to and today has been a bit dramatic too. i think we've seen the government announce a the first increase in eight years in tuition fees for students going up in higher education, going up from £9,250 frozen that way for eight years, until next year, when they go up by inflation 9000 to £9535. the maintenance allowance also goes up for those for students who are on low incomes and need help with their living costs. so a big moment there for this government and we'll see how that plays out amongst students who notoriously do protest quite a lot and will be upset by this. not least because those who supported sir keir starmer to be labour leader back in 2020. he promised then get this he would support the abolition of tuition fees and invest in lifelong learning. so he's been on his own journey, as they say in politics, from wanting to abolish tuition fees to increasing them for the first time in eight years. as soon as he becomes prime minister, that

one will run. and but to that the tory party has been getting its own house in order. after we saw kevin badenoch beat robert jenrick at the weekend to be the new conservative party leader, i can confirm moments ago that robert jenrick, the individual who was beaten by kemi badenoch, is the new shadow justice secretary. that's interesting. it means he's got control of a review of membership of the european convention on human rights, and we all know where he sits on that issue. of course, he was formerly an immigration minister in the last government. other names that we'll need to know more of in in coming months and weeks are laura trott. she's the new shadow education secretary. neil o'brien, the new shadow education minister. plus nigel huddleston and dominic johnson. lord johnson . those are johnson. lord johnson. those are two new shadow chairs of the party. also, rebecca harris is chief whip. i also can say that i've talked to some senior people in the party's finances. they say that donations are
