that though things are bad, they could be worse. could certainly be a lot worse. you know are not in the you know we are not in the situation of ukraine of having a neighbour trying invade us. neighbour trying to invade us. we that's trying we just have one that's trying to in fact are not to leave as in fact we are not in the situation to so many
3:19 am
around the world are. and by and large starvation of lack large of starvation of lack of water. in very fortunate water. we're in a very fortunate position be in top five position to be in the top five of nations in the world in of the nations in the world in terms of income and in terms terms of our income and in terms of economic. if we can of our economic. so if we can bear that in mind, be optimistic and. remember our good manners. say pleases and thank you's say the pleases and thank you's that better that makes everybody feel better and everybody smile . and makes everybody smile. shouldn't better country shouldn't we be a better country for i'll go with for? it you know, i'll go with that very lovely monologue right there. so we're going to go to a break now. thank you so much guys. but don't go away. we have cooking tonia buxton here cooking expert tonia buxton here and she's going to have some advice to do with your advice on what to do with your turkey leftovers. some turkey leftovers. plus some other tips .
3:22 am
3:23 am
columnist emma wolf, who has joined us now . merry christmas. joined us now. merry christmas. merry christmas day bean. let's don't talk about your join in. let's no, that's over. i'm here now , but i still got my reindeer now, but i still got my reindeer antlers. the terrible taxi . oh, antlers. the terrible taxi. oh, my gosh. and now they're going go home and give it as a present. no oh, all right. so how is your christmas day being apart from that, then? yeah, nice. nice quiet. mostly just family stuff . yeah. enjoyable. family stuff. yeah. enjoyable. when you cooking did you have someone else do it for you? if i was cooking. that would have been a no, i don't. i've never done a christmas dinner actually. what? no i've never done one. i've always been kind of, you know, i've done like helped my peel the potatoes or scrub the carrot. so that's why i run out. i don't really know. what else you do with the christmas dinner and i'm a vegetarian, which pretty dull. so i'm. so you're the one who rocks up and over. they have to whoever's has to make another emma coming. oh, my god . all emma coming. oh, my god. all they have to do is make sure
3:24 am
they have to do is make sure they don't put the potatoes right. nestled up next to the turkey. and i'm. i'm fine. and i say that's. you happy enough say that's. are you happy enough with that? yeah you get any nice. was your present nice. what was your best present this yeah i got really this year. yeah i got a really lovely i forgot to i really lovely i forgot to i really lovely silver necklace which very with didn't very pleased with it didn't live out taxi did you know i out in the taxi did you know i didn't. okay fine . well, didn't. okay fine. well, wonderful. welcome here. wonderful. well, welcome here. we a lovely chat with you we have a lovely chat with you in a second. time now for all important plagues important question which plagues all really this time of all of us, really this time of year am i going year? what on earth am i going to do with turkey? of to do with this turkey? of course not, emma. because she's vegetarian now . we've all gorged vegetarian now. we've all gorged ourselves christmas lunch. ourselves for christmas lunch. but more but there's still plenty more days the to get through. who days of the to get through. who better ask than the renowned restauranteur and gb news favourite tanya buxton? good evening, tanya . this evening evening, tanya. this evening have you? i'm very well, thank. now have you and your family had a wonderful christmas day? it looks christmassy in the background. it's very christmassy around here that if you can see. but yes, you've got a lovely place. say, i've cooked for 22 people so far and the
3:25 am
bulk of the guests and it's sounds like a terrible thing to say but they were perfect guests is my family and they all left around 6:00 which is when they've been here since 130. and i fed everybody. that's what perfect guests do. they then us to own devices is and my lot to our own devices is and my lot have just made the most awesome turkey sandwiches you'll ever know. i mean , it's an art form know. i mean, it's an art form the way we make turkey sandwiches because , you know, sandwiches because, you know, you've got the stuffing, you've got the cranberry sauce, you've got the cranberry sauce, you've got a bit potatoes, parsnips actually, mine add extra layers of both and know both. and the kind of soft cheese they put that in it. well and then they dip it into the gravy. so it's a dirty turkey sandwich. oh my gosh. dirty turkey sandwich. oh my gosh . is actually making me gosh. is actually making me hungry even though. i am cold. so but wait, wait, wait. we haven't talked about the bread. we'll talk about it. style is always use a nice slice salad of yes you have any and anything but i would have for 20 years
3:26 am
now i think yeah it's going to be that definite. they have to do that. how long can they keep going then? surely some going then? surely there's some point sandwiches point where. turkey sandwiches can sick. that's can get slightly sick. that's one point, especially . it's not one point, especially. it's not just it's not just the turkey that sometimes have do you ever do the stuffing if do things that the stuffing if you if you make own you make because if you make own stuffing up with stuffing in you end up with we've got to trace the stuffing here now what i'm going to do is i'm going pasta sauce i'm going to make pasta sauce with is absolutely with it, which is absolutely delicious . you just kind of take delicious. you just kind of take it a great idea because i got it as a great idea because i got my wrong with my my timings wrong with my stuffing, so it too late stuffing, so i put it too late and then we can have that. it was cooking through whilst we're eating. so this is very good. so what do you how do you do that then? what do you do to make a pasta sauce? literally, just pasta sauce? literally, you just fire and some fire up some onions and some i would add in, it's a little bit of kind of something wet lettuce and tomato sauce, chop up and tomato sauce, then chop up stuffing the sauce stuffing and throw the sauce mixture that's that's all the mixture. that's that's all the flavours in the stuffing. the stuffing. i mean, i don't know what your stuff is. you're stuffing flavours that people normally ask you about my
3:27 am
stuffing. but yeah yeah. yes that's a very fast cool question. flavoursome stuffing. you really don't need to do anything all. but if you offer stuffing, it's in place and then you don't have to add some flavours to it . but there is flavours to it. but there is nothing better. i mean there really isn't anything better than. really isn't anything better than . a turkey curry a couple of than. a turkey curry a couple of days after christmas. i mean i mean i kind of think i prefer the turkey curry than i like the roast turkey. wow i hadn't even considered such a putting those two things together. what about brussel sprouts you traditionalist . well this is the traditionalist. well this is the first year that we didn't boiled brussels sprouts. we decided to bake them so we cut them in half sort. just put some oil there, a little bit of garlic, drizzle them in olive oil and bake them in the oven. and that was much nicer than your normal boiled brussel sprouts . but then what brussel sprouts. but then what i do and this is my big secret because, i don't like the flavour of brussels sprouts. does anyone like the flavour of
3:28 am
brussels actual brussels sprouts? the actual brussels sprouts? the actual brussels sprouts? the actual brussels sprouts flavour? i mean, only eat because . mean, we only eat them because. jesus, they were his favourite. they his say yes. so i make they were his say yes. so i make pancetta which is really pancetta butter, which is really easy. just get some butter, easy. you just get some butter, you some pancetta, you you frost, some pancetta, you chop chop up some chestnuts, just pop some sage leaves and, then just kind of pound it into your butter. that softened and then just it in some greaseproof paper it the fridge and then paper put it the fridge and then you end up with this really delicious butter delicious flavour, some butter which you put on anything which you can put on anything which you can put on anything which flavour because which you flavour because that's sage in the pan yet to take over . well, obviously we've got a few more days of holiday. hopefully for some people who aren't working any cooking tips? i mean, is it now about taking it easy for the next couple of days? it or is it just like days? is it or is it just like give up, just start ordering deliveroo or whatever? no, never i've in my entire life i've never in my entire life ordered from deliveroo. so i know what you're talking about that i just you should just cook from scratch. it doesn't to be difficult. you've got things in house that you fully stocked up.
