boats. the home office is setting aside £500 million to manage two new migrant centres in a bid to kerb illegal immigration. >> the met office is warning a wet winter will be looking at how prepared britain is to deal with torrential rain on this flood safety awareness week . flood safety awareness week. >> rain clearing to the east through this morning. but will you see sunshine by this afternoon? find out more with me later . later. >> very good morning to you. wherever you're watching or listening from. >> i'm eamonn holmes, i'm isabel webster, and this is gb news breakfast. >> good news and bad news. good news is you live up a hill. yeah. yeah. bad news is to get to your house, you've got to cross a bndge house, you've got to cross a bridge over a bridge. and i say
9:02 am
a bridge. >> it's like you can only go one way. >> you can only go that way or the other car comes towards you. there's not room for two cars. >> there's room for one. >> there's room for one. >> well, the worst thing is when you get over that bridge, then it's quite often flooded and you have to reverse back over the bridge, turn around and come another way. so what we're trying to say is, where do you live? think about where you live. and if you're buying somewhere near a river, think twice because we're all going to have to deal more and more, i think, with these. >> but somebody would almost have to tell you because we could look in the dry. >> you look somewhere and you say, well, this looks lovely. this is pretty. it's on a little hill or whatever. but then no one ever tells you that there is this huge torrent of, of water that could burst through here twice a year. >> well, my brother lives in a mill cottage. that's never going to be a good idea, is it? i mean, obviously they've diverted the mill away, but he's on flat land near a very fast flowing river. hasn't flooded yet. he's been there about five years. but you've got to be worrying every time you hear the rain. yeah, i would be. >> well, that's why we're talking about this flood awareness week. how aware are you of floods? and worse still,
9:03 am
if you already know that you've got a house, a home, a business in an area that will flood , in an area that will flood, you've then got to face that flood and clean up, pay for it, whatever. and then maybe do it all again a short time later. that must be demoralising. >> one thing i would say is if you live anywhere near a river, and i know this because for many years i was a reporter covering flood situations and they often come in the middle of the night out of nowhere. have your precious photographs and your important documents, not only in a fireproof box, because you never know if there's going to be a fire, but not on the ground floor and not somewhere where it can flood. if you've got two storeys, keep your precious things on the first floor. >> okay. >> okay. >> more on that as we progress through the next half hour. top story this morning is, well, this potential third assassination attempt on former us president donald trump. >> it was reportedly thwarted on saturday night. >> well, local police arrested an armed man. now he was carrying a lot of weapons and fake passports as he attempted to get into a rally. donald

trump was addressing in california. >> yes, the 49 year old las vegas resident vem miller , vegas resident vem miller, denied wanting to hurt the former president after being released on bail. >> this comes as the local county sheriff said the man in question was likely to be what is called a sovereign citizen . is called a sovereign citizen. thatis is called a sovereign citizen. that is someone who doesn't believe in governmental control. >> well, earlier we were joined by american political strategist scottie nell hughes for her take on this developing story. >> west is supposed to be a place of peace. a place where democracy rules and where people express themselves not by violence , by at the ballot box. violence, by at the ballot box. and yet here we find ourselves in 2024, in an election where you've had multiple assassination attempts and threats against the president of united states, this is not a third world country where this becomes where coups and other ideas like this happen. no, this is happening in the united states of america . and i think states of america. and i think i speak on behalf of almost all americans that this just states how sad it is that our politics
9:05 am
have become so dangerous in today's world. and if we do not press a big i say the word reset. if we do not try to bring things back to civility in america today, that's going to continue to be felt in ripples in other countries in their election systems as well. we have got to start bringing common sense and sensibility and peace back to this process, or we're going to continue to have a just a complete mistrust and distrust of all elections, but especially something as high as for the oval office. >> and just lastly, can you tell us a little bit, a little bit about sovereign citizen, which is what the county sheriff has said, that the man in question was affiliated with, and this is someone who doesn't believe in government control . so, you government control. so, you know, is that a popular group is it an underground group? because we're not familiar with it here. >> i've never been heard of it before. and unfortunately, you have a lot of these fringe groups. and whether it's a fringe group on the right or the left, sadly enough, violence can be felt usually is pushed by both sides. so i don't know if this is an extreme progressive,
9:06 am
progressive group like we hear of antifa or if there's a progressive, an extreme conservative group like they say of proud boys. never heard of this group before coming into this, which means it's probably not necessarily popular. it's not necessarily popular. it's not necessarily popular. it's not necessarily definitely not in the circles that i would ever run into. that being said, it will be interesting to see as more research goes into this group as to how large and the extent they are , but at this extent they are, but at this point, they've never really been on the mainstream before. and i seriously doubt after this association that they'll ever have a chance after this. at least i hope not. >> look at some other stories coming into the newsroom on this monday morning . monday morning. >> four soldiers have been killed and more than 60 wounded in a drone strike on an army base in northern israel. lebanese militant group hezbollah have claimed responsibility for the attack, which is the biggest loss of life since the conflict began. well, the un peacekeeping mission has said that israeli tanks have forcibly entered its base in southern lebanon . base in southern lebanon. >> alex salmonds family have paid tribute to the former first minister of scotland after he

that statement was trying to say it had nothing to do with him. but my question is why make this a showcase for a portuguese artist? >> well, also just always comes back to that whole question of his operation inside number 10. who's calling the shots? who's running the show? sue gray was booted out for not seemingly doing a good enough job. morgan mcsweeney is in there, and now there's this latest hoo ha about there's this latest hoo ha about the artwork. is it just an omnishambles, for want of a better word? speaking of which, let's bring in katherine forster who's our political correspondent. she is who's our political correspondent.
