stood trial at blake, who is 40, stood trial at the old bailey after shooting the old bailey after shooting the 24 year old through the front windscreen of a car. the car had been used as a getaway vehicle in a shooting the previous evening, and was hemmed in by police cars after an officer recognised its registration number. mr kaba drove backwards and forwards, trying to ram his way free. mr blake told jurors he believed one of his colleagues was about to die, and so he opened fire to stop the car. mr kaba's family have said in a statement today we are devastated the not guilty verdict leaves us with the deep pain of injustice , adding to the pain of injustice, adding to the unbearable sorrow we have felt since chris was killed. commissioner of the metropolitan police, sir mark rowley, said this in a statement a short while ago . while ago. >> over the past two years, sergeant blake has paid a huge personal and professional sacrifice and this has been an incredibly difficult time for him and his family. and he has acted with professionalism and dignity throughout . this case dignity throughout. this case has had an enormous impact on

many chris kaba's family and friends continue to grieve the loss of a loved one, and today will be enormously difficult for them . them. >> elsewhere, the health secretary has said that this is a once in a generation opportunity to have a debate on the long term future of the nhs. speaking to gb news katherine forster, wes streeting said that a national conversation about the health service can put the focus back on community care. let's listen to what he had to say. >> the reason why this national conversation is so important is that while we're getting the nhs back on its feet and this is a once in a generation opportunity to have a real debate about the long term future of our nhs, and we've come in as a government with a very clear sense of direction about what we want to achieve. we want to get care out of the hospital, into the community, the nhs, as much as a neighbourhood health service, as a national health service . a national health service. >> and finally, tonight, a 25 year old woman has pleaded guilty to assault today after throwing a milkshake at reform uk leader nigel farage during

brought against martin blake has sparked fury amongst firearms officers, with dozens downing tools in an apparent protest and the army being put on standby to plug the army being put on standby to plug the gap. joining me now is gb news national reporter charlie peters, with the latest charlie. >> well, chris, it took just three hours for the jury to return this verdict this afternoon after a three week trial in which the crown prosecution service opened their arguments by saying that martin blake , the sergeant who fired blake, the sergeant who fired that fatal shot, could have been frustrated or angry when he took it. they also said the most senior prosecutor in the land , senior prosecutor in the land, tom sir tom casey. he said , sir tom sir tom casey. he said, sir tom sir tom casey. he said, sir tom little kc sorry. he said that the decision was taken at a moment when there was no immediate threat to life to his officers around him. well, martin blake denied that he was angry when he when he took that shot and he relied on the

footage that was played out regularly at court to show that he had grounds to take that shot, that it was his reasonable and justifiable self belief that his colleagues were at risk of having their lives being taken by chris kaba's car as it made an attempt to escape from that blockade. other officers in the trial being cross—examined by the prosecution and the defence teams, said that they felt as though their lives were at risk. others also said that they would have made the same decision made by martin blake , a sergeant who by martin blake, a sergeant who was overwhelmed with emotion when the verdict was delivered. but the kaba family have today said that they are devastated. they say the not guilty verdict leaves us with the deep pain of injustice, adding to the unbearable sorrow that we have felt since chris was killed. the acquittal of martin blake isn't just a failure for our family, but for all those affected by police violence. we won't be silenced. we are deeply grateful to everyone who stood by us and fought for justice. well, the justice given by the jury today is not guilty. sir mark rowley

said that he worries about the lack of support that officers are facing for doing their best. he said that firearms officers do a vital job. he pointed to the hundreds of weapons they took off the streets in the last yean took off the streets in the last year, and he said that they were always acting to protect life rather than take it. but the met commissioner added that any fatal use of force understandably prompts huge concern among communities , concern among communities, particularly in the black community. now, one police officer told me this evening that the lack of trust caused by this incident was generated by chris kaba driving his car at police officers and risking their lives. after a three week trial, sergeant martin blake is not guilty . not guilty. >> charlie peters, thank you. moving on now, the government has launched a public consultation on the future of our national health service in england as part of its ten year plan to save the nhs. it will

>> good evening. >> good evening. >> how many nhs resets ten year plans did you see in your decades as an mp.7 >> decades as an mp? >> well, all too many and i'm sure ministers are well intentioned, but i would advise this government they need a very clear sense of direction , and clear sense of direction, and they need a detailed plan before they need a detailed plan before they embark on this. i find it staggering that after 14 years in opposition, when they could have had these long conversations with patients and staff , they didn't get further staff, they didn't get further with their ideas on how you actually achieve the better results. we all want to see. i mean, the secretary of state says some of the right things. he said that huge amounts of money have gone in and lots of extra staff have been recruited in recent years. that's an important admission. and he says we're not getting enough back for it. it means that the senior management direction of the health service has been wanting the staff. i'm sure, are all working very hard, but we don't have the right staff in the right places, and we have some very long waiting lists with medical teams under too much

pressure. so he needs to get on immediately. this winter with getting the staff and the money directed into the places which are going to make the difference so that patients don't have to wait so long. and so we get better results from this huge commitment of resource. >> why do you think the tories couldn't do this in now 14 years of government? i mean, the funds went up going into 1504 00:08
