>> michelle. thank you. the top stories. professor alexis jay, who chaired the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse, has said today that people should just get on with implementing the recommendations made in previous inquiries. professor jay's comments come as the prime minister dismissed calls for a national inquiry yesterday, accusing the conservatives of jumping on a bandwagon. the home secretary told the commons yesterday that the government will make it an offence with professional and criminal sanctions to fail to report or cover up the abuse. shadow justice secretary robert jenrick called once again for a national inquiry. >> i have long advocated whole life sentences for these grooming gang perpetrators and i've said that if they're foreign national offenders, get them out of our country, deport them. no ifs, no buts. so they never step foot on this soil of our country again. and the cowardly public officials who did turn a blind eye, they should be prosecuted as well. not a single one has been

prosecuted so far. and that is completely wrong. we need to take action, and we need now to have a full national public inquiry. >> a home office spokesman issued the following statement. we are working at pace across government to drive forward real action to implement the recommendations of the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse. in other news, the danger to life flood warnings in place as dozens of people have been rescued by firefighters and more rain, sleet and snow are on the way. two people had to be rescued from floodwater by firefighters on leicester road in leicester yesterday, and a man's body was also recovered from an area of flooding in nonh from an area of flooding in north yorkshire. the environment agency has 190 flood warnings and 292 flood alerts in place. the met office has issued new snow and ice warnings for scotland and northern ireland in place until midday tomorrow. meanwhile, people are being urged to keep their guard up ahead of a status orange low temperature warning issued for most counties tonight and

tomorrow night. the metropolitan police says a 14 year old boy has been stabbed to death on a bus in woolwich, in south—east london. they say an investigation has been launched after the incident this afternoon. that incident occurred on a route 472 bus on woolwich church road, near the junction with the a205 south circular road. a police statement says paramedics treated him, but the boy died shortly after medics arrived on the scene. no arrests have been made so far but police are appealing for witnesses. we are yet to hear from a police press conference shortly. a number of nhs trusts in england have declared critical incidents. this comes after the number of people in england's hospitals with flu quadrupled in the last month. the royal liverpool university hospital declared a critical incident this afternoon due to exceptionally high demand on emergency care. it's understood the longest time that one patient waited to be admitted to a ward at that

hospital was 50 hours. several other nhs trusts later declared critical incidents, with one saying it has seen high number of older patients with respiratory problems exacerbated by the cold weather. elsewhere, us president elect donald trump has announced $20 billion in investment across america into data centres. donald trump called it an exciting time for the us. he told reporters in florida this afternoon that dubai based investor firm damac properties has agreed to invest that $20 billion into the us. donald trump went on to say that the us is inheriting a difficult situation from the outgoing administration. mr trump says he was disappointed to see the biden administration's attempt to block the reforms of the american people and what they voted for. today is the 10th anniversary of the charlie hebdo attack in paris, where 12 people were killed and 11 injured in its newsroom. the french satirical magazine has marked

many of you lot will be telling me, michelle, we used to go to school when it was knee high snow and it never affected us. i can hear you shouting that at me as we speak. but in all seriousness, we've got an epidemic, haven't we? of mental health when it comes to young children. so do you think we need to focus more on making them more resilient? if so, do tell me how, because it's almost coming from the top down, isn't it? if it's bad weather and we've got the bosses telling them you don't have to come to school today, it's trickling down to them, isn't it? get your thoughts in on all of that and more. but i start the programme with some very, very sad news. we've just been talking about children. i don't know if you've got children, ladies and gents, or if you've got grandchildren or if you've got grandchildren or what, but today many of you will have said farewell to your child as they've gone off to school. you'll be sat with them, perhaps now eating your tea, your dinner as you watch this programme. but unfortunately for one family, another young family, a 14 year old boy has family, a 14
