alone, with calmer weather allowing a sharp rise in crossings. officials are now predicting up to 40,000 migrants could cross by the end of this yean could cross by the end of this year, despite the labour government's pledge to tackle the crisis. >> and, they say smash the gangs. >> a home office spokesperson has called the latest migrant deaths this week a devastating tragedy, as people smuggling operations continue to escalate and another breaking line just into us from belfast crown court this hour, a life sentence has been handed down to a catfisher in the uk's largest ever catfishing case. alexander mccartney, described as a prolific online predator, has been sentenced today to life in prison and must serve a minimum sentence of 20 years. the 26 year old has been sentenced to life at belfast crown court for what were described as a series of depraved crimes. the judge , of depraved crimes. the judge, mr justice o'hara, said that mccartney's abuse scarred the childhoods of his young victims.

breaking story with dawn neesom and mark white. >> thank you very much, sam. and as you've just heard, we do indeed have an exclusive live breaking story for you. the number of channel migrants arriving in the uk this year has overtaken the total for the whole of 2023. shocking statistics here. joining me now is our home and security editor mark white to explain. well i mean what are the numbers first of all mark. >> well the number for the whole of last year was 29,437. just in the last few minutes we have overtaken that number 29,451. after a boat arrived. and you can see our exclusive images of the border force vessel defender arriving at dover harbour just in the last few minutes , with 55 in the last few minutes, with 55 channel migrants on board. and

this was one of six small boats that have arrived. so far today, with about 300. there is another border force vessel that is about to arrive at dover harbour as well , with another boatload. as well, with another boatload. so 300, more than 300 that have arrived today. add that to the 509 who arrived yesterday, 292 the day before. 149 the day before that. we're at more than 1250 for just the past four days. and we're now, of course, in conditions in the channel where the weather is not great out there, it's 20 mile per hour winds. according to our kent producer, who has got these incredible images for you of the latest boatload coming off there. he latest boatload coming off
