british farming inheritance tax relief for farms will be limited to £1 million. the family farm tax, as it's now being called, will mean that farms that have beenin will mean that farms that have been in families will in all likelihood close. it threatens food security. it's also an attack on british culture. really, isn't it rural british culture? this has been slammed by pretty much everybody. jeremy clarkson urged farmers to look after themselves for five years and cling on until this quotes. shower of a labour government have voted out . kirstie allsopp have voted out. kirstie allsopp said that it was appalling decision. labour don't understand rural voters. but where was the environment secretary when all of this was going on? it's quite big this, isn't it? rural affairs firmly under his brief. this is massive. you think that the environment secretary, minister for rural affairs would be all over this, wouldn't you? where was he? where was he? oh, he's 5000 miles away in colombia. an environmental conference. oh,

good.i environmental conference. oh, good. i mean, it's such a terrible luck, isn't it? steve reid, jet setting off around the world so he can grandstand about being a world leader , tackling being a world leader, tackling climate change. well, right here at home, british farmers are going to the wall. i hope you enjoy the colombian jolly , mr enjoy the colombian jolly, mr reid. that just sums them up, though, doesn't it? totally obsessed with how they look on the world stage when the people who really matter, british citizens, british farmers get shafted. let's go and see the views of my wonderful panel. we've got political consultants, suzanne evans. we have got the spectator's james heale and former labour party adviser matthew laza. suzanne, i mean, this is a bit of a shocker. i wonder whether or not we are just days away from farmers descending on downing street and spreading manure everywhere. >> well, i really hope so, patrick, because, you know, i watched the budget yesterday with growing horror, but when this was announced, i felt absolutely despondent. i live in

rural shropshire, right at the heart of a beautiful farming community. you know, i know farmers. i know the people that work with them , the vets, their work with them, the vets, their workers, their kids , and they workers, their kids, and they really care about what they do. they're passionate about what they do. they look after their farms, they look after their animals. but most of those farms are probably worth more than £1 million. when you talk about we've watched clarkson's farm, you know, we know that one piece of agricultural equipment can cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. and of course, those are also taken into the value of that asset for inheritance tax purposes. now, it is nonsense. the 1 million threshold is so, so low. it's shameful. >> well, i mean, this this could backfire on labour, could it? not really. >> yeah, massively. >> yeah, massively. >> because labour of course made a huge pitch to rural voters. we've got more than 100 labour mps with rural constituencies and of course it's the very first budget, the first chance for labour to frame and set out their priorities. and it appears farmers are one of the clear losers and not just in terms of tax changes, but also spending as well. defra is one of the seven losing departments from this spending review, and i think it's clear that, you know,
3:09 am
as you say, the response to environment secretary there may do more with less. it just seems that they're very happy to let some places go to the wall while handing out money for others. that's all right, though. >> he's got his colombian holiday, but he's not going on holiday. >> is it a conference? look. okay, let's, let's let's play a little quiz. how much? how many farms do you think were covered? half £1 billion worth of this agricultural property relief. and how many farms do you think were took up? half of the cost of it. 63. it is nonsense to say this is going to take in the average family this is going to take in the averag
