>> ben nana. thank you very much. the top stories the government is rejecting calls for a national inquiry into grooming gangs. it comes after kemi badenoch called for a national inquiry into the uk's rape gang scandal, saying justice for victims is long overdue. her plea came after labour's safeguarding minister insisted it was for oldham council alone to decide whether to launch an investigation into alleged exploitation. between 2011 and 2014. what? elon musk attacked that decision, claiming jess phillips deserves prison and accused the prime minister of inaction as director of pubuc of inaction as director of public prosecutions. however, labour says it is working to implement recommendations from the 2022 independent inquiry into child sexual abuse, pledging to strengthen the law to protect victims. health minister andrew gwynne told gb news this morning there have been enough inquiries already. >> we already have a series of recommendations and actually it's incumbent on this

government as it was incumbent on the previous government to implement those recommendations and to ensure that justice is done.i and to ensure that justice is done. i don't think that justice is done by having another inquiry into all the same issues that we've already had. we need to build into our criminal justice system and our legal system going forwards, robust mechanisms that make sure that these kind of things can never happen again. i want to see action, not words. >> in other news, the government has launched an independent commission to transform social care, but proposals for major reform may not be delivered for years. health and social care secretary wes streeting is promising to finally grasp the nettle on social care reform, with an independent commission due to begin work in april. but the commission, chaired by baroness louise casey, is not due to publish its final report until 2028. social care means help for older or disabled

people with day to day tasks like washing, dressing, medication and eating well. this announcement comes as the labour government is starting 2025, with its lowest approval ratings to date. yesterday, 20 councillors in nottingham defected from the party, warning that the prime minister is on a collision course with disaster. and temperatures are expected to fall as low as —eight degrees celsius overnight. as a week long spell of wintry conditions hits the uk. the country has been hit by a blast of cold weather, with temperatures falling as low as minus five overnight. the uk health security agency has issued cold weather health alerts for all of england and wales. amber alerts have been issued already until the 8th of january, meaning a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions, is likely. the met office also forecast cold weather in parts of wales and rural spots in