3:29 am
it's easy to make something really simple, you know, just if you've got some breast, just pan, them, put some garlic pan, fry them, put some garlic and splash of wine with a pinch of salt. just really simple things that you can don't things that you can cook. don't deliveroo is of preserved deliveroo is sort of preserved since it's full of crap and it won't taste as good if you don't make it yourself. that's the fact of the matter. that's the way it is. and what what you way it is. and what what are you going be doing for the next going to be doing for the next couple of days and so i very exciting that i think you know this exercise eating piece of news sad again mark news but i'm sad again for mark steyn on the 27th so not tomorrow the day and seven let's put it in the diary. i'm it down in the diary and i have got some apps the fantastic guests joining and we're going to call it a kind reflections and resolutions. so we're going to talk about all the rubbish that's been happening over the past few years. but we can come up past few years. but we can come up with some great solutions to how to get through it all and, how to get through it all and, how to get through it all and, how to and i'm ending on a whole happiness segment on how to make you happy. will you be

3:34 am
of insane concoctions from of those insane concoctions from a butcher where they put nine birds other . a butcher where they put nine birds other. if birds inside each other. if you're going to do something like knew is such like david, who knew is such a iconoclast up, are iconoclast? coming up, we are going a look at some going to have a look at some funny christmas don't funny christmas fails. don't anywhere .
3:37 am

3:40 am
television in house. but but television in the house. but but we did start watching 1951 we did start watching the 1951 version carol and version of christmas carol and that's lovely and the that's really lovely and the classic recommend it to classic and i recommend it to anybody. so i feel that was anybody. and so i feel that was anybody. and so i feel that was a bit of dickens and a bit of television, a bit of screen time, and it was fun as a bit of classiness. that's okay, there. so what we're not allowing the you use any ipad parenting you don't use any ipad parenting with your child no screens at all not no screens no okey dokey child number five is his best friend . that's the only way that friend. that's the only way that i can cope with that. what about you, ryan. what is it? do you manage to watch any tv today ? manage to watch any tv today? i've been trying to keep it festive. i watch. starts with the grinch. okay which is a classic. always loved that film and been watching a bit of emily in paris, which isn't so christmassy, but i'm obsessed with netflix now with that on netflix right now and then think what i was i and then i think what i was i watched a bit of james bond as well this film for the here we go i mean that's surely that's something agree something that everybody agree with watch james on with go to watch james bond on christmas proper proper christmas that is proper proper edition there. yeah it's a bit i
3:41 am
am . see have you guys watched am. see have you guys watched the white lotus? is anybody watching that? i have been heanng watching that? i have been hearing a lot about this . that's hearing a lot about this. that's fantastic. and the traitors, everybody. keep about everybody. i keep hearing about the traitors everybody saying the traitors everybody saying the as i've got to the traitors as me. i've got to do like proper binge watching. also an sas of look david season festivals i'm not saying it's not for emma or what but i think you in particular appreciate some ss rogue . well yes. you in particular appreciate some ss rogue . well yes . but the some ss rogue. well yes. but the thing is it's one of those programmes that really irritates me because they take a brilliant story with people in story with people who are in their own lives, extraordinary . their own lives, extraordinary. then load of then they are that load of extraneous never extraneous crap that never happenedin extraneous crap that never happened in order try and happened in order to try and make and cooler. it's make it sexier and cooler. it's this do keep doing this this why do you keep doing this when called entertainment? when it's called entertainment? well, know one well, i think i know this one will live television. it's will live from television. it's when the history itself so exciting it's entertaining that there's no need to add rubbish to it and give people a totally idea of they were doing . idea of what they were doing. but i agree with you on bond. there's bond that if there's got be a bond that if there isn't bond, there must be there isn't bond, there must be the great escape. and these are
3:42 am
the great escape. and these are the great escape. and these are the great british televisual traditions the great british televisual tradit you know important new think you know important for new generations stick with but no generations to stick with but no televisions in houses all screens individual screens . screens and individual screens. i agree with emma that if i had children would be no children there would be no screens least screens around, not at least until were secondary until they were in secondary school. think that they've got school. i think that they've got a at a point. oh live staring at a phone and i'm not having it. and i just i was phone and i'm not having it. and ijust i was brought phone and i'm not having it. and i just i was brought without television. i've never in television. i've never lived in a house television. and a house with television. and i don't to be it's too don't want it to be it's too easy it to become the babysitter isn't it. it be isn't it. yeah it would be a dream put two parts, a little dream to put two parts, a little one in front of a tv and, have him looked after for 2 hours by the screen. but i mean, what way? you know, it's much more fun that we've got fun to believe that we've got two on advocate for no two people on advocate for no television television. television who are television. right now and or another radio that's meant to this is my idea. bruce is very postmodern. now, next up, as promised , my panel, next up, as promised, my panel, i will discuss some funny festive fails. maybe it be people disappearing from your tv's during an interview. bit like the one we just have with danniella westbrook inside .
3:46 am
but welcome back. it's time my panel and i got into some fun christmas stories starting in ireland where a wrapping paper debacle has been unfold . excuse debacle has been unfold. excuse me , this post on twitter that me, this post on twitter that a first christmas argument was underway after . first christmas argument was underway after. his brother found the expensive wallpaper their mother had bought and used it as wrapping paper. oh, that is a massive mistake. as beautiful wrapping paper though . let's get my panel on this . . let's get my panel on this. david, is this an understandable that's wrapping paper and? that's to say that's not wallpaper. i think this is an entire for the purposes of twitter. so cynical this i know it's horrible. christmas day. absolutely my dear younger brother used to get around very well to a chocolate well by going to a chocolate shop buying a box of shop and buying a box of chocolates . then he was
3:47 am
chocolates. then while he was there, smiling and there, smiling sweetly and asking wrap all the asking if they'd wrap all the rest presents him as rest of his presents for him as well. i think this is just well. so i think this is just about the way you can possibly get around the that men can get around the fact that men can wrap properly. i know wrap presents properly. i know i'm have disagree i'm going to have to disagree with you as someone who with you there. as someone who has i i don't my has spent 40, i mean, i don't my wife do the wrapping because she just, you know, no offence, she's many brilliant she's got many brilliant qualities. getting those qualities. but getting those corners you've got corners right is you've got to get all the corner get look all about the corner all round. who's got the patients? come on. well, i do. i feel like at some level now whether they can, even though that my youngest is five, whether he's really it on board, how beautifully . also, i'd like how beautifully. also, i'd like to think that when they at photo evidence when i want to take that's really what it's all about i take the photos about so when i take the photos i when i'm getting i make sure when i'm getting unwrapping court unwrapping it they set the court so that then they look back so when that then they look back in like 34 years time they'll see those corners and think, wow , me. that's , dad really loved me. that's plan. because this change when you have children, you actually start to care about things like the corners on wrapping.
