report that revealed a cover up spanning decades. it comes as victims of john smyth, who is thought to be the most prolific abuser associated with the church, called for further resignations from senior clergy members involved in the scandal. justin welby announced yesterday that he was standing down after an independent review concluded smyth could have been brought to justice if he formally reported him to the police more than a decade ago . the post office will decade ago. the post office will set out a transformative plan in a bid to fix its finances, amid reports that hundreds of branches could close down. the industry shake up may result in the closure of 115 loss making branches wholly owned by the post office, putting more than 1000 jobs at risk. post office chairman nigel wilson is expected to make the announcement at the company's headquarters in london later today. addressing postmasters

9:37 am
report, of course, was. it took him a week or so to go. >> canterbury was talking, talking about archbishop of canterbury. >> yes. sorry. and now the search begins for a successor. the review also said that welby could and should have reported john smythe abuse of boys and young men in 2013, and he didn't. >> but what happens now? how? and when will a new archbishop be appointed? >> well, it's a long process and can take a very long time. we're joined by the former conservative mp ann widdecombe, who is now, of course, a support member of reform. and morning to you. good morning . it occurs to you. good morning. it occurs to me that it could take between 6 to 9 months to appoint a successor to justin welby. what if there is a major state event which requires the archbishop to officiate ? can he really do officiate? can he really do that? does he not have to stand down immediately and alternative arrangements be made? >> well, i think if that situation arose which you've described , there would be some
9:38 am
described, there would be some discussion between the palace and the government and the church, and it might well be decided that somebody else would stand in for him or whatever. >> i do not know. that is purely speculative. what we do know is that the archbishop is going and therefore a successor has to be found. we also know that other clergy have been implicated in this report, and i think it's necessary really, to clear up the aftermath of the report first, before we move on to or before the curve moves on to look at the succession. and i think it's important that welby stays there until all that is sorted out, because the macon report, you're quite right. >> and the macon report found two other bishops who's named two other bishops who's named two bishops who should have who were aware of the information in 2013 could have. and should have got involved with the police and didn't do anything. do they have to go to.
9:39 am
>> i think it's got to be decided on on an individual basis. there is some a rather overlooked line from the archbishop when he said that in 2013 he was informed of what was going on and he was also told that it had been reported to the police. so, you know, if other bishops were told the same thing, they may have thought, well, you know, there's nothing for us to do. it's now all in the right hands, but it wasn't. it never was. >> what needs to be learnt? and particularly by the anglican church. but also any organisation, any religious organisation, any religious organisation which might still have a culture of brushing these kind of issues under the table in order not to embarrass anybody or cause any shame on the organisation. >> oh, look, first of all, it's not just religious institutions which you implied. in fact , that which you implied. in fact, that you didn't which you implied. in fac
