9:33 am
ourselves against russian terrorist attacks, he is expanding the threats. the western leaders understand the value of these threats and understand that the only language that russia understands is the language of force, the language of power. and this is why we keep asking to continue strengthening ukraine in our defence against russia. and its terrible aggression. >> police in laos have detained the manager and owner of a hostel in connection with the death of six people from suspected methanol poisoning. it was confirmed yesterday that brit simon white was one of those to have died as a result of the incident. those who were poisoned are believed to have been served drinks tainted with methanol . the ofgem energy price methanol. the ofgem energy price cap has been announced this morning and it's bad news for households. the regulator has revealed that as of january 1st, the energy bills of an average household will increase by i.2%, a rise of £21. given

household will increase by 1.2%, a rise of £21. given the 10% hike in october, many will have been hoping to see the cap decrease in the new year. so the news of a further rise this morning will likely come as a blow to homeowners across the uk and as storm babet approaches, many around the uk have experienced freezing temperatures overnight. the storm is set to reach the uk tomorrow, with the met office predicting it will bring heavy rain, strong winds and disruptive snow across the weekend. much of the uk has already experienced snow this week and as bert gets closer, the forecaster is now warning of potential flooding, power outages and travel disruption . outages and travel disruption. those are the latest gb news headunes those are the latest gb news headlines for now. i'm sophie reaper more from me in the next half an hour for the very latest gb news direct to your smartphone, sign up to news alerts by scanning the qr code, or go to gbnews.com/alerts .

or go to gbnews.com/alerts. >> good morning. hello and welcome! this is britain's newsroom. we are live across the united kingdom on gb news with cameron walker and me. >> nana akua wonderful to be here now. sir keir starmer has backed the international criminal court's arrest warrant for benjamin netanyahu. but questions remain over whether the israeli prime minister would be arrested if he chose to visit the united kingdom. >> now, the home secretary this morning had this to say. have listen. >> the uk is a signatory of the international criminal court, so international criminal court, so i just wanted to ask if you can confirm that he would be arrested if he came to the uk . arrested if he came to the uk. >> well, that's not a matter for me as home secretary in the independent, the international criminal court is of course, independent and we respect its independence and the role that it has to play . it has to play. >> i mean, the home secretary is in charge of the police force here in the united kingdom. so it's interesting that she's saying it's not a matter for
9:36 am
her. i suppose she would argue that it's perhaps the foreign secretary's david lammy's role and the justice secretary just shifting things around. >> she's the home secretary, and she looks after policing and things like that. so there has to be she has to have an opinion either way. i suppose what it is they're on the spot. and often when they're on the spot, they never answer the questions. i mean, i was at prime minister's questions on wednesday and again, it was just an exercise of obfuscation. they don't answer the questions or they push things around, and i just don't think that's good enough. >> and yvette cooper will probably not want to trump the prime minister if the prime minister had perhaps a different answer to what she was going to say, she won't want to undermine him, is what i'm trying to point out. but then, of course, we've had in the last hour or so that simon harris, the prime minister of ireland, say that benjamin netanyahu would be arrested if he came onto irish soil to put the british government into a bit of a predicament. >> but i just don't see really the reasoning why he should be arrested. he's trying to defend his people as what people would argue. others may say that he's argue. others may say that he's a war criminal. i don't think he is. i don't, you know, what do
9:37 am
you do? and that's the thing. people don't answer these questions, but let's cross live to westminster, where our political correspondent olivia utley joins us. so this morning, olivia yvette cooper said it wasn't a matter for her. when asked with regard to whether or not benjamin netanyahu would be arrested. what do we know about the icc and what have they said ? the icc and what have they said? they said. >> well, i think the uk government has found itself in a very, very tricky diplomatic situation. keir starmer said earlier today that he would respect the icc's judgement if it was ratified by a uk court. obviously implying that benjamin netanyahu would be arrested if he visited the uk. now he sort of had to say that the uk is one of had to say that the uk is one of the main signatories of the icc and actually the chief prosecutor of the icc , who has prosecutor of the icc, who has issued this arrest warrant is british. so it would be awkward
9:38 am
for keir starmer to dismiss the icc's ruling out of hand. but then a couple of hours later, we hear from the home secretary, yvette cooper , who refuses to be yvette cooper, who refuses to be drawn on whether or not benjamin netanyahu would be arrested. i think, cameron, you're probably right. cooper probably doesn't want to undermine what keir starmer is saying. but it does sound as though there is a difference of opinion between the two. as for yvette cooper saying that it's not her job as home secretary. well , the truth home secretary. well, the truth is it probably is her job as is it probably is herjob as home secretary , either her job home secretary, either her job or the job of the justice secretary. the process is that the icc 1515 00:08:35,