3:48 am
absolutely. well, emma, tell me, you've two year old you've got a two year old presence i really do. it's presence and i really do. it's the only that i can say proudly. i'm really good. i'm really good at presents and it is at wrapping presents and it is about corners also it's about the corners and also it's just things like getting just little things like getting the it the sellotape. you want it bunching and you really got bunching up and you really got to just cut it nicely, it, to just cut it nicely, get it, get nicely . i don't get it on nicely. i don't bother. do bother with all fibbons bother. do bother with all ribbons that. oh ribbons and things like that. oh no, no, no, no. it's just no, no, no, no, no. it's just about nicely wrapping now when they're they're tiny, they're tiny. when they're tiny, they're tiny. when they're tiny, they don't. they can they really don't. they can unwrap a banana. it'sjust they really don't. they can unwrap a banana. it's just about pulling you pulling things off, you know, pulling things off, you know, pulling cardboard box, pulling off a cardboard box, dumping all that. but no, i. yeah you do a lot of wrapping when you have five children. my parents used to wrap four sort of from about the 20th to about the just wrapping our the 24th, just wrapping our presents been presents that's what i've been doing yeah . what we've doing that's yeah. what we've been doing. we've just sort of been doing. we've just sort of been of the been doing. we've just sort of beewhere of the been doing. we've just sort of beewhere they've of the been doing. we've just sort of beewhere they've been of the been doing. we've just sort of beewhere they've been hidden; car where they've been hidden and sort of hiding them them all and sort of hiding them them all and organising who's going and then organising who's going to know. yeah it's a to what you know. yeah it's a lot it's been nightmare happy lot of it's been nightmare happy jewish crazy come on. but yeah i
3:49 am
mean all right what you what do you think about this story, though? do you think that is i mean, are you as cynical as david here? well, i don't know. maybe it was an honest mistake, but i hate wrapping as well. well do you enjoy wrapping? yeah. mean . can't it. yeah. i mean. i can't stand it. i was wrapping 70 presents last minute last. yeah. and it's just a labour to follow the corners as you were saying. i was so at school adults and it's a kind of artwork i would say . getting artwork i would say. getting those. yeah getting the people around all kinds of different shapes. and honestly, i'm at an age now where i don't want to bother with off bits of paper. i'd rather have the presents under the tree. i don't really care about knowing if it's a box from cartier or i don't know, a pair of socks i just want to get straight the gift. i think it's a waste of time. i really i'm less cynical than you, david. i think it did happen, and i think
3:50 am
thatis think it did happen, and i think that is mum's got good taste. yeah, i. he saved his mother from a catch a really catastrophic taste error because it's . okay. is not going to it's. okay. is not going to happen, but it's appalling. you haven't got. i think so. i like to. okay. said something about haven't got. i think so. i like to. ilkay. said something about haven't got. i think so. i like to. ii guess.id something about haven't got. i think so. i like to. ii guess. comedian ng about haven't got. i think so. i like to. ii guess. comedian alan out haven't got. i think so. i like to. ii guess. comedian alan carr me i guess. comedian alan carr has shockingly his has shockingly shared his christmas fail instagram after failing to wash out some red hairspray . let's take a look . hairspray. let's take a look. and for the benefit of radio viewers , poor old alan's hair is viewers, poor old alan's hair is still very and he's even got a bit on forehead as well. so that is definitely a christmas fail. let's get the panel on this come then who have you dyes your hair . i see some well it's come on many more but anybody who knew me as a 17 year old will remember the shoulder length black hair that for a year i suppose you tend to be your proper. oh, no, i was playing in a rock band and we would did a bit in the states and so had long curly black hair. i thought, you know, if i do this i'll just be like slash and
3:51 am
someone would give me a record contract. and contract. unfortunately not. and then the tie. oh well then you put on the tie. oh well then you put on the tie. oh well the hair, the show, respect to you and your viewers. look, you and your viewers. i look, i appreciate that's very appreciate that. that's very nice it's funny you nice to see. it's funny you should that. have should say that. let's have a little look at this. fine in little look at this. fine man in his little. there he is. that was me and my bleach blonde days . my johnny rotten. that was my little band time as well. and then it all fell out after i it they had less there for all of us so yeah , it's the right us so yeah, it's the right thing. i mean, he didn't. us so yeah, it's the right thing. i mean, he didn't . you thing. i mean, he didn't. you mean this? if anybody has done that. and actually, i've got to be honest, you, i, i just on my head this week, i thought, you know what, i'm going to be on tv on christmas. my beard is looking white and it's looking insanely white and it's all at the temples what air all grey at the temples what air i've was like, know i've got. i was like, you know what? i'm getting all the i'm going to get out some just for men want to do it but you look men i want to do it but you look if it would have been seasonally appropriate. well, have appropriate. well, you have a big beard. know he's also big white beard. know he's also afraid. putting on afraid. i've been putting on a bit weight and i was worried
3:52 am
bit of weight and i was worried that the father that people would the father christmas crowd yes christmas gb news crowd yes there's it's not good there's not it's not a good look. perhaps the biggest look. and perhaps the biggest festive all now festive fail of all now angry shoppers across britain have taken lamba taken to twitter to lamba sainsbury's after unpacking turkeys a turkeys in anticipation of a traditional christmas lunch, only bugs be rotten only to find the bugs be rotten and inedible. only to find the bugs be rotten and inedible . not much has and inedible. not much has changed from normal. let's a look at some of the complaints . look at some of the complaints. all right. we have various complaints here, zoe, complaining being charged complaining about being charged 40 quid for a rotten turkey someone else saying that kids crying and they had to eat beans on toast. oh, man. crying and they had to eat beans on toast. oh, man . getting the on toast. oh, man. getting the picture. now, that was a big story. this yammer about how turkeys we're going to run . so turkeys we're going to run. so i'm wondering if this is partly because people saw that like i'm going to get the turkey early , going to get the turkey early, so i've got one and perhaps it was obviously too early obviously probably go to the wrong person as , a terrier. wrong person as, a terrier. yeah, i don't know. and also if you get your turkeys extremely get it and it's frozen, you freeze it and then why would it what i'm guessing they maybe their freezer broke. broke or
3:53 am
they got there. some people don't like to freeze it because they think that that sort of well, if you get it fresh, then you get a day before it would be fresh. and if you get it frozen, then you shouldn't be. i don't know be rotten know why it would be rotten turkey. it sounds like probably asking worst person the. asking the worst person in the. yeah. look, i'm a 20 year yeah. yeah look, i'm a 20 year old, 20 vegetarian. some old, 20 year vegetarian. some turkey that you call turkey advises me that you call me a 20 year old as well. okay. yeah you take either yeah well, you can take either of that i'm out. what are of those that i'm out. what are you able about what do you. you able to about what do you. well, agree. you well, i agree. i think you should it fresh. i mean, i'm not too sure how can get the too sure how you can get the rotten birds, but i've actually been hearing people been hearing of more people trying different of mills trying different kinds of mills over example. over christmas example. christine now christine mcguinness is now feeding chicken feeding her family chicken nuggets over christmas so there's a few celebrities out there's a few celebrities out there that are trying new ways to serve on christmas day . so, i to serve on christmas day. so, i don't know, maybe you could try that one. i that one. i mean, i do want to say i'm going to just guess david that you're a man about tradition . yeah, about tradition. yeah, absolutely. and you think this
3:54 am
is yet more of into a vindication of my view that turkeys uses and go for something else. i can only imagine that it was a load of turkeys that have been sent on to the supermarket , then sold to the supermarket, then sold out to be sold and they've gone well. okay, let's talk about alternative christmas dinners. what guys of this? this what do you guys of this? this is what our producer had for dinner is christmas lunch dinner today is christmas lunch stroke that does there. he's got some white bread with butter and, some weird curry tin thing thatis and, some weird curry tin thing that is that made me cry when i haven't eaten very, very soon in the office was like, this is the side sight i've ever seen . looks side sight i've ever seen. looks happy, but not that's not a good look. i hope you're all taking him out for a proper christmas lunch after this. just to say sorry about that. do not let our producers out of studio. producers out of the studio. they can. get locked back they can. they get locked back in basement afterwards after in the basement afterwards after they've done their job. right. they've done theirjob. right. so that is a pretty sad state of
3:55 am
affairs that christmas is about eating , makes you happy, eating, makes you happy, enjoying yourself and eating what you want. if he was happy, eating white bread and things stop, mess then let's not criticise him . okay well emma , criticise him. okay well emma, she says defensively not that it where to start with the christmas dinner emma being very nice on this on this christmas day. fair enough right reached the end of the first hour but don't go anywhere . we have don't go anywhere. we have plenty to come after the break including a celebration of christmas tradition around the world and before that a look at the best festive telly the best of festive telly through years including through the years including ourselves see that looking ahead to tomorrow's weather and the uk is looking dry across the southeast but showers are elsewhere. some will be wintry in the north. let's take a look at the details it will be a cold start across scotland with some icy stretches in places, further wintry showers also move into northern and western areas with a met office yellow . snow and a met office yellow. snow and ice warning in force boxing day will also start across northern

4:07 am
tomorrow because we can't we don't rescinded sunday don't eat meat rescinded sunday but then a picture but my daughter then a picture of of the curry and put it of this of the curry and put it all over snapchat and called it child abuse and yes i won't be sort of always wins when people talk about this generation but that sounds like it's maybe taking it a little bit too far , taking it a little bit too far, you know. so what have you been watching that on tv over the last couple of days? so action movie you can think of . my son movie you can think of. my son is 17 years old, so i've seen taken one. take a do, take three. mission impossible. mission impossible. two, three. every action movie you can think of today. i enjoyed the cooking programmes eight easy. harriet's is very good . i like to watch is very good. i like to watch the cookery and sit there and think, oh, what would it make that? what would to do that? and then i make note of it you should get your daughter to watch and anger management watch it and anger management and you're this then and you're doing this and then you've watched and how old you've been watched and how old is your daughter? if don't is your daughter? if you don't mind asking this? 15. and she mind me asking this? 15. and she does cooking actually. does a lot of cooking actually. and said, well, if you want.
