first ever black leader of the party. in her acceptance speech, she said the tories have to be honest about the fact that they made mistakes and they let standards slip. she also praised the outgoing leader, rishi sunak, for getting the party through a tough time. >> it is the most enormous honour to be elected to this role, to lead the party that i love, the party that has given me so much. i hope that i will be able to repay that debt. i also want to thank rishi. no one could have worked harder in such difficult times. rishi, thank you for everything you did. we all wish you and your wonderful family the very best for the future . future. >> while the prime minister has congratulated the new tory leader, the labour party chair, ellie reeves, says she's worried about the policies that kemi badenoch would advocate as leader of the opposition. ms reeves criticised the conservative party for dragging out the leadership contest and

ever. some of your thoughts. post your comments gbnews.com/yoursay . so earlier gbnews.com/yoursay. so earlier today, the former trade and business secretary kemi badenoch was declared the new conservative party leader. she beat former immigration minister robert jenrick in the race among tory members following a lengthy contest. now kemi received over 53,000 votes, whilst robert jenrick got just 41,000. and this comes as almost four months after the tories devastating general election defeat, which then triggered former leader rishi sunak's resignation. well, joining me now is gb news political correspondent olivia utley. she's outside conservative party hq. olivia, thank you very much for joining us. have you managed to speak to anybody around that area and what is the general gist or the what is the general gist or the what are people feeling about kemi becoming the leader ? kemi becoming the leader? >> well, kemi badenoch left the

building about an hour ago. >> she was not willing to speak to me or any of the other reporters on the ground here, which continues a bit of a theme of this leadership campaign. jenrick has been all over the airwaves , whereas kemi badenoch airwaves, whereas kemi badenoch has been much, much quieter. we've also seen, although it hasn't been possible to speak to quite a few of her most loyal supporters, people like andrew bowie, laura trott, helen whately , lots and lots of whately, lots and lots of ministers who worked and former ministers who worked and former ministers who worked under kemi badenoch have supported her. and that's probably a good sign for the new leader of the conservative party. there have been whispers among conservative party watchers that kemi, kemi badenoch wasn't sort of temperamentally well suited to the job of leader of the opposition. she's known as a little bit ratty and difficult to work with, but the very fact that so many of her former colleagues did back her is probably a confident sign. it is going to be an uphill struggle for mrs. badenoch. she won this vote with about 56% of the membership. now, that's not

nearly as resounding a victory as boris johnson won in 2019. in fact, it's quite similar to what liz truss won back in 2022. the other issue is that the conservative party parliamentary party is also pretty split, whereas in previous contests, liz rishi sunak got a bigger majority than liz truss, among parliamentary among the parliamentary among the parliamentary party and boris johnson had the lion's share of the parliamentary party. this time 1502 00:09:27,0
