6:04 am
speak later. paul. thank you very much indeed. let's get into the news. and the prime minister and president trump have agreed to meet soon, following a phone call between the two of them last night. >> while they discussed the importance of close and warm ties between the uk and the us. >> but all eyes are on trump's trade war with colombia as he threatened a 25% tariff after they refused to accept returning illegal immigrants. >> while colombia quickly capitulated, with their foreign ministry stating the country had overcome the impasse, with the us not only agreeing to accept the migrants, but sending a presidential plane to collect them. >> let's get more commentary on this. political commentator theo usherwood with his view on this. you see, i looked at this and i thought to myself, talk tough. this trump form of negotiation seems to be getting the job done. could other countries learn from this? >> it works, doesn't it? and of course, you've got the front pages of the telegraph and the times going on on this, you know, on the line of this warm and personal phone call between donald trump and keir starmer.
6:05 am
but they didn't get into the nitty gritty of the key issues between britain and the us. we don't have a decision yet, a formal decision yet on whether lord mandelson, peter mandelson is going to be the uk ambassador to washington. that's still in donald trump's in—tray. is he going to approve it? the chagos island deals. two weeks ago, the foreign office were trying to get it over the line. then, of course, we knew that donald trump and marco rubio, the incoming secretary of state, were going to look very dimly on it because, of course, it would give a key influence to china and a very strategic, just very close to a strategic military base at diego garcia for the united states. no decision on that.in united states. no decision on that. in fact, the uk has now handedit that. in fact, the uk has now handed it over to donald trump to have the final say on the deal to have the final say on the deal. and then the key issue, another key issue is defence spending. of course, donald trump would like us, all countries, nato countries to be pulling their weight when it comes to spending on defence. he's sick and tired of the united states funding nato, supporting nato, especially with the war in ukraine. and that's got to come to a resolution.
6:06 am
he'd like to see 5% of gdp in each country spent on defence. and keir starmer hasn't even set out a timetable as to when he plans to hit 2.5%. the tories said they'd do it by 2030. >> are leading with this today. they're saying starmer no go over the cash for defence because basically he's saying the country's broke. so. >> the treasury, the treasury are putting their fingers in their ears and saying, la la la la la. we're not going to listen to this because of course it would cost something like £75 billion for that uplift of to 2.3 to 2.5% of gdp by 2030. it's not one of the country's priorities. and you point to the polls going back to the general election, people don't see defence spending as a key issue. they see it as nhs education, deaung they see it as nhs education, dealing with immigration. but, you know, you're reporting on what happened with donald trump and colombia. he sent over two planes of illegal criminals who'd been found in the united states back to colombia. the colombians said, no, we're not going to let let those planes land. donald trump turns around and goes, right. those tariffs 25%, they're now 50%. two hours.
6:07 am
the colombian president has turned around and said, don't worry, i'll send my own plane. we'll take them, we'll take them. we'll take those nationals back to colombia. he's not messing around donald trump. and i think the concern has got to be within government. he could take a similar approach to negotiations with this country. if we're saying no, we're going to hang around on 2.3% of gdp. on defence, donald trump could say, well, what does that do for why should i continue to support ukraine if vladimir putin isn't going to come to the table and do a deal? these are really serious questions that not only keir starmer but other european nafions keir starmer but other european nations are facing as well, because trump isn't messing about this time around. >> yeah, and about