4:08 am
and i said, well, if you want. yeah, she she does lot of yeah, she she does do a lot of cooking good. but then i cooking very good. but then i said look the king speeches on let's all sit down and watch the king's speech and. the kids king's speech and. no, the kids went i sat while went upstairs. so i sat while watching speech. this watching the king's speech. this is come on. this is the first one. come on. this is the first one. come on. this is what they're going to remember. surely wrote remember. surely he wrote because said, don't want because they said, we don't want to watch it. we don't want to watch anything. do the monarchy. and upstairs. wow and they went upstairs. wow. wow i kids out of control, i know my kids out of control, joss.i i know my kids out of control, joss. i didn't know what to do. i what? you don't ask me. you're asking the wrong person. i just when i left the house control theyit when i left the house control they it was just absolute meltdowns about my five year old who just hated every night presence of time. and then he was like, hey, oh, my presence. i was like, oh , right. i'll say i was like, oh, right. i'll say like that. a five year old is hard work , really hard work. he hard work, really hard work. he is he's not very good at regulating . and unfortunately regulating. and unfortunately i'm not very good at regulating myself . and thus we have to. myself. and thus we have to. you're like my husband, because then the kids have a meltdown.
4:09 am
then he starts shouting, everyone sort shouting, and then have to sit in the middle. and then i start screaming because i give it a bit of time. and then i think, no, enough's enough. i mean, of christmas mean, it's too much of christmas is that we need to get school on. they need to get back into school tomorrow . say school by tomorrow. say absolutely . and what about your absolutely. and what about your daughter? i mean 15? is she walking, watching the in movies? there's a sort of law of diminishing returns with the taking so that she goes and watches something else because she says, i have to keep she says, do i have to keep watch action movies? watch in action movies? he always i think her always gets his way. i think her for and then yeah no for that. and then and yeah no no watch anything we no never watch anything we managed to sit down just before and watch at alone new york. okay now that . oh the new one. okay now that. oh the new one. yes i think is itv. okay now that. oh the new one. yes i think is itv . and when we yes i think is itv. and when we managed to watch that 45 minutes in silence , no one spoke. and in silence, no one spoke. and i was , i think. thank you, god. was, i think. thank you, god. god and then someone said something that was a game over it was it was but that i would argue that that has sort of become a classic that is the
4:10 am
film if you want to film with all of your family and you've got young ones particularly, thatis got young ones particularly, that is a . great malone is the that is a. great malone is the best one. i think grint is great and i would say paddington bear is a brilliant one as well there's so many family movies, but do you not think it's the same old thing every year ? yeah, same old thing every year? yeah, but i'm wondering if there's actually comfort in the sameness of it, like rewatching those movies as they get older, sort it celebrates somehow the passing time . and you can sort passing time. and you can sort of remember when they first watched it and i know i certainly with great movies, something like groundhog day or you know, like you can always nofice you know, like you can always notice little touch or something that you hadn't noticed before. yes. yes i tell you what i don't understand. i don't if you watched it, it was on this afternoon the i don't know whether it's just too intelligent for me. it's like a ballet. and it was i thought, oh, i'm going to get on that. but i remember going along to
4:11 am
like to it one year and like to see it live one year and i was just like, this is actually boring was pretty boring. i thought so, yeah, absolutely. i mean, give me die hard any day and now that is the ultimate. have you as your son watch that. i think we've we've didn't die hard as well. i moved on reacher . we've done on jack reacher. we've done all of all movies have of them. all the movies have done jack enjoy the done well. jack i did enjoy the king's speech joss. i really enjoyed the king's speech. yeah, i i mean, think i think i mean, i think delivered. i mean, i think that was delivered. yeah, i think was quite a lot of pressure on obviously this is the first one. it's hard you his mum obviously nailed it. she'd had a lot of time to really affect it so i thought i did i think king's charles did a betterjob and think we've got a great future with him than the queen of the queen was a bit actually. sorry. i'm sorry . but queen was a bit actually. sorry. i'm sorry. but i think king charles is going to be defender of faiths. i think that was of all faiths. i think that was just. and when he talks about good warriors and mosques and synagogues he talks about all churches and i thought that was
4:12 am
just that gave me and i think he spoke out way more than what the queen would have i think that was also comforting because it's somebody that actually he recognised sector workers recognised public sector workers , he recognised communities , he recognised the communities that helping each that were helping each other. and a conservative in and we're in a conservative in crisis. and i that i think crisis. and i think that i think that was nice. i think that was a positive monarchy that he's going to have a positive impact on you know i agree on our lives. you know i agree with you but course, as with you. but of course, as critics might say this him critics might say, this is him getting political and he should. but i think i'd in the monarchy should and i was he did that i do think he went too far i think he i think he did it brilliantly. i think he's going to be a great monarch if he does get political. okay. you get more political. okay. you know, going to agree know, i'm going to have to agree you on that one. and now done you on that one. and now done you this your final bit of you can this your final bit of work i guess what they were what is the rest of the evening what what is what is the rest of the evening hold for you. i'm going to go to bed because. i am upset, exhausted. i'm a little bit hung over from last night and just need to get to bed. and
4:13 am
i want any more i don't want hear any more fighting. don't to here any fighting. i don't to be here any more and it's done well more of this and it's done well . you so note also this is from these worlds together . not at these worlds together. not at thatis these worlds together. not at that is just you keeping it real and thank you so much for joining us on christmas and sharing it with me. thank you, george, take coming up after the break, tobias person will be here to tell us all about christmas in sweden and we will also be discussing different christmas around the world. but first, as we continue our to lift your spirits on christmas night, let's take a look at the annual fashion sausage walk in hyde park .
