government is promising a shake up of social care, but it could be years before any big changes take place. >> wes streeting health secretary again has said that that independent commission, starting in april, will grasp the nettle on reform, but its final report won't arrive until 2028. >> the review, chaired by baroness louise casey, aims to improve support for older and disabled people with everyday tasks like washing, eating and medication. >> however, the lib dem leader, sir ed davey, says the process needs to move much faster. >> yes, because liberal democrats have led the call for a cross—party commission. but given the crisis in social care and the impact that has on the nhs, we do need to move much faster. so the liberal democrats will be calling on for many more immediate measures to tackle the chronic shortage of staff in our care system and for the pace of this commission to be accelerated significantly. we have to tackle this. the conservatives left the left, the care system, the nhs in a total mess. so we know the crisis is

deep, but we've had many reports before. >> in other news, a seven month old baby has died after a car lost control on a dual carriageway in lincolnshire and then hit a tree, with police investigating whether the crash was linked to icy conditions. >> that comes as an amber weather alert warning for snow and freezing rain will bring hazardous travel conditions across much of england and wales that has been issued by the met office today. temperatures are expected to fall as low as minus eight degrees overnight, and the country has been hit by a blast of cold weather, with temperatures already falling as low as —five degrees celsius last night. >> amber alerts are in place until the 8th of january. the number of patients in hospital with flu has quadrupled in the last month, according to new data from the nhs in england. there were just over 5000 patients with flu in hospital on the 29th of december, up from just over 1100 at the end of november. the figures also showed there were 4102 patients

demanded that the government launches an immediate inquiry into child exploitation in britain. despite not doing that for 14 years in power. and this comes as sir keir starmer has attacked over his handling of the oldham grooming gang scandal, when he was head of the crown prosecution service. with labour blocking an inquiry into his conduct at the time, well, it's now emerged that conservatives also rejected a national inquiry into grooming gangs back in 2022, when they were in government. let's get more on this now with our national reporter, charlie peters. the reporter, really, who's got this story rolling around the world again, charlie. it just has absolutely kicked off. yesterday was busy. today makes that pale in comparison. elon musk getting involved, calling this the worst mass crime against the british people even crime against the british people ever. calling for people to be put in jail in british politics, this will not go away. and by jove, charlie, you've caused one hell of a ferrari. >> yeah, it's not every day you

break a news line. and the richest man in the world shares it. but that's exactly what's happened. and it has gone around like wildfire, as you say, martin. and this latest development in the last couple of hours from wes streeting, the health secretary, he's saying that elon musk's comments have been misjudged and misinformed. he didn't specify which comments, but i imagine it's his stark criticism of jess phillips, the safeguarding minister, after we revealed that she had rejected after a almost four month delay, a request from oldham council for a government led inquiry. but wes streeting has said today that he is going to be working with the government to implement the recommendations of the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse, and that's in response, of course, to kemi badenoch coming out on the back of our exclusives story, saying that we need not just a review 1515 00:08
