begin today's show by marking holocaust memorial day, and commemorations are being held, as you can see, live at the site of auschwitz—birkenau to mark the 80th anniversary of the nazi death camps. liberation. in total, 17 million people died dunng total, 17 million people died during the holocaust, including 6 million jews, 4.5 million soviet citizens, 3.3 million soviet citizens, 3.3 million soviet prisoners of war and 1.8 million poles, and including at auschwitz itself. 1.3 million jews were sent there, 1.1 million were murdered or died of malnutrition and other ailments. one of the greatest, biggest stains on all of human history. and today we remember that. so it will never be repeated. and we can now speak with gb news as royal correspondent cameron walker, who is in the area.

cameron, we're just going to listen in for a while, actually, and then we'll join with cameron. and as we're waiting for the speeches to commence, we are expecting king charles is there. the first attending monarch in history in british history. survivors. we can see there now of the holocaust of auschwitz making their way to the front. this will most likely be the last of the great anniversaries where there will be survivors due to their age. of course, 80 years on, these would have been some of the youngest prisoners of war in auschwitz. we're expecting around about 5 pm. the king will be laying a wreath at the death wall. so—called, of

course, because that's where the prisoners of war were sent to cure before they went to meet their ghastly fate in those gas chambers. and we can now cross to our royal correspondent, cameron walker, who is live at this event. cameron hugely, hugely moving scenes here of very old, very, very old and survivors walking their way towards the front. you can hear a pin drop in there and of course the king is in attendance. cameron walker, tell us more. us more. >> us more. >> yes, martin. incredibly moving, incredibly poignant. there's around 50 survivors. we think, inside this special tent that has been built over the gates of death here at auschwitz—birkenau. and that gate at the bottom of it contains an archway which is just big enough to fit a freight train car through. and in each of those freight train cars were packed. thousands and thousands

of victims. these are just hearing, i believe, one of those survivors delivering a speech at auschwitz. as soon as we do have a translation, we'll bring that to you. but what i can tell you is today, although there are several world leaders in attendance, including king charles, as well as the polish president, president duda and emmanuel macron of france and other european royalty, it is only the survivors who will be delivering speeches. it's the world leaders who will be listening to their testimony, listening to their testimony, listening to their memories of this horrific place , and why it this horrific place, and why it is so important to remember what happened here to ensure it never happens again, particularly with the rise of anti—semitism. and his majesty. during this ceremony, alongside a the other