4:17 am
welcome back to the show. turkey dinners, christmas crackers and drunk and rao's are part and parcel of a british christmas but what happens in other parts of the world at this time of year ? i'm delighted to say the year? i'm delighted to say the comedian persson joins us now from sweden to tell us what he has been getting up to . merry has been getting up to. merry christmas, tobias. merry christmas, tobias. merry christmas . hello, sweden. christmas. hello, sweden. calling thank you for a wonderful show . yes. well, now wonderful show. yes. well, now i'm going to be across europe. this is way to greet people in sweden at this . how do you say sweden at this. how do you say merry christmas? what do you to each other ? we do we say good each other? we do we say good yule, which sounds like, you know, yuletide is you . yeah. goo know, yuletide is you. yeah. goo goo goo . good. you okay ? good. goo goo. good. you okay? good. you. merry christmas . is it a
4:18 am
you. merry christmas. is it a big deal? i mean , is every is it big deal? i mean, is every is it as . yeah, i mean here we've got as. yeah, i mean here we've got the hearts. we've the jumpers. i see that you're wearing those as well. is it a big deal out in sweden? yeah it's huge. it is . sweden? yeah it's huge. it is. big deal. yeah yeah, it's huge. but it's mainly about and watching animated films. i mean, we have to say, i mean, we eat all day we drink all day and then we sort of fall asleep and we dance around the christmas tree and all that. the biggest thing would say, thing in sweden, i would say, apart from the is watching 3:00 in sweden, we watch an hour of old disney films like old disney films and it's like a holy you know the whole nation just stops and watch donald duck duck and mickey mouse and all that so it's i don't know why he's for 50 years he's been going for 50 years which american film was the which american film was it? the first sort thing that crossed first sort of thing that crossed over something? is that what it is? i know. i mean also my is? i don't know. i mean also my childhood everything just childhood and everything just don't on, you know, your don't get put on, you know, your life donald duck life well, look, donald duck and it exciting 1983, but it was exciting in 1983, but nowadays try to get my kids to look animation. look go. so now
4:19 am
tradition is now maybe the tradition is now maybe the tradition might be coming to an end then with this generation now. yeah, but we've got some clips now. you have a look. this is the famous photograph . every is the famous photograph. every time you change o'clock every year we watch this look , this year we watch this look, this guy doing the chessboard , my dad guy doing the chessboard, my dad and all dads in sweden . oh, and all dads in sweden. oh, i would love to do that. you know just one stroke of, you know, saying, know, like said, saying, you know, like you said, you want the same thing you know you want the same thing every down you can every year you sit down you can almost sync and it's that's almost lip sync and it's that's part of the tradition. you know it's you half it's silly you sort of half drunk but you love it connects you as a society. tell me about this dancing around christmas tree. i haven't heard of that one we dance one before. yeah well, we dance around the trees and we sing whole swedish i mean, whole swedish songs. i mean, it's translate . we sing it's hard to translate. we sing about and things is about frogs and where things is about frogs and where things is a lot of. yeah but we dance around what someone else somewhere and we porridge and we look we put an almond in the porridge due to that . no, you porridge due to that. no, you put an almond and you have to
4:20 am
find the guy who finds the almond a prize, a kiss , a drink almond a prize, a kiss, a drink or whatever. everyone has to porridge for an hour and the guy who finds the almond wins something. very poor something. what's a very poor tradition , but you have so tradition, but you have so animated films that can do better . yeah, it's amazing to better. yeah, it's amazing to see . so interesting how see. so interesting how christmas is such an integral of different societies, but of how these different traditions of going in very varied direction . going in very varied direction. yeah yeah. no, it's , you know, yeah yeah. no, it's, you know, it's all i know. i've always felt like, know, you just eat chocolate, you eat, you drink, you try to celebrate. i mean, i really i mean , it's just fun to really i mean, it's just fun to be around your family, right i mean, i think most people think that swedish people meet up that we swedish people meet up in we sit there for in a sauna and we sit there for hours and it's not like that. but try to meet there but we try to meet up there like, you know, like, have you seen alexander, the famous seen and alexander, the famous bergman there's like bergman film where there's like 45 and that's, 45 people dancing and that's, you , that's utopia. you get you know, that's utopia. you get everyone. but you don't see around you to around the. yeah, you try to sort and socialise like sort of mix and socialise like for one year for one day for you
4:21 am
and then you don't see them the rest year. so you of rest of the year. so you sort of do everything night that do everything that night that does i mean , i'm does some fantastic. i mean, i'm just to think of, you just trying to think of, you know, sort of british know, sort of the british christian christmas traditions we eat turkey . is that a we have do eat turkey. is that a big thing? we do turkey ham . we big thing? we do turkey ham. we celebrated christmas yesterday . celebrated christmas yesterday. did you know that? oh yeah, they are. yeah okay. so i'm doing is celebrations just for you . this celebrations just for you. this it's just decorations for you . it's just decorations for you. so why do you celebrate on christmas eve then? what's the idea there? i don't know . you idea there? i don't know. you have to. you have to ask the biblical people. i have idea. it's just one of those things that we have so, you know, you just go with the flow. you just go with the flow. yes, yes. and i dress a santa claus. i love that because my i did have a santa claus last night. went up, you know, my son is three years old. and that was the first time you saw santa claus or father christmas, you said so i had to leave the flats by the newspaper and walk out, come back and
4:22 am
traumatise , which was fun. now, traumatise, which was fun. now, did you did they guess that it was you in any way? did you leave any identifying clues? you see on? josh, come on. i have see me on? josh, come on. i have your five. i did the performance . it's like the king's speech. come on. i just i that because for the last ten years i have played santa claus at my children's nursery. so as they've also gone through the nursery, i've always been santa and i always have to take off my glasses because i'm always of them. february but the problem is, i'm absolutely blind without . so it does mean i an hourjust kind of bumping into and for children traumatised so you walk around like this. oh yes. oh, that's essentially an one of my children actually figure out i was me. but i got to be honest with you. i don't know. i did lose respect for the others. i was like, really, you can't tell this is me like guys , you need this is me like guys, you need to up your game. this it and
4:23 am
that was your performance oh my, you know me i go method i was doing it for you know you method acting know but it's fun i mean i mean you know so you people don't normally with like you you go to the pub fairly often right and you meet up and you have a drink. talk about your life in sweden we stay at home and watch the neighbours and then once a year we dress up and drink and sort of watch american films and then go home. so it's kind of then we go home. so it's kind of sad really. don't socialise sad really. we don't socialise as as we should. get it as much as we should. we get it the the year. and what the rest of the year. and what about presence? is that big deal as well? it is a big deal, yeah. and grown ups always to each and grown ups always say to each other, buy anything this other, no, not buy anything this yean other, no, not buy anything this year, of the year, just get presence of the kids. of course. and then kids. yeah, of course. and then you partner secretly , you know, you partner secretly, you know, sneaks and buys, know , a sneaks out and buys, you know, a book you have do book or whatever. you have to do the because you know that the same because you know that she buy will buy. so she will buy or he will buy. so it's one. yeah, we're not going waste money. we just give the kids the presence. then you kids the presence. and then you have something, right ? have to buy something, right? actually, ten years ago we had a deal , my wife
4:24 am
