saturday evening tipple. the scottish comedian fern brady has seen an advert for her new comedy tour, banned by the advertising authorities. now the poster depicts the comedian as the virgin mary squirting breast milk into the mouth of a kneeling priest, alongside the words i gave you milk to drink . words i gave you milk to drink. wow. now i've worked with fern brady and she is a very fine comedian and a lovely person. but it's interesting, isn't it? how modern comics feel incredibly comfortable mocking certain religions, but not others with the kind of graphic imagery on display here that is clearly offensive to millions of christians around the world. so why is it that the christians get it in the neck? well, that's because christianity is a soft touch. it's the one religion which you're allowed to mock. we saw that during the embarrassing opening ceremony of the paris olympics with a highly

sexualised re—imagining of the last supper , featuring themes of last supper, featuring themes of sadomasochism , whips, men sadomasochism, whips, men waggling their arses around sexual fetishes and the now obligatory drag queens. now i am a free speech absolutist and being offended does not give you the right to cancel the work of others, which is why i think it's actually a shame that this advert has been banned . now, advert has been banned. now, i don't like the advert, but it was not breaking the law, it was mocking a religion and that is something that you should always be able to do in a free society. that's why in my view, the word islamophobia is such a problem now. anti—muslim hatred is a disgrace. but the term islamophobia prevents the criticism of a religion, and that's not healthy in a society that's not healthy in a society that for good reason does not have blasphemy laws. although good luck telling that to the innocent batley school teacher that we don't have blasphemy
