time. but the alert was lifted about ten minutes before that moment . the labour mayor of moment. the labour mayor of london, sadiq khan , is to be london, sadiq khan, is to be knighted in the new year's honours list. according to the financial times. he is expected to receive his award for political and public service. after almost two decades in frontline politics. other political recipients reportedly also include labour's emily thornberry, who will be made a dame, and the former conservative mayor of birmingham, andy street, who will be knighted. the financial times reports the list is yet to receive final sign off, though, from the prime minister and king charles. french president emmanuel macron insists he will stay on until the end of his mandate in 2027, in a national address held a day after politicians toppled his government led by michel barnier. he resigned as prime minister after the government was ousted in a no confidence vote, the first since 1962. 331 mps backed the motion sparked by his use of presidential powers,

to push through a controversial ,60 billion budget without a vote. president emmanuel macron now faces the challenge of selecting a new prime minister from within a divided parliament, and time to get into the christmas spirit, because earlier this evening, the trafalgar square christmas tree lights were turned on. by . lights were turned on. by. festive cheer from the crowds there, despite the rain , during there, despite the rain, during a special ceremony where the royal marine corps of drums and regent's hall band of the salvation army performed. the tree is a gift from norway, something that has happened every year since 1947 to recognise the uk's assistance to norway during world war ii. well, those are the latest gb news headlines for now. i'm cameron walker. now it's back to patrick for the very latest gb news direct to your smartphone, sign up to news alerts by scanning the qr code , or go to

3:04 am
at their child and says, oh, he looks like a bodie, doesn't he? obviously, we're not actually allowed to know what mohammed looks like, and we certainly aren't allowed to draw our guesses on a piece of paper, so we'll leave that there. but the names are one thing, but there's a bigger story here. 1 in 3 babies are born to mothers who were born in a foreign country. indian mums came out on top. thenit indian mums came out on top. then it was pakistani mothers . then it was pakistani mothers. afghans are in the top ten. so are bangladeshis as well. look, i can't help but wonder whether or not we've given our passport away a little bit too easily. there is now an irreversible demographic and cultural change in britain. unfortunately, our political class decided that great britain is not really a country with its own culture. they saw it more as a plot of land that some people just happen to live on. i don't think it will be long before you walk outside your front door, really, and you'd be forgiven for wondering what country you were actually really in. let's get the thoughts of my panel this evening . we've got former tory evening. we've got former tory mp and first, we've also got the wonderful columnist and
3:05 am
broadcaster esther krakow and the former labour party adviser matthew laza. and a welcome along. great to have you on the show. this evening. and i'll start. i'll start with you then. i mean, for me, the bigger stat, i mean, for me, the bigger stat, i suppose, really is not not so much the name mohammed. it's more about the fact that 1 in 3 children, i think now are born to mothers who were born outside of the uk. are you are you concerned about the direction of travel here, do you think? >> well, i am concerned, but the stat, patrick, that i thought you were going to say, but you didn't . oh, is that actually our didn't. oh, is that actually our birth rate people? brits are not reproducing. that's what i was going to. birth rate is now down to 1.44. that's the lowest on record. we are not replacing ourselves. the replacement rate 2.1. we're miles away from that. thatis 2.1. we're miles away from that. that is the absolute elephant in the room here. we have an ageing population. that's the massive demographic change we've got. we've got a diminishing working population and we are not reproducing ourselves. we have got to have this is the elephant in the room and no government really wants to tackle it. we
3:06 am
have got to have more family friendly policies to encourage people to actually have kids. >> i mean, over the last five years, 90% of population increase has been due to immigration. so we're not actually increasing naturally. which should would would be the preferable option . i mean, i preferable option. i mean, i think the whole sort of yes, mohammed is the most popular male name, but i think it's more of what it says about the culture. so it's some cultures are having more children than others. so 62% of births last i think over the last two years were to white, ethnically white british people, but they make up over 80% of the population. so clearly there is a disconnect there. some some communities are having more children. i mean, you talked you talked about 1 in 3 children being born to mothers that were not born in britain. well, most of those mothers are actually romanian. the demographic with the highest, the highest number romanians. exactly. and the issue is the birth rate. why are brits having so few children? why is it so expensive? again, immigration features in this. no one knows what. i can't live anywhere because we can't afford housing, which is one of the big issues that young people are not.
3:07 am
>> and come 2035, the population is going to start declining. so how are we going to pay for our old people? it's true that 1 in 3 foreign mothers are are having children at the moment. but over time, what we see with these demographics is they might have more children when they first arrive, but then their children come back to the norm. >> it is it is just there are just cultural differences when it comes to the average number of children that you tend to have, right? i mean, i was looking at this the other day, actually, and in somalia the average number of children is something like eight. yeah , something like eight. yeah, that's just in chad it's like it's like seven or i mean, there is also a conversation about certain groups of like certain communities having too many kids, which is it's interesting because we can draw parallels with france. >> so. so macron was talking about, you know, immigrants from mainly french west africa or former french west africa that had like six kids. and because there's so much state support, they can have those six kids, but they're not having the best quality of life. and you can see similar parallels here in the uk. actually, there shouldn't be having more kids because at the moment he's he's not said word. >> yes. oh don't worry. nice to
3:08 am
have you. it's always good to be with you . are you are you when with you. are you are you when you see things like okay muhammad is now the 1500 00