actually, ten years ago we had a deal, my wife and i, and we said, no, let's not buy anything, you know, just for the kids. okay, deal. you don't buy me anything. i don't buy you anything. i you anything. deal i bought you a book secretly, book anyway, secretly, because i knew would give something. knew she would give something. and, you know, she gave me tickets see rolling tickets to see the rolling stones. okay so a book stones. sweden. okay so a book versus two tickets to see rolling stones . so i. yeah, rolling stones. so i. yeah, since to getting that one. she's very tricky know my sister this year we went over a few days ago she was like oh we're not, let's not do presents for the kids this year. i can't be bothered and but i felt a little bit out of order to me because i've always bought her kids now. but the thing is, her are now sort of 17 and 19. and now that my kids are going to finally be getting some presents her now she to end that tradition she wants to end that tradition that wrong to me . mm that seems wrong to me. mm clever. yeah. just a thing, right? yeah, i know it's this is not on. and what about did get anything today? what you ? didn't anything today? what you? didn't get rolling stone tickets today then. get rolling stone tickets today then . yeah i. got this. oh the
4:25 am
then. yeah i. got this. oh the swedish bible number did you really. i'm kidding . this is. really. i'm kidding. this is. no, i got socks is a tradition my kids always gave me socks because i was keep loose my socks as is always holding them. so i got socks books , stuff so i got socks books, stuff i don't know what they always asking you want. i got everything i want. i always say but i know i don't know. yeah. i just like to eat and watch films . yeah, that's what i want to do. i myself a book wrapped it up and gave it to myself . that up and gave it to myself. that is literally what i did today. i was like, oh, thanks, guys. and i just said to, my, my second eldest son, i was like, oh, how did you know this was the book that i and it was all i knew. i'd heard you say it, like, totally. he just straight in on it. he just thought i it. he took he just thought i was being sulky and he was like, no, yeah, i got you book. and he went it somewhat of that. went with it somewhat of that. now, last question here . what now, last question here. what are up to? tobias in 2023, are you up to? tobias in 2023, when he got to see you back here
4:26 am
on free speech nation ? i hope on free speech nation? i hope so. that's the plan. yeah i mean, i was trying to come over. i mean, it's always fun to come to the uk . as you see, i've got to the uk. as you see, i've got no friends there. a lot of time, time to decorate. so i need to come over and do some, some live gigs and i need to watch the king's speech. it was good, right? course. you right? yeah, of course. if you want to culturally fit in over here, i mean, only so here, i mean, there's only so many times that you can read the book. oh oh, how dare you ? it book. oh oh, how dare you? it seems like sort that seems almost racist to be given an abba book in sweden that's like the equivalent. it's like giving the equivalent. it's like giving the want to think of another joke because no i don't want to know exactly i take point. yeah i like abba. come on. you. no, because he doesn't. abba. tobias mayer. it's lovely . see? lots of mayer. it's lovely. see? lots of people play. i'll see you in the next few months and thank you very for joining us today. i would it's christmas but would it's christmas day but really your off this is really this is your off this is your boxing it's not as your boxing day. so it's not as right. is my day in right. this is my boxing day in boxing. it's my day off. so i'm
4:27 am
going to rebound and have some herring i'm going we're herring and i'm going to we're going a little going to perform a little nativity tomorrow . the nativity play tomorrow. the chosen one greta thunberg your chosen one. gretta yeah yes . chosen one. gretta yeah yes. very good. oh, i may take a let's get our panel in to talk about some other festive traditions . and in austria and traditions. and in austria and some parts , germany, the adults some parts, germany, the adults dress up as krampus. the christmas devil. i think we can have a look at that now. wow yep. david that is pretty terrifying , isn't it? i don't terrifying, isn't it? i don't think the germans are really known for their lightness of touch and sense of humour when it comes to traditions like this. it is weird. there are some very odd european that i suppose about over the suppose come about over the years nobody really years and nobody really remembers but they're remembers why. but they're becoming green. and that's a lovely thing about tradition that it provides that as you said, it provides a warmth and background to these warmth and a background to these things . i warmth and a background to these things. i think, you know, things. and i think, you know, the christmas traditions at one event for themselves and family or friends can be wonderful for
4:28 am
instance. a group of instance. i've got a group of friends always together friends who always get together for they're in for christmas. they're all in a sort and fifties, and sort of forties and fifties, and they tradition of wearing they have a tradition of wearing different hats. one will different hats. so one will their one will say their affairs and one will say solar topi and one would wear a flat cap and one will wear and they just sort swap around. they just sort of swap around. and something they and it's something they do, something that them the reliability the when reliability and the ease of when they get together. this is part of what makes it special for them. say that if that if them. i must say that if that if krampus down my chimney on krampus came down my chimney on christmas i not be christmas, i would not be terribly happy receive him. terribly happy to receive him. we shrug and. i we have a shrug and. yeah, i mean, would you take your two year old son to see krampus the devil ? no, i year old son to see krampus the devil? no, i wouldn't. and actually, some . these christmas actually, some. these christmas characters are quite frightening . have a little friends, . we have a little friends, a friend, my son, who is terrified of elves. my son is okay with elves . but when i took him to elves. but when i took him to his first santas grotto, a few back, he's used to santa's now. but when we went into the grotto , he was completely terrified of the fact that santa was there in real life, it's sort of like meeting your you know, it's like meeting your you know, it's like meeting god or something and
4:29 am
actually meeting santa. so, yeah, i do think i do think it's quite a big thing for children to, know , to meet these to, you know, to meet these characters or have elves , for characters or to have elves, for example, off shelves , example, leaping off shelves, the elf on the shelf and now the elf off the shelf. and i know this this stuff itself. action is confusing. it is is getting confusing. it is confusing, especially you live in well, look in islington. well, let's look at now. all about at japan now. they're all about fine dining . at japan now. they're all about fine dining. let's at japan now. they're all about fine dining . let's take at japan now. they're all about fine dining. let's take a at japan now. they're all about fine dining . let's take a look at japan now. they're all about fine dining. let's take a look. yep. christmas japan. they sit and they eat cake . cfc ryan , you and they eat cake. cfc ryan, you can't approve this, can you ? no, can't approve this, can you? no, i don't. i just danced to. i think it's quite strange , but think it's quite strange, but maybe they've started a trend like i said earlier, christine mcguinness is now giving her children chicken nuggets. paddy and christine mcguinness. so maybe it is going become a thing in the uk. i am very traditional, my family and i traditional. we have breakfast in the morning a typical english breakfast and then we typically at about 1:00 we will have a
4:30 am
turkey and that's exactly really like the royal family and i think. you can go off these traditions and it's nice to have that sense of nostalgia because i go back years when i was a child and going to harrods and seeing father christmas , the seeing father christmas, the grotto and having turkey every year or not the birds or wearing different jumpers every year that we all do as a family that's very nostalgic and it just exemplifies what i think christmas is all about is those very individual memories just having fun with your family. but i certainly would not be having fun with my family if they decided to or the kfc or mcdonald's any fast food for that matter. on ubereats deliveroo i would probably leave , 90 deliveroo i would probably leave , go back home. well, i think have a good reason for doing it overin have a good reason for doing it over in japan, but i that you just dropped how you used to go to harrods when you were a kid. yes. and i still do lots of going to harrods . now, hamleys going to harrods. now, hamleys is the place to go . oh, i tell
4:31 am
is the place to go. oh, i tell you, i was in hamleys 48 hours ago. i was i was too. oh yeah. traumatised oh, my god. imagine like the five all on different floors was with the youngest two nightmare for that bear, you have to starve and to queue for, like, an hour and a half. yeah. to my god. yeah, it to get in. oh, my god. yeah, it was absolutely. and i stupidly thought that for some reason it'd like, no, i'm going to it'd be like, no, i'm going to double like people think double it. like people think they're go in, they they're going to go in, they think be busy, so think it's going to be busy, so they're going that's they're not going die. so that's what that's what i what i am. that's what i thought. i thought no one will go on the 23rd. it'll be really, really material. do that really material. you do that this have. two it this idiots have. two of us. it is very good. now for is very good. time now for another we have all another break. we have all tomorrow's pages in and we are about to discuss the big stories with panel. see you .
