anneliese keir starmer. cancel your government's inheritance plans when it comes to farming, so should they or not. and it's also time to reset relationships between the police and the public. there's been an extra £500 million allocated to that, but is it enough? and did you know that today's international men's day? no. well, i'll forgive you because it's barely received any coverage at all. but get this across the world, a man dies by suicide. every single minute of every single day. that's 60 men dead by the time my program will end. so we need to talk about men, their roles in society, their often vilification of them. they're often denied access to their children, their mental health, and so much more. there is lots to discuss . have and so much more. there is lots to discuss. have you and so much more. there is lots to discuss . have you also seen to discuss. have you also seen in scotland? have you seen that

the winter fuel allowance plans u—turned? what do you make to that? keeping me company to get stuck into all of that and more. my stuck into all of that and more. my panel, charlie downs, the political commentator and matthew laza, the former labour advisor. but before we get stuck in, let's cross live for the 6:00 news headlines . 6:00 news headlines. >> thank you michelle. the time is just after 6:00. and these are your latest headlines . are your latest headlines. farming leaders have accused the chancellor of refusing to engage with them over controversial changes to inheritance tax. that's as thousands of farmers have marched on westminster today. have marched on westminster today . first unveiled in rachel today. first unveiled in rachel reeves budget, the plans to impose inheritance tax on farms worth more than £1 million have sparked fury among rural communities. however, environment secretary steve reed says due to inheriting a £22 million black hole from the previous government, labour had no choice. >> this government's commitment to farming and to farmers is absolute. that's why we've allocated £5 billion to farming
6:02 pm
in the budget. that's the biggest amount of money in our country's history for sustainable food production. but we have to plug that £22 billion black hole in our public finances. otherwise we can't fix our public services like the broken national health service. so it's only right that we've had to ask the wealthiest landowners and the biggest farms to pay their fair share. but i would emphasise only around 500 farms will be affected. the vast majority of farmers will pay no more under the new scheme than they do under the current one. >> speaking at the protests earlier today, tv presenter and farm owner jeremy clarkson earlier today, tv presenter and farm ownerjeremy clarkson said rachel reeves has used a blunderbuss to hit farmers. >> if she'd have wanted to take out the likes of james dyson and investment bankers and so on, she would have used a sniper's rifle , but she's used rifle, but she's used a blunderbuss and she's hit all this lot. it was as i understand it, it was a very rushed, last

minute decision . and i think, minute decision. and i think, you know, we all make mistakes in life. and i think it's time for them to say, you know what? we've cocked this one up a bit and back down. that's my view. >> meanwhile, following widespread snow and ice today, the uk is preparing for further bad weather over the coming days. a new ice warning has now come into force for much of southern england, the midlands and eastern wales, which will remain in place until 10:00 tomorrow morning. that's alongside several other warnings for snow and ice issued across the uk, as the met office has issued warnings that vehicles could be stranded , power cuts could be stranded, power cuts may occur and rural areas could be cut off in order to prepare. many areas of the uk will be putting measures such as gritters in place in to order minimise any further disruption. earlier, a councillor in north yorkshire spoke to gb news about the county's preparations for the county's preparations for the predicted snowfall . the predicted snowfall. >> winter operation is in full swing . we're working around the swing. we're working around the clock to keep our roads open and safe for the north yorkshire public. we have a team of 200
6:04 pm
people involved in our winter maintenance programme, 100 gritters, snow blowers, farming contractors as well who are working to support us in the most remotest parts of our very vast county. >> for now, those latest gb news headunes >> for now, those latest gb news headlines i'm sophie reaper more from me in the next hour for the very latest gb news direct to your smartphone, sign up to news alerts by scanning the qr code, or go to gb news .com forward slash alerts . slash alerts. >> thank you very much for that, sophie and michelle dewberry. and i'm keeping you company until 7:00 this evening. alongside me, my panel, i've got charlie downs, a political commentator, and matthew lazer, the former labour advisor. good evening gentlemen. good evening. good evening. welcome. tonight, as ever, every single one of you at home. what's on your mind today ? boy, it's been quite
6:05 pm
today? boy, it's been quite a day, hasn't it? you can get in touch with me all the usual ways. email me gbviews@gbnews.com. you can tweet or x me or of course you can go to the website gbnews.com/yoursay where you can talk to me and to each others. and if you're going out, don't worry, you can take me on your radio with you. what a treat. so much that we need to discuss tonight. have you seen what's gone on in scotland when it comes, when it comes to the cuts of the winter fuel allowance that has been u—turned. i'll come to on that. in what? probably just after this, actually. i'll talk to you about farmers first of all, because farmers, it was indeed farmer v starmer today , wasn't it. starmer today, wasn't it. farmers from across the land there descended on to central london. why all about this situation when it comes to the inheritance tax? jeremy clarkson, he was there. he was very loud, very present . let's very loud, very present. let's listen to what he had to say. >> do you want to finish, if i may, with a message to the government? i do not a shouty one. it's this for the sake of
6:06 pm
everybody here and for all the farmers who are stuck at home today , paralysed by a fog of today, paralysed by a fog of despair over what's been foisted upon them. i beg of the government to be big to accept that this was rushed through. it wasn't thought out. and it's a mistake. that's the big thing to do. admit it. and back down. >> thank you everybody. >> thank you everybody. >> yes. go on clarkson i can hear many of you cheering from your surface . let's listen to your surface. let's listen to keir starmer. >> very important for me to keep making the case that it's only farms and assets over £3 million. in a typical case of a of parents wanting to pass on to their, their children . and their, their children. and therefore for that reason, i'm confident that the vast majority of farms will not be affected. i grew up in a rural area. i know
6:07 pm
firsthand that rural areas, farming communities, they do need the investment that we put in the budget . in the budget. >> i mean, this is all turned into a bit of a mess because according to the treasury, hardly any farms will be affected. according to things like the national farmers union and even defra, most of them apparently will. charlie downs, what do you think should happen next? >> well, if you look at the groups and institutions that this government has taken aim at over the few months that it's beenin over the few months that it's been in power, who's it been? it's been pensioners, it's been pubs and now it's farmers . this pubs and now it's farmers. this is the, you know, the lifeblood, the guts, the bones of britain that they are hacking away at here. and what we've seen today, these scenes out of london, especially with clarkson delivering that quite rousing speech, it's like something out of some sort of historical drama, because then you have, on the other hand, this cold, unfeeling figure of keir starmer just ploughing on ahead with his with his plans completely disconnected from the public in general and seemingly unwilling to compromise on any of his highly destructive policies. >> do you think it should
6:08 pm
compromise on this one? >> i don't know whether he will, because obviously he should. well, i think he absolutely should. i think he should walk the whole thing back entirely. but we've seen that they are to prepared go back on certain policies, like for example, the smoking ban in pubs. but this to me, this particular issue with the farmers seems to be far more fundamental in a way that i don't think many people are talking about. because again, you look at the priorities of this government and it does seem to be to transform the united kingdom even further than it already has been into just an economic zone, without much in the way of culture or a sense of home or a sense of belonging. as we spoke about. actually, last time i was on, i was on your s
