the uk. this is britain's across the uk. this is britain's newsroom with me, ben, leo and miriam cates. >> well we'll be asking has justice been served to the southport killer? >> axel rudakubana sentence him to custody for life with a minimum term which he must serve in custody of 52 years, less the time he has served already. >> 52 years behind bars for the horrific murders of the three little girls in southport, chief crown prosecutor sarah hammond gave her reaction to the case. >> many of the cases that we deal with have tragedy, difficulties and trauma, but this is one of the most harrowing that i is. the chief crown prosecutor for this area have ever come across. >> well, reform uk mps rupert lowe and lee anderson have called for the return of the death penalty, so we'll be asking if it's time to bring it back for cases like the southport murders. or would this be a step backwards for our society. elsewhere, storm eoin batters britain as a danger to

life. warning is issued by the met office. >> with new records of wind speeds of 114 miles an hour, 93,000 homes without power. storm arwen has doing its worst and continues as it heads towards scotland. >> and a shock new report finds that children are 50 times more likely to suffer from so—called gender distress than a decade ago. more on that to come. >> and the mazda mx five rf convertible has been named as britain's most loved car in an official survey. do you agree with that? what's your pick? and talking of great brits. >> we shall fight in the fields and in the streets. we shall fight in the hills. we shall never surrender. never surrender. >> never surrender. >> it's 60 years today since sir winston churchill died. and will we ever see a leader like him in
9:32 am
britain again? how would he fare in the current political landscape? >> thank you for your company this morning, miriam. nice to be back with you. yes. long time. apparently you have a mazda mx five. >> i do have an mx five, but it's not one of those swanky new ones. it's a mark one. it was made in 1991, so it's pretty old now. it's actually not on the road. i hope to be able to show a picture later. i've just asked my husband to send one through, but it was our only car for quite a long time and the boot is tiny. you can basically fit two shopping bags in. that's it. i've travelled all around europe in it. >> so i think german cars and japanese cars like mazda's, they're meant to be the most reliable, aren't they? what was your first car? >> well, that was. probably the first car that i kind of co—owned. i had a very old battered renault clio that cost me £600 when i was a trainee
9:33 am
teacher. >> that was quite useful. mine was a honda civic. >> oh. >> oh. >> very nice. back in the day. yeah. another japanese car. so, yeah. let us know what you think about cars. the mazda mx five. is it britain's most beloved? what about the jaguar's british. british made? >> yes. that's true. although it said i think the least favourite car is a particular type of range rover that costs lots of money. anyway, we're going to be discussing that later. >> a range rover. >> a range rover. >> evoke one of those squashed ones. >> yeah. there we go. well, that's what happens when you export your production to tata in india. big show coming up, including the debate over the death penalty and the horrors from southport and all the court action yesterday. let us know your views. gbnews.com/yoursay. but first, here's your news headunes but first, here's your news headlines with tatiana sanchez. >> ben myriam, thank you. the top stories, schools, rail services and hospitals are all set to be affected today when storm erwin slams the uk. forecasters have flagged a rare

threat to life. red weather warning over 4 million people across northern ireland and scotland have received emergency alerts from the met office, with guidance on how to stay safe. a wind speed of 114mph brought by the storm has been recorded in ireland, the fastest since records began, according to the forecaster. local authorities have warned commuters to avoid travel at all costs. train operator scotrail has suspended all services across scotland today, saying it wouldn't be safe to operate . the southport safe to operate. the southport child killer will likely die behind bars after murdering three little girls at a dance class, but his 52 year sentence has sparked calls for law changes. axel rudakubana received one of the highest minimum custody terms on record for the attack at that dance class in southport in july last yean class in southport in july last year, when he was 17 years old. alice da silva aguiar, bebe king and elsie dot stancombe were all killed, and harrowing details of the attack were heard at
9:35 am
liverpool crown court yesterday. however, southport's labour mp patrick hurley said the sentence was not severe enough and he asked the attorney general to review it as unduly lenient due to his age at the time of the attack, rudakubana cannot legally receive a whole life order, a punishment reserved for offenders aged 21 or over or, in rare cases, those aged 18 to 20. defence secretary john healey told gb news rudakubana did not get a whole life sentence because international law prevented it. >> the technicality of the whole life sentences. i think it's important to know that the last government did reduce it to 18, in line with international law. after the manchester arena bombings, and that still stands. there are a range of other aspects of law of agencies who have failed in this case to step in. they knew about this man's extreme violence, but they failed to take any steps that might have prevented it. and there may be changes also in the programmes that are designed to
9:36 am
deal with this sort of extremism. that's what the inquiry now the court case has finished, which was launched this week, will do. >> and a woman whose four young boys died in a fire after she left them home alone to go to sainsbury's, will be sentenced later. david carrick had left her two sets of twins in the locked terrace house when the fatal blaze broke out in the evening in december 2021. the 30 year old, who suffered from mental health problems, was found guilty of four counts of manslaughter following a trial. rose and the children had been living in squalor before the tragedy. and those are the latest gb news headlines for now i'm tatiana sanchez. more from me in half an hour. >> for the very latest gb news direct to your smartphone, sign up to news alerts by scanning the qr code or go to gbnews.com/alerts.

>> hello and welcome! this is britain's newsroom live across the united kingdom on gb news with ben leo ross and miriam cates. >> good morning to you. thank you for your company this morning. there's only one place to start today. the southport killer axel rudakubana has been jailed for life with a minimum term in prison of 52 years. >> well, we'll be giving our thoughts on that in just a moment. but first, our home and security editor, mark white, has this report. >> yeah, it's down there. down there? yes. it's down there. >> in the back of a local taxi. this is southport killer axel rudakubana. just moments before he shattered the innocence of a children's dance class in the most horrific way imaginable. there would be no payment for the driver from this violence obsessed teenager. as he suddenly jumps out of the taxi, making his way towards the entrance of the heart space venue. venue. >> venue. >> as we go, i go. >> it's so incredibly
9:38 am
heartbreaking to watch these images. as in, the background music can clearly be heard from the taylor swift themed dance class inside, as the youngsters here had no idea of the evil about to enter their. world. >> we see. >> we see. >> three of those innocents were murdered, eight others and two adults injured in a sustained stabbing attack that left even the most experienced first responders completely traumatised. >> the events that took place on the 29th of july last year were just truly horrific. i don't think there's any other way to describe it. you know, whilst we've heard the sentencing this week of axel rudakubana, which is positive, you know, my thoughts remain with the families of el—sisi, bebe and alice, the other girls and adults that were injured and those that have been traumatised. but by what they saw on that day. just truly
9:39 am
horrific. >> this is the same model as the chef's knife rudakubana bought on amazon and used in the attack. although he refused to speak to investigators, he was overheard on an audio recording muttering to himself in police custody, saying he was glad the young girls were dead and satisfied he'd achieved what he set out to do. multiple satisfied he'd achieved what he set