4:35 am
it's just after 30 pm. so it's time for this . so take a look at time for this. so take a look at tomorrow's papers right now. the headunes tomorrow's papers right now. the headlines are in and we're going to start with the daily mail king's message of love and hope . we had a little chat about that earlier. he salutes his beloved mother and we got a picture of kate there in a very trendy looking , looking very trendy looking, looking very beautiful. if i may say that. and obviously, we've got santa at the top advertising in the daily mail, as you do the daily telegraph. i feel for families who are struggling, says the king. and we've got picture of william kate again, the kids all dressed up very smartly , last dressed up very smartly, last gasp as well for covid data behind lockdowns. yayi more covid news and lot of stuff at the bottom there as. they get into things, road chaos , the way into things, road chaos, the way to the boxing day sale . oh, wow. to the boxing day sale. oh, wow. all right . the times, king's all right. the times, king's speech as a gift for tireless
4:36 am
health workers. well, i think the real gift that they would like is a raise but, you know, they were going home and now they've decided to include king charles. he's sort of walking there with a bit of a grimace, a bit of a wince. they've chosen quite a strange photo . i don't quite a strange photo. i don't know they've that one know why they've chosen that one where two of them don't look good. and also cure for bed good. and also i cure for bed blocking can predict hospital stay okay well there we go you it sounds like that's pretty much needed at the moment the guardian have a look look. the kid they did actually put the king in somewhere. king put spotlight on cost of living crisis. we've got a picture there of some swimmers at sutton park getting naked a man slightly overweight in middle five respect to him and the big story as monumental shift with a third more stay at home fathers been there done that didn't like it . the daily express king
4:37 am
it. the daily express king charles uses his first christmas message to address the great anxiety and hardship experienced by many trying to their bills and keep their families fed and they're calling the king caring and a much nicer photo there of the entire family . and they've the entire family. and they've managed to sort of write in the background is a certain prince andrew not looking so happy and fuss down. i don't know if that was photoshop not the daily mirror. charles praises a selfless nhs that's the king's first xmas speech . and yeah, it first xmas speech. and yeah, it seems i'm sensing a theme theme here. not much news happening . here. not much news happening. and the independent warning of a generation of children held back the independent, they have not gone with any king charles stuff and they've also got some football photo. and i don't care about. football photo. and i don't care about . so let's move on. the sun about. so let's move on. the sun king of hearts , strangely, with king of hearts, strangely, with a picture of princess claire in a picture of princess claire in
4:38 am
a hat . and he's talking about a hat. and he's talking about that charles's tribute to beloved mother. that's closest the sun has got to actually putting some news out for a few days now. well on the sun and the daily star scare of , the dog the daily star scare of, the dog and they're talking here as a dog set fire to a house. so my kids are watching this. hi, kids and that's why we're not getting a dog . there we go. that is a dog. there we go. that is papers . okay, then. so what do papers. okay, then. so what do you think? they're right. mark let's go back to the daily mail. they're everybody seems to be focusing on the king's speech , focusing on the king's speech, obviously a good film. his first one. did you watch it? i tend to tune in at 3pmi suppose everything's off the go in harrods after going to harrods and watching in paris. no, i thought it was right. goods he delivered the mellifluous and it was a very elegant speech and a lot of pressure . the king's lot of pressure. the king's shoulders after his mother for nearly 70 years delivered a very
4:39 am
booming speech at the end of the christmas time. and i felt that he did a very good he was empathetic to the situation with workers right now , especially workers right now, especially health workers. and also being the defender faith. he exemplified that message clearly in the speech and thought it was a very good job overall. yeah. emma, did you did you like it as well? did you watch it? yeah, i agree. well, no, i listen to it on the radio and of course, i know television. absolutely. and yeah.i know television. absolutely. and yeah. i thought it was well delivered. well, yeah and, you know, obviously he to talk about he had to touch on the cost of living crisis. but i felt that he did it sort of elegantly and with compassion and i mean , with compassion and i mean, yeah, there was the reception to king charles has been pretty goodi king charles has been pretty good i think was a lots of sense of what kind king is he going to be and also not that much love for as prince charles but for him as prince charles but i think he's had as they, say a good, you know, a good few months, a good let's see where it goes. i mean, i think the
4:40 am
real for 2023 going to real thing for 2023 is going to be what happens the whole family, because we've got this bombshell out in bombshell memoir coming out in january, memoir. i know. bombshell memoir coming out in j'know.. memoir. i know. bombshell memoir coming out in j'know. we memoir. i know. bombshell memoir coming out in j'know. we haven't*moir. i know. bombshell memoir coming out in j'know. we haven't talked know. bombshell memoir coming out in j'know. we haven't talked about i know. we haven't talked about harry tonight. well harry and meghan tonight. well maybe in disguise. maybe a blessing in disguise. but think that is but anyway, i think that that is going really interesting going to be really interesting to deals with to watch and how he deals with it, because the moment, you it, because at the moment, you know, charles and william, are just with by just basically with it by not deaung . just basically with it by not dealing . and so i'm just dealing with it. and so i'm just really kind of intrigued to see, well, harry meghan well, what the harry and meghan do been shouting do now. they've been shouting and saying all and screaming and saying all this and there's been a this stuff and there's been a dignified silence from palace. what what you what would you what do you think, i this is think, david? i mean, this is a dignified silence or is it a snub? they obviously didn't get mentioned the william did mentioned at all the william did . yeah. the messaging of the as it were, the imaging of the accompanying veto to the king's speech was very interesting because it quite clearly set up who were to be the important members of the royal family dunng members of the royal family during the king's reign. members of the royal family during the king's reign . you during the king's reign. you had, of course, the king and queen prince, princess queen, then the prince, princess of wales and royal princess anne, the earl countess of
4:41 am
wessex. was duchess , wessex. there was no duchess, duke of no princess duke of york, no princess usually no princess beatrice and think this is showing that what prince charles's prince of wales said was going to happen much more slimmed down, more streamlined more business like monarchy is going come to pass for sussexes i think it is for the sussexes i think it is a dignified silence on the part of the palace because they realise that there's nothing to be gained back these gained by fighting back these people. to do is people. all you have to do is give yet more and give them yet more rope and watch them hang themselves though i think the in public reaction to particularly the duchess sussex since they duchess of sussex since they began bizarre campaign of began this bizarre campaign of self—promotion and of airing their dirty laundry in public , their dirty laundry in public, been one of the more welcome signs that the public remain sane that they have seen through what are quite clearly to me anyway quite clearly by the duchess of sussex to portray in a false egregious light the royal family order that she can be this great victim and carry on her failing career in the public. i'm so glad that the people , this nation and i hope people, this nation and i hope of america as well have seen
4:42 am
through it. and i simply hope that in years to come her that in the years to come her husband realise it too. and husband will realise it too. and come home. well, what else was gonna say? feel pretty gonna say? we i feel pretty proud we didn't proud of us that we didn't manage to talk about the sussexes for a hour and sussexes for a good hour and a half, but would you agree with that i would agree. that remark? yes i would agree. and i it very clear in and i think it was very clear in the king's speech to have working prominence within working royals prominence within the programme and not to include the programme and not to include the sussexes or the duke of york, because i don't how there would be any benefit to adding them to that programme, because so sussexes have so far, the sussexes have publicly desecrated the royal family and i would disagree in the sense that i wouldn't place the sense that i wouldn't place the blame just on meghan. i also think harry is just as culpable in terms of trying to bring down family. both participate in this netflix programme and they have pumped out so much animosity since leaving the royal family despite saying they're going america to seek privacy . yet america to seek privacy. yet we're seeing so much from this
4:43 am
couple who are absolutely desperate for attention. i wouldn't be surprised if the duchess of sussex is trying to be the next kim kardashian. well, i going to say, i would argue it seems like it's more for money you know, they get the podcast deal, for money you know, they get the podcast deal , get the netflix podcast deal, get the netflix deal podcast deal, get the netflix deal, the book deal . and then, deal, the book deal. and then, of when are involving of course, when are involving the content makers because of course, they're not actually making the content they want pound of flesh. yeah, they want to they to have this controversy , they want to add these images. they you and maybe they want to you know, and maybe that somewhat naivety that was somewhat naivety certainly on prince harry's part to think that's you know , no one to think that's you know, no one wants to pay millions of or whatever for just wants to pay millions of or whatever forjust a sort of whatever for just a sort of a damp squib of like, oh, we all love each other when we get on. but that's not how it works. yeah, there are rumours that after the queen's death he did try take of the more try take some of the more damaging out this damaging stuff out of this memoir . and of course the memoir. and of course the publisher said absolutely publisher said no, absolutely not. we want this to not. you know, we want this to sell. we're forjanuary sell. we're waiting for january it sort of the it for the january sort of the fallow period in the book in the
4:44 am
