is that the answer to the problems that we're facing? and today, extra funding announced for hospices. but many people are saying that the government is giving on one hand and taking when it comes to the other. i speak, of course, of the national insurance rises, but i want to ask you as well, do we do enough for hospices? they have to rely so much on charity. is that right? and a suggestion made today by one mp is that all other mps should have to do compulsory work experience within the field that they are allocated. what do you think to that? so many inexperienced mps is the argument. so is that the

solution or not? and speaking of politics, should we have tougher laws when it comes to election donations? interesting that they want to tweak those laws now isn't it? you tell me your thoughts on that. and also i want to ask you sharia courts. why have we become the western capital? your thoughts? there's lots that we need to discuss tonight. and look who's keeping me company to do so. i've got kelvin mackenzie and james schneider. lots for us to get stuck into. but before we do, let's cross live for the 6:00 news headlines. >> good afternoon. it's 6:01. i'm joe casper in the newsroom. sir keir starmer has insisted he would not have done anything differently if he were to start his tenure as prime minister again. he has been facing questions from senior mps and government departments at the liaison committee this afternoon. the questioning focused on the state of the uk

economy, potential trade deals for the country, housebuilding targets and the need for a ceasefire in gaza. at the end, prime minister, the prime minister was asked if he could if he would do anything differently following criticism for decisions including denying waspi women compensation, imposing new inheritance tax measures on farmers and the cuts to winter fuel payments. >> no, we had to do tough stuff. we're getting on with it and i'm very pleased to be delivering and delivering from a position of power rather than going around the division lobbies, losing every night. i've had too much of that. >> and winter bills in england and wales are to rise by an average of 36% over the next five years. water regulator ofwat announced today that's the equivalent of an extra £31 a yeah equivalent of an extra £31 a year. the regulator said the increase would pay for £104 billion upgrade of the water sector to deliver substantial, lasting improvements for customers and the environment. ofwat is already facing backlash, with liberal democrat

environment spokesman tim farron describing the regulator as toothless and defunct. it comes as around 58,000 homes in hampshire are without water due to a technical issue. southern water is saying the response to the incident is being coordinated by the government. four teenage boys have been jailed for life for the murders of two best friends who were stabbed to death in a case of mistaken identity. mason rist, 15, and max dixon, 16, died from stab wounds after being chased by the four armed teenagers in knowle west area of bristol at about 11 pm. on the 27th of january this year. their attackers riley toliver, 18, cody westcott, 17, and two boys aged 15 and 16, who cannot be named due to their age, had been dnven named due to their age, had been driven by anthony snook. all five were convicted of two counts of murder last month following a six week trial at bristol crown court. snook was later jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum of 38

years. mason rist's uncle, david knight, spoke outside of court. >> no family should ever have to go through what our two families have gone through. these juveniles have not only destroyed our families, but to an extent, their own lives and that of their own families. and we hope that as they grow older and mature, hopefully in prison, they do fully come to realise they do fully come to realise the extent of what they have done. on the evening of saturday, the 27th of january, and they have to live with that for the rest of their lives. >> as the latest gb news headunes >> as the latest gb news headlines for now, i'm joe caspen >> now back to dewbs& co for the very latest gb news direct to your smartphone, sign up to news alerts by scanning the qr code or go to gbnews.com/alerts.

>> thank you very much for that, joanne michelle dewberry and i'm keeping you company here on dewbs& co until 7:00 tonight. that last story there on the bulletins. absolutely horrific. can you imagine the horror those innocent boys doing absolutely nothing and then slaughtered in that way? it makes you wonder, doesn't it? what on earth is this world coming to? i cannot imagine what those families must be going through. absolutely devastating. i'm with you until 7:00 tonight. and alongside me, i've got my panel. kelvin mackenzie, the former editor of the sun, and james schneider, the former adviser to jeremy corbyn. good evening, gents, to both of you. you're very welcome tonight, as are each and every single one of you at home. what is on your mind this evening? are you feeling festive, everybody? are you in that mindset yet or not? i am very festive tonight. very very festive. it took me all my time to get my santa hat off my head,
6:06 pm
so it did. i didn't think it was a great thing to do my entire show with it on my head, but i really wanted to. lots. we need to discuss tonight. you can get in touch with me all the usual ways. email me gb views gb news. com go to the website gbnews.com/yoursay. or of course you can tweet or x me before i get stuck into the topics here in this country. i do just want to reflect on another story that you had on the bulletins there. just i want to show my respect really to this is really tricky for me with the whole accent. gisele pelicot that lady in france, we all know the story. it is one of the most horrific stories that we've ever heard. her being drugged and raped by her husband and multiple multiple other men. she is a hero in my eyes. her husband , hero in my eyes. her husband, sentenced to 20 years in jail, 50 other men as well involved in this. and that's just the ones that they know of. there were many others that got away with this currently scot free because
6:07 pm
they couldn't identify them. anyway. to me, she's a hero because she stood up and her message is a simple one. she wants to swap the shame. she didn't proceed with anonymity. all of the details, the awful, horrendous details they've there for us all to read and know about. and her message. as i said, a simple one the shame shouldn't be on her. the victim. it should be on the men, the perpetrators. she's really a tower of strength and an inspiration to anyone that has experienced anything similar. i've got no doubt that she will have inspired victims to actually stand up, tackle things head on and say, no, no, we're not going to accept this violence against women. as for the men that did this, may they rot in their jail cells. quite frankly, that's all i've got to say to them. but look, top story here. water bills yet again they are going to be increasing. when is this ever going to end, ladies and gents, do you think we'll ever see a time where we've just bills will actually start going on the decline? 36%.
6:08 pm
they're estimated to rise over the next five years. it means that our customers will be paying that our customers will be paying more and more money. the first year estimated about 80 odd quid. it might be starting to go down after that. we shall see. what do you think's going on? do you think we get value for money with our water? >> kelvin included in all these bills is we're having nine new reservoirs, and we're also having nine kind of transference, i presume, from scotland and the like, down to the south, where it's wetter and wetter in the north and drier in the south. so a lot of this money is going on infrastructure. it's not going into anybody's pockets now. so basically water bills have really, in real terms, not really, in real terms, not really gone up at all over the last 10 or 15 years. and suddenly we get what we've got now, which is actually a system where sewage appears to be the norm in some kind of rivers. how this happened, i don't know. i'm not the expert, but the idea that wild swimmers are now the
