go away . go away. >> it's 9 pm. this. this is patrick christys tonight with me. >> bev turner it is isolationist. >> it is morally unacceptable and politically impractical. >> justin welby has gone. he's resigned as archbishop of canterbury. but why did it take him so long to go.7 and canterbury. but why did it take him so long to go? and how does that amount of child abuse go unchallenged for so long? also, all those young girls that are told, no, you can't. football is a better place with us all in it. of course it is. she's right. but is that place match of the day on a saturday night? also , starmer's been schmoozing

also, starmer's been schmoozing with the taliban at cop29 and setting a bizarrely specific target of reducing emissions in this country by 81%. >> uk's 2035 nbc this country by 81%. >> uk's 2035 ndc target to reduce all greenhouse gas emissions by at least 81% on 1990 levels. >> he certainly doesn't set the room alight. he says he won't force brits to change their behaviour to reach net zero targets, but no petrol or diesel cars, air source heat pumps instead of boilers and paving over farm fields with solar panels does that sound? hands off to you? oh, and this very show made the news today. keir starmer was forced to respond to this clip of former labour adviser john this clip of former labour adviserjohn mcternan this clip of former labour adviser john mcternan from this clip of former labour adviserjohn mcternan from last night. >> if people if people if people are so upset that they want to go on the streets and spray slurry on them, then we don't need the small farmers on my panel tonight, it's the

minister keir starmer has also distanced himself from comments made by former labour adviser john mcternan, who said britain doesn't need small farmers. when asked about the comments at today's cop29 q&a, starmer said he was absolutely committed to supporting our farmers. however, this statement has been seen as controversial following the budget last month in which labour introduced a tax of 20% on inherited farming assets above £1 million. earlier, a sheep and cattle farmer told gb news this new tax will devastate many family businesses. >> everybody agrees that in a, you know, a sound democracy, we need to pay taxes because we understand that public sector needs supporting. but i think the critical thing the government has completely missed on this is that there is no margin left in farming and british farming. we're constantly told as farmers that we need high welfare livestock systems. we need high regard for the environment and we're achieving all those things. if you look at the global level, but there is still no margin to pay but there is still no margin to pay surplus towards taxes, particularly this sort of

draconian inheritance tax, which will frankly finish off many, many family businesses, terminally ill adults who are expected to die within six months would be able to request assistance to end their own life. >> that's under the proposed end of life bill. but someone with a disability or mental health issue would not be considered eligible. the controversial bill has raised some concerns that people could feel pressured into ending their lives prematurely. mps will have their first vote on the proposal on the 29th of november, a once a day pill that could help tens of thousands of people give up cigarettes and prevent thousands of smoking related deaths each year will be rolled out on the nhs. the pill works by tackling nicotine cravings and also helps with withdrawal symptoms such as irritability and trouble sleeping. official estimates say it could help more than 85,000 people give up smoking over the next five years. and finally, gary lineker will step down as

host of match of the day. that's at the end of the current season. the 63 year old former england striker has presented match of the day since 1999, but now mark chapman, gabby logan and alex scott are the current front runners to replace the former england star. those are the latest gb news headlines for now. i'm sophie reaper more from me in the next hour for the very latest gb news direct to your smartphone, sign up to news alerts by scanning the qr code, or go to gb news .com forward slash alerts . slash alerts. >> very good evening. it's bevin for patrick this evening . so the for patrick this evening. so the archbishop of canterbury, justin welby, has finally resigned today after he came under fire for his handling of the church of england's biggest child abuse scandal ever. a scathing report released this week criticised his handling of the allegations

against the former barrister and evangelical christian john smyth, who sexually abused hundreds of young children in the 1970s and 80s. the independent report has found that the abuse could have been exposed four years earlier if the archbishop had contacted the authorities. justin welby has said today that it had become clear that he must take personal and institutional responsibility for what he described as the long and retraumatising period after he was informed of allegations in 2013, but failed to act on them just hours before he finally resigned. the prime minister refused to back him for the second time in a row. several high profile church of england bishops had also called for welby to go. so how were that many people, including justin welby , either unaware or justin welby, either unaware or willing to turn a blind eye to the flogging of boys that were so bad they were forced to wear nappies to absorb the blood. let's get the thoughts. thoughts

of my panel this evening. i'm joined here in the studio by esther krakue bill rammell and stephen wolfe. good to see you guys. stephen wolfe. good to see you guys . thank stephen wolfe. good to see you guys. thank you for being here this evening. it's not a cheerful topic to start with, is it? it's really grim, bill. what else can be done for these victims? is it going to be enough that welby's stepped aside today? >> well, look, i'm not a practising christian, although i consider myself a christian. and i've always thought justin welby was a decent guy. but this incident, this series of incidents and the report that has come out demonstrate a shocking degree of an abdication of leadership. >> you know, he knew about it in 2013, never met any of the victims for seven years. >> you know, he didn't report it to the police. he didn't report it to the authorities in south africa. it is absolutely shocking in terms of what's
9:08 pm
done.i shocking in terms of what's done. i mean, one, the new choice of the archbishop of canterbury has got to be whiter than white. but i think there's got to be a complete overhaul of governance within the church of england. if you look at one of the key recommendations of the making report, which came out last week, it's that they need an independent body to oversee safeguarding within the church of england and what that effectively says is there's absolutely no confidence on the church leadership carrying out those responsibilities. >> but why is that, esther? yeah. >> i mean , i think the thing is >> i mean, i think the thing is just to go back, just to clarify, it's clear that he he knew about the allegations in 1982. so it became it was presented to him . all the presented to him. all the evidence was presented to him in 2013, but he actually was aware of the rumours and was actually roommates with the person who published this report back in the 1980s. so this has been going on for a very long time. but i just want to point out the damage that justin welby has done to the institution. and also just in his role as archbishop of canterbury, you know, he lost a lot of moral

authority by wading into clearly political issues that was very ill advised because it alienated members of the public. and this was a big problem for the church that saw sort of church going as reparations. well, yes. and the rwanda scheme, for example, where he made overt comments without offering an alternative. if you're going to get into politics, you're going you're going to have to choose one side or another. so even even in his role as as the archbishop of canterbury, he did a lot of damage because he veered away from what was expected of him and became quite a political actor , so much so that actually actor, so much so that actually any kind of interventions he made weren't really covered in the 1519 00:09:31,872 --