book, trade. and it is going to be is going to be explosive if the netflix anything go the netflix is anything to go by. mean, i, i like by. yeah. i mean, i, i like there was a lot of gas there and a lot, you know, i mean, there was something things, but we'll, we'll see how goes. something we'll see how it goes. something about though, that about written word, though, that can a lot more damaging. can be a lot more damaging. absolutely. yeah. well, we'll see how particularly you see how many particularly you had ghost—writer. had a decent ghost—writer. exactly he hasn't he exactly i mean, he hasn't he hasn't anything and he's hasn't written anything and he's rather i don't think he's ready, let alone written . but you know, let alone written. but you know, david, the prince, king charles has got a lot of credit for about the cost of living crisis . he's also talked about the nhs. like i said earlier. but do you think that there is, you know, he might get some flak from people sort of getting maybe a little bit too political. well, there's a bit of criticism. i think some people him for bringing it in at all will criticise him for not going far enough. and i think it's not at all unusual for the sovereign in his way in as it was for 69 years. christmas message to touch on issues that
4:45 am
affect nation. i don't think they're saying that the nation is suffering a cost of is suffering from a cost of living. an overtly party living. is an overtly party political it's political thing. i think it's the paternal figure of the nafion the paternal figure of the nation that his subjects are . i nation that his subjects are. i think it also ties in with deeply christian message that permeated his speech for choosing to stand in the choir of st george's chapel at windsor rather than behind a desk in buckingham palace. i think it showed immediately that his was associating himself with christianity overtly, even though, of course , did what he though, of course, did what he said he would and stick to being a defender faith, which is a perfectly reasonable thing when you look at your coin and, it says king charles, fdr , says king charles, fdr, fidelity, defence, all that that can be defender of the faith. but being it can also just be defender of faith. i think defender of faith. and i think that the king has been clear for many, many decades now that that was going role, was going to be his role, because he's seen the way that was going to be his role, bec demographics the way that was going to be his role, bec demographics of e way that was going to be his role, bec demographics of the ay that was going to be his role, bec demographics of the nation the demographics of the nation are way that are changing, the way that national changing national culture is changing that not anymore that christianity is not anymore the monolith it in the the monolith that it was in the national religious life in 1952
4:46 am
i think is perfectly but he's also i think by choosing to stand what he did and rooting his message the message of his message in the message of christ of love and christ one of love and compassion forgiveness that compassion and forgiveness that though defend faiths though he will defend all faiths , a christian , he is still a christian monarch. i it love david you monarch. i it i love david you sit on the with david and you get a full on history lesson just on a sunday night get a bit love going look my coins love i'm going to look my coins tomorrow many look at tomorrow how many coins look at the i'll understand. the coins and i'll understand. oh it's just such a you are such a lovely way of delivering history. yeah, no, history. thank you. yeah, no, absolutely. much, absolutely. thank you so much, david. let's about david. i mean, let's about another let's see another story now. let's see what david can give us about what, david can give us about the history of stay at home dads. i sense that this is now on the on the expert on this. well i can i can only speak as a as a stepfather and not having to live with stepchildren is extremely useful . i just have a extremely useful. i just have a stepfather doesn't have to live with me because my partner and i live. but i think i'm okay. i'm not i'm in favour of this sea island style. yeah, exactly . i'm island style. yeah, exactly. i'm in favour of that in that. i think there should be a
4:47 am
redefined role for the father in the modern day. i think that the old system was too hands off . i old system was too hands off. i think that it was it is frankly, it put all the onus of parenting on the mother. however, i'm deeply sceptical the changes that have taken place over the past 40 or 50 years of the increase of children being brought up, neither by mother or father, because both parents are working. i think it's of the working. i think it's one of the most effective points our most effective points of our system it essentially system that it essentially forces women to go to work in forces women to go to work in for people to be able to buy houses. i that there is in houses. i think that there is in the innate of being of a of the innate way of being of a of a woman, a more or a greater inclination towards parenting, particularly in the early years. so fine . you are a particularly so fine. you are a particularly as a father to stay at home then that's great. but i think that we must as a nation, as many other nations do recognise that there is great benefit to mothers being being given the ability by the state and by our society . four days early is stay
4:48 am
society. four days early is stay at home and nurture the child and build that important ball. well i'm going to agree with you 100% there and i feel like that may blessing that have may be best blessing that i have as was too that my wife as a parent was too that my wife and i worked in jobs that allowed us to be very hands on certainly early years do certainly those early years do your i mean those your grandmothers i mean those early are the most early years are the most important up to life are and they're they're incredibly special i'm a mother so special i'm a single mother so for nine months now , i have been for nine months now, i have been at home looking after my son, my own with him, but also them nights, mornings, early , you nights, mornings, early, you know, middle of the night. so can kind of make it work somehow. but i think this in the guardian about this monumental shift with a third more stay at home fathers. it's still if you actually look into the details one in nine stay at home parent is a man. so the other eight. yes, eight in nine are still women. so it's overwhelmingly women. so it's overwhelmingly women who are staying at home, looking after looking after kids. you not me, though. anyway, time for break. but when
4:49 am
4:52 am
it's time to reveal today's greatest britain and jackals. let's see my panel of nominated. emma, you have chosen the queen as your greatest britain. i feel that's to be a popular choice. tell me more. i did. i wasn't even you know, particularly passionate monarchist before the queen's death, but we had so much the queen last year. and i just think that it was just wonderful to see to hear so much footage to watch so much footage to and hear so many of her words . think about her legacy and everything. i just don't think there's anyone really i mean, i was looking back at 20, 22, was sort looking back at 20, 22, i didn't think as i mean, there were so many idiots and so much nastiness and scandal and muck in 2022. don't think there's
4:53 am
in 2022. i don't think there's really that could choose really that one could choose apart queen 2022. all apart from the queen 2022. all right. david, you've right. well, david, you've nominated none other than the king. oh, my gosh. the two of you don't don't fight each other. know, he's been other. now, you know, he's been in the news a little bit today. maybe he has i think there's one simple why it has to be simple reason why it has to be the he has managed the king because he has managed to which was going to to transition which was going to be the most difficult time of the first few years of his reign, taking a pass global war. i think he's done that. he's doneit i think he's done that. he's done it seamlessly. he's the nafion done it seamlessly. he's the nation at ease with the idea that he is now the monarch, the i think the funeral obsequious of a majesty, late majesty, would brilliantly the king played his part with dignity, but didn't push his way to the fore. i think really fore. i think he's really played. blinder fair enough. i mean, you've mean, right smile. you've also go the king i think the king go for the king i think the king of a royal theme . well, royal of a royal theme. well, royal assent. yeah well, i would say the king because i thought the speech was amazing after nine years, delivered the years, the queen delivered the christmas message did christmas message and she did a good job in terms of filling his mother's shoes. it was mellifluous. was elegant . and
4:54 am
mellifluous. it was elegant. and after dealing with so much rubbish from and harry rubbish from meghan and harry this i think he's led the this year, i think he's led the charge in being and being a great ambassador for the royal and for the country around the world. so yes you know this president respects the king but i'm going , president respects the king but i'm going, emma, it's going to be the queen. just the last time you i. right. let's see my panel have nominated for the union jack emma you have gone for jack cos emma you have gone for prince harry. certainly does prince harry. he certainly does get odd mention round here get the odd mention round here david. for the big david. you've gone for the big name in the shape of prince price. prime minister rishi sunak and rahmani. you've gone to joe lycett . yeah, you know , to joe lycett. yeah, you know, i'm going to go for rishi sunak just only for when he was handing out the food and it was, it was cringeworthy i felt for the guy, but it was it was awkward , it was so unfair. it awkward, it was so unfair. it was , he was no, he was using the was, he was no, he was using the rishi sunak nothing wrong. he was serving up was helping out at a food bank. he was serving homeless people, meals is great, he said to the man.
4:55 am
homeless people, meals is great, he said to the man . the man he said to the man. the man said, oh, you know something about you working? if you actually read what happened, rishi said, are you in and rishi sunak said, are you in and he sort of hesitated. was he sort of hesitated. he was aware probably wasn't . aware the man probably wasn't. what? what do you mean to. oh, you're clearly homeless. you know, i agree with him. and the reason i mean, the reason i mean, that's not the reason i mean, that's not the reason he going. okay, guys, reason he was going. okay, guys, sorry. well, good to sorry. know. well, it's good to see spirit is see the christmas spirit is oven see the christmas spirit is over. thank for watching tonight. also to tonight. thanks so much. also to my fantastic panel. i'm staying around present headliners around to present headliners i hope you're going to stick around for that. merry christmas, everyone. you christmas, everyone. thank you for ahead , forjoining us. looking ahead, tomorrow's weather and the uk is looking dry across the south—east, but showers elsewhere. some will be wintry in the north. let's take a look at the details. it will be a cold start across scotland with icy stretches in places . wintry icy stretches in places. wintry showers will also move into northern and western areas with a met office. yellow snow , ice a met office. yellow snow, ice warning in force . boxing day warning in force. boxing day will also start cold across northern ireland with a yellow ice in effect. showers will spread across the country throughout morning. many north
