figures show that almost 1 million under 25 are not in employment or studying the highest number of workless 16 to 24 year olds since 2014. well, the government says it plans to crack down on benefits to tackle this rise in worklessness. mental health problems are being blamed for this phenomenon, as increasing numbers of young adults say they are anxious and depressed. and there has also been a 56% rise in adhd diagnoses over the last 20 years. i'm joined now by my panel years. i'm joined now by my panel, businessman and former mep ben habib and journalist and academic tom buick. let's start with you, tom. there clearly is a problem here. many more young people not in work or training . people not in work or training. it seems to be the case that many are signed off sick, and many are signed off sick, and many claiming mental health reasons as the reason for that. do you think this is a real rise or a reported rise, or there's something else going on here? >> it's a massive problem. i've been writing about this for several years now. i mean, frankly, and this has happened under successive governments. we've taken our eye off the ball. i mean, in the 1980s, just
6:06 pm
a slight aside, when i grew up, you know, a third of under 25 year olds were unemployed. it's now a fifth, right? you know, a million. i mean, nothing very neat, by the way, of young people not in education, employment and training as it's described. but i'm afraid you know, we've dropped the ball on this over the last few years . this over the last few years. you know, the number of youth apprenticeships in this country have plummeted by 40%. so, you know, they're not going into productive employment. and as we've seen since the pandemic, we've seen since the pandemic, we've kind of, you know, i mean, in terms of the broken british labour market, we've been going overseas to bring in people to fill the vacancies and the skill shortages. meanwhile, clearly we've been parking people on the sick. and, you know, the figures today on adhd. and perhaps we'll get into the debate on this. i think there is a debate now about whether there's overdiagnosis going on of adhd , overdiagnosis going on of adhd, because some of the academic research indicates that there is renee. >> as tom said, there's not a lack of jobs. we keep importing
6:07 pm
people to do the jobs. it's just that our own young people are now not doing those jobs for whatever reason. clearly, employment is higher as a general rule than it was several decades ago. but why do you think these young men particularly are not currently working? >> yeah. so i think, you know, like many problems, it's multifaceted. i think the answer is multi sort of pronged. one of the one of the answers is i think that tony blair's flirtation with giving everyone tertiary education, sending them to university and not actually creating there an ability for them to get a job when they leave school or whatever. i think that's, you know, very firmly now proven to not have worked. we should have more apprenticeships, we should have more skills in the united kingdom, famously, we don't have any. we don't have builders of the same numbers. and specialists that we used to have, for example. it's a real problem for my industry, which is in property. so i think that whole university thing needs to be pared back. the pandemic and the lockdowns were disastrous, i think for people, their ability
6:08 pm
to well, first of all, the work ethic, which was damaged during the course of the pandemic. and that has implications not just for the youth, but it's had implications for the entire workforce. you know, 6 million people are surviving on universal credit . 2.5 million universal credit. 2.5 million people aren't even looking for job. >> but i think that's what we need to focus on. these are not unemployed young people. they're young people who aren't even looking to work absolutely benefits with no requirement. and we've got a graph, i think, to show the change in people signed off work on disability benefits over the last 20 years and the bottom line is the youngest section of the population. if you look on the left , we've got 2001 going all left, we've got 2001 going all the way up to 2021. it's a phenomenal leap in disability amongst young people. whereas other age groups have stayed 1511 00:08:42,624 -->
