up later. >> good morning. it's a wednesday morning i'm eamonn holmes, i'm isabel webster, and this is gb news breakfast. we've got a situation now where the england football team is going to be managed by a german. >> oh , who would have thought? >> oh, who would have thought? >> oh, who would have thought? >> we wouldn't have thought it yesterday. we were talking about pep guardiola. >> you know what? nobody did. i think it took everybody by surprise. we're all thinking it's going to be pep guardiola. i'm trying to keep calm about the situation, thinking this is great, we're going to have pep and then within a few hours it starts leaking out that thomas tuchel is going to be the new england manager. >> yeah, but you said you said yesterday you were saying this is great. we're going to have p9p- is great. we're going to have pep. i think this guy's very, very talented. i agree. and as a manchester united supporter, i'm thinking if we're going to replace ten hag this, this is the guy to do it. >> what about the fact that he's
6:03 am
not a brit? you know he's not english. >> well, we've seen it before. we've seen it with sven sven—goran eriksson. of course. swedish. fabio capello, fabio capello, who was italian. neither of those worked out the way we wanted, but really it's a matter of getting the best person for the job. do you either go with an english manager and think, well, maybe it's not going to work? >> the thing is, the thing is they just don't give english or british managers a chance in the premier league. it is absolutely scandalous. and foreign ownership means that that's the way. that's the way it goes. i mean, our game is changing beyond belief. so many football stories. i mean, the alex ferguson situation there as well. but you've got people who just don't feel it, don't understand it. that this is their indigenous team. the feeling is not the same. >> yeah, i buy that as well. and i think in a perfect world, and the fa would say that as well. they would love to have an engush they would love to have an english manager. you know, it was interesting because i was looking at managers that have won the world cup for different countries. it's never been a manager that's not been from
6:04 am
that country. that's won the world cup. everybody always seems to be from there. would you get germany appointing an engush you get germany appointing an english manager? i don't know, but you know what? i'm not even going to. i don't really have a huge problem with that. i just think as long as england actually manage to win something, i think that's the most important thing. and then we can start shouting about nationalities if it does. >> i think if england could actually just play like the mighty northern ireland absolutely did last night, that's what you really want to see. >> that's the big story, isn't it? five goals against bulgaria, five nil. what's been going on there? >> have a bit of that. we will okay. my friend. so we'll poach michael o'neill. this as the as the day goes on. >> yeah. >> yeah. >> interesting stuff. absolutely. see you in 20 minutes. >> now it is the story that just keeps on going . the taylor swift keeps on going. the taylor swift freebie scandal has taken on a new lease of life after it's emerged that the prime minister did meet with swift at her wembley gig back in august, after granting her a security escort. >> big deal. if he's going to go to all that trouble, why wouldn't he meet her? of course
6:05 am
he's going to meet her after that. the question is, should he have granted the security escort at all? and the meeting doesn't isn't isn't a problem to me at all. she could be saying, i met the prime minister. she might be boasting about that . boasting about that. >> yeah, he probably would have met her. whether he'd granted her the blue lights or not. but the fact is, it's being reported right across the papers. even in the left wing media. it's front of the guardian this morning, which goes to show that this government just does not have a grip of their of their narrative at the moment. >> well, you could argue sue gray and she's now history. >> this is another dig at her. >> this is another dig at her. >> yeah. this is yeah. >> yeah. this is yeah. >> well yes. this has emerged that they spoke for ten minutes. and this was after she was given free tickets. he was given free tickets to one of her summer shows. >> okay. meanwhile, the chancellor has told cabinet ministers that plans to fill this £22 billion black hole. we talk about will only be enough to keep public services standing still . still. >> well, let's speak to our political correspondent, katherine forster about all of
6:06 am
this. and catherine, let's start, shall we, with this swift meeting with the prime minister and taylor swift. okay. so we have the argument about the security and the escort . this is security and the escort. this is the sort of escort that prince harry is going all the way to the courts to try and get, and he can't get his hands on it. and then we hear now that they've had this meeting as a result, it doesn't look good, does it? >> no, it really doesn't look good. and as you say, when this is on the front page, even of the guardian, then i think that sends a really worrying signal to the government, because we know now that the prime minister went to see taylor swift, not once, but twice, and the second time had this ten minute meeting with the star and himself and his family. and that followed the police granting this vip police escort to her following interventions from her mother and following threats, basically to cancel the concert. she, of course, had cancelled her
6:07 am
concert in austria because of security fears. now the police are supposed to be operationally independent. they originally didn't feel it was necessary, but it's become clear that figures very high in government got involved. the attorney general, the home office were involved , sue gray was involved involved, sue gray was involved and so the list goes on. so i think the optics of this for the government are not good at all at a time that it's trying to move on from the sort of scandals of freebie gate dresses, money for spectacles, free tickets and the news. just the bad news just seems to keep on coming . on coming. >> and meanwhile, catherine, tell us a little bit about this plan from the chancellor to try and raise 40 billion in the budget. now, not just the 20 or 22 billion of the black hole ? 22 billion of the black hole? >> yes. just when we thought it
6:08 am
was a £22 billion black hole, they had to fill, we hear now that rachel reeves is looking to get 40 billion somehow or other. so this budget coming on october the 30th is going to be extremely difficult, i suspect, because the £22 billion will just keep a sort of where we are and without raising considerably more money, there's going to be very, very real cuts to departments austerity. if you like something that labour promised they would not bring in. and to be honest, it was clear well before the election that whoever was in charge was going to either have to make substantial cuts to public services or raise taxes by a large amount, but nobody wanted to talk about it, apart from the institute for fiscal studies, who kept flagging it. the
