news centre. an appalling scenes out of germany tonight after a vehicle rammed into a christmas market in the north eastern city of magdeburg. well, these are the latest images we're receiving now from magdeburg, which is still at the centre, as you can see, of a massive emergency services response. we're told that among those killed is a young child. according to german authorities, up to 70 other people have been injured. 15 of those are reported to have been critically injured. almost 40 are moderately wounded and around 15 others are more lightly injured. well, dozens of ambulances massed at the scene, with paramedics triaging the injured before taking them to nearby major trauma centres. eyewitnesses were telling local

newspaper reporters that the scene inside that christmas market resembled a war zone. the bodies were left strewn all over the ground within the market, shattered stalls around them as the emergency services worked to try to save the lives of the most critically injured. well, images are circulating which show a car being driven at high speed right into the christmas market. now those images are too graphic to air, but they show multiple people being struck and thrown up into the air and to the side of that vehicle. and the side of that vehicle. and the vehicle, it seems, did not slow down in any way. the images that we've seen show that vehicle continuing at high speed all of the way through that christmas market. well, german authorities have confirmed that authorities have confirmed that a 50 year old man originally from saudi arabia was arrested at the scene. he's reported to

be a doctor who works at one of the area hospitals in that part of north—east germany. he has apparently lived in germany since 2006. early reports indicate the saudi doctor was not known to the police. however, that picture could of course, change as more details become available. the german chancellor, olaf scholz, said he was very concerned at the news coming out of magdeburg and his thoughts are with those caught up in this tragedy. the german police and governmental authorities have not yet declared the incident a terrorist attack, but it will be uppermost, of course, in the minds of the investigators going forward. germany has suffered multiple terrorist attacks in recent years. in 2016. 12 people were killed and 56 injured when a tunisian asylum seeker a lorry

and drove that into a christmas market in berlin. that attack was carried out in support of the terror group isis in syria. and police and the security services here in the uk and elsewhere across europe have been warning in recent months of a resurgence of both isis and al—qaeda, a threat that authorities had thought had dissipated over recent years. now, gaining strength and capitalising on the turmoil in countries like syria, of course, where bashar al assad was overthrown in recent weeks. well, we should reiterate again, the german authorities have not yet given any indication of a motivation behind the terrible events of this evening that has. but it has all the hallmarks of a vehicle borne terrorist attack. crowded places, especially during the festive period, are seen as particularly

high risk in terms of the terror threat. germany has a proud tradition of christmas markets, always packed with families, but tonight they are mourning a terrible atrocity in one of their main cities. stay tuned to gb news and to breakfast for more on this unfolding situation. >> for the very latest gb news direct to your smartphone, sign up to news alerts by scanning the qr code or go to gbnews.com/alerts. >> hello and welcome to headliners. this is tomorrow's stories with three comedians. before we dive in, let's have a quick look at what kerry and scott will have to work with on saturday's front pages. the express leads with king positive about return to full duties. the ai has uk's worst rail firms

cancelling 800 trains a day ahead of travel, getaway, turmoil and storms. the mail has carnage at christmas market and the telegraph leads with the nf pioneer. secret sperm donors and families torn apart. the times has boom in weight loss jabs and finally, the daily star. well, this is awkward. okay, so, kerry, let's start with the daily mail. >> we'll get to the lighter stuff. >> yeah , we will get through >> yeah, we will get through this first. >> this is not funny stuff. not really. no. it's awful. it's if anyone has been watching just the last few seconds will have seen as much as we really know about it. and we don't know, apparently, a saudi doctor, we don't know whether it was terrorism or not at the moment. it's got the hallmarks. it's can we say it's terrorism ish.7 terrorism adjacent? well, we say it's terrorism ish? terrorism adjacent? well, we're saying it's got the hallmarks of what we don't know. >> so carnage at christmas market horror as car ploughs into german crowd in deliberate attack, killing 11 people and injuring up to 80. >> and unfortunately, with the daily mail, they've got their bumper christmas tv magazine advertised, which doesn't look good with the rest of the story. but and this came as we were going to be discussing a story

which was in the mail about which was in the mail about which was in today of panic causes 10,000 strong marched chanting allahu akbar, went through a christmas market which already caused worries. and there was arguments about whether that was something innocuous or whether it was really ominous. and with, of course, previous attack, a previous attack on christmas market in berlin in 2016, everything's looking a bit dodgy. >> so there's no relationship between those stories. but the point is the christmas market, except what was a story earlier on as just obviously been, i wouldn't say escalated, but has been affected by this story and how people feel about it. >> and this is at a time as germany's going towards elections. and, you know, this march of 10,000 strong people shouting allahu akbar, which is not your normal christmas message, by the way. >> well, no, but i don't i don't think we know the motives of this person yet in germany. have you seen the footage, scott? >> i have, i've seen him being arrested. he was he was calm dunng arrested. he was he was calm during his own arrest. he lay down on the ground and allowed himself to be handcuffed and

taken away. he. i watched the footage for a second of bodies flying through the air. that was as much as i could stand. i feel like, you know, i'm not sure what germany is doing about anything like this. the report was saying earlier that many european countries thought that these threats from isis , or these threats from isis, or extreme fundamentalist groups had died down. i don't know why governments think that if you follow any of this in the media, there's been no dying down in any way. isis, you can see what's happening in in the middle east right now. i mean, these groups are quite strong in some places, and they receive funding from major governments in that area. i mean, of course, you said it's true. we don't know the objective of this person, but i really do feel like i'm not sure that the safety of citizens is the utmost importance to these governments.
11:09 pm
it just doesn't seem that i'm also not sure what it is. >> i mean, obviously we don't know his motive at the moment, but even with the ten 000 strong march, we don't know what what do they actually want right now? i mean, what's the whole the middle east is extremely complicated. everyone's fighting everyone. and there's huge gangs and clans and so on involved. and turkey, russia and iran and so on. everyone's using proxies. israel, of course, is over in syria. i don't know what anyone's actually marching for or demanding anymore. >> yeah, well, i'm sure we'll hear more about magdeburg. well, from breakfast onwards tomorrow, let's move along and have a look at the times, please, scott. >> oh, talk about grim. the royal family are there. they've had a tumultuous year. it just seems one year after another isn't great. and they all look sad. and they have sad faces and their sad face photos. and harry looks like he's concerned, although he's not really part of the family anymore. not really. harry. >> well, they've made him very small though, haven't they?
