have pushed the uk towards the bottom of the g7 growth table for the third quarter of the yeah for the third quarter of the year. responding to today's figures, shadow chancellor mel stride says they're extremely disappointing. meanwhile, rachel reeves says she's not satisfied with the figures . with the figures. >> not content with the gdp numbers that we've seen today . numbers that we've seen today. if everything was fine, we wouldn't be taking the measures that we are to try and unlock the growth that i know exists in the growth that i know exists in the economy, but hasn't really been felt either in living standards or in the competitiveness of our economy these last few years. that's why in my mansion house speech last night, i set out a number of measures to unlock long term patient capital from our pension funds to get better returns to savers, but crucially, to free up investment to invest in, start up and scale up businesses, and in the opportunities for infrastructure investment in britain. >> rachel reeves told city chiefs last night that she plans to create pension mega funds

priority when it comes to looking after our pensioners ? looking after our pensioners? >> well, we can now get the view. excuse me , of the chair of view. excuse me, of the chair of the women against state pension inequality, which is waspi. angela madden. angela, is this madness? does this sound sensible to you ? sensible to you? >> good morning nana. good morning ben. and i think it shows a bit of innovative thinking on behalf of the chancellor, the government , this chancellor, the government, this particular government has put growth at the centre of their their whole campaign. and in to order fund that growth, we need different sorts of ideas. and i think this idea sounds to me like a good one. it's utilising pubuc like a good one. it's utilising public pension funds both to get more for the pensioners and for the for the states , because the for the states, because there are a lot of projects that need to be funded. so, so yes, i

think broadly it's a good idea . think broadly it's a good idea. >> read though about the risk involved because, i mean, investors and economists would suggest that by putting all your eggs into one basket and not diversifying your investments, and i guess your, your bets and your gambles, you're taking a bigger risk. yes, there may be bigger risk. yes, there may be bigger returns, but if those investments go wrong or don't go as planned, your returns won't be as lucrative . be as lucrative. >> yes, the risks would have to be managed. ben, i believe that mr reeves intends to create eight different funds so presumably each fund would go into a different government based objective. you know , or based objective. you know, or project . now, obviously, the project. now, obviously, the biggest failure in government projects in recent years has been hs2. had that been invested in. yes, that probably would have been a dire mistake for any investment fund that chose to

investment fund that chose to invest in that. so they would need to be guarantees. but there's so much government work that needs to be done. you know, in the green energy company, in rebuilding our failing schools and council buildings and all of those sorts of things. i think, you know, so long as it's what we would call blue chip or safe investments, then that's a reasonable way to go. and those funds are actually being created and used in order to benefit our 1515 00:09:30,520 --> 00
